| Answer: | It is a sturdy gauge of metal proper to this type of lantern. It does not have a tinned metal finish. Instead, it has a finely applied black satin colored coating. Might be powder coated. The candle ring is 2 inches diameter and about 1/4 inch high for a small pillar. Over this, I prefer inserting a round primitive taper candle dish that has crimped edges. The interior space for this is 4 1/4 inches square. Mine fits snug and removes easily for candle maintenance and wax cleanup, especially with its convenient latched door. I love it for being a high quality, inexpensive "correct" lantern for early period re-enactments. If it "walks off" some night, I haven't lost a lot. |

| Answer: | The glass opening is 7" tall. I have a 5" tall pillar candle in mine right now (mainly because that's what I already had) and I think it looks fine. A 3" tall pillar or a tea light may be better if you want more open space above the candle though. |

I am also fairly young with pretty decent night vision so... The LED battery candles may provide more light; I am not sure. |

On the other hand, there ARE alternative lighting options from other sellers. I bought a string of solar lighting from a Canadian seller to put in empty [wine bottles] jars, which work so-so. It's a shame but the Achla Design lantern lights are quite fragile and irreplaceable. |

The battery is sealed inside. That is my major issue with these lights. The solar lights on 2 of 3 of my cones stopped working within a few weeks of me setting them outside. I cannot replace the battery, and I also tried to find contact info for the company (unsuccessfully) because I wanted to try to get replacement solar lights for the cones. The cones are gorgeous, but the lights that go inside them are not good quality, nor are they replaceable. I have also looked for something from another company that might fit in the top of the cone, but have not had any luck with that so far. |
