13 best mole traps

Mole traps are devices designed to capture and eliminate moles, which are small burrowing mammals known for causing damage to lawns and gardens. These traps are a part of pest control strategies aimed at managing mole infestations. Here are some key points related to mole traps:

  1. Types of Mole Traps:

    • Spring-Loaded Traps: These traps use a spring mechanism to capture moles when they trigger the device while moving through their tunnels.
    • Scissor-Jaw Traps: These traps have scissor-like jaws that close when triggered, capturing the mole.
    • Choker Loop Traps: These traps work by looping around the mole's body when triggered, effectively restraining the animal.
  2. Placement and Installation:

    • Tunnel Identification: Effective mole trapping involves identifying active mole tunnels.Traps are usually set in these tunnels or near molehills.
    • Depth: Traps should be set at the proper depth in the tunnel to increase the likelihood of trapping the mole.
  3. Safety Considerations:

    • Handling: When setting up traps, it's important to follow safety guidelines to avoid injury. Some traps may have strong springs or mechanisms that can cause harm if mishandled.
    • Pets and Wildlife: Traps should be placed in a way that minimizes the risk of harm to non-target animals, including pets and wildlife.
  4. Effectiveness:

    • Species-Specific: Mole traps are designed to target moles specifically and may not be effective for other pests.
    • Skill and Experience: Effective use of mole traps may require some skill and experience. Following guidelines and instructions is crucial for success.
  5. Alternative Methods:

    • Repellents: Some homeowners may opt for mole repellents, which are chemicals or devices designed to deter moles from the area.
    • Natural Predators: Encouraging natural predators like owls or snakes, which feed on moles, is another approach to mole control.
  6. Legal Considerations:

    • Regulations: Before using mole traps, it's important to be aware of any local or regional regulations regarding trapping and pest control.
  7. Maintenance:

    • Checking Traps: Regularly checking traps is important to ensure they are functioning correctly and to remove captured moles promptly.

It's crucial to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer when using mole traps to ensure their proper and safe use. Additionally, understanding the habits and behavior of moles can contribute to more effective trapping strategies.

User questions & answers

Question: Why are the pictures of these two totally different products
Answer: You have 2 competing versions of the same basic trap here. The main picture with the flat metal plate construction is the right one, and will work better. The picture with the bent steel rod framing looks exactly like a slightly cheaper version of this trap which has had some durability issues noted. (the trigger plunger tends to break off). Also, the bent rod framework tends to sink into the ground too far when setting the trap. The Wire Tek 1001 is easier to set correctly, although it does cost a few bucks more.
Question: This thing actually works a little too well. Can anyone tell me of a trick or easy way to release it to dump all the bodies? Step on it again
Answer: I pull the set trap out a little just to make sure there is a mole in it. Then I push it back into the ground and step on it. This releases the mole which I just leave buried in the ground. Then I take a stick and carefully push the trap out of the ground. Once clear, I tap the stick end against the trigger to release the trap.
Question: I don't understand where you place the trap. I have several spots where mounds are left in the yard. Do you dig down and place in the tunnels
Answer: I use a skewer to poke around the mounds to see where the run is. One mound had no visible tunnels so I placed it in the mound and caught the mole. If I can see or detect a run with the skewer I place it in the run. Had mine for a week now and have caught 2 moles.
Question: is there anyway to adjust the sensitivity of the trigger on these? the moles just dig under without setting it off
Answer: My trap was also not sensitive enough to trigger when moles dug under it. To improve sensitivity I cut a 1 X 1-1/4-inch rectangular shim out of a 1/16th-inch thick piece of hard plastic and glued it inside and at the end of the 1-1/4-inch-wide iron channel that has the yellow label. The shim prevents the cocking mechanism from rotating as far past the triggering point when the trap is set. I now have caught 4 moles in 4 tries. Your trap may need a thinner or thicker shim than mine in order to stay cocked with improved triggering sensitivity, depending on manufacturing tolerances.

User questions & answers

Question: Why is it Taking forever to ship
Answer: Didn't order from us. We would ship next business day. Barbara
Question: Will this trap / kill Voles
Answer: I seriously doubt it. I have been trying for over a month and have not caught any. I would not buy this style for voles or moles.
Question: how to set
Answer: Please contact our Consumer Relations Team for assistance with setting the trap. We can be reached at 1-855-5-VICTOR (1-855-584-2867).
Question: there appears to be no way to hold trap down while pulling plunger up
Answer: In my opinion there is not an easy way to set this trap. I pull on the spring loaded ram with one hand and hold on to the frame with the other hand. It is easy for hand to slip off the frame. It is important to get the trigger in position before setting trap so the latch falls in place when the ram is pulled back. In any case it is difficult to set this trap.

Victor Mole Trap

It is time to take control of your garden or lawn with the Victor Mole Trap. Use this trap to effectively kill moles without the use of poisons or harsh chemicals. This trap is weather-resistant and features a plunger-style body that lets you use it repeatedly wherever moles happen to pop up in your yard. The safety pin ensures secure operation, and it comes fully assembled, ready for use!

Why Stop the Moles?

Moles and Gophers fall into the irritating garden critter category and really can do some massive damage. Moles dig tunnels underground to navigate through, although in their process they chew up root systems and mess with plants nourishment systems.

Setting the Trap

  1. Flatten out all tunnels, wait 24 hours, then set traps in these locations.
  2. Make a depression in the roof of the main tunnel by pressing down with your thumb.
  3. Center the trap on the tunnel, with the activator plate directly over the depression you’ve made with your thumb.
  4. Push trap down until spears have bottomed out.
  5. Preset spear holes by plunging spears up and down until they travel easily to the bottom on their own.
  6. Before setting the trap, make sure the latch lever is OUTSIDE the pan.
  7. Holding the trap frame in place, rapidly pull upward on the setting handle until the latch lever snaps over the pan.
  8. Trap is set. If necessary, apply slight downward pressure to ensure the activator plate is fitting IN the thumb depression, contacting the roof of the tunnel.
  9. Trap has fired. Remove mole.

Benefits of Plunger Style Trap

The Victor Mole Trap has weather-resistant spears that remain below ground when the trap is set. This ensures that the sharp points of the spears are not accessible to children and pets. The plunger-style design effectively eliminates moles in their tunnels to help restore your garden to its former condition.

User questions & answers

Question: what is your warranty
Answer: I don’t know what the warranty is but there’s not really anything that can go wrong with them.
Question: How much weight is needed to set this trap? I have tried repeated and cannot get enough pressure down on it. I weigh about 120 lbs
Answer: At 120 your problem is technique. Stand facing the high point of the lever and step straight down. Note picture orientation and stand to the right side. This is the best trap around. I’ve caught 127 Moles on my acre lot in 10 years.
Question: Will it work on shallow tunnels
Answer: It was designed specifically for shallow or surface tunnels. I have over 50 of these traps as I catch the as a side gig and 98% effective. Occasionally my placement may be in too deep of a tunnel and that is me taking a shot if no better placement is found. My rule of thumb is if I can stick my finger in the tunnel and fell the open tunnel, my trap will work. If all I feel is dirt or barely reaching the open-air part of the tunnel, it won't work as a mole will travel below it and never trigger it.
Question: Are u happy with this unit and does it work
Answer: Follow the directions included exactly and it works great. For three years I paid an exterminator to get my moles that were coming onto my property because my neighbors on both side of me had them. It cost me over $2000. So I would say the price of the traps are well worth it. The problem with an exterminator was it usually took them two to three days to get out to set the traps. My exterminator used this brand of trap, so I went to amazon purchased the exact brand and model. Best purchase ever. We are now able to set the traps earlier, thus eliminating the destruction the moles make. I bought three sets of two traps, to have plenty on hand when the moles get active and spread out to make their nests., Place the traps on the most recent track. You can tell the most recent track by the fact that the dirt line with be raised and freshly crumbled looking and you will see little air holes along the dirt line. The fresher the track the faster you can catch the mole. We usually keep the trap in the ground after it has sprung for at least 12-24 hours and then pull it to dispose of the dead mole; use gloves because you do not want human scent on it. Also do not wash the trap. Simply clean the spikes by pushing it in and out of the dirt. Once you have had moles, it is important to survey your property on a regular basis, so you can get them before they make a lot to dirt tracks. The more dirt tracks there are the harder to catch the mole. If you set a trap in a fresh track you are likely to trap the mole in less than 24 hours. The shortest time it took us to catch a mole was 15 minutes and on average 6 to 12 hours.

Question: does latch break off
Answer: I have not experienced any problems with the latch. Just have not trapped any mole.
Question: Will this work on voles

User questions & answers

Question: How much strength does this trap need to set? My husband & I are having the hardest time setting this trap. Trying to figure out if it is defective
Answer: Tough to say, have no idea what kind of shape your in :) I know that you pull the black shaft towards you until you hear a click, indicating the trap set. Might want to try a few times out of the hole for practice and to 'feel/hear' the click. Good luck!
Question: I see in the reviews that this unit has broken for some after only a few uses. What is the warranty on this unit
Answer: My wedge tool broke so I emailed them about warranty. There is zero warranty! Not only have I purchased 6 of these but two of my neighbors also purchased a bunch because I told them about the trap. Best that gopher hawk could do for me is allow me to buy another trap set with the wedge. Are you F ing kidding me? Piss poor service if you ask me! Least they could do is give me a free cheap piece of plastic wedge tool!
Question: What do you do when they aren’t dead
Answer: As unsavory as it sounds, but in an effort to expedite the obvious outcome for the gopher, I have on 3 occasions stomped on the Gopher. I wear a sized 16 shoe and death for the animal is certain and immediate. Sounds gruesome, but It only suffers in the snare another second or 2 from the time I retrieve it utill It's dead. Dont get me wrong. I'm not holding a funeral wake for any of these destructive pests, but I take no satisfaction in it either. It's just to me the quickest easiest way.
Question: I accidentally ordered just the trap. Can it be set without the wedge and probe tools
Answer: The probe is easy to do without - just use a long screw driver to find the hole. The wedge is going to be harder to live without. It does a nice job opening up the tunnel without collapsing it. My advice would be to buy another full kit and then you can have two traps set at the same time.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these traps the older ones with a strong spring or the newer ones with a weaker spring
Answer: I recently ordered 4 of them and ended up with the steel ones with the weaker spring. I've already had one mole avoid being caught and since I've already caught 26 moles with my other ones this year I know what I'm doing.... The new traps are not as good and I will probably return them!
Question: Has anyone gotten positive results following exactly the instructions on the box as provided by the manufacturer
Answer: I have tried other traps with little to no luck. I now have 6 of these traps and caught 14 moles this year from August thru December on about 2 1/2 acres. I don’t wear gloves but after stomping down their tunnels I remove the grass at the trap, then use a wide putty knife to cut grooves in the ground so the trap easily slides down. When I set the trap I make sure the trigger is barely on the rod, hair pin. Now when I see a new tunnel I feel confident I will have him within a couple days. These traps are awesome.
Question: Home depot sells this for $9.97. I would buy here but that seems like a waste of money for $3 more
Answer: Fact: Home Depot has shelf space marked for and sells these metal traps. Less than 10$. The V shaped metal pieces are purely for leverage to set the trap for weaker people. They are not part of the set trap. But all of the parts of the trap are metal. Also Home Depot has the Military 10% discount with just a show of your military pink or green ID. Simple. No loyalty sign up required like Lowes requires.
Question: How do you know if it is a mole or a gopher
Answer: Gophers are often mistaken for moles. However, the surface evidence is quite different and not difficult to identify if you take the time to learn to identify gopher vs. mole activity. A gopher does not dig surface tunnels like a mole, and the gopher mound is shaped differently. If you look down on a gopher mound, you will see a distinct crescent or horseshoe shape with a plug of dirt at the top of the crescent or horseshoe. You should also see other mounds close by. If you don't see fresh mounds, look closely for freshly plugged holes 2-3 inches in diameter. These plugged holes can be difficult to spot, but may be your only opportunity to set a trap. The 2-3 inch plugged holes are referred to as "feedholes" because the gopher is not excavating at these places. It is digging to the surface to eat above ground, feeding close to the safety of its tunnel. Gophers always plug their tunnels and feedholes. If the tunnel is open, it is abandonned or possibly there is a vole living in the tunnel.A gopher is strictly an herbivore. Moles eat bugs and worms, not plants. Gophers will eat just about any plant. The crescent shaped mound and dead and wilted plants are a good indication that a gopher is your culprit. A gopher locates plants and roots in three ways; 1) the gopher can clip the roots off below the surface where the damage is not quickly noticeable, or it might clip the base of a plant to just above the surface as it excavates tunnels, 2) the gopher can pull plants growing above the ground into its tunnel from below, or 3) the gopher will surface above-ground, venturing a short distance from their hole to snag plants near the opening. As mentioned before, these openings are known as feedholes and vary in diameter from 2-3 inches depending on the size of the gopher.

User questions & answers

Question: Bought 2 of these traps but the moles do not create visible tunnels. They dig straight up and throw the dirt out of a hole. Where do I set the trap
Answer: The moles are after earthworms and grubs they tunnel everywhere and this past summer I trapped 7 and my neighbor 8. The tunnels will be in a line leading to and away from the mole hill. To catch them you have to locate the tunnel by stepping all around the mole hill and feeling for soft areas. Dig down approx. 3-4 inches and you will see a hole or tunnel running laterally across your lawn. Push down just a little on top of the tunnel to make the mole have to dig it out a little. Set the trap on top of the mashed down tunnel and make sure the trip plate is setting just on top of the ground
Question: How can I find the mole passage
Answer: moles leave a mound of soil as they push dirt to the surface. Feel the soil around the mound. What you’re feeling for is the soil to easily collapse, indicating there is a tunnel just below the surface. Garsum includes a couple of flagged stakes you can use to mark the run before and after the mound or between mounds. I placed my trap in the run between two mounds and slightly collapsed the run about 12” before and after the trap. To slightly collapse the run just step on the ground above the tunnel. You’ll feel it give way under the pressure of your foot.
Question: Two questions: 1) Why won’t this stayed cocked - as soon as I lift my foot up it pops back up 2) How does a mole trigger this trap to close on it
Answer: I have several of these type mole traps and to date my neighbor and I have caught 14 moles this year. The secret to setting the trap is to gently push down the ground in line with the mole tunnel. Straddle the tunnel with the scissor prongs and step down on the foot trigger assembly. Do not try to push the trap trigger flap into the ground just let it lay on top of the ground that you flattened earlier. Sometimes I have to put a thin board or twig under the trap frame to keep the frame from being buried and setting the trap off.
Question: What is the different between the mole trap and wire tek
Answer: I have read its description , it said the trigger device had been strengthened, you should set it up with gardening gloves

Are you very troubled by the rodents such as Moles, Gophers, Voles, snakes, etc. eating your plants and destroying your lawn? Choose it!!!Return your well-organized garden, yard or farm.

About rodents

Rodents are small and medium-sized mammals with a pair of chisel-shaped incisors. Chisel-shaped incisors grow for life, so they have the habit of grinding teeth and punching holes. Most rodents feed on plants, especially young shoots with higher water content, and mature seeds.Rodents communicate with ultrasound, and their auditory system is so developed that they are very sensitive to ultrasound.

Principle

The use of high-power ultrasonic pulses to effectively interfere and stimulate the rodent's auditory system, making it intolerable and panicking, showing symptoms such as loss of appetite, escape, and even convulsions. Thus, the purpose of driving rodents out of their range of activities can be achieved. The auditory system of rodents is between 200Hz-90000Hz.(Reference: Fay 1988, Warfield 1973, and The Nature of Sound)

Our Mole Repellent emits a 3-second 400 Hz sound pulse per 30 seconds to the surrounding area. Causes physical discomfort to Moles and produces fear.

Easy to use

First, punch a hole in the ground.

Next, press the "On/Off" button.

Then, insert the spike into the soil so that the lid is flush with the ground.

Finally, the compacted soil can be used normally.

PS: The denser the soil, the better the effect. Loose soil isn’t conducive to the transmission of sound waves. As the distance is farther, the frequency doesn’t change, but the loudness becomes smaller, so the farther the distance, the smaller the effect. It is strongly recommended to install one device per 50 feet.

  • Best Mole Repellent: With the Mole Repellent as the center, Buzzer emits a 3-second 400Hz sonic pulse per 30 seconds to drive away Moles, Gophers, Groundhogs, Voles, snakes, etc. humanely instead of killing, perfectly protecting you lawn.
  • Solar Power: It is powered by automatic rechargeable solar battery. It only takes 3-5 hours to fully charge in the sun, and lasts for 5-7 days when fully charged.Don't worry about replacing the battery.
  • Large Coverage Area: The effective coverage area of each Mole Repellent is up to 5000sq.ft.. Ensure that the Mole Repellent is inserted into the soil more than 8", and the ultrasonic penetrates the soil to force Mole to leave.
  • Waterproof and Durable: IP65 waterproof index allows it to work day and night without fear of storms. The polymer shell is destined to not be easily damaged.
  • Effective and Harmless: Moles can be driven out of your Lawn and Garden in only 2-4 weeks. Ultrasound in this frequency band can only make rodents, snakes and other pests instinctive fear, and will not affect people and plants.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you set it when the runs are only 4-5” deep? Pull up the tube and you are out of the hole. Wobble wobble
Answer: use two bricks holding the tube in place is enough. Actually I always work on new mound and the tube never go beyond 4-5" deep. Its okay
Question: How do you remove the gopher from the stick
Answer: Push the upper part (with the yellow streak) of the stick down the black portion. This releases the dead gopher or mole from the trap.
Question: How do you know when you've trapped a gopher
Answer: The yellow highlighted area will be exposed since when the trap is set to catch a gopher the yellow area is hidden
Question: Purchase trapping set first? It looks like it is a different size than the one with the kit. What gives
Answer: The set includes the trap, wedge and probe tool. It's the same trap whether you order the set or just the trap by itself.

User questions & answers

Question: is it possible for pet to get caught in it
Answer: The claw itself is underground. But the top part I’m unsure but best not to let any pets near it when it’s set.
Question: What is the country of origin
Answer: I have no way of knowing that.
Question: how do you release thele once caught
Answer: By “release” I assume you mean “release carcass from trap. Simple procedure...attempt to set trap as usual, when jaws are apart, use stick to remove critter from trap and dispose (of carcass). If you meant otherwise...perhaps you should consult a philosopher for your answer. IMO, some varmits do not lend themselves of my usual practice of “catch-release;” moles are in this category.

Find the Sweet Spots

Locate the mole tunnels in your yard. Flatten a few sections with your foot. If the tunnel gets rebuilt this is a good area for setting your trap.

Set the Trap

Once you have located an active tunnel, re-flatten the tunnel, place the trap over it and set the trap by pushing down with your foot.

Cover it Up

If children or pets are present, consider covering up the trap with a bucket.

The More the Merrier

Moles will travel throughout their tunnels, placing several traps in different locations will increase your likelihood of a catch.

Reduce the Buffet

Moles feed on worms, snails, grubs and other insects. If possible look for ways to eliminate the food sources in your lawn and garden.

Switch it Up

Moles are fickle creatures – if you aren’t having success trapping in one part of the tunnel switch it up every few days.
