11 best battery chain saws
Battery chainsaws are outdoor power tools designed for cutting wood and performing various tasks such as tree pruning, limb trimming, and cutting firewood. They belong to the category of chainsaws and are particularly well-suited for residential and light to medium-duty professional use. Here are some key features and information about battery chainsaws:
Cordless Operation: Battery chainsaws are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. This cordless design offers the advantage of portability and freedom of movement, as there's no need for an electrical outlet or a gasoline engine.
Quiet and Emission-Free: Unlike gas-powered chainsaws, battery chainsaws produce minimal noise and emissions. This makes them more environmentally friendly and suitable for use in residential areas where noise and air pollution may be concerns.
Ease of Use: Battery chainsaws are generally easy to start and operate compared to gas-powered models. They don't require the manual pulling of a starter cord and are often equipped with a simple push-button or trigger start.
Reduced Maintenance: Battery chainsaws typically have fewer maintenance requirements compared to gas chainsaws. There's no need for fuel mixing, spark plug changes, or air filter cleaning. However, users should regularly check and maintain the chain and bar.
Battery Life: The runtime of a battery chainsaw depends on the battery capacity and the type of cutting tasks. Most manufacturers offer a range of battery options, and higher-capacity batteries generally provide longer operating times. Some models may offer quick-charging capabilities.
Power and Performance: Battery chainsaws are available in various power ratings, typically measured in volts (e.g., 36V, 40V, or 80V). The power level determines the saw's cutting ability and its suitability for different tasks. High-voltage models are generally more powerful and suitable for heavy-duty cutting.
Chain and Bar Length: Battery chainsaws come with different chain and bar lengths, which determine the maximum diameter of wood they can cut. Longer bars are better for larger trees and logs, while shorter bars offer increased maneuverability.
Safety Features: Many battery chainsaws come with safety features such as kickback protection, chain brakes, and low-kickback chains to reduce the risk of accidents.
Weight and Ergonomics: Manufacturers aim to design battery chainsaws to be lightweight and ergonomic, making them comfortable to use for extended periods without excessive fatigue.
Environmentally Friendly: Battery chainsaws are a more eco-friendly option compared to gas-powered models due to their lower emissions and reduced environmental impact.
Battery chainsaws are a popular choice among homeowners, gardeners, and professionals who need a versatile and easy-to-use cutting tool for occasional or regular outdoor tasks. Their cordless convenience, reduced noise, and low maintenance requirements make them a convenient and environmentally conscious choice for yard work and tree maintenance.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this model use a lot of oil |
Answer: | The model number 20262 will come with a smaller reservoir than most standard 12" chain saws. Be sure to always check the oil before and after each usage. |
Question: | Is the blade detachable |
Answer: | Hello, Yes, the bar/chain can be removed from this tool. |
Question: | How long does the battery last when in use ? Please say whether you are using the 2ah or 4ah battery. Thanks |
Answer: | 12" 40v 2ah. I spent 3 days cutting down and cutting up a 25-foot flowering pear tree. Cut all the limbs off the first day ( about 60 limbs ) on one battery. Put the battery on the charger overnight and then cut down the 14" trunk and cut it into small enough pieces to throw in the truck on one battery. The next day I cut up all the limbs into bite-size pieces to put into the fire pit, on one battery. I would say they last long enough to do almost anything around the house. So unless you're a lumberjack I would say this is plenty for small to medium size jobs. |
Question: | will this product use other GreenWorks 40V batteries |
Answer: | Not all Greenworks Batteries. Only the G-max batteries listed. For instance, the batteries listed with my Greenworks lawnmower is a 29302 for one of them and it is not listed as one that works. |

Auto Oiling System : This chain saw is equipped with an auto oiling system that keeps the saw chain and guide bar constantly lubricated. The oil level indicator 10 shows the level of the oil in the chain saw. If the oil level is less than a quarter full, remove the battery from the chain saw and refill with the correct type of oil. Always empty oil tank when finished cutting . NOTE: Use a high quality bar and chain oil for proper chain and bar lubrication. As a temporary substitute, a non-detergent SAE30 weight motor oil can be used. The use of a vegetable based bar and chain oil is recommended when pruning trees.Mineral oil is not recommended because it may harm trees. Never use waste oil or very thick oil. These may damage your chainsaw. Filling the Oil Reservoir Flip down locking lever and unscrew counterclockwise a quarter turn and then remove the oil cap . Fill the reservoir with the recommended bar and chain oil until the oil level has reached the top of the oil level indicator . Refit the oil cap and tighten clockwise a quarter turn. Flip up locking lever to its locked position.Periodically switch the chain saw off and check the oil level indicator to ensure the bar and chain are being properly oiled.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with a case |
Answer: | I don’t think this model can be switched to left handed control. |
Question: | Does this chainsaw cut 10” diameter trees |
Answer: | Hey Joseph, There's a variety of reasons for the difference in air speed. From the size of the blower tube, to differences in the overall CFM of air moved, a lesser air speed doesn't necessarily mean less air moved. A blower can move more air at less air speed and vice versa. To best assist you, I'd recommend looking at the blower you're considering based on the amount of air moved, Ie: CFM at the blower pipe. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for considering Husqvarna for your outdoor power equipment needs. |
Question: | Would this chainsaw be able to use a Dewalt 20v battery from a cordless drill |
Answer: | no it is round |
Question: | Is the chain pre sharpened or do i need to have it sharpened before use |
Answer: | The 350BF blows 180mph with its standard end tube and has CFM specs of : Air flow in housing 692.17 cfmAir flow in pipe 494.41 cfm |

User questions & answers
Question: | How much does it weigh |
Answer: | Haven't really weighed it, but it is a lot less than a gas powered model of the same size. I can say I've used it off and on during an extended time and arm fatigue never was a problem. But as with anything, your mileage may vary. |
Question: | Could this saw be used to cut thru a standard railroad tie (7 x |
Answer: | Yes it would, it wouldn't be fast. This saw is only about 1/6th HP. I used my 8"/18V NiCad saw (B&D) to cut/fit 4" landscape timber retaining wall and the size and weight and ease of use made up for any time lost. Scissors can also be used to mow your lawn. |
Question: | does it come without a battery and charger |
Answer: | Jim, I haven't even opened the package yet, but I presume it does come with a battery if you buy the $129 version, since there is a version without battery for $74. I don't know about the charger, but on the Black and Decker website one version is offered without a charger or battery. Sorry I can't be of more help |
Question: | How thick a branch can be safely cut with this saw |
Answer: | Pretty easily cut through a 10-11" tree, and still had a decent amount of battery left for additional cuts on some 4-5" branches. |

Question: | I have a greenworks 40v 2AH battery for another tool, can it be substituted in a pinch |
Answer: | Hello there, Yes all Greenworks 40V GMAX batteries are interchangeable with all Greenworks 40V GMAX machines are charger. |
Question: | How do I get my sew to cut. Chain came off i put it back on twice and it worked. Now is the third time it's came off ans it want cut |
Answer: | The chain fell off for me several times before I figured out that, in addition to adjusting the tightness of the chain with the cover off, you had to really tighten down the cover nut afterwards. Apparently, when a chain is new, it “stretches” some, so when using at first, finger-tighten it as much as you can (I’m not the strongest person, so maybe not as tight as *you* can:-). This problem will disappear after a use or two. If you put the chain back on and the saw won’t cut at all, the blade is on backward. I’ve been meaning to ask a knowledgeable person; would doing that be a viable way of sharpening the chain? Just curious. |
Question: | The manual says to charge the battery every two month. Instead, can I leave the battery on the charger all of the time when not in use |
Answer: | The reason why the battery needs to be charged every few months is because it employs an internal BMS (Battery management system). Most modern quality lithium batteries do these days. It keeps the cells in balance and prevents over charging and over discharging. They also don't require "smart" chargers because all of the smarts are in the battery pack itself. The minor drawback of BMS systems is that they draw a tiny amount of parasitic power all the time, so they will eventually discharge your cells. Leaving the battery on the charger should not hurt it because the BMS circuit in the battery pack prevents overcharge. |
Question: | Just received this from Amazon, manufactured on July 2013. Battery does not last long, anyone else having any problems with dated manufacture |
Answer: | " the saw turns off a lot. " If I bear down on it too much (overload) it shuts off; can restart immediately. Like a self-resetting circuit breaker. Saw is great for me, felling and cutting up dead trees for firewood, incl. Ash to 14 "Battery Date ( at end of SN - Serial Number ) is 12/05/16 Bought Summer or Fall, 2016?Battery label says "Charging . . . make sure battery is between 43 - 104 degrees F" so in winter, let it warm up before charging. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which version will last longer 60v or 40v |
Answer: | The 40 volt will last longer when paired with a 6 amp-hour or 7.5 amp-hour battery. 40v x 6 amp-hour = 240 watt-hours of energy. 40v x 7.5ah = 300 watt-hours of energy. 3ah x 60v = 180 watt-hours of energy. The 40 volt should last about 33% longer with the 6ah battery or 66% longer with the 7.5ah battery. |
Question: | Can this saw support a longer bar |
Answer: | Servicenet Dewalt has listed 2 items for purchase, can't find them on Amazon at present. N500117 (the 18inch optional bar for 40v/60v chainsaws). N500152 (the 18inch chain). |
Question: | When will a case be available to prevent getting bar oil everywhere? I want to carry a saw in the trunk in the winter and electric is perfect |
Answer: | The Stihl Woodsman case (part number 0000 900 4008) fits perfectly as long as you don't mind the lack of extra storage space for oil, spare chain, etc. I purchased one about two weeks ago at a nearby farm & auto store for under $45 and am very happy with it so far.. |
Question: | Which charger does this come with? Is it the all yellow Fast charger or the slower |
Answer: | DCB115 which is a 4ah charger, which is odd. My other flexvolt tool came with the DCB118 which is a 6ah charger. With the larger battery the send a slower charger. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I need chain saws for a 16" xcu07 chain saw. will any 16" chain fit |
Answer: | NO. You need size and pitch { chain tooth count}. Check with size guides and keep at least one of your chains that fit, packages for future reference. |
Question: | Can the saw bars be interchangeable from a 16" to 14" or to a 16" to |
Answer: | Yes, it has the standard bar like most chainsaws with 2 bolts and sprocket that chain goes over |
Question: | How long does the battery last once fully charged |
Answer: | For me, around 1/2 to 1 hour of constant cutting. But, it really depends on what you are cutting and the load you put on the saw. The saw doesn't like to be stalled and shuts down, probably to protect the battery from overheating. |
Question: | Will the other saws catch on fire after 5 mins of use like my first one did |
Answer: | I think they're designed to burst into flames at the 3 minute mark...so yours may be defective. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this powerful to cut trees of just branches |
Answer: | It will cut trees. It's powerful enough to do anything you can do with a gas saw. My husband has had his a year and loves it. His friend, who suggested buying the Wen, has sawed up pine trees and a huge eucalyptus tree. |
Question: | Will the charger work on 220v input |
Answer: | I just checked the charger unit and it is rated for 110 to 120 VAC. My unit was shipped to an US address so I can't say what would be shipped to the UK or other places with similar electrical standards. |
Question: | does this come with a case |
Answer: | No, it did not come with a case, but I'll tell you this, it is a great chainsaw. I did order two new chains from Oregon Chains. The one it comes with only has about 19 cutting teeth. Oregon chains doesn't sell that one. It's only sold to suppliers as to make the chain saw cheaper, though it did okay. I made about 50-60 cuts before my new chains came in. The new chains have about 28 cutting teeth and do a terrific job. The original chain still has some life in it but I prefer using the new chains. Love this chainsaw. I also bought an extra battery so I could cut for about 30-45 minutes and then switch to the other battery for another 30-45 minutes or so. Depends on how big and hard the wood is you're cutting. It does take about 90 minutes to recharge. But what a difference over using a gas chain saw and having to constantly restart it. With this saw, you just squeeze the trigger and when not cutting, it's off. I highly recommend it. |
Question: | Does this come assembled? Would I be able to hold and use it with bad arms |
Answer: | You have to drape the chain around the 'blade' then lay it in place before turning a plastic dial to tighten it down. That's the only 'assembly' required, and it's extremely simple. Once that's in place, there's another plastic dial to turn to tighten the chain. You must also buy chain lube oil as it does NOT come with it. It's about $4 at any WalMart or Big-Box store like Home Depot. Obviously, you have to charge the battery first, too. As to your arms, I'd have to know how bad 'bad' is. I'd say most adults could easily use it although it could be difficult to hold it up at eye level (or higher) for 'weaker' people where 'weak' is another word that has such a broad meaning it's almost worthless unless you have something to compare it to. All I can say is this thing is a total workhorse. I've made HUNDREDS of cuts with it and never had a problem, even when cutting a tree with a 14" diameter at the trunk. I love it and am extremely happy with mine. A neighbor saw me using it, and he bought one, too. He's 76, has no problem using it, and loves it. So unless you can't hold up 12 pounds or so for any length of time, it _should_ be okay. |

Question: | Does anyone happen to know the size of the flange bar nut which goes on this saw (I'm looking for some spares |
Answer: | Please call the Greenworks toll free helpline at 1-855-345-3934 and a customer service representative will be able to assist you. |
Question: | what's the difference between gcs 80420 & gcs |
Answer: | Hello there, Model gcs 80421 is our newest version. It's been updated to be more efficient and reliable. However, both will be more than suitable for your chore needs. |
Question: | What is the chain speed |
Answer: | The chain speed is 15 meters per second. |
Question: | Has anyone used this for an Alaskan Mill setup |
Answer: | Yes I actually got the Greenworks 80v chainsaw for milling because it was the best battery electric one I could find(No fumes while cutting). I have cut around 50 board foot with it intermittently over the past two years. The trick is to take your time and not force the saw. Also multiple batteries help since the batteries will overheat and will need some cool down time before they will recharge(5-10min). On average I'd say it takes about a minute per foot for an 8" thick log(2AH battery will last about 9 munutes). So for milling as a casual hobby it is great which is exactly what I was looking for. Planning on posting a youtube video soon. Also haven't noticed any bettery fade in 3 years of use(2 years milling). |

Answer: | I have been using Neutrogena lip moisturizer for many years and have always applied it by itself. I think it is the best lip moisturizer around. |
Question: | what chain fits this 14 inch model |
Answer: | no waxy or oily feel. feels like a balm. |
Question: | Will the Husqvarna 3/8" file kit work for this model |
Answer: | It should work. I put one on an old craftsman tiller. You just have to transfer the pulley from the old engine. |
Question: | I'm a little confused here... Is it cordless? Does it come with a charger? In the description it says corded electric but in the reviews it sounds co |
Answer: | I don't know if that specific model is a direct replacement dimensionally, but I swapped out a 1980s vintage B&S on a log splitter with this engine. It was a perfect alignment. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it use the same 40V battery as B&D 40v trimmer |
Answer: | Yes I have the saw and trimmer and the battery is the same. |
Question: | volt or 110 this chainsaw |
Answer: | The Black & Decker LCS1240 40-volt Cordless Chainsaw, 12-Inch is not electric. It runs off a 40-volt Lithium rechargeable battery. The battery charger and battery are included. The battery charger plugs into any common/standard household 2 prong outlet. When the battery uses up the charge the saw quits. There is no slow, gradual reduction of power. It takes time to recharge the battery. The battery recharges with common 110 household current. Does this help? |
Question: | Does the 40V cut faster than the 20V |
Answer: | Yes. The 40 volt chain speed is 5 m/s, whereas the 20 volt chain speed is only 3.5 m/s. |
Question: | Does it come with oil, or do I need to buy that right off the bat |
Answer: | No, it comes empty, so get some bar-chain lube ready. Also, hope you have some patience as it seems to take forever for the oil to show in the upper window. All I can say, it must have a pretty big reservoir below... LOL |
