12 best heated bird baths

Heated bird baths are a popular addition to outdoor spaces, particularly during the colder months, to provide fresh water for birds and other wildlife. These bird baths are designed to prevent the water from freezing, ensuring that birds have access to clean water even in freezing temperatures. Here are some key points about heated bird baths and their related categories:

  1. Purpose: The primary purpose of a heated bird bath is to keep the water temperature above freezing, typically around 40 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit (4 to 7 degrees Celsius), to prevent it from turning into ice.

  2. Components: Heated bird baths usually consist of a basin or bowl, a heating element, and a cord for plugging into an electrical outlet. Some models are solar-powered, using energy from the sun to keep the water warm.

  3. Types: There are various types of heated bird baths, including standalone models, ones that can be mounted on a pedestal or hung from a branch, and even heated inserts that can be added to existing bird baths.

  4. Benefits:

    • Year-round bird attraction: Heated bird baths ensure that birds have access to water even in winter, attracting a wider variety of bird species to your garden.
    • Prevent freezing: They help prevent the water from freezing, ensuring that birds and other wildlife can stay hydrated, which is crucial during cold weather when natural water sources may freeze over.
    • Easy maintenance: Heated bird baths are relatively easy to maintain. You'll need to clean them regularly to prevent algae growth and mineral buildup.
  5. Pond De-Icer: Pond de-icers are similar to heated bird baths but are designed for larger bodies of water, such as ponds. They typically consist of a heating element that floats on the surface of the water, creating a small opening to allow for gas exchange and prevent the water from freezing solid.

  6. Water Gardens and Ponds: Water gardens and ponds are popular landscaping features that can benefit from the use of pond de-icers in colder climates. These devices help maintain a hole in the ice, ensuring that fish and other aquatic life have access to oxygen and preventing the buildup of harmful gases.

  7. Outdoor Decor: Heated bird baths and pond de-icers can also be considered as part of outdoor decor, as they add aesthetic value to your garden or outdoor space while serving a functional purpose.

  8. Patio, Lawn, and Garden: Heated bird baths, pond de-icers, and other outdoor decor items are commonly found in the patio, lawn, and garden section of home and garden stores. They can enhance the beauty of your outdoor space and provide essential support to wildlife.

In summary, heated bird baths and related products like pond de-icers are practical additions to outdoor spaces, ensuring that birds and wildlife have access to water even in freezing conditions. They also contribute to the overall appeal of your garden or outdoor area, making them a valuable investment for nature enthusiasts.

Answer: Shallow but if you have a deep on.. just place a rock or something in yhe middle (deepest part) and this is allow them to feel safer using a deep bird bath and a extra place for them to land to get a drink of water.
Question: Do birds actually use this bird baths for garden
Answer: Not sure as I just received mine. I bought it so the birds would have something over the winter. They use our fountain now, but it will be drained for the winter. I would imagine they'll use the heated bird bath as the water shouldn't freeze.
Question: How deep is it
Answer: About 2 inches. Shallow.
Question: How do I know birdbath working
Answer: Supposedly the bird baths for garden built-in thermostat controls the heater to keep the water between 40-50 df. Maybe you probably will not notice it working until everything else is frozen and the water is not. You might check the bird baths for outdoors prime with an aquarium thermometer to see if it does maintain that temperature ran.

User questions & answers

Question: can the bowl be used without the base
Answer: yes the base has female threads to mount the mount has the male threads
Question: Where is it made
Answer: Made of China, but the heated bird bath is delivered by Amazon. Hope for you help.
Question: How long is the electric cord
Answer: Cord is about 6-8 ft long. The tray capacity is too small. In 32 degrees +/-, the water evaporates in less than a day. I like it otherwise as it is all self-contained so there is no exposed heater. If it was my cheese factory, I'd offer a premium unit also with twice the capacity and heavier grade legs to support the higher weight load and highrt price
Question: Does his plug in Or how does it heat
Answer: It plugs in to a standard outlet. The cord is short so you may need an extension cord if the heater is not placed very near the outlet

User questions & answers

Question: how does it stay upright without a stand
Answer: The first one I bought included a pedestal stand, but I stopped using it and set the birdbath in a 16" - 18" flower pot saucer on the ground. It's much easier to keep it level in the saucer because you can just wiggle it around to level and the weight of the water when it's filled keeps it from moving during normal use. I drilled a hole in the bottom of the saucer to run the plug through the bottom and plug it in to the extension cord during the winter.
Question: I have an outdoor cord and am curious what people are using to keep the cord off the snow
Answer: There are items designed to enclose the connection between an appliance cord and an extension cord. Most I've seen are called cord protectors. Most hardware and homeware stores carry and also availble on-line. Just bought one for about $4-5 in retail store. January 2019
Question: Is it possible to place this on top of my concrete bird bath? It is pretty much flat and shallow
Answer: I'm not an expert, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't work. We have had ours for one year and the birds love it. It is relatively deep, so as long as you are able to balance it in a flat and shallow bird bath, it should work.
Question: What is contained in the hardware kit? It would have been helpful if they had a picture or better description of exactly what is included in the kit
Answer: A pre-drilled metal disk, extending arms, angle bracket, bolts and nuts for mounting to: bird bath pedestal, feeder pole, wooden railings from less than 3.5" wide, to 8.75" wide, to 8.75"-12" wide, a 4" x 4" wooden post, a metal deck railing, or permanently mounting on any flat surface. I hope this helps you decide.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the height of this bird bath
Answer: From the ground to the top of the "bath", I suspect 32-34 inches. The depth of the water is only about 2 inches max. We were happy withthe product, but you need to refill it at least every other day.
Question: Is the heater situated under the holder
Answer: Hi... Here is the description I have. I believe that the heater is directly beneath the pan, if not attached directly to it. I hope this helps. Keep the bird bath fresh and clear with a heated pan. Water is a vital resource to birds in the winter. Guaranteed to provide your birds with water down to -20 degrees F. Has a 60 watt thermostatically controlled and insulated heating element enclosed and sealed. Long-lasting Western Red Cedar frame and post. The post is hollow so electric cord is out of sight. Some assembly required. Heavy-duty 14 inch bath pan, 13/8 inch deep. Triangular mounts adjustable for deck or fence. Double cedar frame is 22 inch in diameter. Comes with two anchors (hold-down stakes).
Question: some of the answers refer to the inclusion of a 'summer pan'. Since I'd be buying this for extreme cold temps, is there a 'winter pan' as well
Answer: From what I know, there is only have one pan, and it works quite well. We love this birdbath, especially in ice cold weather. It is the only liquid water available for the animals.
Question: How long is the power cord? Also, how much does it weigh (approximately)? We get some strong winds in the winter months
Answer: The power cord isn't very long. I goes through the center post. Mine is connected to an outdoor extension cord. The pan sits in a center well. It doesn't weigh very much but there are anchors for the legs. We had 40 mph gusts the other day and I had no problems with the any part of the bird bath. My only complaint about this bird bath is that the pan isn't very deep. You have to check the water level every day.

User questions & answers

Question: how short can I make the support pole
Answer: you can make it at most 12 in. Shorter
Question: I’ve had it plugged in for 20 minutes and the water is still cold
Answer: Try putting a small amount of water in, maybe 1/4". Give it 20 minutes or so, check to see if it's warming it. It does take a while to warm up. The most I fill it is 1/2 way. Any more than that and the top of the water freezes
Question: Would this be stable if i put it on my deck, not using the stakes
Answer: I bought this feeder a number of years ago to use on my deck. it kept blowing over. Since I have a railing that has a 2X6 side piece, I used a hacksaw and cut the stand about 10-12" down and attached a 6" length of appropriate PVC pipe the the side piece and simply dropped the stand into it. Has worked for years
Question: I can't put this together the instructions are very vague and I only got one screw in the package, can anyone help with instructions
Answer: Pam, I have a extra bbathon hand, still in the box. Just in case the old one dies on me. I just took it out of the box , I also have a single screw. (have no idea where it goes). The two screws that holds the legs together, should already be in the bracket, you just have to tighten them once you get the legs in the bracket. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: What minimum depth of water in a bird bath is required for safe and effective operation? i have a smallish bath that only ha about a 3/4 inch depth
Answer: I’m not sure, my bird bath is 3” deep when full, it worked fine even when the water level dropped down to less than 1/2 full from evaporation and thirsty birds. This heating element lasted 3 years before it finally quit.
Question: Hello. Is this likely to burn out (quit working) if water runs out in the birdbath? Thanks
Answer: I have never let it run dry, so I don't know from experience. However, I thought I read some reviews that said that it shuts off if there is no water in the bowl or birdbath. You might go back and take a look at the reviews.
Question: Can I use this in a 1 gallon plastic poultry waterer
Answer: We've used this in a 5 gallon plastic bucket for our chickens for several years without much issue. My only real issue is that they begin to rust & form mineral deposits after a could yrs. In all fairness, we've never removed it from the water bucket b/c we use a therm cube which automatically shuts it off, so it might last longer if removed after last frost.
Question: I have had this heater less than a year! I just ordered the plug protector and hooked it up and the heater ha a short somewhere and keeps tripping the GRFI plug, so will have to order another one. It was supposed to be guaranteed for TWO years. How do I get a replacement
Answer: I have had 3. They all trip GFCI eventually- usually after about 6 months of use. My electrician just replaced the entire barn for $4k and they still trip. The electric co has been out and say I am 100% in good shape. It’s this heater, not your electrical.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it possible to buy the stand alone
Answer: You'll have to search, but this particular one comes with the heated bath.
Question: Can I purchase the stand seperately API600 20 inch diameter
Answer: Probably not. But at least you have figured out that the stand is the only decent part of this bath.
Question: Can an outdoor extension cord be used? thks MM
Answer: The birdbath cord is really short. You will pretty much have to use an outdoor extension cord - and I add an outdoor electrical timer to turn off the heating unit during the night and re-start it in the early a.m. (see outdoor Christmas light electrical accessories...)
Question: Can I usse this withiout the stand (does the bowl have a flat bottom). I'm concerned the stand is not strong enough for gusty winds
Answer: Yes, you can use this bowl without the stand. The bowl has a flat bottom with a notch for the cord so it extends to the side rather than straight down. You should probably place some rocks, bricks, or whatever around the bottom just to be sure it holds steady and doesn't tip to one side if something heavy lands on it.

Answer: I'm not sure how much water my birdbath holds, probably about a gallon, and it is only about 3" deep. But the heater will not keep it all thawed if the temperature is really low, like zero or below. It will, however, keep it thawed several inches around the heater. In higher temperatures, like the teens or 20s, it will keep most of the water from icing over. As an aside, there are some stray cats that come to my second bird bath that I keep on the floor of the deck, and they are able to get water all winter as well. (One of them puts his front feet right on the heater to warm them - smart guy!)
