11 best water pump for pool gardens

A water pump for pool gardens, often referred to as a pond pump or fountain pump, is an essential component in maintaining a healthy and aesthetically pleasing water feature in outdoor spaces like gardens and ponds. These pumps play a crucial role in circulating water, adding oxygen, and keeping the water clean and clear.

Here are some key points about water pumps for pool gardens:

  1. Circulation: Pool garden water pumps circulate water in a pond, pool, or other water features. This circulation is essential for preventing stagnant water, which can become a breeding ground for algae and pests.

  2. Filtration: Many water pumps come with built-in filters or can be used in conjunction with external filters. These filters help remove debris, leaves, and other particles from the water, improving its quality and clarity.

  3. Aeration: Proper water circulation and aeration are crucial for maintaining healthy aquatic life in ponds and water gardens. Oxygenating the water is essential for fish and other aquatic creatures.

  4. Fountains and Waterfalls: Water pumps are often used to create stunning visual effects like fountains and waterfalls. They can be paired with various fountain nozzles and waterfall attachments to enhance the beauty of the garden or pond.

  5. Submersible vs. External: Water pumps can be either submersible (placed directly in the water) or external (located outside the water). The choice depends on the specific requirements of your garden or pond.

  6. Flow Rate: The flow rate of a water pump is typically measured in gallons per hour (GPH) or liters per hour (LPH). It's crucial to select a pump with the right flow rate for your water feature's size and the desired water movement.

  7. Energy Efficiency: Energy-efficient pumps are designed to minimize electricity consumption while maintaining adequate water circulation. Look for pumps with energy-saving features to reduce operating costs.

  8. Maintenance: Regular maintenance of your water pump is essential to ensure its longevity and efficiency. This includes cleaning the pump and filter, checking for clogs, and replacing any worn-out parts as needed.

  9. Safety: Ensure that the pump you choose is safe for use in outdoor settings and meets electrical safety standards. Proper grounding and waterproofing are essential to prevent accidents.

  10. Installation: Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for installation and placement of the pump. Consider using protective cages or covers to prevent damage from debris or wildlife.

  11. Sizing: To determine the right pump size for your garden or pond, consider the volume of water, the height and length of any water features, and the desired flow rate.

  12. Warranty: Check the warranty provided by the manufacturer, as it can vary from product to product. A good warranty can provide peace of mind in case of any issues with the pump.

In summary, a water pump for pool gardens is a crucial component for maintaining the health and beauty of outdoor water features. It helps with water circulation, filtration, aeration, and the creation of attractive visual effects like fountains and waterfalls. Choosing the right pump size and type, along with proper maintenance, ensures a vibrant and inviting outdoor space.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the PSI or max head (pumping vertical height) of this pump
Answer: A quick Google search of "Superior Pump 91250" yields the manufacturers specs. I do not see PSI listed but "Pumps will lift water up to 25' of vertical height" I belive answers your question...there is a chart on the "Performance" tab that shows 30 GPM at 0' lift and 2 GPM at 25' lift...with flow rates every 5' listed.http://superiorpump.com/products/utility/91250.html
Question: Does it have an automatic shut off
Answer: The pump does not have an automatic shut off. I added a float switch because I wanted it to pump out a sink that had a slow-running clogged drain where I had the washing machine. When the sink was mostly pumped out the float switch turned off the pump. It worked great for a couple years until I got around to dealing with snaking the drain which didn't have an easy clean-out. This is a good pump, since the sink drain got taken care of, we've been using the pump to pump koi pond water over a 5' fence to our neighbor's garden using about 150' of garden hose. The pump runs continuously for 5+ hours without issues in this process.
Question: Will clothes washer hoses fit on this pump
Answer: The pump itself fits a garden hose nicely. You can buy the attachment package listed next to it for the converter piece. It only came to around $8.00. It also comes with a larger hose. I didn't need it for my spa but if you need to empty a washer or bigger pool it seems like it would come in handy. Hope that helps. Good luck. :-)
Question: Can this be user to flush a tankless heater with vinigar
Answer: I bought the pump for this very reason. I'm not sure if it is rated to handle vinegar, but at the price I figured I'd try it and see. I have two tankless water heaters, and I wanted a pump that could clean out both at the same time and this pump certainly does the job. I have a hose that runs from the pump, into a splitter. From the splitter I have two hoses going to each water heater (one hose per water heater). Even pushing water through two hoses, it still has a strong flow, with each hose pushing about the same flow as the water hose faucet outside your house opened wide open (guestimate). The splitter I have allows me to adjust the flow rate by closing off some valves if it is too strong. For just one water heater, i would think this pump is too strong (as it REALLY moves water), but I'm not a plumber so I couldn't say for sure. If I were to do it again, I think I would have purchased the 1/4 HP pump, or even the 1/5HP for cleaning out water heaters with vinegar. I cleaned out my water heater this week for the first time using this pump. I let it run for 2 hrs, and I noticed that it got warm (about the temp of a warm-to-hot bath). I'm not sure if that is normal, but thought I'd let you know.

  • Shaft Seal: Nitrile

Little Giant APCP-1700 (577301) is a 115-Volt Automatic Pool Cover Pump with a low energy consumption, permanent-split capacitor (PSC) 1/3HP motor. It has Screened Intake, 1 in. FNPT Discharge, Glass-filled polypropylene Housing and 25 in. power cord. The APCP-1700 model activates in approximately 2 in. of water and deactivates in approximately 1.5 in. of water. The APCP-1700 has a wide base design for needed stability. Intermittent Liquid Temperature is up to 120 degree F. Little Giant APCP-1700 is ideal for removing water from all types of pool covers. The 1700 GPH performance was obtained through a 1 in. I.D. tube, with friction losses neglected. Using a 3/4 in. garden hose 50 foot long reduces this performance to approximately 500 gallons per hour due to friction losses in the hose. If your area frequently has heavy rain falls, (1 in. - 2 in. per hour), it may be necessary to use 1 in. tubing. This should be available in most pool supply stores.

User questions & answers

Question: DO you think could be used as an auxiliary bilge pump on an 18 foot boat sitting in a wet slip in case the 12volt system pump stops working
Answer: That is a great idea. I've got a leaky 26' skiff that may be a candidate for an aux. pump, if it will fit through the hatch opening into my bilge. The wide base may be a problem but it's perfect for a pool cover.
Question: Can it be used in Norway (230v
Answer: Check with mfr, they also make a 230V 50HZ CE version
Question: I have a good bit of leaves in the fall that gets on my pool cover. Will this get clogged up fairly easy and not pump good
Answer: I have a large tree near my pool and leaves frequently fall onto the cover. Clogging has not been a problem for me. It wont suck them up into the hose but they seem to collect around the bottom of the pump.
Question: How to remove the motor on acpc1700 little giant
Answer: My husband says that the motor is not meant to be removed since it's made to be watertight.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it automatic
Answer: no it is not automatic.
Question: Does it go on automatically for just standing water? Can it go on within a 1/4 of an inch automatically with standing water
Answer: There is a float inside the housing that turns on the pump when the water level raises it..water is drained to 1/8th inch on pool cover
Question: What is the overall length and width or diameter on the very bottom? Also, is this automatic that it can be plugged in all the time
Answer: Don't know the size but it is not automatic and clogs easily
Question: can it be used for in ground pools
Answer: I don't believe this is a product you want to leave underwater entirely for too long... it works good for getting the water out of my boat fish boxes when needed and is not an automatic process (turns on when you plug it in and turns off when you unplug it), but if you need to use it here and there for your pool, you should be fine.

User questions & answers

Question: I’m pumping out ground water under our in-ground trampoline. It’s no where near pumping 1200gph. Any idea why
Answer: It's 1200gph measured at the discharge port of the pump, but that number drops significantly depending on the length of the hose. The longer the hose, the lower the gph.
Question: Is this pump sensitive to temperature and if so what is the safe temp range of water to flow through it
Answer: I used it to pump out water in my in ground swimming pool this winter. The water temp was just above freezing and the pump worked great.
Question: If left plugged in amd sitting on the basement floor will it automatically start pumping when it senses water over 1/16" deep
Answer: I don't know if it is automatic or not, but the way we do it is 1) set it in the water with the hose hooked up and 2) plug it. Because the seats have a dent in the hot tub it is hard for it to pump the water but it does get pretty much all of it. It is an amazing pump.
Question: Is this pump fairly quiet
Answer: Very as it stopped working the first time I used it. On way back.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the PSI of this pump? ...Or what height does it pump up water? I don't see that spec
Answer: I have re-read the documentation that accompanies the pump and nowhere does it state PSI or head (height) capability. My experience with draining a 500 gallon holding tank: discharge is not high pressure, less than a hose connected to the house; it will pump at least an 8' head. The pump did not deliver 2500 gph.
Question: Anyone use this for dirty water and how did it handle it? Did the debris pass thorough or clog it
Answer: The first thing is what you mean by "dirty", that's the problem. I have used this pump for very dirty water full of leaves, branches, and muck and it definitely clogs without the modifications I describe following. The main thing that restricts what passes through this pump is the size on the intake port on the bottom of the pump which is only a little over an inch. The port has to be kept small to maintain the vortex inside the lower bell of the pump. It is the vortex that moves the water, not the impeller like other pumps! This means that if you have a lot of small particles, it is possible for a clog to occur at the elbow at the output port shown in the picture. More likely, however, the clog will occur at the smaller intake port. Generally speaking, anything that can make it through the intake port will exit if there is not some restriction at the output port. This means, for maximum dirty water flow, you have to do two things. First, swap out the provided elbow meant for connecting a garden hose, and attach a system of standard 1 1/4" pvc pipe from your local hardware store. If you want to connect to a hose, use an adapter at the end of the pvc pipe (or better yet, use a flexible large diameter discharge hose sold on Amazon). The second thing you need to do is prevent objects larger than the intake port on the bottom of the pipe from trying to enter the pump (such as leaves, etc.) To do this, place a metal 1/4" or 1/2" metal screen across the bottom of the pump held in place with duct tape. Then, ideally, place a couple of 1/2" or so stick at the bottom to prevent the pump from sitting on the bottom of whatever you are pumping out. If you do both these thing, this pump is fantastic and can move a lot of water at impressive pressure for an immersible pump of it's size! Worse case, the attached bottom screen will clog and then you just have to lift the pump and sweep your hand across the bottom to remove the debris. If not do not do both of things I have mentioned, it will clog very easily due to the small intake port and if you use the restrictive elbow provided! I have used many different kinds of pumps of all types and this is best consumer type dirty water pump I have used but you need to make the modifications that I have mentioned which are very simple and cheap. I can try and post a picture of my modifications.
Question: Do I need a garden hose attachment or does it come with one ? Also, if there isn't a float, what kind and where do I get one? Thanks
Answer: It comes with 3/4-inch adjustable discharge adapter and connects to garden hoses. I unscrewed the 3/4 " adapter to fasten a pvc adapter on my pump so I was able to use 1 1/4 " corogated plastic hose when pumping water off my pool cover. It works faster with the larger plastic hose. Sorry I do not have any info about floats.
Question: What is the lift
Answer: Lift is how far ABOVE the pump it will pump liquid. example: 10 ft. lift means it will pump liquid 10 ft. above the level of the pump. Normally the higher the lift, the lower amount it will pump.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it be used to transfer waste oil from one container to another container, several feet away
Answer: I don't see why not unless you plan to use it again for any other liquids especially clean water. Oh, but if the oil has a high level of viscosity then I wouldn't count on it serving you well.
Question: I attached this pump (brand new) to two different drills but the drill won't turn, it's as if the internals of the pump are locked. What should I do
Answer: The reviews for this pump have varied from positive to negative, Mine is positive. First look for the directional arrows on the pump body, on mine they are on the outer flange of the black housing and indicate rotation in a clockwise direction. The pump must be operated in that direction. Next Id recommend screwing the pump to a piece of 2X4 or a piece of 3/4" plywood because the reaction to turning the pump can make the whole unit try to spin. This makes everything safer. Finally make sure the drill youre using has enough torque to handle the pump. The Dewalt cordless I first used would turn the pump but did not pump very fast. Jumping up to a Dewalt 1/2" commercial type drill tripled the pumping rate. It may help also to spray/squirt some water into the intake and discharge opening to "prelube" the vanes. If these steps fail then you need to follow the appropriate return procedures. I hope this is of some help. Rogn
Question: I will be pumping water from a crawl space with a 3 foot lift and about a 15 foot hose. Would this pump be able to handle this
Answer: Almost certainly. It depends where you put the pump and how strong the hose is. You see you never really pull water, you simply create room for other force to push. Also if the hose is weak it will collapse under the pressure permitted by creating a vacuum inside. Assuming a weak hose your best bet is to put hoses on either end and keep the pump itself as close to the surface of the water as possible so that the majority of water movement action is a pushing action. This type of pump is a Rotary vane pump. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_vane_pumpFor more information: http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/eng99/eng99574.htmAlso: To move a massive amount of water your best bet is to use a large hose and create a siphon. Water will not siphon through this pump but that can be an asset. (get a garden hose quick release to make this easier) Take the hose to the water source coiled, drop one end in the water and attach the other end to the drill pump. Run it till the hose is full of water and now take the drill pump end somewhere lower than the body of water and then detach the drill pump. Bingo siphon started. But if you've got a fairly decent hose, and a reliable strong drill, this should be enough, but your mileage may vary and the weak point may not be the pump.
Question: Can this pump concrete
Answer: Once you get a good slime like substance thru it, it pumps about 100yds and hour, highly recommend for pumping full trucks of concrete. Make sure you get at least 2% calcium and hot water even if it’s 90 outside. Also since it pumps so fast, make sure you have at least 50yds on site waiting on you.

User questions & answers

Question: Besides the pump, what else do we need to buy to make the pump work? Please include the sizes of anything you mention
Answer: Depends on what you're doing with it. I use my Wayne PLS100 to pump water out of four connected rain barrels up to my back yard (probably about 15 feet vertical and about 50 yards horizontal). Does a great job. I use 1" schedule 40 PVC pipe. You need 1" male NPT adapters for your pvc pipe to screw into the female inlet and outlet of this pump. Use rigid pipe on the intake, as recommended by specs, as the pump is quite powerful and will collapse a flexible intake hose. I don't know why they call this pump portable. It seems more suited to a permanent installation (like mine). Still works after 4 years, but of course, I drain it when it gets cold, and I make sure it's primed before running it. I used a foot valve on the intake (which is inserted into 1 of four connected rain barrels), which ensures the pump is always primed. I highly recommend a foot valve for the intake. If you're using 1" pvc, you would need another 1" male npt thread adapter, as most foot valves have female npt thread. On the output I simply have two 3/4" hose bib connectors for 1" pvc pipe, and I use standard hose bibs for connecting up to two garden hoses.I hope this helps.
Question: We have about 60 psi from our source. Not enough for 4 sprinklers. What psi will this boost source pressure to
Answer: I suspect the problem was not at 60 psi. You probably needed a pump with more GPM gallon per minute. In simple term, this pump gives you enough psi m but not enough volume of water. Maybe you need cut down to 2 to 3 sprinklers at a time.
Question: Need to water trees 600ft away from home's city water outlet using 5/8 hose with this unit 100ft from source. Will it work with decent gpm at the end
Answer: 600 feet is a lot but if there's no head (rise from source) it should work. There are instructions included that show how to install the pump as a pressure booster to a city supply line. The problem you may find is that the pump pulls harder than the supply can provide water and you might collapse the hose on the supply side. If you install the pump at the source and let the pump push it the whole way that might work better. I push water up 6 feet and then push it 150 feet and get 8gpm. I'm on my second pump and the newer models are a little better.
Question: The description says the debris strainer is internally built. How do you remove the debris to prevent it from clogging
Answer: Unless they have modified the design, there is no internal debris strainer. You need a foot valve on the intake hose to do the straining.

User questions & answers

Question: we prefer to use the tube to make a waterfall (not a fountain). Is that possible with this unit
Answer: this unit is very powerful - in my opinion, it has enough output to handle a waterfall. make sure you have extra filters on hand or make sure you regularly clean the filter that comes with the unit - it prevents a world of gunk from clogging the impellers inside the pump, especially if you have fish.
Question: Our pond is 3 feet deep. If I bought extra extension tubes, is the pump powerful enough to push the water over 4 feet to make a fountain
Answer: my pond is 2 ft deep, and it works well in my pond, but I'm planning on making mine deeper to 3 ft next month, I would think it would be fine but I'm not 100% sure.
Question: can power cord be removed
Answer: No the power cord as I view it cannot be removed.
Question: With the 2 extension tubes attached to the pump how deep of water can the pump be placed in
Answer: Here is an update on the pump.. I purchased a bigger pump that does 1350 gpm at Harbor Freight it is on sale for 59.00 and is 1/6 hp. I needed something stronger for my water fall tubes which is a total of 6. I may use this pump just a fountain feature. Its a good pump, but for my application, I needed something a little more powerful.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it have an automatic turn on/off float switch
Answer: No. Part #25994310 does not need to be flashed.
Question: In spring our 2 floor drains back up and flood the basement. Can I set this pump on top of the drains to catch the water as it's coming up
Answer: It runs on 12 volts and the power lead has to be fused (1 amp) close to the voltage source, as you would an amp . Actually, you can connect it to the battery as you would an amp. It also needs to be grounded.
Question: Can I use a pool vacuum hose with this? Is a garden hose the only thing to attach for outflow
Answer: Definitely. I plan on purchasing the JLAudio Twik 86.
Question: How high or how many feet of garden hose can this pump push
Answer: This unit is specifically designed to work with factory audio. Factory radios use crossovers to make the system have less bass or higher highs. This device is designed to return the sound to the normal levels that after market radios already offer. Therefore, It is not necessary with aftermarket head units.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a 13ft x 2 ft circular fountain and am looking to run tubing through a water feature up 6 ft with a bell fountain head - would this work
Answer: I use this pump to circulate water from a bottom pond (2000 gallons) to a top pond (900 gallons) for a waterfall. The water is pushed through 30 feet of 1.5 inch tubing up an incline of 5 feet. This pump circulates our water volume very well.
Question: Does this have a threaded intake to allow connection of solid PVC pipe
Answer: hello....I am presently far away from the pump (Az) in Europe and will not return back to Az before the end of August...sorry! Yet, I seem to recall that it did not have a threaded intake and I hooked it up to the PVC pipe with a short flex and clamps....hope it helps! I believe you meant "outtake" and not "intake" since the "intake" (where it "takes" the water in) is located underneath the pump itself, no hose, no pipe?
Question: CAN YOU USE ONE INCH TUBING
Answer: You can use any size tubing with the proper adapters however one must remember that using a small diameter tubing will increase the resistance and turbulence through the tube thus greatly reducing its flow capacity (its a logarithmic function). These types of pumps can handle high resistance on the output side however not at the input end so hopefully you are only referring to choking down the output and are willing to sacrifice the huge drop in flow as a result (note: expect a large pressure increase, similar to putting your thumb over the end of a water hose).
Question: I'm confused. it's listed as a 3100gph but on the website it says maximum flow rate of 1100gph. which is it
Answer: Hi Steve, the gph of any pump depends on the head pressure working against it. The Cyclone PAL3100 pumps 3100 gph at zero head. It pumps 2,251 gph at 5' of head, 1390 at 10' of head and 479 gph at 15' of head (according to the manufacturers literature). Head is roughly calculated by adding three things together, 1' of head for every foot of height from the surface of the pond to the highest point that the water will be pumped (if you could measure it straight up), another 1' of head for every 10' of tubing length, and another 1' for every sharp turn or obstacle like a UV unit or a 90 degree elbow).
