Answer:	Probably shouldn't. That's by design so the movement of the canopy doesn't stress the frame. I suppose you could glue it together, but then you can't lower it.

Answer:	Yes it does, however it would be short. If you’re looking at the picture of the umbrella up and open, there is a thing that looks like a knob and then a lever you can lift up. Answer:	The cross base is the best support for the umbrella as it does had a drop feature and it does get bolted to the base I suspect a standard 3.5 weighted base would work as well but Not sure I’d recommend it. I purchased the sand bags weights to support the cross base also it is a little wonky without it make sure level ground is chosen for placement
