12 best algaecide for swimming pools
Algaecide for swimming pools is a chemical product designed to control and prevent the growth of algae in pool water. Algae can thrive in pool environments, particularly in the presence of warm temperatures, sunlight, and organic matter. Algaecides work by disrupting the growth and reproduction of algae, helping to maintain clear and clean pool water.
Key points about algaecides for swimming pools include:
Prevention and Control: Algaecides are often used as a preventative measure to inhibit the growth of algae. They can also be used to control existing algae blooms.
Types of Algaecides: There are different types of algaecides available, including copper-based and quaternary ammonium compounds. The choice of algaecide may depend on the type of algae present and the specific needs of the pool.
Application: Algaecides are typically added directly to the pool water according to the manufacturer's instructions. The application may vary based on the product, so it's essential to follow guidelines carefully.
Compatibility: It's important to ensure that the chosen algaecide is compatible with other pool chemicals. Mixing incompatible chemicals can result in adverse reactions.
Regular Maintenance: Alongside algaecide use, regular pool maintenance such as proper filtration, water circulation, and balancing chemical levels is crucial for preventing algae growth.
Storage: Algaecides, like other pool chemicals, should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
It's advisable to consult with pool experts or refer to the specific product's instructions for detailed information on the application, dosage, and compatibility with your pool system. Additionally, following general pool maintenance guidelines helps ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming environment.

Answer: | Ours is all well water, and it worked well for us. |
Question: | What can i use to clear out dead algae |
Answer: | It depends if your filter is clean, but I will assume you backwash at least once a week for a couple minutes and rinse for about 30 seconds. Do the following: 1. put in the recommended dosage of algecide on the bottle. There is two recommendations on all algecide bottles for a preventive or maintenance dose, if you see it, it is maintenance requiring a higher dosage. Fill up your pool with tap water till it is above the top of the skimmer. Leave the pool filter overnight for 24 hours, next day. Turn off your pool pump, put it in Waste position, turn on the pump, remove your skimmer basket, and hook up your pool cleaning hose to the skimmer pipe attached to your pole and scrub vacuum. I am in the above ground pool doing all this maintenance the dead algae and other debris is being sucked out and the bigger stuff is collected in your pool pump basket. The dead algae and smaller particles do not go in the sand tank, they are be flushed out in your yard or wherever your out valve is directed (I have a spray cannon so it waters my lawn at the same time and kills the grass where it lands from the chlorine (LOL). You need to move very slowly a small step at a time so not to stir up the bottom until you finish the entire pool. Secure the power and put the pump in the closed position, remove the pump filter basket and clean it out the basket with a garden hose till it is spotless, and put it back in the pump and secure the top. Remove the pool vacuum and hose from the skimmer and the pool, and put the clean basket back in there. Next go to the pool pump and place it in the backwash position, turn on the pump for about 2-3 minutes or until the site glass shows clear looking water, then shut off the pump, move to the rinse position for 30-60 seconds and shut the pool pump off, turn to the filter position, and turn the pump back on. If the water level is not at half line, add water, also add quick dissolve shock directly to the skimmer. Wait 24 hours and check the pool and it should be clear, but may have more dead algae or dirt on the bottom. This time you can just remove the skimmer basket and hook up the vacuum hose and repeat the cleaning process which will collect the larger stuff in the pool pump basket and the algae will go to the pump, but you can move a bit quicker. When done, disconnect the vacuum and hose and put the skimmer basket back in, shut off the pump and if larger debris was in the pool clean out the pump basket as previously done and put it all back. Then move the valve to Backwash for 2 minutes, rinse for only 30 seconds, and back to filter after shutting the pool off for each position change. Again top off the water to the half way mark and add a little quick dissolve again to directly to the skimmer. PS: The main algae growth source is usually in ladders doing into the pool, so they need to be removed and washed with a strong Clorox-water solution and hosed off and allowed to dry. Algae needs two sources for growth. UVA/UVB Light and high temperature that is above 78 degrees which is why we do not have algae problems in the colder weather. I use a pool pump and elevate the water up in the air about 10-15 feet to cool the water over night and I live in the swamps of Louisiana. LOL |
Question: | Can you use with vinyl liner |
Answer: | yes I use this on a vinyl pool liner |

Sanitizing
There are many different types of sanitizers used in various pool and spa environments. Clean and healthy water starts by establishing a proper residual chlorine level with shock or concentrated granular chlorine. The most common way to maintain a proper chlorine level is by using trichlor chlorine tablets in either a floater or chemical feeder. Treatment
Even after all your preparation, sometimes life happens and your pool or spa can get away from you. In those moments, we need to start back from the beginning with testing of the water. Now that you have a clear idea of the current readings, your next steps will depend on the type of symptoms your water is presenting. This may include an issue such as algae (green, yellow, black, etc.), cloudiness, living organics, debris, and other water conditions.
PoolRx Pool Unit #101001 6 Month Algaecide Treats 7.5k - 20k gallons
PoolRx eliminates existing algae fast and prevents algae from coming back. The chelated minerals free up low levels of chlorine to be more productive in the water, providing amazing clarity. The minerals dissolve out of the unit completely and immediately to form a stable residual throughout the entire body of water. As the minerals pass over the PoolRx unit during circulation, they are rejuvenated to last longer. The minerals are used up through algae kill, backwashing, splash out and filter cleanings. For longer season, larger pools, extreme conditions or green pools, you can add PoolRx booster minerals when needed. Replace the PoolRx unit at the beginning of each season for best results. PoolRx is ideal to use with Chlorine, Salt, UV or Ozone systems. Supporting any size body of water, PoolRx is perfect for both Residential and Commercial use.

User questions & answers
Question: | Directions for use, step 1: "add a chlorine shock per use directions and run pump for one hour." do i need another product to use this product |
Answer: | I don’t know what size pool you have but it is good practice to shock (over chlorinate) every 3 months. Your pool supply company or Google can help. The reason you shock before clarifier is to kill algae first. |
Question: | Can I use this in our coleman above ground pool |
Answer: | We have an above ground pool that we use it on. Not a Coleman pool, it's a much older pool that we have had more than 15 years. The last liner replacement was three years ago and we've used this product on our liner without any noticable damage from this treatment. Hope this information helpful. |
Question: | Is this safe for saltwater pools |
Answer: | Yeah, It's just shock. Saltwater pools disinfect the same as any other pool it's just that the chlorine comes from salt in the water being broken down into Chlorine and Sodium by the saltwater element in the piping. |
Question: | My pool water is clear but I’m having a hard time killing the allege that is on the wall. Will this take care of that |
Answer: | Hi, We are the manufacturer of Clorox Pool and Spa products. This algaecide is a great algae killer. It will need the assistance of chlorine and the pH will need to be in the proper range. If you have any other questions or concerns, please give us a call at 1-800-SOS-POOL. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product work on Simply Salt System |
Answer: | I have a saltwater system and this works really well with it it just took a little bit longer to clear out all the alge . |
Question: | can you use if had to treat water for iron,, we have iron stains removed and water balanced but are now having issues with algae even after shocking |
Answer: | I have used this product for several years, and it does a great job, but it does a much better job if you combine this along with the addition of Borax to your pool. If you add Borax, raise your Borate levels to around 50-80, and use this product, you will not have any problems with any type of algae growth. If you have small dogs that drink the pool water, it is best to keep the Borates between 30-50, but no higher. |
Question: | How long do you need to wait to go swimming after adding the Seaclear |
Answer: | I can't recall that there was any required wait time but I would add to the pool water in the evening and circulate overnight. This algaecide is so worth the money and will last three months pretty much to the day it was first added. |
Question: | I have a fifteen to twenty thousand gallon pool will I need two bottles? I have tried expensive products and just want one that works. My friend on face book recommended this as a great product that works |
Answer: | My pool is 18,000 gallons, and I tried this product. The first two weeks the pool looked great. A slight drop in chlorine left me with mustard algae. This product will work if you keep your chlorine at the correct level, but so will the aqua chem 20% algaecide, which costs less than 10% of the SeaKlear when you consider that the maintenance level is only 6 ounces. There is no product on the market that will keep algae out of your pool if you don't maintain your chlorine level. Here in Florida, mustard algae is persistent, and is in the air, so we fight that every year. It is much cheaper to buy a mustard algae killer and shock the pool every week during the swimming season. One product I use is a phosphate remover. Most algaes require phosphates to grow and thrive. Anything you can do to keep the phosphate level low will help. Any pool place can test for phosphates. We do not have our pool covered, and have lots of trees. Leaves get in the pool and increase the phosphate levels, so I use the phosphate remover for that purpose. The one I have is made by SeaKlear. |
Question: | I have three crane pumps in my fountain. Is this product safe for the pumps? They are a mix of metals. Brass, stainless etc |
Answer: | Safe |
Question: | Does this product stain cement |
Answer: | It absolutely does not stain cement. My fountain is cement. When you first put FounTec into the fountain the water turns the color of Caribbean ocean water. Quite beautiful. But this fade in a couple of days. Even the blue water that cascades out of the fountain doesn't stain the cement. I have used this product for years (15) and reorder every year. I highly recommend it. Does not harm the birds that drink out of my fountain. |
Question: | What kind of non chlorine product should be used to eliminate existing algae growth before using the fountec as a maintenance product |
Answer: | It depends upon the amount of algae you're dealing with, realizing that chlorine-based products are far more effective than non-chlorine (with names often starting with "oxy ...". This article explains the pluses and minuses of both sanitizers: https://blog.poolcenter.com/article.aspx?articleid=6631 |
Question: | Does this eat away the finish/paints of a poly-resin fountain |
Answer: | Has not affected my natural rock & concrete waterfall. No effect on two in-ground black vinyl koi ponds either. Unsure of painted surfaces ... depends on the paint & how applied. |

User questions & answers
Question: | why should it not be used with well water |
Answer: | Because it's not safe for drinking water. If you use well water in your pool, then that's just fine. |
Question: | What is in this product that bans it from certain states? The description mentions you can swim immediately after use. Is this wise |
Answer: | I have no clue what would ban it. We swim immediately after use and have not had any problems |
Question: | I have black algae spots on the walls of my pool. Is this the best product for the job |
Answer: | You probably want to use a combination of products , chlorine-based , copper-based as this product , and algea control ( sold under many different names )which boosts the chlorine ability to penetrate the algae cells . The higher the copper content the more bang for your buck, don't use too much you end up with copper staining , be careful to maintain copper level for Or you will have the trouble all over again the algea actually consumes the copper and dies so as it works to kill the algae the copper level will go down . The trick to keep the algea away is stability , a stable chlorine , copper, algicide level will keep your pool happy. easier said than done |
Question: | Can you use with bromine |
Answer: | You will have to ask In The Swim about using in Bromine. My pool is chlorine. |

Now that you have a clear idea of the current readings, your next steps will depend on the type of symptoms your water is presenting. This may include an issue such as algae (green, yellow, black, etc.), cloudiness, living organics, debris, and other water conditions.
- KEEP ALGAE AT BAY - This product is effective in controlling a broad range of algae. Especially effective against Chara(Stone wart), Spirogyra, Cladophora, Vaucheria Ulothrix, Microcystis, Oscillatoria, Mustard Algae and Black Algae. The triethanolamine in this product prevents the precipitation of the copper with the carbonates or bicarbonates in the water. Rx Clear Copper Algaecide is used to prevent and kill unwanted infestations in your swimming pool.
- COAT THE WALL - Algaecide coats the walls of the swimming pool, keeping algae in suspension. Surfactant splits open algae cells, helping to destroy them. The Rx Clear Copper Algaecide coats the pool wall, keeping your swimming pool crystal clear.
- BIWEEKLY MAINTENANCE - Each bottle of Algaecide is 32 ounces of fluid. Swimming pools require only 4 oz. of Rx Clear Swimming Pool Algaecide every two weeks per every 10,000 gallons of water.
- SAFE TO SWIM - This fast acting treatment lets you swim directly after placing in your swimming pool. Algaecide can even beat black, green and mustard algae, all while being safe for swimmers.

Product description
The 4pack of PoolRx Blue Units is just that. 4 individual units, each PoolRx Blue Unit supports 7, 500 - 20, 000 gallon pools. PoolRx is an easy to use algaecide that reduces chemical demand, improves water quality, lasts for up to 6 months, and really works! PoolRx contains a proprietary blend of minerals that continuously and effectively eliminates algae. Simply pick the correct sized PoolRx unit based on total gallons, clean your filter first, then, drop the PoolRx unit into the pump basket or skimmer. The specially treated alloy cylinder is packed with the PoolRx mineral formulation. These minerals immediately dissolve out of the cylinder and form a stable residual throughout the pool water for up to 6 months. The minerals eliminate the algae while freeing up low levels of chlorine to be more active and productive in the water. During the pools filtration process the minerals are rejuvenated every time they return and pass through the cylinder. PoolRx works synergistically with a constant low level of chlorine. Residential (0. 5-1. 0ppm); Commercial (1. 0-5. 5ppm) If needed, a PoolRx Booster The (part# 102001) can be added for longer seasons, larger pools or tough condition. The PoolRx unit is effective in rejuvenating minerals for up to 1 year in the water, so start with a new PoolRx unit at the beginning of each season for best results. PoolRx has been simplifying pool and spa care since 1994 and can support any size body of water. PoolRx is also ideal for Salt Pools.
- Simply place in pump basket or skimmer basket

User questions & answers
Question: | I bought this and I just put in my 4th one & it dissolved with blue goop/liquid everywhere. Is it defective or does it have an expiration date for use |
Answer: | There is no expiration date and what you have described would not indicate a defective unit. A few questions though. How large is your Pool and are you saying you put all four in at once? PoolRx units are not “time released”. So when you put one in, all the minerals dissolve out of the unit and into your pool within a few hours of pump runtime. If possible please contact us through the PoolRx website so we can better understand and help resolve your issue. |
Question: | I was told to put Silvertine in my water because I still see algae even with Pool RX. Will this be counter productive or hurt the product Pool RX |
Answer: | Hi. Silvertine is an algaecide and quite expensive. PoolRx does really good at controlling algae as long as there is chlorine in the water. If you are going to use an algaecide in addition to the PoolRx , use either a copper based one OR one with 60% polyquat. I am a pool service owner in San Diego and use PoolRx in some of my pools, none of which need an algaecide. |
Question: | Can you use algaecide with pool rx |
Answer: | Yes. I have had mine in the skimmer since the beginning of the season and it’s worked great. I have added algaecide only twice. I haven’t needed it because this works so well but now (at the end of the season) I felt like I should add some. |
Question: | How long after I drop the pool rx in the skimmer basket should I take it out? Or do you leave it in permanently |
Answer: | The PoolRx unit has a effective life of 12 months in the water. After the first 4-6 months you will need to add 1 PoolRx booster (#102001) per 20k gallons for the product to continue to work for the remaining life span of the unit. So NO absolutely do not remove the unit from the skimmer. It needs to remain in the pool for the minerals to continue to work. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this product considered "polyquat 60" algecide used for winter closing of an inground pool |
Answer: | Yes, it's the same product. |
Question: | Does it contain copper |
Answer: | It's Polyquat 60, cheaper than anywhere local, with free shipping it's a bargain. No Copper.Look up Polyquat 60 on the internet, it's the only algaecide to use. |
Question: | Does this eliminate calcium scale |
Answer: | No, this doesn't work for calcium scale. FamilyPoolFun |
Question: | can I use this to close my pool for winter? How much to use & how long before |
Answer: | I did not receive the entire question from Amazon. The end reads & how long before! I have used it for several years to close my 18000 gal pool. They suggest 16oz per 10000 gals. I use 32ozs added at time of closing. In the past I have had continuing problems with algea in late summer. Since the regular use of PHOSfree, I haven't had any algea at all, even upon opening. This seems to have solved my problems more than algeacides, but I still use them to be on the safe side. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this a quat algaecide |
Answer: | Hi FloridaSteve, We are the manufacturer of Clorox Pool and Spa products. Yes, this is a quat based algaecide. If you have any other questions or concerns, please give us a call at 1-800-SOS-POOL. |
Question: | What is the active ingredient |
Answer: | Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride 50 percent, "other" 50 percent. |
Question: | Can i use it on a index pool |
Answer: | Hi Dalia, We are the manufacturer of Clorox Pool and Spa products. This product is compatible with Intex Pools. If you have any other questions or concerns, please give us a call at 1-800-SOS-POOL. |
Question: | after I use this i would like to drain the pool halfway but the drainage goes into the grass, will it kill my grass |
Answer: | No, it will not kill your grass. However, why are you draining your pool? Once you use this, make sure your chemicals are still balanced and then get some FLOC. Add as directed and after it has run in your pool for a while, turn your pump off for 24-48 hours. Everything should drop to the bottom of the pool where you can vacuum it out; make sure you put your filter to waste. That's what we have done with a great deal of success. Good luck! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Should i just use in the spring or can it be used in the fall as well? also are we talking put it in the skimmer or back in the basket by the filter |
Answer: | This is just the booster for the Pool Rx cartridge that should already be in the pump filter, which I change out every spring, then add the Pool Rx booster/algaecide replacement 4-6 months later depending on the amount of use my pool gets. |
Question: | What products do I need for my 20x40 pool? (Approximately 33,000 gallons of water |
Answer: | A pool RX unit is the best way to go. You can use liquid clorean and or 3inch tablets , just keep checking your pool with your test kit and you should not have to use any other chemicals in your pool. If you have heavy use or get a lot of rain shock it and you are going to be fine. |
Question: | Can you keep using booster tabs without ever replacing the original unit? What's the difference between the two other than the plastic cage? What about the booster granules, more expensive than the booster tab. Anyone know what's up with the booster granules |
Answer: | We use Poolrx in about 50 of our accounts. I only replace the blue unit if the customer loses it. Each spring we add a booster pack of minerals. No problems even with 9 year old blue units. |
Question: | How important is it to clean the filter first? I have a newer pool (Less than 6monthd old) but already have an algae problem |
Answer: | Very important to use after cleaning your filter. it goes in your pump basket and will go through your filter system. It helps fight algae and helps to lower your chlorine and acid consumption as well. If you have to clean your filter because it's dirty then you will lower the life of the product. Hope that helps. |
