3 best firewood for fire pit
Firewood for a fire pit is an essential component for creating a cozy and warm outdoor ambiance during gatherings or chilly evenings. Here's what you need to know about firewood for fire pits:
Types of Firewood:
- Hardwood: Hardwood, such as oak, hickory, maple, and cherry, is preferred for fire pits. It burns hotter and longer, providing sustained heat and fewer sparks compared to softwood.
- Softwood: Softwood, like pine, fir, and cedar, can be used, but it tends to burn faster and produce more sparks and crackling. It's best for kindling or quick fires.
Seasoned Firewood: Seasoned firewood has been allowed to dry for an extended period, usually for six months to a year. Properly seasoned wood burns more efficiently and produces less smoke. It should have a moisture content of around 20% or less.
Split Wood: Firewood should be split into manageable sizes for the fire pit. Smaller pieces ignite more easily and burn evenly.
Storage: Store firewood in a dry, well-ventilated area. Elevated firewood racks or storage sheds are commonly used to keep the wood off the ground and protected from rain and pests.
Safety Considerations:
- Safety Zone: Maintain a safe distance between the fire pit and any flammable materials, structures, or trees.
- Fire Pit Size: Choose the appropriate size of firewood based on your fire pit's dimensions.
- Fire Starter: Use fire starters or kindling to ignite the firewood. Avoid using accelerants like gasoline.
- Extinguishing: Always fully extinguish the fire before leaving the area.
Local Regulations: Check local regulations and ordinances regarding outdoor fires, including fire pit use and restrictions on burning certain types of wood.
Aesthetics: Different types of wood can produce various scents and colors of flames. For example, cedar can add a pleasant aroma to your outdoor fire.
Sustainability: Consider the environmental impact of the wood you use. Sustainable practices like using downed or dead trees or recycling wood can be more environmentally friendly.
Quantity: Calculate how much wood you'll need for your fire pit based on the duration of your fire and the size of your pit. It's better to have more than you need than run out in the middle of an event.
Storage Accessories: Firewood racks and covers can help protect your firewood from the elements, ensuring it remains dry and ready to use.
By choosing the right type of firewood and following safety guidelines, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable outdoor fire pit experience. It's important to be responsible and considerate of your surroundings and neighbors while using your fire pit.

User questions & answers
Question: | How long will these burn |
Answer: | Yes, there are screens on the cut outs. My friends and I sit around the pit and prop our feet up on the rail/ring. No danger in sight. Enjoy!! |
Question: | Will this wood fit a 28” outside wood burning pit |
Answer: | I live in the San Juans and purchased one of these from Hayneedle.com last December 2014. As of today - 9 months later - the bottom is okay but the side-walls are totally rusted-out... Kaput! We used it about once a week. The wire mesh covering the decorative cutouts has returned to iron ore! Since we paid nearly $200 for the unit it cost it about $20 a month or $5.00 per usage. Not a good investment. |
Question: | Does anyone know how long these last for a campfire |
Answer: | Hello,Thank you for the question. The fire pit itself is 23 inches tall, and the bowl is 10.5 inches deep.Thanks. |
Question: | What are the average length of these firewood |
Answer: | It's actually 35 1/2" inside the bowl and 43" to the outside of the outer ring. So not exactly 36" on the inside. hope this helps. |
Product description
This fire pit is constructed of steel which is susceptible to rust with exposure to outdoor conditions and fire. The unique design of this fire pit can generate heat in the burn chamber that can exceed 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. While we paint our fire pits with high temperature heat resistant paint, there are no commercially available paints suitable to meet these extremes. With use and time, these fire pits will show signs of rust, this will not impact the performance of the fire pit. The paint can be touched up with high-temperature paint – used on BBQ grills and other high heat appliances and can be found at most hardware stores. The bottom for the fire grate in this fire pit is stitch welded into place to allow the fire grate to flex, which is required due to the high temperatures generated in the burn chamber. The flex can cause the fire grate to look wavy, this is normal and will not affect the performance of the fire pit.
- Black powder-coated paint is rated for exposure to high temperatures
- High-efficiency design burns wood pellets or firewood with little smoke, sparks or ash
- Generates significant heat for camping, tailgating or a backyard fire
- Easy to assemble, use, carry, clean and store
- Reduces to 15.76" Dia x 7" H (40 cm Dia x 17.78 cm H) when not in use
