12 best carpenter ant traps
Carpenter ant traps are specialized pest control devices designed to help homeowners and property managers deal with carpenter ant infestations. Here's what you should know about these traps:
Purpose: Carpenter ant traps are designed to attract and capture carpenter ants. These ants are notorious for burrowing into wood and causing structural damage to homes and buildings.
How They Work: Carpenter ant traps typically contain bait that is attractive to carpenter ants. This bait may include sweet or protein-based substances that lure the ants into the trap. Once inside, the ants cannot escape, and they eventually die.
Placement: To effectively use carpenter ant traps, you should place them in areas where you have observed ant activity. Common locations include near entry points, along ant trails, or in areas where you suspect a nest is located.
Non-Toxic Options: Many carpenter ant traps are designed to be non-toxic to humans and pets. They rely on attracting ants with food bait rather than using chemical insecticides. This makes them a safer option for homes with children and pets.
Monitoring: Using traps can also help you monitor the extent of your carpenter ant problem. If you notice a significant number of ants in the traps, it may indicate a more substantial infestation that requires additional pest control measures.
Disposable or Reusable: Carpenter ant traps are available in both disposable and reusable forms. Disposable traps are discarded when they become full, while reusable traps can be cleaned and refilled with bait.
Effectiveness: The effectiveness of carpenter ant traps can vary depending on the type of bait used, the placement of the traps, and the size of the ant infestation. They are most effective when used as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) plan that includes identifying and eliminating the source of the infestation.
Prevention: While carpenter ant traps can help manage existing infestations, it's also important to take preventative measures such as sealing cracks and gaps in your home's foundation, keeping food sealed, and removing potential ant nesting sites like decaying wood.
Remember that carpenter ant traps are just one tool in the arsenal of pest control methods. For severe infestations or recurring problems, it may be advisable to consult with a professional pest control service to ensure effective carpenter ant removal and prevention.

To kill common household ants, simply place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits stations near indoor areas where ants are spotted. Ants enter the trap, consume the liquid ant bait and return to the nest where they pass on the bait to the rest of the colony. TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are specifically formulated to allow worker ants to consume the product and survive long enough to carry the liquid back to the nest and deliver a dose to the rest of the colony . The liquid ant bait stations prevent the bait from drying out and provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Monitor the baits regularly for activity, but do not interfere with the ants or baits. Replace with additional baits when the first set is depleted. Depending on the size of the ant infestation, complete control may take up to two weeks.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is the pricing so weird? It's actually 2x more in bulk! Did someone make a mistake? Sorry for the rhetorical question, silly vendor person |
Answer: | It has to do with who the actual "seller" is. If you select a quantity of "1", in this case, it is "sold and fulfilled" by Amazon. If you select a quantity of "2" it is "sold" by another company while still being "fulfilled" by Amazon. Yes, both quantities are, as of this writing, "fulfilled" by Amazon but that just tells you that Amazon stores, packages, and ships both items(1 and 2 packs) even though there are, in reality, two different "sellers". If you click back and forth on the quantity selector you'll see the "sold by" name change. Look just under the price after you switch. The seller of the 2 pack sets the price whereas the seller of the 1 pack(Amazon) sets its own price. I'm sure Amazon buys the 1 pack in very large quantities and, therefore, can get a bigger discount, per piece, than the other "seller" can get, per piece, for the 2-pack. |
Question: | How safe is this product in the kitchen? We have a few ants crawling around our kitchen sink and would like to place one of these bait stations on our kitchen counter. Bad idea? Thanks |
Answer: | This is a generally safe product according to my research. Make sure to read the packaging and follow direction. (FOR INDOOR USE READ THE FOLLOWING) One lesson I learned the hard way: the sugary syrup is irresistible to ants, even though it is laced with poison. This means when you use Tarro, you're actually providing access to free food! The poison will work on the ants and it takes about 18-24 hours to kill them... but as you wait after 24 hours, Tarro syrup will attract other thriving colonies into your home. They'll follow the same rich trails laid behind by the previous colony and even scavenge on the carcases of the previously fallen colony. This cycle will continue, attracting ants from far away reaches and allowing them to setup massive colonies within your home. This is especially true with Argentine ants (available throughout the world), which form massive colonies with multiple queens - a trait unique to this type of ant, whereas others will battle for territory. So the lesson learned is simple... once the initial 1 or 2 swarms die down, remove all baits and all forms of food from open spaces in your home; patch up all openings in walls, baseboards, cracks around windows, etc; apply perimeter pesticide around your home; and look for signs of wandering ants in the next week. If you see more ants then you missed an opening and already have an established colony in your wall.... repeat!! Just don't leave out Tarro and keep replenishing, especially in the case of Argentine ants. |
Question: | Is this safe to have around pets? I have a curious cat |
Answer: | I'd say no. My cat knocked one of these over once and licked the syrup. She was fine but it wasn't a fun afternoon (trip to the vet, etc.). Terro sells a version of this that encloses the bait in plastic and has sticky squares to attach them to the floor, counter, or other surfaces. I use those instead now. |
Question: | I have a baby in the house and I would like to use this product to kill ants in my house. Any precautions you suggest before I use this product |
Answer: | The ant trails at my house sometimes go from the floor to the ceiling. I turn the bait so that the liquid will not run out and use Scotch tape to tape it to the wall next to the ant trail. I tape the bait high enough that babies and grand children cannot get to it. It usually takes two days for the ants to disappear. Then three days after they disappear, they return to the trap. Another two days and they disappear again. The second time they disappear is usually the last time I see them at that location. |

TERRO Liquid Ant Baits
Ants can be a problem anywhere – in the home, at work and everywhere in between. To kill common household ants, place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits in areas where they attract foraging ants that take the bait back to the nest. As the bait circulates through the colony, it kills the ants you see and the ones you don’t. The new and improved snap-off tab makes the stations easy to use. To open the bait, hold the station vertically and twist the tab. This opens up the station and allows ants to access the bait. Place the entire station on a flat surface, keeping the ant bait inside the station. Plus, the closed bait stations prevent the bait from drying out to provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Note: complete control may take up to two weeks.
How Liquid Ant Bait Works
Since this is a bait, initially you will see more ants – but don’t worry, this is a good thing. Why? As ants forage for food, they are easily attracted to the sweet, sugary liquid inside the bait stations. After finding the bait, worker ants consume it and leave behind a pheromone trail leading back to the colony. This trail lets other worker ants know where the newly discovered food supply is. This is why you will see more ants in the beginning.
Meanwhile, the active ingredient, Borax, is slowly interfering with the ant’s digestive system, ultimately killing it, but leaving enough time for the ant to go back and share the dose with the rest of the colony. This slow kill is necessary so that foraging ants can make several trips to the bait. The communal nature of an ant colony allows the bait to be spread to hundreds, if not thousands, of individual ants.
How to Use Liquid Ant Baits
TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are very easy to use. Before placing the bait stations, be sure to remove other sources of food, such as crumbs, sugar and grease spots to prevent attracting ants elsewhere. Do not place bait where you’ve already sprayed insecticides, as the pests may avoid the bait stations.
- Hold the bait station firmly with bait pack tab facing up. Break off the tab being careful not to spill the bait.
- Place the bait station label side up on a flat surface near signs of ants. Place additional bait stations anywhere they may enter your home. For best results, use all bait stations to ensure a sufficient supply for the ants.
- Monitor placements regularly, but do not interfere with the pests or bait stations. Replace when bait is depleted. Complete control may take up to two weeks.
- Once ants are controlled, replace the baits every 3 months to keep them from returning.

User questions & answers
Question: | How often do we have to replace the traps outside |
Answer: | Honestly, this was a waste of time and money. I set the traps and they did absolutely nothing for my ant problem. Either buy a different trap or a bug spray. |
Question: | How long does it take to kill the ants |
Answer: | In my experience it doesn’t kill ants at all. |
Question: | I literally got an empty container. Did anyone else have this |
Answer: | I have ordered twice. No empty container, but the grandules are small on the bottom. You just punch the 4 holes in the sides and put and watch the ants die. |
Question: | Once opened, how long do they last/are they effective for |
Answer: | i received them in the afternoon and spread them around my kitchen as soon as I got them. By the next morning (when they were usually the most active) they were almost all gone. Maybe 2 or 3 instead of an army. By the following day they were gone. I decided to leave them in place for awhile since they are out of sight. It did the job in a day, after that, what does it matter? |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have the colony under the kitchen cabinet on top of the refrigerator where do I apply the bait? I am desperate |
Answer: | I used it in small amounts all around, not in a perimeter line. I still have some left. I guess you can make 5 inches lines all around or something similar. Good luck. |
Question: | what is the shelf life of this product |
Answer: | They wouldn't carry it away from the nest. They would take it to the nest. Otherwise they wouldn't touch it. |
Question: | Barlett Tree service suggested this product to pour on the ground around a tree to kill carpenter ants in the tree. Do you think this would work |
Answer: | It is Protein. It is highly recommended to also use Maxforce FC Carpenter Bait Gel which is a sugar bait. You should always give ants a choice as they may be in the mood for either a protein (granule) or a sugar (gel) bait. |
Question: | Is this a sweet bait? Protein? Fat? All |
Answer: | Yes it can be applied inside and outside, sunlight not an issue, should get picked up pretty quickly, but yes easy to clean, do not over apply. |

User questions & answers
Question: | It seems too high off the floor for ants to crawl in, is this a problem |
Answer: | I did not see that as a problem. I saw very small ants getting to the bait. After a couple of days the ants were no longer around. |
Question: | Can these be used outside |
Answer: | I'm not sure about outside but it works great on the inside. |
Question: | Does it work on fire ants |
Answer: | I have used this product inside the house only - and that was on sugar ants. I have not tried it for fire ants, but I doubt it would be effective. My experience with fire ants is that there are so many in a mound they would probably fill up the trap in a few minutes and the others would walk right over them! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do I tell If they are empty? Unlike the indoor traps they are not clear |
Answer: | The trap should be replaced every 3 months. |
Question: | We haver grease eating ants. Is this the right product |
Answer: | Terro says product is for "Attracting and killing all common household ants including Argentine ants, ghost ants, cornfield ants, pavement ants, acrobat ants, white footed ants, little black ants, odorous house ants and other sweet eating ants." Terro is a sweet bait; grease eating ants are attracted to protein. They might go for Terro; however if protein sources are still to be found in your house they will probably ignore the bait. I haven't had a problem with grease eating ants, but I understand that from folks who have that the Combat formula is better for attracting grease eating ants. You can also make your own baits for grease eaters by mixing boric acid (a white powder you can find in drugs stores or hardware stores) with peanut butter. Just make sure that the bait is out of reach of kids and animals (I have used boric acid/watermelon bait successfully with sweet-eating ants. However, it can only be used indoors, as sun dries it up and rain washes it away.) Good Luck! |
Question: | Will this work on fire ants |
Answer: | Yes absolutely I had the worst ant problem I have ever seen when I moved into my new home. They moved in because of a drought in Texas. The first two days I did not see much of a difference and was about to write a bad review, but I had to go out of town, I left and when I came back the next week there were no more ants, not a single one, in fact it has been almost a year and I still haven't seen one inside or outside since. This stuff is amazing. Also my dog ate 2 of the yard baits we were worried he would get sick but he was perfectly fine that's a plus also. |
Question: | Will these work for carpenter ants |
Answer: | Carpenter ants infest every tree on my property and I found them foraging inside the garage (very bad news). Mostly for the garage, but also because I have one very nice pin oak, I placed 2 of these just inside the garage door and at the base of the tree and within 1 month no more ants. So, I guess it works on carpenter ants. However, if you use the trap per the package instructions the carpenter ants are too large to enter. What you do instead is push down and rotate as instructed to puncture the internal pouch then very carefully lift the cup back up to its original position and snap it into place. This opens the trap all the way around an the carpenter ants can enter. I intend to buy more as it works on almost every ant on my property. And that's a lot of different types of ants. You might also try Bayer Advance 375A. Its a protein based poison and if the ants don't have a sweet tooth that day they go for it. The terro traps make excellent bait stations for the 375A once the liquid is gone. |

TERRO Outdoor Liquid Ant Baits
When it comes to ants, baiting should be your first choice. Try TERRO Outdoor Liquid Ant Bait Stations. These large bait cups can actually be used inside or outside and work to eras the entire ant colony. Sweet eating, common household ants will run to the baits and carry the bait back to the Queen of the colony. Once the Queen has received the bait, the rest of the colony dies off.
Simple to Use
These pre-filled ready-to-use bait stations convenient and easy to install around your home or yard where ants have been observed. Stakes are included to secure the stations on various surfaces, including grass or gravel. Use without the stakes indoors in the home, basement, or garage as well!
What Type of Ants?
Luckily, most ants are sweet eating and love out bait. Our TERRO Liquid Ant Bait works with all common household ants including: Argentine ants, ghost ants, cornfield ants, pavement ants, acrobat ants, white footed ants, little black ants, odorous house ants, crazy ants, big headed ants and other sweet eating ants.
How it Works
When it comes to ants, always try to start with baiting. Unlike contact killers, which only target visible worker ants on your property, these baits include slow-acting ingredients that have a delayed effect on the ant's digestive system. This allows ants to feed and return to the colony where they can spread the bait to the young and queen. During this time, the number of ants may increase as they swarm to feed on the sweetened liquid before they begin disappearing altogether.
- CHILD-RESISTANT - Lab tested against child tampering, our indoor ant bait stations are perfect for homes with children and pets. Borax is a natural ant killer and is toxic to ants, NOT children and pets.
- MESS-FREE - Ant Baits stations are ready to use and activate with no set up and no spilling or leaking. Place them anywhere you see ants and without the mess.
- KILLS THE COLONY - Foraging ants take sugar ant bait gel or protein bait to the nest, feeding all the members. Sugar bait is fed to workers, protein bait is fed to larvae and the queen - thus sharing the poison bait with the entire colony.
- FAST-ACTING ANT BAIT GEL - Better than ant traps or liquid bait, our ant bait gel is easily carried to the nest for fast knockdown of the colony. Ants find the bait fast and are visibly diminished in days.
- YEAR-ROUND ANT KILLER - Each RESCUE! Ant Bait provides sugar gel and protein bait, killing more ants in every season. Our bait is more effective at killing ants than sugar ant traps and liquid sugar baits. More members of the colony consume the borax ant killer bait faster with RESCUE!.

Multi-Surface Ant Baits feature a discreet, two-color design. This innovation allows the baits to blend in with your existing decor so you won’t even notice they are there. Just choose the color that blends in best with the spot you are placing it – either white or brown – then apply the adhesive strip to the opposite side.
Where to Use
Place ant baits near ant trails and other locations where ants are numerous. It’s also a good idea to stop ants in their tracks by placing bait stations anywhere insects may try to enter your home. The multi-surface design provides flexibility with your placement options, including on walls, kick plates, and counter tops.
Bait Stays Fresh
Multi-Surface Ant Baits are sealed until you’re ready to use them. First, choose the perfect location for your ant bait. Next, twist off the tab to open up the bait. If needed, adhere the bait station with the included sticky tape. Remember: Until the tab is pulled off, the liquid bait inside stays fresh!
