12 best ant poisons
Ant poisons are substances or products designed to eliminate or control ant infestations in and around homes, gardens, and other areas. They are commonly used as a part of pest control strategies to manage ant populations that can be problematic for various reasons, including damage to structures, contamination of food, and nuisance to humans.
There are several types of ant poisons available on the market, each with its own mode of action and application methods:
Bait Stations: Ant bait stations are a popular choice for ant control. These stations contain a toxic bait that attracts ants. The ants carry the bait back to their colony, where it is shared with other ants, including the queen. This eventually leads to the elimination of the entire colony.
Sprays: Ant sprays are liquid formulations that can be directly applied to ant trails, nests, or entry points. They provide a quick kill and can also act as a repellent to deter ants from returning to the treated area.
Dusts: Insecticidal dusts are fine powders that can be used to treat cracks, crevices, and voids where ants may be nesting. Dusts are effective in reaching hidden areas and are often used for long-lasting control.
Granules: Ant control granules are spread on the ground or lawn to create a barrier that ants must cross. They release a slow-acting poison that disrupts ant colonies over time.
Gels: Ant gel baits are used indoors and can be applied in cracks, corners, and other hidden areas. Ants are attracted to the sweet or protein-based gel and consume it, leading to colony elimination.
Liquid Concentrates: Concentrated liquid insecticides can be diluted with water and applied as a spray. They are versatile and can be used for both indoor and outdoor ant control.
It's important to choose the right ant poison based on the type of ants you are dealing with and the location of the infestation. Additionally, always follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe and effective use, and keep these products out of reach of children and pets. If you are uncertain about which product to use or the extent of your ant problem, it may be advisable to consult with a pest control professional for guidance and assistance in addressing the issue.

To kill common household ants, simply place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits stations near indoor areas where ants are spotted. Ants enter the trap, consume the liquid ant bait and return to the nest where they pass on the bait to the rest of the colony. TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are specifically formulated to allow worker ants to consume the product and survive long enough to carry the liquid back to the nest and deliver a dose to the rest of the colony . The liquid ant bait stations prevent the bait from drying out and provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Monitor the baits regularly for activity, but do not interfere with the ants or baits. Replace with additional baits when the first set is depleted. Depending on the size of the ant infestation, complete control may take up to two weeks.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is the pricing so weird? It's actually 2x more in bulk! Did someone make a mistake? Sorry for the rhetorical question, silly vendor person |
Answer: | It has to do with who the actual "seller" is. If you select a quantity of "1", in this case, it is "sold and fulfilled" by Amazon. If you select a quantity of "2" it is "sold" by another company while still being "fulfilled" by Amazon. Yes, both quantities are, as of this writing, "fulfilled" by Amazon but that just tells you that Amazon stores, packages, and ships both items(1 and 2 packs) even though there are, in reality, two different "sellers". If you click back and forth on the quantity selector you'll see the "sold by" name change. Look just under the price after you switch. The seller of the 2 pack sets the price whereas the seller of the 1 pack(Amazon) sets its own price. I'm sure Amazon buys the 1 pack in very large quantities and, therefore, can get a bigger discount, per piece, than the other "seller" can get, per piece, for the 2-pack. |
Question: | How safe is this product in the kitchen? We have a few ants crawling around our kitchen sink and would like to place one of these bait stations on our kitchen counter. Bad idea? Thanks |
Answer: | This is a generally safe product according to my research. Make sure to read the packaging and follow direction. (FOR INDOOR USE READ THE FOLLOWING) One lesson I learned the hard way: the sugary syrup is irresistible to ants, even though it is laced with poison. This means when you use Tarro, you're actually providing access to free food! The poison will work on the ants and it takes about 18-24 hours to kill them... but as you wait after 24 hours, Tarro syrup will attract other thriving colonies into your home. They'll follow the same rich trails laid behind by the previous colony and even scavenge on the carcases of the previously fallen colony. This cycle will continue, attracting ants from far away reaches and allowing them to setup massive colonies within your home. This is especially true with Argentine ants (available throughout the world), which form massive colonies with multiple queens - a trait unique to this type of ant, whereas others will battle for territory. So the lesson learned is simple... once the initial 1 or 2 swarms die down, remove all baits and all forms of food from open spaces in your home; patch up all openings in walls, baseboards, cracks around windows, etc; apply perimeter pesticide around your home; and look for signs of wandering ants in the next week. If you see more ants then you missed an opening and already have an established colony in your wall.... repeat!! Just don't leave out Tarro and keep replenishing, especially in the case of Argentine ants. |
Question: | Is this safe to have around pets? I have a curious cat |
Answer: | I'd say no. My cat knocked one of these over once and licked the syrup. She was fine but it wasn't a fun afternoon (trip to the vet, etc.). Terro sells a version of this that encloses the bait in plastic and has sticky squares to attach them to the floor, counter, or other surfaces. I use those instead now. |
Question: | I have a baby in the house and I would like to use this product to kill ants in my house. Any precautions you suggest before I use this product |
Answer: | The ant trails at my house sometimes go from the floor to the ceiling. I turn the bait so that the liquid will not run out and use Scotch tape to tape it to the wall next to the ant trail. I tape the bait high enough that babies and grand children cannot get to it. It usually takes two days for the ants to disappear. Then three days after they disappear, they return to the trap. Another two days and they disappear again. The second time they disappear is usually the last time I see them at that location. |

TERRO Liquid Ant Baits
Ants can be a problem anywhere – in the home, at work and everywhere in between. To kill common household ants, place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits in areas where they attract foraging ants that take the bait back to the nest. As the bait circulates through the colony, it kills the ants you see and the ones you don’t. The new and improved snap-off tab makes the stations easy to use. To open the bait, hold the station vertically and twist the tab. This opens up the station and allows ants to access the bait. Place the entire station on a flat surface, keeping the ant bait inside the station. Plus, the closed bait stations prevent the bait from drying out to provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Note: complete control may take up to two weeks.
How Liquid Ant Bait Works
Since this is a bait, initially you will see more ants – but don’t worry, this is a good thing. Why? As ants forage for food, they are easily attracted to the sweet, sugary liquid inside the bait stations. After finding the bait, worker ants consume it and leave behind a pheromone trail leading back to the colony. This trail lets other worker ants know where the newly discovered food supply is. This is why you will see more ants in the beginning.
Meanwhile, the active ingredient, Borax, is slowly interfering with the ant’s digestive system, ultimately killing it, but leaving enough time for the ant to go back and share the dose with the rest of the colony. This slow kill is necessary so that foraging ants can make several trips to the bait. The communal nature of an ant colony allows the bait to be spread to hundreds, if not thousands, of individual ants.
How to Use Liquid Ant Baits
TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are very easy to use. Before placing the bait stations, be sure to remove other sources of food, such as crumbs, sugar and grease spots to prevent attracting ants elsewhere. Do not place bait where you’ve already sprayed insecticides, as the pests may avoid the bait stations.
- Hold the bait station firmly with bait pack tab facing up. Break off the tab being careful not to spill the bait.
- Place the bait station label side up on a flat surface near signs of ants. Place additional bait stations anywhere they may enter your home. For best results, use all bait stations to ensure a sufficient supply for the ants.
- Monitor placements regularly, but do not interfere with the pests or bait stations. Replace when bait is depleted. Complete control may take up to two weeks.
- Once ants are controlled, replace the baits every 3 months to keep them from returning.

Attract and kill the ants you see, as well as the ants you don’t see with TERRO Liquid Ant Killer. The liquid, which contains borax, is specifically designed to allow worker ants to consume the product, survive long enough to carry the liquid back to the nest. Ants consume the liquid ant bait and return to the nest where they pass it around to the rest of the colony. The active ingredient in the bait slowly interferes with the ants’ digestive systems, ultimately killing them. Since this is a bait product, you will initially see more ants as they are attracted to the liquid – but don’t worry, this is a good thing. After the bait is consumed, insect populations will begin to decline. Complete control may take up to two weeks. The 2 oz bottle offers plenty of ant-killing power to eliminate your infestation. For your convenience, TERRO Liquid Ant Killer is easy to use. Simply apply drops of the liquid ant killer directly from the bottle onto the smooth side of the cardboard tiles included on the packaging. Then place indoors on a flat surface near ant trails and other signs of ant activity. The more bait placements, the better. Be sure to leave the ant killer undisturbed while the ants are actively feeding on it.

TERRO ant killer
TERRO Liquid Ant Killer uses borax to kill the ants you see, as well as the ants you don’t see. It works by allowing the forager ants to consume the product and survive long enough to carry the sweet liquid back to the nest and deliver a dose to the rest of the colony. Over time, the bait kills the original ant and any ants that also consume it. Complete control may take two weeks.
To use this ant killing liquid, simply apply the product directly from the bottle onto the provided cardboard squares and place near indoor areas where ants are passing. Place TERRO Liquid Ant Killer near ant trails and other locations where they are numerous. Apply the baited cardboard tiles on the edges of sinks, tubs, windowsills, under food cabinets, along floors and baseboards and in corners.
How to Use TERRO Liquid Ant Killer
TERRO Liquid Ant Killer is very easy to use. Before placing the ant killer, be sure to remove other sources of food, such as crumbs, sugar and grease spots to prevent attracting them elsewhere. Do not place where you’ve already sprayed insecticides, as the pests may avoid the ant killer.
1. Tear the "Place TERRO Here" cardboard tiles from the packaging along the perforated lines. Then, apply drops of the liquid ant killer directly from the bottle onto the smooth side of the tile until they form a small puddle. You may also substitute with small pieces of paper, cardboard or foil.
2. Place the ant killer tiles on a flat surface near signs of target pests. Place additional tiles anywhere they may enter your home. The more bait placements, the better.
3. Monitor placements regularly, but do not interfere with the pests or bait while they are actively feeding on it. Add more liquid if it goes dry or add more tiles to ensure there's always a fresh supply for the ants.
How Ant Bait Works
TERRO ant bait works by attracting a large number of ants right away – but don’t worry, this is a good thing. As ants forage for food, they are easily attracted to the sweet liquid. After finding the bait, worker ants consume it and leave behind a pheromone trail leading back to the colony. This trail lets other worker ants know where the newly discovered food supply is. This is why you will see more ants at first, followed by a sharp drop off as the bait takes effect.
Meanwhile, the active ingredient, borax, is slowly interfering with each ant’s digestive system, ultimately killing them, but leaving enough time for the ants to go back and share the dose with the rest of the colony. This slow kill is necessary so that ants can make several trips to the bait, allowing you to get rid of the ants you see and the ants you don’t. Allow up to two weeks for the bait to take full effect.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this kill all species of ants |
Answer: | Presumably (but not verified scientifically) YES as it kills the Pharaoh ants which ARE established as the toughest common household ant species to kill. |
Question: | Can I dillute and spray this using a bottle sprayer (on ant trails going up some tree trunks |
Answer: | I don't know if it can be diluted and sprayed, but that is unnecessary regardless. All you need do is deposit some of the gel from the syringe in a few spots along the ant's trail, at the base of the tree and higher (it should stick to the bark). The ants will be all over it. They'll bring it back to their nest for the queen. Give it a few days, and you'll be pleased with the results! |
Question: | What is the active ingredient? What is the character of the attractant: sweet, protein, other |
Answer: | According to information on previous review the active ingredient is Fipronil. According to Wikipedia "It is a slow acting poison. When used as bait, it allows the poisoned insect time to return to the colony or harborage. In cockroaches, the feces and carcass can contain sufficient residual pesticide to kill others in the same nesting site. In ants, the sharing of the bait among colony members assists in the spreading of the poison throughout the colony. With the cascading effect, the projected kill rate is about 95% in three days for ants and cockroaches. Fipronil serves as a good bait toxin not only because of its slow action, but also because most, if not all, of the target insects do not find it offensive or repulsive." Regarding whether the attractant is "sweet" or "protein" -- I really don't know; however, the ants that we killed had been attracted to sweet thing. |
Question: | Does it kill carpenter ants |
Answer: | Yes. I have used this to kill carpenter ants. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it kill sugar ants |
Answer: | Yes! |
Question: | Will this product kill tiny ants? Also, will it get rid of the entire colony what is already nested in your house? Thanks |
Answer: | It kills every ant on your property if you use it right. It was more effective than my pest control companies stuff. Been using it for years. I am back here to order more. Don't use before it rains and use the whole product as it will degrade if you open and let it sit. |
Question: | Has anyone used this around lizards or squirrels? Or would anyone use it around these critters |
Answer: | I have used this product for a couple of years now. It works great. I sprinkle it around my home and around my yard perimeter. I have not seen a decrease in the gecko's/lizards so I assume they are ok. I don't think squirrels are attracted to it either. The product works great for about 45-60 days. |
Question: | My ants ignore this bait completely. They are not interested in sugar or p.n.butter either. What's the solution |
Answer: | Amdro perimeter bait is a preventive solution for around the outside of the house to prevent ant from coming inside. If you already have ants in your home, try a different solution...such as Terro Liquid and bait. They shouldn't ignore that. You will have to put up with an ant trail for a couple of days, but they will go away. |

Why is Bait Better?
Bait is considered one of the most effective methods for killing ants. Bait works even when you can't find the nest and unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen.
Bait is designed to taste like food, so it is enticing to ants. Once worker ants find the bait, they bring it back to be shared with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.
As a means to ensure that the bait is shared with all the ants in the colony, there is a delayed reaction before the bait begins to take its full effect and kill all the ants in the colony. Therefore, bait is considered to be more effective than contact killers since bait is shared with the entire colony, while contact killers will only kill ants that come into contact with the product.
With AMDRO, it's game over for ants.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Ant Bait take to work?
The active ingredient in AMDRO works with delayed action, ensuring worker ants have time to share the bait with the colony. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.
What is the best way to treat for ants I found inside my home?
If there are ants already inside your home, we recommend doing two things. First, use one of the AMDRO Kills Ants products listed for indoor usage above to kill the ants that are already inside. Second, apply AMDRO Ant Block Home Perimeter Ant Bait granules around the outside of your home to prevent ants from getting inside.
Do I have to reapply granules if it rained after being put down?
For best results, we recommend not applying the product when the ground is soaking wet or when heavy rains are expected.

Question: | Advion bed bugs |
Answer: | It’s designed to attract and kill ants. I seriously doubt it would be effective on bed bugs but I’ve been wrong before. |
Question: | What is the difference between this one and the one that say for german roaches |
Answer: | This product is labeled for Ants only. It has a different bait profile to attract ants and a different active Ingredient to kill ants specifically. |
Question: | Why does it say "made by DuPont," but the package clearly says it is made by "Syngenta |
Answer: | Actually, it is NOT Dupont that bought Syngenta. I did my homework too(April 2018) and see that as of 11 months ago, Syngenta was bought by ChemChina which is a chemical company owned by the Chinese government. I wonder if that is the reason people have started complaining that the product has not changed from an odorless gel to a horrifically stinky liquid. I bought this before with GREAT success (and I read up everywhere about its safety), but now...not willing to take the chance that I am putting some reformulated and maybe dangerous chemical in my house. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Ants are entering my son’s room near the ceiling. What is the consistency of this product? Will it drip if I apply it to the ceiling corners |
Answer: | The product has a gel like consistency but may also have some liquid when applied. The gel will run sometimes when applied to walls but this provides more bait for the ants. Do not disturb the ants while they swarm the bait. |
Question: | Does it have a strong odor? Thanks for your time |
Answer: | Hi! No---it has no odor that I've noticed, and you use very little at a time. You need to put it in the path of the ants and just little dabs at a time. It's a pretty thick gel so it sticks up around the ceilings, under a countertop edge, etc... just keep it away from pets and kids! |
Question: | Is this for sugar ants or protein ants |
Answer: | Sugar - says right in the description - The sugar-based gel matrix of Optigard ant gel bait is highly attractive to ants, which makes it extremely effective. |
Question: | if you used terro how does this compare |
Answer: | I have used Terro and I have found Optigard to be considerable more effective. What has worked well for me is to identify where the ants are coming from, and where their trails are. I then place a bead of about 1/2 inch, or so, near the entrance and on the trails. (If you are concerned about about pets or children touching the gel you might cut one inch pieces of drinking straws and put the bead of gel inside those) The ants are quickly attracted to the gel and you need to leave it alone. The ants will take the gel back to the nest and use it to feed the queen and the young ants. They will quickly die (a couple of days) and once the life cycle of ants is relatively short a dead queen means ne new ants. I've had really good results doing this. |

The Perfect Formula for Ant Elimination
The sugar-based gel matrix of Optigard ant gel bait is highly attractive to ants, which makes it extremely effective. Other baits can be too gooey, which prevents ants from transporting them back to the colony. However, the consistency of Optigard makes it easy for ants to carry to the colony and share with nestmates.
Optigard ant gel bait is also known for its durability under harsh environmental conditions. The formulation resists degradation caused by high temperatures and can retain its palatability for more than two weeks. Ants will continue to feed on Optigard ant gel bait even if the product dries out over time and the active ingredient becomes concentrated. This long-lasting effect reduces the chance of call backs and requires fewer applications.

Question: | Is this safe to use around plant |
Answer: | They suspend in water |
Question: | Why can’t this be shipped to my address in Minnesota |
Answer: | 6 inch.. Baby brushes at 4.5 I think.. Babies for the spring.. Big ones for late summer and fall |
Question: | What if the ground isn’t moist before application? Do the granules have to be wet to work |
Answer: | They work well on largemouth but you will get more bites on the baby brush hogs for sure ! I like the big ones because I have caught several big fish on them and tournament fishing you have to catch some bigger fish to compete |
Question: | Why will this state that it will not ship to my address in Texas, however, no problem with the shipping of the same product that is in the 4 lb size |
Answer: | In my opinion, this bait is best used for flipping into heavy cover, like weeds, grass or lay-down logs, etc. I rig it 'texposed' with a 5/0 extra-wide gap hook and a 1/2 ounce(or heavier, depending on the cover) bullet weight. If this terminology is unfamiliar to you, there are lots of good videos on youtube- it's abit complicated to explain with text, but by actually watching someone do it, it's not hard at all to learn. Use heavy line, at least 20# if you're using mono or fluorocarbon, but I personally use braid, 50# or even 65#, and a stout rod.All that being said, one CAN use the smaller sizes as a drop shot bait. Here is where spinning gear and lighter line, 8# or 10# test, depending on cover/water clarity, can come into play. Again, youtube can show you how to rig a Brush Hog on a drop shot rig. |

User questions & answers
Question: | would someone list the active ingredients percentage by weight |
Answer: | Hi Lisa! Yes! You may apply to trees and other ornamental landscape plants to control listed pests. You would just not want to apply to edible trees or plants. |
Question: | Can this be broadcasted in 12,000 foot garden without hurting plants(tomatoes, squash, peas,, lettuce)just got garden tilled & saw few ant mounds |
Answer: | Thank you for asking! Carpenter Ant & Termite Killer Plus would become rain proof, once it has been allowed to dry. However, you would not want to reapply for at least 2 weeks. |
Question: | Is this the same as the stuff that comes in the hard plastic container? I don't want to broadcast it. I just want to put it around the mounds |
Answer: | We answered this a few years back and did not mantion that it is a CONCENTRATED liquid. Wear protective masks and full coverage clothing. We spray for ants around the foundation and our deck every spring and we're set for the entire year. My grandson recommended a battery powered sprayer sold by Tractor supply for about $110. It makes up to about 19 gallons of diluted mix. Fantastic buy. Will reach 15 foot trees with ease. We thoroughly sprayed the top and underside of our deck with ease. Never see an ant. Fabulous product. Can hook it up to garden tractor battery or regular car battery, |
Question: | How long before the ants die? It's been 3 days so far and all the mounds are just as active as before. It hasn't rained, so that is not the problem |
Answer: | The instructions say yes to both. |

The Two-Step Method
What is the Two-Step Method?
The expert-recommended Two-Step Method to fire ant control is one of the best proven approaches to effectively manage fire ants, which involves broadcasting a bait over your entire yard and then treating individual mounds with granules.
- Step 1: Broadcast AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Yard Treatment Bait over the entire yard to kill the colony in both the hidden and visible mounds, as well as for season long control.
- Step 2: Target individual "problem" mounds with AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Fire Ant Bait.
Why is this method so effective?
Bait is considered the best method for killing ants since bait works even when you can't find the nest. Unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen. Worker ants find the bait and think it's food, so they bring it back to share with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ant bait take to work?
Given that ant bait is intended to be disguised as food, it has a built-in delay that gives foraging ants time to take it back to the mound to share. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.
Is AMDRO safe to use around livestock?
After applying AMDRO Kills Ants Fire Ant Yard Treatment Bait and AMDRO Fire Ant Bait we recommend that you do not graze or feed treated lawn or sod clippings to livestock.
IS AMDRO safe to use around pets?
While instructions vary by product, it is recommended that you do not apply the product while pets are in the treatment area. However, you can let your pets back onto treated areas once the dust has settled.
