User questions & answers
Question: | Does this unit have the ability to send its data to a central weather service-- such as Weather Underground? If so, anything additionally needed |
Answer: | I believe that if there is a computer connection on the readout, the file created in your computer may be in a format that can be sent. You would have to download from the unit and see what you get and see if the weather service could use the file. There used to be local weather nets that took data from private sources. |
Question: | highest recordable wind speed |
Answer: | According to the book.2 to 180 mph2 to 156 knots1 to 80 m/s3 to 290 km/hHowever if you are in a hurricane/tornado and you get a 180MPH wind I would bet whatever supporting structure the unit was on would be somewhere down the road. |
Question: | does this have to hook up to your comp? my bro doesn't have mac |
Answer: | you don't have to hook it up to a computer but that is where most of the bars and graphs are. otherwise you do get yearly and monthly, daily amounts of rain ,wind, etc from the base unit. |
Question: | Looking to get a weather station to mount to my roof/side that is networkable and can access via phone app/web interface. recommendations |
Answer: | You can upload to WeatherLink.com and access your data on your computer or smartphone with WeatherLink mobile app. You do need a Davis data logger to do this, as well as the station. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have metered data access . will this use a lot of my data allowance. can you give me a monthly estimate |
Answer: | Yes, no estimate but you are transmitting data |
Question: | If I lose power to my router and Weatherlink will my data still be stored so that I can retrieve it later |
Answer: | This note is from the WeatherLink live user manual: Note: WeatherLink Live is powered by AC power with battery backup. AC power is required; it cannot be set up or run on batteries alone. It is highly recommended that you install batteries to prevent loss of data if AC power is lost. If AC power is lost, the WeatherLink Live will stop trying to communicate with your network, but it will continue to receive sensor data and store it. When AC power is resumed, it will reconnect with the network and send the records it stored during the outage to your database on the WeatherLink Cloud. This indicates that the Weatherlink Live has some internal memory for storing data in the event of a communications loss. The spec sheet does not say how much internal memory it contains or how much data it can store. You would need to contact Davis instruments for that information. |
Question: | Do i need the vantage vue console if i can view my weather data on my computer |
Answer: | If you are using the Davis data logger to collect data from your vantage vue to your computer then you don’t have to have the WeatherLink Live data collection hub. However, I don’t want my PC running all the time to collect the data and find it very convenient to use the WeatherLink data collection hub to feed data to WeatherLink and Weather Underground. It works great by the way. The main reason for purchasing is to feed data to the cloud without needing a PC. |
Question: | I slready own a vantage vue weather station with console. can i purchase this to connect it to the weather app while still using the console as well |
Answer: | Yes, you can, it is in effect another wireless receiver which does not require the original console at all or can operate right alongside with it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this device allow you to update the console firmware? The web site is not clear on this |
Answer: | It is a USB 2.0 Device only from my experience. Also, its a 200Mhz max sample rate with all 16 channel enabled. The less channels enabled, the faster it can sample. |
Question: | is it just the software, or data loguer is included |
Answer: | Don’t know, but GNUPlot is free and an excellent software. |
Question: | Is there a way to get the weather data into Excel? I want to make my own charts not the limited ones that come with the software |
Answer: | We provide enough memory. Not need external trigger. Internal trigger only |
Question: | Can you plug this into a raspberry pi and upload the data |
Answer: | It works amazingly well especially considering the cost. The software is somewhat basic but includes a number of decoders that you have to pay big money for on other logic analyzers. I have never once had a failure of any kind using it. Even the PWM output channels are dead on when probed on the oscilloscope. Also the probe leads are some of the best quality silicone that I have ever seen on one of these. Give it a try you will not be disappointed. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the solar radiation sensor work with a wired vantage pro 2 ? (not-wireless |
Answer: | Hi Bob, This clock works perfectly every in the world, however in North America (U.S.A. and Canada) it is unreliable. It works in California, Oregon, and Washington state, however when I traveled to Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, New York, and Ontario, Canada it failed. I would adjust the tone to the new time zone and then later during the night it would revert to Pacific Coast time. I know it is radar based, but it should then automatically adjust to the new time, and it does not. I set my alarm based on the new time and slept through it because it went off a couple hours later, when it was on Pacific time. Super frustrating. The instructions are NOT easy to follow. Good luck! |
Question: | Any arduino code |
Answer: | This clock quit working on me, so I have thrown it away, but I believe you press the bottom left button to turn off the alarm. |
Question: | Are there three lines available to connect to the wire model |
Answer: | So what is the question? |
Question: | Why is this called “wireless”? doesn’t it plug in to the iss panel with a phone like jack (with a wire |
Answer: | Yes, you can turn off the radio-controlled atomic signal to manually adjust the clock. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have solinst level logger and it is giving me erroneous value. So do u think it is battery problem |
Answer: | Call Davis instrument in Hayward ca. They will tell you how to fix |
Question: | Does the system come with a usb port or do i have to buy davis usb software? i already have virtual weather station software for data logging |
Answer: | From what I understand, you must purchase the "Davis Weatherlink software/Data Logger" ($125 from Amazon, overpriced I think). WeatherLink with standard Data Logger, is the "Davis software" and a "data connection" the connects your Davis weather station to your PC using a USB port. The data logger stores information even when your computers is turned off or not connected. It includes Davis Weather software that links your Davis weather station to your computer, but Davis software has poor reviews.I hear you can use the data logger with other, better software though.Comes with a data logger that fits in all Vantage Pro and Vue systems.User-Selectable storage interval, choose 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 or 120 minutesWeather Website, create a weather website or post weather conditions to a LAN |
Question: | This tripod stand included in the sale as well as the software to download the data |
Answer: | Those are separate purchases. I'm on my second Davis system. Easy to use and the indoor console stores data for weeks, so when I go on vacation for 3 weeks, I can come back and access all of the data from the time I was gone.I mount mine on a telescoping flag pole. Sort of an expensive alternative, but it's easy to access the parts for maintenance and put everything at the proper heights. |
Question: | I ordered batteries for the vantage pro and got non-rechargable batteries for it. Why are rechargable batteries not the defalt replacement |
Answer: | Mine came with an AC adapter for the indoor console. But they recommend running it on batteries (3 - C batteries) which are expected to last close to a year. The ISS transmitter uses an ultra-capacitor which is backed up with a lithium non-rechargeable battery. If the unit is mounted high with the panels facing south and the sun shines every day, the back up will never be used. If the unit is mounted in the shade, the battery backup is supposed to last around 8 months. They say typically the backup battery should be replaced every 2 years. If the battery backup fails, the ISS will typically still work all day and most of the time at night. Small rechargeable batteries out doors don't stand up to well below zero temperatures in winter and the heat of being in the sun in summer will greatly shorten their life. The lithium battery they recommend for backup is probably the best technology for the conditions this unit is designed for. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How ad data of davis instruments 6440 soil moisture sensor can be translated |
Answer: | It's possible to install a wired vantage pro 2 and wireless vantage pro2 |
Question: | Can I leave it in the ground over the winter ? Or do I need to take out and reinstall |
Answer: | No, no code. Just the physical item in a box with installation instruction. |
Question: | How is this unit connected into the davis vantage pro2 unit. i don't recall seeing a place to connect the wiring |
Answer: | Hello Jjack. I am not sure as to what you are asking exactly. First off I assume that your asking if this Solar Radiation sensor is able to connect to your Vantage Pro2 Weather Station (Wireless). I own this Vantage Pro2 Weather Station along with all the sensors that can be added to this unit. There are five. 1) UV 2) SUN 3) Rain 4) Wind 5) Temp/ Humidity. I am not sure what you have currently on you Weather station. I would think you have at minimum the *Rain and the *Humidity. as I believe that is what comes with the basic unit. You can add the * Solar Sensor This is the one your asking about. along with adding the *UV sensor and lastly the *anemometer to measure the wind. I hope I have answered you question. As that I had little information to go on from your question as stated. |
Question: | I hear about soaking the sensor before installing, I assume this is one time thing ? What if the ground dries all up, then rains, still accurate |
Answer: | Hi, I think you are confusing the solar radiation sensor with the Vantage Pro 2 unit. As you state, the sensor is not 'wireless' but has a cable that plugs directly into the ISS. The 'wireless' reference must be about a wireless VantagePro2. I am not sure why the description states 'for VantagePro2 (wireless)' as I understand the Solar Radiation model number 6450 is used for both cables and wireless VantagePro2. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Davis Instruments 6163 console can display metric units |
Answer: | Translated into what ? My best suggestion is to read info on soil moisture measurements (Google it) for explanations of soil moisture measuring. |
Question: | Does this unit have lightening detection and if not is there an attachment that will connect to the unit for detection |
Answer: | You can leave it in the ground all winter. |
Question: | Which models have the spikes for birds |
Answer: | The sensor does not connect directly to a Davis Vantage Pro2, it has to connect through a Davis Instruments Leaf/Soil Moisture/Temp Monitoring Station https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WBLFC4?m=ACUH2CB0BK1CG&ref_=v_sp_detail_page to be read by the console. |
Question: | how many stations can a base handle at once |
Answer: | Yes you only have to do it once. It's supposed to help it read more accurately right at first until the sensor gets "acclimated" to the soil. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this comparable with Vatage Vue #6351 model |
Answer: | Davis #6357 is the Vantage Vue sensor suite, i.e. what is on the outdoor post. Davis #6351 is the Vantage Vue receiver console, i.e. what is placed indoors to display the data. Davis #6250 is the "system" consisting of one #6357 plus one #6351. One may also choose, as I did, to purchase a Davis #6312 (Vantage Pro2) receiver console with a few extra features to go with the #6357 sensors. |
Question: | Is it already calculated and ready to go for my console |
Answer: | I think you mean calibrated - yes, provided you have the console that is compatible with it. The other two answers will also helpful to you. BTW, my neighbor about 100 yards away has the same Vantage transmitter and VUE receiver. He had to take his down when he had his roof replaced. He has not put it back up because he is getting readings from mine - LOL! |
Question: | How much does the sensor suite weight |
Answer: | The product description says the shipping weight is 4.5 pounds. I would guess the unit itself is somewhere between 2 and 3 pounds. Another answer sent to you says they have it mounted on a 3/4 inch metal pole and has withstood 66 MPH winds with no problems. |
Question: | My Davis Vantage VUE ISS needs a repair in the $100 range. Thinking of this new unit instead. Will this new unit auto-link w/ existing VV monitor |
Answer: | Depending on the nature of the repairs needed, I agree that purchase of a new unit is the best way to go. I recently had a mishap with mine while trying to take it down for maintenance which resulted in damage to the ISS which possibly could have been repaired but I don't think it would have ever regained the same level of weatherproofing as it had when it was new and pre-damage. If you purchase a new ISS, it will come with an installation manual which outlines (on page 5), the procedure for changing the Transmitter ID. However you should not have to do this since it is set to "1" by default, which is probably what your damaged ISS was set to, and also what your console is set to receive. In my case all I did was disable my damaged ISS by removing the battery and waiting for a while (there must be an internal capacitor that the solar panel charges), since even in it's damaged state it was still transmitting to the console. When I got my new ISS, it was configured for Transmitter ID "1" by default, and so my Vantage VUE console started receiving data from it right away. But again when you get the new ISS, if you find that you need or want to change the transmitter ID, you can using the procedure in the installation manual. All of these docs are also available on Davis's website in PDF form, by the way. Hope this helps and good luck! |

User questions & answers
Question: | does this work with VantagePro2 Model |
Answer: | The ISS unit (the outdoor sensors) can handle many base units/consoles -- we have one in the living room, office, and guest house. The base unit/console, however, will only read from one ISS system. Hope this makes sense. WeatherBuffs (928) 635-1088 |
Product description
The standard version of the iss contains a rain collector, temperature sensor, humidity sensor and Anemometer. In addition to the standard weather features, the iss Plus adds a pre-installed solar radiation sensor and a ultra-violet (UV) radiation sensor. Temperature and humidity sensors are mounted in a Passive radiation shield to minimize the impact of solar radiation on sensor readings. The Anemometer measures wind speed and direction and can be installed adjacent to the iss or apart from it. On an iss Plus, the additional solar and UV sensors are mounted next to the rain collector cone. Separate solar and UV sensors are available to upgrade a standard iss. The sensor interface module (SIM) contains the “brains” of the iss and the radio transmitter. The SIM is located on the front of the radiation shield in the SIM box. The SIM collects outside weather data from the iss sensors and then transmits the data to your Vantage Pro2 console, Vantage Vue console, weather envoy8x, or weather envoy which are sold separately. Available for sale in the United States and Canada only.

Question: | if you have 2 consoles and only one sensor outdoors, can it cause sensor to malfunction and not register precipitation at all |
Answer: | Hi, Timothy. My VP2 ISS is a 6152 ( I’ve never heard of a 5xxx version). It’s a 2010 model. The sensor installed and has worked perfectly since. Good luck! |
Question: | What is the range of the anemometer? I want to know the top wind speed it can measure |
Answer: | Yes you can change to metric |
Question: | Is this the current model with the updated rain collector? The picture shows the old style. Thank you |
Answer: | This unit does not have lightening detection. I believe the Davis lightening detector is a stand alone instrument. |

Question: | Can I hook up two of these indoor consoles to the same outdoor unit so I can see my data at two locations inside my house |
Answer: | Yes. You can use multiple console/receivers with a single outdoor sensor suite, as long as the consoles are within the transmitting area of the sensor suite. |
Question: | Can this console be used alone without sensor suite to collect only basic weather data say inside temperature, humidity. barometric pressure etched |
Answer: | Yes, it will work as you describe. Without the sensor suite it will still collect all inside data and barometer. Time, Sunset and Sunrise, Moon phase, and other ticker tape notifications will all still function too. |
