Answer:	They definitely move back and forth, and up and down and are adjustable. Unfortunately, the little hand tightened clamps are not designed in a way that they can be tightened in a robust way. I had to take black gorilla tape and wrap the bars on each side of the horizontal and vertical connection points to hold them firmly in place. Having said this, it is a really effective bar in terms of keeping our lab from going through the windshield in a wreck. We have it in a large SUV. With the tape on the bars, it is very secure and sturdy.

Answer:	I'm using it in a 2016 Subaru Forrester and it works well. It is very adjustable with two add on pieces to make it wider. I'm not sure about the Ford Escape but I would think as long as the main component of the barrier is not too wide for your vehicle you'd be okay. You can always make it wider.
