The only draw back was, it was a little windy so it would fall over with the base because the base stand has no weight to hold it down. This would be the only draw back I had a couple of bean bags so I placed them around the base and it worked out fine. Yes, outside it works great. The light attracts them well. This can also be used as a swatter if you want to take it out of the base. You can also turn the light off If not needed and the zapper still works just as well. I hope this helps.

My best guess is the length of the working parts (grid) perhaps 8 inches long and 5 inches wide. The handle is about a foot long. If you want you can wait a day or 2 and I will give you exact measurements.
