Answer:	As you can see from the pictures, the shovel head is wide at the top and narrows down from there. It's great for digging hard soil and uprooting plants, though. Not sure how it would work in sandy soil.

Answer:	The bit is a masonry bit. I used it in the mortar between the bricks, not in the brick itself, and used the plastic in those holes to mount the bracket. It's been up for a few months now with no issues.

The thumbscrews are definitely some type of carbon steel as they are rusted and they stuck to a magnet. Now I'm disappointed! I believe I should and will buy replacement stainless steel thumbscrews.
