12 best pond heaters for outdoor ponds
Pond heaters, also known as pond de-icers, are essential devices for maintaining the health and safety of outdoor ponds during cold weather. Here's what you need to know about pond heaters:
Purpose: Pond heaters are designed to prevent the surface of an outdoor pond from freezing completely during winter months. This helps maintain an opening in the ice, allowing gases to escape and oxygen to enter the water, which is crucial for the survival of aquatic life in the pond.
Floating Design: Most pond heaters are designed to float on the surface of the water. They are typically made of durable materials that can withstand outdoor conditions.
Heating Element: Pond heaters contain a heating element that warms the water around them, preventing the formation of a solid ice layer. Some heaters use electric heating elements, while others use propane or natural gas as a heat source.
Thermostat Control: Many pond heaters come with thermostatic controls, allowing you to set a specific temperature at which the heater will activate. This helps conserve energy and ensures that the pond remains ice-free but not excessively warm.
Safety Features: Safety is a priority with pond heaters. They often have features like automatic shut-off in case of overheating or if the unit is accidentally removed from the water.
Cord Length: Consider the length of the power cord when choosing a pond heater. Ensure that it can reach a nearby power source safely.
Energy Efficiency: Some pond heaters are designed to be energy-efficient, which can help save on operating costs over time.
Compatibility: Pond heaters are suitable for various types of outdoor ponds, including garden ponds, koi ponds, and fish ponds. Be sure to choose a heater appropriate for the size of your pond.
Winter Fish Care: Pond heaters are especially important if you have fish in your outdoor pond. They help create a habitable environment for fish throughout the winter, preventing stress and potential harm caused by freezing water.
Installation: Installing a pond heater is usually straightforward. You simply place it on the water's surface and plug it into a power source. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific heater you purchase.
Maintenance: Regularly inspect and clean your pond heater to ensure it functions correctly. Remove any debris that may accumulate on the heating element.
Pond heaters are essential for maintaining a healthy outdoor pond ecosystem during winter. They help prevent the formation of ice dams, which can damage pond liners and harm aquatic life. By keeping a portion of the pond ice-free, these devices contribute to the overall well-being of your pond and its inhabitants.

Question: | I have a small pumphouse...pump not below frostline...is set in the hole will it keep area from freezing |
Answer: | The Farm Innovators Floating Pond De Icer is designed to keep your decorative water garden free of potentially harmful surface forming ice in cold climates. A virtually indestructible cast aluminum body houses the powerful 1,250 watt heating element which quickly opens a hole in the surface of your pond allowing harmful gases to escape. The Farm Innovators Floating Pond Deicer is thermostatically controlled and turns on only when temperatures drop below 35°F. The Farm Innovators Floating Pond De-Icer comes with a 10' power cord and is safe for rubber and plastic liners. |
Question: | does it float |
Answer: | The bottom of the heater gets hot however it does not sit fully flat due to the power cable entering thru the bottom. If your crock does not have water in it and the temp goes below 35 degress it will remain on so keep that in consideration. It gets hot enough that it does melt ice. However depending on the width and depth of your crock it may not unfreeze it now or keep it totally unfrozen. I have it at the edge of my pond which is about 6 inches deep and right now with the below zero weather we have been having it is keeping a hole about 1 foot in diameter. Warmer temps in the 20's or so it keeps a larger area unfrozen. |
Question: | The ice has already frozen. Can I put the rock on the ice while plugged in and wait for it to melt though |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I have a fish pond, some 500 gal, with mollies, goldfish and pictus catfish. Can the thermostat setting be chg'd to come on, at say 40 deg |
Answer: | Yes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I live in zone 5. I have a 100 gallon pond which is 18" at it's deepest point. Will this product keep it from freezing solid |
Answer: | Yes, both the inner and outer sections are on swivels. |
Question: | What wattage should i buy for a old corner bath tub im using as a duck pond? It's 19in deep. I don't know how many gallons. I live in a zone |
Answer: | Each of the fins attaches to the pole with a set-screw and then when all the fins are attached it sits on the sealed bearing, which makes all the fins spin together, it is very well made and moves easily in the wind, but needs to be in a slightly windy area. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can i use this in zone seven with a 50 gallon outdoor plasic gold fish pond? Should i keep my pump working to for circulation? Thanks |
Answer: | Make sure the spinner is level. If you have used a lubricant in the past, dirt and grime may have built up. I suggest to take the spinner apart and clean out the ball bearings with something like WD-40 and leave it at that. |
Question: | I have a very small outdoor goldfish pond/small fountain. Only about 15 gallons and only about 13" deep. Will this work and be safe for the fish |
Answer: | It is top heavy for stand wobbles in high wind. The copper is terrible it spots in rain and has to be cleaned if you want the shine. I am very disappointed for the price. I should not have any worries at this price. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this cord have a two- or three-prong plug |
Answer: | This item is only 100 watts and only 'turns on' when temperatures are around 32 degrees. Its operating cost would be minimal. |
Question: | Can you us an extension cord with this? My pond is not that close to the house |
Answer: | We have a pond that is around 800 gallon. It works in ours. This heater is only made to keep a hole in the ice so all the gasses from decaying stuff under the ice don't kill the fish. Hope this helps. Richard |
Question: | How do you turn it on |
Answer: | Although I have not measured it, I'd guess it is at least 10 feet. Very long, but it tends to "remember" the coil shape. I put rocks on the cord to keep it from pulling the unit towards shore. I would highly recommend this product for keeping a hole in the ice over the winter. I've bought 2 in the last 7 years and the only reason for the second one was that I dropped the first one and cracked it, rendering it useless. I've also discovered that when the temps get close to or fall below zero, placing a black plastic tarp over the unit will help keep it from freezing up. I have seen it melt and maintain a hole through 6-9 inches of ice. Another thing to remember that once the ice forms and you place it, future snow falls will encase the cord in ice and you will not be able to move it. Allow additional cord so it cal maintain contact with the water. |
Question: | Is it 120 watts or 12 watts? what does "12 watts of heating power" mean |
Answer: | The unit is a de-icer. Is your pond cover with ice? This is my second unit, the first one lasted 10 years with no problems. I have a Koi pond that is 3,000 gallons and 4 foot deep in the center and the pond with this cold weather is covered with ice 12 inches thick. If your pond is ice covered they suggest you drill a hole thru the ice and place the unit over the hole, it will eventually melt the ice surrounding it, just as mine did. My unit keeps a hole in the 12 inch ice as big as the entire unit. Again this is not a pond heater, it is used to keep an open hole in the ice so the gases that are harmful to the fish can escape. The unit doesn't make any noise and it only gets warm on the bottom when the thermostat calls for heat. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Any idea what code e3 is |
Answer: | Maybe I don’t understand, but our temps have dropped to 14 degrees and it’s still pumping. To me the only way the tubes can freeze is if water is getting inside the lines I suppose if you turn off the pump and the water went in the lines it could then freeze. Chech the check valves are working. |
Question: | Can it be used for an outdoor pond |
Answer: | Any added oxygen is beneficial to any body of water. I have customers using this in 300 plastic tub ponds as well as others in 20,000+ ponds. It comes down to what you are using it for. Aeration, winter Ice control, aesthetics, etc. If you have dead areas in your pond with no circulation, then this aeration is perfect. If you have a stagnant body of water that is 1/4 acre, and think this aerator will keep the pond alive, then you will be very upset. |
Question: | is this weather resistant? rain....cold weather etc |
Answer: | As others have suggested here, you'll need to keep it covered with anything that will protect the air pump from the elements. It's advisable keep it from direct contact with the ground as well. There are a variety of ways to do this, including decorative faux rock covers with air vents designed specifically to cover air pumps. |
Question: | Is this over kill for a 75 gallon discus tank. i like to keep them at 86. the reason i ask is because i have 2 300’s it’s not working thanks |
Answer: | According to the instruction book it comes with two 25' lengths of tubing. My husband put this in, so I have to refer to the booklet. It seems the stones are about 4" across. Mine are buried in rock now so can't see them. Maybe someone else can be more specific. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the average monthly cost to run this heater? I have heard that 1,500 watt heaters can cost up to 75$ a month to run |
Answer: | How much of an area it will keep open depends on the size of the pond and the outside temperature. It's purpose is to keep a hole in the surface, for gas exchange. I've used it in a very large pond and found it kept a sizable area open though, unless extremely cold temps last for days. |
Question: | Our pond is only 55 gal. Is this heater ok to use? Or do you know a model that would work |
Answer: | Thanks for asking! Yes, this product floats. For more help contact TetraPond at [email protected]. We are happy to help! |
Question: | How long is the power cord |
Answer: | No. I have had customers try this. It does not work. Boil some water on the stove and pour onto the ice until you melt a hole to float the heater in. |
Question: | I just bought this and had it in my pond for a day & noticed no change. How do I know if its working? It makes no noise & doesn't seem to get warm |
Answer: | As the customers stated, no, you cannot set this like a heater. Your mollies and pictus cannot be housed outdoors over winter, although the goldfish can be. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this actually work and is it well on your electric bill |
Answer: | No. You hook it into one you already have. |
Question: | Have a 38" x 14" deep 35 gallon preformed plastic circular pond with frogs that showed up this summer still in it. Will this be too big/hot |
Answer: | My pond is 1000 gallons in Wisconsin and it keeps it warm enough to keep the koi in all winter |
Question: | Can I use this in a hot tub until the repair man can put in a new heater? Will it harm the fiberglass bottom |
Answer: | Yes, too big. We bought this and used last winter in our 2000 gallon koi pond and it worked well, keeping one end of the pond from freezing and an opening about 3 foot in diameter around the heater. My guess is that your estimation of 50 gallons is low (even for a small pond) but even if 100 gallons, you will probably overheat and kill your fish. Reference: 50 gallons is only about 6.7 cubic feet (a large indoor aquarium). |
Question: | How do I know if the unit is on? I have it in the pond and it doesn't even feel warm. Does it turn on at a certain temperature |
Answer: | From the Lagunapond website: "The light is red when the unit is warming up. Once the de-icer reaches its pre-set temperature, the light will switch to green. If the unit needs to heat up again due to a change in water temperature, the red light will come back on." |

Question: | How large is opening around de-icer?My 8,000 gal pond is all frozen except 3"opening only on one side of de-icer. Thought it would melt all around it |
Answer: | We have about a 1,000 gallon decorative pond and all the ice is melted from the de-icer. |
Question: | Should I always keep it plugged in? It consumes a lot of electricity and I wonder whether to turn it on only when the temperature is below freezing |
Answer: | It has a built in thermostat that turns it on when the water temp is below 45f, however that may mean it is on often depending on your winter temps, so I would unplug it when temps are above freezing. You can also buy a temp controlled plug to plug it into, which then plugs into the outlet, and you can buy one that turns on at 30f or 20f etc. |
Question: | Is it safe for turtles |
Answer: | It is safe for large Koi, but we have no turtles |

Product description
Large, low-profile pond de-icer resists tipping against blustery winter winds. The unique design of the Pond Saucer minimizes heat loss due to frigid winds for reliable performance. Maintains a vent hole in the ice to ensure proper gas exchange throughout the winter. Thermostatically-controlled de-icer operates only when necessary for reliable energy-efficient performance Gª( turns on automatically at 35-¬F and turns off when the water temperature is at 45-¬F. Made from easy-to-clean, weather resistant thermoplastic material. 200 watts. 12-1/2" diameter and only 1-3/4" high. 10 ft power cord.
- Installation: The de-icer should be placed at the northwest corner of the pond, up against the liner. In large or deep ponds, place unit in the shallowest part of the pond, preferably near a bank. The unit will turn on automatically when the temperature around the heating element is at 35-¬F and turns off when the water temperature is at 45-¬F (at -10-¬F air temperature).
- Air Test: Perform an "Air Test" to determine whether the de-icer is heating properly and the thermostat is functioning properly.
- Place the unplugged de-icer into the freezer for 30 to 45 minutes to activate the thermostat.
- Remove the de-icer from the freezer and quickly plug the de-icer into a working outlet.
- The unit will heat up and then shut off, indicated by a slight clicking sound. The clicking sound means the thermostat is working properly.
User questions & answers
Question: | how long is the power cord |
Answer: | Yes. You only need to keep a hole open in the event that the pond freezes, you are not going to heat all the pond water. |
Question: | Is this the correct size for a 50 gallon pond |
Answer: | Three years as stated on box. |
Question: | Is the “slight clicking sound” more like a loud pop? Something in our yard is making that sound occasionally from the backyard - just want to be sure |
Answer: | it helps to keep an opening in the frozen water so that toxic gases can escape. |
Question: | Can this work for a 2000 gallons |
Answer: | I never noted it, but can estimate it for you. The US average electrical rate is $0.12 per kilowatt hour. Running this heater 24/7 would cost approximately $30/month to operate. FYI, i pyrchased this heater specific all due to its low cost to operate compared to other higher wattage heaters. One caution though, if you have Koi, you still need to run a aerator, I learned the this lesson the hard way. |
