13 best propane regulator
A propane regulator is a crucial component in the operation of propane-powered grills and outdoor cooking equipment. It plays a vital role in controlling the flow and pressure of propane gas from the propane tank to the grill or appliance. Here's what you should know about propane regulators:
Function: The primary function of a propane regulator is to reduce the high-pressure gas from the propane tank to a lower, consistent pressure suitable for the grill or cooking appliance. This controlled flow of gas ensures safe and efficient operation.
Compatibility: Propane regulators come in various sizes and configurations to match the specific requirements of different grills and outdoor cooking equipment. It's important to choose a regulator that is compatible with your grill model and the size of your propane tank.
Pressure Rating: Propane regulators are designed to maintain a specific pressure output. Common pressure ratings for residential grills are around 11 inches water column (inWC). Commercial or high-demand applications may require different pressure ratings.
Inlet and Outlet Connections: Propane regulators typically have threaded inlet and outlet connections. The inlet connects to the propane tank, while the outlet attaches to the grill's gas line or hose. These connections need to be compatible with your tank and grill.
Adjustability: Some propane regulators have adjustable pressure settings, allowing you to fine-tune the gas flow to meet your specific cooking needs. This feature can be helpful when you require precise control over cooking temperatures.
Safety Features: Propane regulators often incorporate safety features such as excess flow valves (EFVs) or pressure relief devices. EFVs are designed to automatically shut off the gas flow if there is a sudden increase due to a gas leak or a severed line.
Replacement and Maintenance: Over time, regulators may wear out or become less efficient. It's essential to regularly inspect your regulator for signs of damage or wear and replace it if necessary. Additionally, ensure that all connections are secure to prevent gas leaks.
Installation: Proper installation is crucial for the safe operation of propane regulators. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, and if you are unsure about the installation process, it's advisable to seek professional help.
Safety Precautions: When working with propane regulators, always follow safety precautions. This includes turning off the propane tank when not in use, checking for gas leaks using a soapy water solution, and keeping the grill or cooking area well-ventilated.
Propane regulators are essential components for propane-powered grills and outdoor cooking equipment, as they ensure the safe and controlled flow of gas to facilitate cooking. Proper maintenance, compatibility, and safety considerations are key to using propane regulators effectively.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work in my food trailer with 4 nurners and a griddle |
Answer: | It should. |
Question: | Why is there a rubber washer in the 3/8 flared? Does that need to be in the for this hose, or can you remove it |
Answer: | Supposedly, it's there to create a tighter seal between the regulator & the propane tank. Wouldn't recommend removing it. |
Question: | hi does anyone know if this will work with the powerland pd3g8500e tri fuel gas lpg ng generator 8.5kw 16hp. i just bought it. i'm a little nervous |
Answer: | It will probably work, but getting the right setting may be difficult. If you try it I would recommend taping the regular nob in place when you get the flow correct. Use the tank/line as a total on and off control for the propane flow. It is is very easy to turn the red knob and change the flow. Also recommend contacting the manufacturer of your generator and asking if it has a lpg regular built in, which it should since flow rates for lpg and ng will not be the same. |
Question: | I don"t see a pressure gauge how do you know how much pressure you are applying |
Answer: | Hello Amazon Customer! With these type of regulators you want to base your pressure by the performance of the flame, however if your propane appliance is pressure sensitive I recommend going with our regulators that have gauge. 2120: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GRFTR4S 2123:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GR9T2H3 Thank you! -Gas One |

Answer: | Not sure on that. No markings that I've seen. I haven't needed more that 30psi, so I know that's ok. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of hose is required for this regulator? does it need a flared or npt male end |
Answer: | There are both inlet (3/8) and outlet (2*1/4) hoses required; 3 total. The fitting connections are "1/4” Inv. Flare x 3/8” FPT" See manufacturer specification at https://www.marshallexcelsior.com/sites/default/files/MECCatalogWebversion.pdf on page 26. |
Question: | Switch to the left for the left tank. To the right for the right tank. Is straight up for auto |
Answer: | Lever straight up means that the pressure will equalize on both cylinders and you will use propane from both cyclinders at the same time. This means that you will empty both cylinders at the same time too. Thus, it defeats the design of a auto change-over regulator which is meant to keep you have having an interruption of service when a cylinder empties. Additionally, with the lever in the middle, you will be operating at a 1/3 less BTU capacity as neither pressure spring in the top half of the regulator is depressed. Both springs would be relaxed. Move the lever all the way to one side or the other. Which ever side you point the lever to... that determines the primary cylinder. The opposite side is the reserve cylinder. When the cylinder pressure gets down to approx 17 psi, the indicator will change to RED and the regulator will automatically switch to the reserve cylinder. This keeps you have having an interruption of service. However, when the regulator switches on it’s own, you are operating on 1/3 less BTU capacity. Once you move the lever over to the opposite side, the indicator will change to GREEN and the BTU capacity will then go back to it’s full capacity as that cylinder is now the primary and the one that just emptied becomes the reserve. Once that lever is moved to that opposite side, you can then close the service valve on the take that emptied and disconnect the pigtail and have that empty cylinder refilled so that you’ll be ready with the new primary tank empties and not have the service interrupted. |
Question: | Will this work for residential home use connecting in order >2-100LB. cylinders to this auto reg. then to the 1st stage reg then to 2nd stage reg |
Answer: | Yes, you can use this auto change-over two stage regulator for a residential home application with 2-100lb cylinders. This two stage regulator is designed to take cylinder pressure( which is affected by the size of cylinder, the amount of LP in the cylinder and the outside temperature) and convert that high pressure down to 10 psi thru the first stage of the regulator. Then, that 10 psi is converted one more time thru the lower pressure side of the regulator. The low pressure side of the regulator takes the 10 psi and converts down to approx 1/2 psi (9-15 column inches of water). This is what a two stage regulator does. Two stages regulators are required on applicances that are in a residence or RV. A single stage regulator is designed for outdoor applicances only. |
Question: | If the regulator switches automatically, what is the purpose of the lever? Does the lever move when the tanks switch |
Answer: | It switches from empty tank to full tank automatically. You need to switch the lever manually to the full tank in use so you can remove the empty tank for refill. |

Answer: | Only if you reverse polarity on the input wires. |
Question: | why do the two pictures for the regulator look different |
Answer: | I've been running one of these pumps off a 12v 20watt panel. The pump only operates when the panel is receiving the maximum amount of light. I don't think 5 watts would be enough to get one of these pumps to turn over. |
Question: | will this connect to a house line to a stove |
Answer: | I don’t see why not? Give it a shot , if it doesn’t work just buy a new one. It is not that expensive. |
Question: | Lp gas converter 3/8 to |
Answer: | I never measured the pressure but it is not much. It does not shut off when pressure builds, it continues to run. I replaced it with a larger unit I needed more flow. |
