Answer:	The batteries are intended to keep the time but NOT to display the time if the clock is unplugged or if the power goes out. It is explained in the manual: "Connect a 3 volt (1.5V "AAA" size * 2pcs.) battery (not included) to the terminals inside the battery compartment. In the event of a power interruption, your set will not work normally from the mains supply but there is now the advantage that your clock will continue to work. The clock display will not light up, as the clock time will be held in the memory. This also enables you to move the set from place to place without re-setting the clock every time."

This information is not in the manual, but the manufacturer has a webpage that is helpful (but hard to find!).
