12 best bat houses

Bat houses, also known as bat boxes, are specially designed structures that provide shelter and habitat for bats. They are used to encourage and support bat populations in various outdoor settings, including backyards, gardens, and wildlife conservation areas. Here's what you should know about bat houses:

  1. Purpose: The primary purpose of bat houses is to offer bats a safe and secure place to roost, rest, and raise their young. Bats are valuable for ecosystems and agriculture because they help control insect populations by feeding on flying insects like mosquitoes and agricultural pests.

  2. Design: Bat houses come in different designs, but they typically consist of wooden or plastic boxes with multiple chambers or crevices where bats can roost. The design aims to mimic the natural roosting sites that bats seek out, such as tree cavities, crevices in buildings, or rock overhangs.

  3. Location: Proper placement is crucial for the success of bat houses. They should be installed in areas with good sun exposure, typically facing south or east. Ideally, bat houses should be mounted at least 10 to 15 feet above the ground to keep them safe from predators and disturbances. They should be away from bright lights, which can deter bats.

  4. Materials: Bat houses are typically made from untreated wood, such as cedar or plywood. The interior surfaces may have rough textures to help bats grip and hang securely. The design should ensure that the inside remains dry to prevent mold and disease.

  5. Chamber Size: Different bat species have varying preferences for roosting space. Some prefer single-chamber bat houses, while others may favor multi-chamber designs. Researching the bat species native to your region can help you choose an appropriate bat house design.

  6. Maintenance: Bat houses require minimal maintenance. Cleaning them periodically to remove guano (bat droppings) and parasites is advisable. It's best to do this during the winter months when bats are not using the boxes.

  7. Conservation: Installing bat houses can contribute to bat conservation efforts. Many bat species are threatened by habitat loss, making artificial roosting sites vital for their survival. Supporting bat populations can help control insect pests naturally and benefit local ecosystems.

  8. Regulations: In some regions, there may be regulations or guidelines regarding the installation of bat houses, especially if they attract protected or endangered bat species. It's important to research and follow local laws and recommendations.

In summary, bat houses are designed to provide roosting sites for bats, offering numerous benefits to ecosystems and agriculture. Properly designed, located, and maintained bat houses can attract bat colonies and contribute to the conservation of these important flying mammals while also enhancing outdoor spaces like gardens and wildlife areas.

Question: Is this designed for nothern (Colder) climates like Michigan
Answer: I’m not sure there is such a thing as “designed for northern climates, but I will say that this box is poorly constructed. I had to re-tack it and glue it

Answer: This is for bats. There is no way for a bird to make a nest in there. It is way too small and tight and no place for a nest to be constructed.
Question: how many bats will it hold
Answer: I thought it was rated for about 18 to 24 bats, but after about 3 months, I'm still waiting for my first occupant. It is well constructed and I have it firmly attached to a tree, so , hopefully, it'll get occupied soon.Troy S.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this made in the USA
Answer: Hi Red! Unfortunately not :( But we are an American family owned and run business! Hope that helps :)
Question: Is it correct that the 2 Chamber house isn't recommended for pole mount, due to it's smaller size
Answer: Hi there! Yes, I can confirm that all bat houses that are less than 2 feet high tend to be more effective when installed on the side of your house or building. One of the most important factors in a successful bat house occupancy is the internal roosting temperature of the bat house. And your building/house would act like a heat sink which would help regulate the internal temperate of the bat house. Hope that helps. Please feel free to reach back out anytime if there are any other questions I can assist with. Have a nice day :) Rebecca
Question: How many bats will it hold
Answer: I have not installed this yet, but for what I have read about bat houses this can hold over 200 bats. I know, it seems crazy like a lot...we’ll see.
Question: We live in Florida. Do you recommend the black or brown for our climate
Answer: Hi there! Rebecca here from customer service :) The brown color bat house is more suitable for the Florida region climate (based on the Bat Conservation International's recommendation). The black bat house would retain more heat than the bats in your area would be comfortable with. Hope that helps!

Question: What do the colors do
Answer: The darker the color the more heat the bat house absorbs from the sun. The lighter the color of the less heat the bat house absorbs.
Question: Currently have many bats roosting behind my dark green/black shutters. Should I order black? Map says order dark brown
Answer: From what I’ve read, areas that suggest using dark brown can also use black. I think it has to do with the colors ability to absorb light/heat for the bats to roost in.
Question: How high up

User questions & answers

Question: Is there any safe, effective way to keep wasps from inhabiting the bat house
Answer: Hi there! We've designed the bat house with a 3/4" inch opening, which is a size recommended by experts and that have been known let bats in while reducing the likelihood of wasps nesting inside. The most effective way to prevent wasp nestings would be to manually check the bat house and clean it out of any nesting material. It is generally recommended to do that once a year before the spring. But If wasp nestings are too common in your area, you may benefit from conducting a visual check on the bat house (while bats are not there) once a month to make sure wasps have not set up a nest inside. Hope that helps!
Question: Is the inside painted or natural wood
Answer: natural wood
Question: Simply instal and the house will attract bats? No bait or spray needed to start
Answer: Hi there! Based on the research and the extensive experience of bat scientists at BCI and MTBC, there is no evidence that bat attractant sprays or bait are effective at all in attracting bats to your bat house. And so it is safe to say that you could save your money from being spent on attractants :) If a bat house is installed correctly and meets several important criteria, bats are pretty good at finding it on their own. When they are scouting for a home to roost in, they are able to detect nooks and cavities while flying! Here are some of the most important criteria for installing a bat house correctly: 1) It is placed somewhere where it can receive at least 7 hours of direct sunlight. 2) it is at least 10 to 12 feet above ground. 3) Avoid installing your bat house on a tree as that will make it a fast food restaurant for predators! 4) It is within at least half a mile of a body of water. 5) For this particular 4-compartment bat house, it has proven to be very successful when installed on the side of a house or a building. The reason being is that your house will act like a heat sink that will help regulate the internal temperature of the bat house. Those are some of the things that will attract bats into your bat house! There are more proven tips that you can apply to make sure that your bat house is installed correctly. And we wrote a fee guide with MTBC that outlines the best practices and recommendations in this regard. Hope this helps :) Please feel free to reach out at anytime if you have any other questions! Product description

Create a home for nature’s only remaining flying mammals. You may be concerned with the severe decline in bat population, or simply want to provide a safe and secure home for the furry flyers. Installing a bat house on your property will create a safe and lasting habitat for those little night time aerial acrobats.

We proudly hand craft each shelter in our tiny woodworking shop in the Upper Midwest. Your pre-finished, select grade pine’s straight grained properties ensure structural integrity and years of use in harsh outdoor conditions. This premium lumber is free of knots, drastically reducing sap odor (which could deter inhabitation). Narrow interior dimensions ensure a cozy environment conducive to heat retention. Bat ecologists and conservationists recommend that bat shelters installed in most areas of the U.S. be painted or stained a dark color. Save yourself the time and trouble, choose a pre-finished bat shelter! Each bat house arrives at your door ready to install, there are pre-drilled mounting holes in the lower section, and a steel hanger installed on the back. We include 3- 2 ½ inch exterior grade deck screws and instructions for mounting on your house, a tree, or a free-standing pole.

User questions & answers

Question: Can anyone verify if they actually got bats in them
Answer: Yes. I gave my Grandson this bat house for his Birthday last July. Within a week he had several bats take up residence in it. They live in Me. and the mosquitoes were extremely vicious there.. The bats are on the rise, the skeeters are on the decline.
Question: How many bats can live in these
Answer: 5 bats from the suburbs; and 12 from the inner city.
Question: Can you recommend a bat house for south carolina's lowcountry
Answer: You really could go either way (dark vs. cedar) considering average temperatures in your area. Looks like your average highs top out at 95 degrees in summer which is probably about max for bats in a dark shaded house, they'd definitely appreciate the extra warmth with your winter lows. Considering that bats prefer to be warm and cozy I think the dark shade would be best. Have a great day! -Matt
Question: Does it need a garage below so they can park their batmobiles
Answer: A cone of silence is also appreciated.

Location is Key to Success!

Placement during bat box installation is just as important as the bat box itself. Bat House Installation has many variables depending on where you live, shade, sun, decks, pets, neighbors, in or out of the city, …etc.

The concept of attracting bats is to attract female bats, specifically female bats that are pregnant looking for a place to give birth to babies. As with other living species wherever the females are, the males will be close by.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this ok for Pa?? I saw it was for hot and warm climates
Answer: It will be okay for PA, but the dark stained version (follow the link below) will increase the chances for bats to during cool seasons because the darker color draws more heat from the sun. It will also improve chances for bats to hibernate there through winter. https://www.amazon.com/Pre-finished-climates-Environmentally-Responsible-Eco-Friendly/dp/B0752VQY1Y/ref=sr_1_9?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1509097522&sr=1-9&keywords=bat+house
Question: Sorry, but I need to know) Do Bats poop in their house and cause a mess down the wall that their house is hung on
Answer: Bat poo is an excellent fertilizer. It's known as guano and may be bought at plant nurseries. It's rather expensive. Like worm castings, you only need a small amount per plant. I'm a gardener and would consider it a benefit for my garden. I just wouldn't handle it with my bare hands.
Question: where do the bats go in winter? i live in maryland
Answer: Some bats hibernate during the winter, usually in caves or mines (or attics), while others migrate to warmer areas where there would be more insects on which to feed. If you have the internet, search for bats that hibernate or migrate. There is plenty of info on bats out there and they are good to have around.
Question: I just read that cedar bat house being aromatic wood need to air out for 2 to 4 years for the oils to dry and dissipate before bats move in. True
Answer: I think 2-4 years is a little excessive, though I have read research which indicates that the smell of cedar may deter in-habitation. It is for that reason that I also offer a select grade pine version. The select grade lumber has no knots, therefore no sap and no odor. My cedar bat houses are made of western red cedar, not eastern red (aromatic) cedar. Aromatic cedar is what is commonly used to line closets and chests to deter moths and has a much stronger odor. Western Red Cedar does have an odor, and may take a few months to "air out". The vast majority of bat houses sold commercially are made of some sort of cedar, and do successfully attract and house bats. Kind of a long winded answer, if you are still interested in avoiding cedar check out my pine version. I'm currently only offering pine with a dark stain finish which will work for most U.S. climates. Thanks and feel free to contact me with any other questions James! -Matt Applewood Outdoor | Wisconsin Proud
