10 best ambient weather radio alarms

Ambient weather radio alarms are specialized weather instruments that combine the functionality of a weather radio and an alarm clock. These devices are designed to provide users with up-to-date weather information, alerts, and warnings while also serving as a traditional alarm clock. Here's what you should know about ambient weather radio alarms:

  1. Weather Radio Functionality: Ambient weather radio alarms are equipped with NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather radio receivers. These receivers can tune in to NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts, which provide real-time weather information, forecasts, and emergency alerts for a specific region.

  2. Alerts and Warnings: One of the key features of these devices is their ability to receive and broadcast weather alerts and warnings. When severe weather conditions or emergencies, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, or flash floods, are detected in your area, the weather radio function will sound an alarm and provide critical information to keep you informed and safe.

  3. Alarm Clock Features: In addition to weather-related functions, ambient weather radio alarms serve as traditional alarm clocks. They typically offer features such as multiple alarms, snooze functions, and adjustable alarm tones.

  4. Display: These devices often come with digital displays that show the time, date, and current weather conditions. Some models may also display temperature and humidity readings.

  5. Battery Backup: Many ambient weather radio alarms include battery backup capabilities. This ensures that the device can continue to function during power outages, allowing you to stay informed about weather conditions in emergencies.

  6. Multiple Channels: Some models may have the ability to receive weather information from multiple NOAA channels, which can be useful if you are located near a border area or want to monitor conditions in different regions.

  7. Portability: Some ambient weather radio alarms are designed to be portable, allowing you to take them on outdoor activities like camping or hiking. They may be powered by rechargeable batteries or solar panels.

  8. Programming and Customization: Users can often program these devices to receive alerts for specific types of weather events and locations. This customization ensures that you receive relevant information based on your preferences.

  9. External Sensors: Some advanced models may be compatible with external sensors, such as temperature and humidity sensors, to provide more detailed weather data for your location.

Ambient weather radio alarms are valuable tools for staying informed about weather conditions and ensuring your safety during severe weather events. They offer a combination of weather radio functionality and alarm clock features, making them a versatile addition to your home or for outdoor adventures. When considering a specific model, it's essential to review its features and capabilities to determine which one best suits your needs.

User questions & answers

Question: does this projection alarm clock have a electric cord or is it battery
Answer: The clock itself has an indoor sensor which displays the indoor temperature. Otherwise you can buy an additional sensor if you want temperature in another inside location. You then have to change channels to view the temperature on the second indoor/outdoor sensor.
Question: Is this clock lit with led bulbs? when they burn out, can they be replaced
Answer: Simply moving your display console (or receiver) to a different location may easily fix the communication issue. We recommend the following best practices for trouble free wireless communication. Fresh Batteries. If applicable, make sure there are fresh batteries in both the console and remote. Remember to power up the console last when changing batteries. Do not use rechargeable batteries. They have a lower voltage and lower range than non-rechargeable batteries. Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI). Keep the console several feet away from computers, TVs and electronic cables. Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). If you have other 433/915 MHz devices and communication is intermittent, try turning off these other devices for troubleshooting purposes. You may need to relocate the transmitters or receivers to avoid intermittent communication. Cold Weather. If the temperature is below < 10 degF, use e2 energizer batteries (Lithium), available in most stores batteries are sold (blue in color). Alkaline and NMH (nickel metal hydride) batteries do not operate below 10 degF. Sensor orientation. To insure proper communication, mount the remote sensor on a vertical surface, such as a wall. Do not lay the sensor flat if this is a small remote sensor. Line of Sight Rating. This device is rated at 300 feet line of sight (no interference, barriers or walls) but typically you will get 100 feet maximum under most real-world installations, which include passing through barriers or walls. Metal Barriers. Radio frequency will not pass through metal barriers such as aluminum siding. If you have metal siding, align the remote and console through a window to get a clear line of sight. Defective Sensor. It is possible the remote sensor is defective. If you have not done so already, to replace under one year warranty, please visit AmbientWeather.com/rma.html The following is a table of reception loss vs. the transmission medium. Each “wall” or obstruction decreases the transmission range by the factor shown below. Medium RF Signal Strength Reduction Glass (untreated) 5-15% Plastics 10-15% Wood 10-40% Brick 10-40% Concrete 40-80% Metal 90-100%
Question: How do I reverse the projection 180 degrees
Answer: I am sorry but they are not yet available. Sorry, the product is relatively new and we wanted to make sure there was enough interest in multiple sensors.
Question: can you turn off the projection of the temperature and just project the time
Answer: This is not really a car friendly product. It is meant for home use and requires an AC adapter.

User questions & answers

Question: With multiple sensors, which temperature is displayed or does it just cycle through them

Question: Where can you get instructions on how to set time etc. on model WS
Answer: This is compatible sensor for model 308-1412S.
Question: Do you have a clock with multiple remotes? So you can get outside temp as well as temp in greenhouse
Answer: Compatible with the following models: 308-1414B, 308-1414w, 308-1414MB, 308-1425B, 308-1425c, S87078 and S88907
Question: Does the main face of the clock turn off? So I just see the projection on the ceiling
Answer: I believe so, but unless you are using it for an indoor measurement I wouldn't consider it. This unit is "weather resistant" not "weather proof." I have been through three of them in the last three years because shifting winds in a storm soaked it. I am getting rid of the unit as a result.

User questions & answers

Question: Atomic clock will this synchronize with the time server in colorado because some people in their review had difficulties is this true? thank you
Answer: It has both. The clock itself is powered by two AA batteries. The projection light that displays the time on the ceiling or elsewhere is powered by a low voltage transformer with a cord and plug. The clock will function by itself without external power, but to see it on the ceiling you need to have the transformer and cord plugged in with AC power.
Question: What is the time interval between alarms when using the snooze function
Answer: the bulb is built in & doesn't look like it could be replaced. I think it would last the life of the weather radio.
Question: People are having issues with the time setting/adjusting automatically; why is that? For those affected, is it just this or w/ any clock of this sort
Answer: You must press the SNOOZE/LIGHT button and then the REVERSE button. If you reference the manual here:http://site.ambientweatherstore.com/Manuals/rc8427.pdfIt is referenced in Section 5.6.2.
Question: Does the ac adaptor accept 220v? also, is the radio controlled clock compatible with the european frequency (dcf77) or does it read only the us one
Answer: No, it will always project both at the same time.

User questions & answers

Question: How loud is the alarm
Answer: Not very loud. And it’s just a beep. But the room temp and time on the ceiling is a nice feature
Question: Is the projection constant or do you have to press a button to project the time
Answer: It is either or.....which is nice. I keep mine on "constant" so in the middle of the night I can just look up to check the time. This is my second Ambient clock - Ambient JUST illuminates the time and temp on the ceiling without a backlight - the others, which I have purchased and returned, have backlighting which tends to light up the room way too much. I highly recommend this clock - my initial one lasted over 15 years and read the instructions because you can change the direction 180 degrees Good Luck!
Question: Can someone tell me why my clock (brand new) keeps jumping ahead 3 hours at night?? Tried resetting it several times and it keeps doing it
Answer: It appears you have the wrong time zone set. I am guessing you live in the Pacific Time Zone and you set the Eastern Time Zone by mistake. The manual helps you change the time zone back to Pacific.
Question: Hummm. this says it's a radio controlled clock. but is it also a am fm radio also? or no
Answer: No, it is radio controlled time but not an AM/FM clock radio. Atomic clocks, radio controlled clocks and exact set clocks are all different names for clocks that keep perfect time by automatically synchronizing to the radio signal emitted from the U.S. Atomic Clock in Colorado. Answer: As I see it on the Ambient page, I see temperature, humidity, and wind trending data that spans more than a week. The rain data is displayed as daily, weekly, monthly, and annually.

    User questions & answers

Question: How can i operate two consoles with their own remotes? i currently have one, i want to add one more. total 10 sensors (5 per unit
Answer: I have had 8 remotes for 7 months with standard alkaline batteries, had to change only one set since. If placing in hard to get to locations you may want to consider lithium ion batteries.
Question: What is the range & accuracy of the humidity sensors
Answer: I don't think so. The list of compatible devices doesn't seem to list the WS-50. You might check with Ambient Weather for a definitive answer.
Question: Is it possible to write my own software to pull temperature and humidity data from the console via USB
    Answer: Yes it will work
Question: what memory size sd cards are supported
Answer: Over a period of time, high humidity and condensation may have an effect on the electronics of the remote sensor. It is not weatherproof. I would place the unit in a sheltered location or in an enclosure that would limit exposure to direct moisture. Replacement remote sensors are relatively inexpensive at about $14. I have extensive experience with electronics.

    User questions & answers

Question: Can i use 2 separate display consoles with the ambient weather ws-2902? i'd like to see readings in 2 different areas of the house
Answer: I have two display consoles and it works great. One upstairs and one on ground floor. I can see both on-line and on phone via app. I set alerts in case HVAC issues, which is great benefit as well. I ordered WS-2902A-CONSOLE-KIT which is what you need.
Question: Can it only be line of sight
Answer: Wireless devices transmit a radio frequency (RF) signal, generally in the 400 – 900 MHz range. The manufacturer will rate the maximum transmission distance as line of sight. However, the signal will transmit through walls and other obstructions. The following is a table of reception loss vs. the transmission medium. Each “wall” or obstruction decreases the transmission range by the factor shown below. Medium RF Signal Strength Reduction Glass (untreated) 5-15% Plastics 10-15% Wood 10-40% Brick 10-40% Concrete 40-80% Metal 90-100% RF will not transmit through metal barriers. If you have aluminum siding or a metal roof, it is unlikely the RF signal will transmit through this barrier. RF will not transmit through earth. For example, if the receiver is placed in the basement, and the earth or ground is obstructing the line of sight transmission, it will not receive the signal. Interference can be an issue. In general, wireless internet, phones, security systems and other low power devices have little interference effect. Ham Radio and other high power applications may lose data when transmitting. Helpful Hint: Wireless phones transmit at similar frequencies and power levels as wireless weather devices. If you have a wireless phone (not a cell phone), place the receiver where you would place the weather station receiver and attempt to use the phone where you would place the transmitter. If you can not use the wireless phone, it is unlikely the weather station will work either.
Question: Is the outdoor sensor "hi quality"? I have had 2 Acurite outdoor sensors electronics fail in a 1 Yr. I am a full time Rv'r / camp in any weather
Answer: My Accuwrong failed in the 13th month and support from Accurite was horrible at best. I had an Amibeint for over 10 years but the ws 2902 is not working, they sent me 3 replacement units all with the same issue, NOT TRANSMITTING.
Question: What differentiates this from higher priced options like the ws-1002-wifi? Software connectivity doesn't matter to me. Are the sensors lower quality
Answer: No, they are of equal quality. The console on the WS-1002-WiFi is much nicer with multiple screens and TFT display. This is LCD with color film. The WS-2902 is a very capable unit.
