User questions & answers
Question: | It warns against using in elevations higher than 4,500 FT. Have you had success at |
Answer: | Yes, there have been units with success over 4,500 ft, what this means is we aren't able to guarantee successful operation of these heaters are higher than 4,500 ft. |
Question: | How many hours or days will it run with a 20# bottle |
Answer: | I recently insulated a 14’ x 20‘ workshop attachment on my garage. I got this heater and before I bought a big tank I tried it on a 10 pound tank from my grill. It was set on number one setting the temperature outside was in the 30s and I got 64 hours out of it holding just over 60°. So I figure a 20 pound bottle should last me little over five days. So I’m going to get a 30 pound bottle that way I only have to refill about once a week. Warmer weather less often, I hope this helps. |
Question: | It dont tell the dimensions? Is it 20" wide |
Answer: | The dimensions for the heater are 23 3/4" W x 11 1/4" D x 27" H. |
Question: | Can u use propane tank from a grill and how long would it last |
Answer: | Quick math says about 17 hrs on full tank. This heater has a high and low output, controlled by the thermostat, not the user. One gallon propane would last approx 4 hours. A full 20 lb tank holds about 4.5 gallons. |
Question: | how long does it last on a small propane tank |
Answer: | The 1# tank will ice up and slowly turn off the heater on anything but the lowest setting. That lasts about 2 hours. A little buddy heater with 4K/9K Btu works best with the 1# cylinders. I have the hose hookup for a 20# tank and it's nice to have the option of using either size. You have to light this one with a lighter which is just another thing to forget to pack. |
Question: | Just tried to make coffee on it and the grill started to collapse is there a sturdier grill for it |
Answer: | As far as I know... No. A simular thing happened to me. I reattached the grill using good old fashioned wire hanger twisted. This was only a temporary fix. |
Question: | Did anyone get the "foot" for the 1 lb. bottles and is it a worthwhile add-on |
Answer: | Not sure what you're referring to. The one lb. bottle hangs suspended when connected. I wouldn't recommend getting this model. Get the model MH12C if you can. The regulator broke after a couple months and I couldn't return it. Instead I bought the regulator that was for the MH12C and adapted it to fit the MH15C. Since then it's been working great for a year. I also recommend purchasing the hose adapter so you can run off a 20 lb. bottle. It'll last a lot longer |
Question: | how long does a 1lb bottle last compared to a 20lb bottle |
Answer: | A one pound bottle on medium setting will last about 1-1/2 hour so figure at least 25 hrs for a 20 pounder. |

Blue Flame Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Blue Flame heater warms the air. It doesn’t radiate the heat like an infrared unit. It can be put in a narrow area because the heat rises and warms the area from the ceiling down. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers |
Answer: | For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired) |
Question: | can i hook a large propane tank to his |
Answer: | Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port). |
Question: | How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister |
Answer: | Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty. |
Question: | Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning |
Answer: | As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this hook up to my natural gas system or is it just for use with 20 gallon tank you buy |
Answer: | Not for natural gas. hook up to LP, any size tank. ours is hooked up to outside 100 # tank. |
Question: | Can the fan be used if mounted on wall |
Answer: | Yes. I have mine standing on the floor but it came with the hardware for wall mounting. The hardware included spacers so the fan will be able to breathe. However, the fan does require to be plugged in so you need to mount close to an outlet. The heater itself has a battery ignitor so it can be used during power outages. |
Question: | Is anything else required for use with this heater? How does the propane hook up to it |
Answer: | You will need to buy a hose and regulator to hook up to a propane tank. You will also need some adapter fittings for the gas line since the fitting on the heater is a 3/8 NPT and the typical hose has 3/8 Flare fitting. You can get a universal Gas hook up kit that has all the adapters plus a shut off valve. The shut off valve is critical if it will be hard lined into a gas system instead of off a separate tank |
Question: | Does it have legs to set on the floor |
Answer: | Yes, you have to attach them - very simple and only 4 screws. Very pleased with the Heater though I added a blower and the auto temp switch functions improperly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is the gas inlet located |
Answer: | If you are facing the front of the heater, the gas connection can be found on the lower right hand side coming from the rear. |
Question: | I am concerned about having to use a battery to ignite the pilot light. Is this a problem and are there other types of ignition systems |
Answer: | This uses a very small battery for ignition. The life of it is usually not an issue. |
Question: | After starting the unit up for the very first time and letting it heat up for 5 or so minutes my fire/smoke detectors went off, is this normal |
Answer: | I had a scenario where this heater made a serious billowing smoke show. Kicked the smoke detectors off immediately. Only happened 2- 3 times in a 2 ish year period. It happened with this propane heater too. Don't let this scare you though. Can happen with any infrared heater. It only happened several times over a period of about 2 years. So it probably only happened 1 out of a thousand times where the pilot light was on, but for some reason when it went to light up the burner bricks it malfunctioned and billowed out smoke like you wouldn't believe. Made it hard to get to the heater to turn it off. ALWAYS worked after simply turning it off, and ligting it up again. Maybe another reason why you must have working smoke detectors. Doesn't keep me from buying another one! Overcome your fears. Doesn't mean you won't first feel afraid if smoke suddenly starts pouring out of the kitchen. Lol. NEVER let your fears control you. Everything breaks it's just a matter of time. Keep safety # 1. |
Question: | what is the thermostat temperature range in degrees high/low |
Answer: | There is no real thermostat in Mr. Heater. It is more of a reostat the controls the time the 5 panels are on and off. At the number 1 setting the panels are on a short time and off a longer time. As you go from 1 up the panels stay on longer and the off time gets shorter. I have not been able to run on the 5 setting as the CO2 sensor turns the heater off after two cycles of setting 2. My external carbon dioxide sensor also goes off after 15 minutes of operation and on setting 2 and after the Mr Heater CO2 sensor turns off the propane. I would not recommend this heater to anyone. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with a waranty? If yes, what are the details |
Answer: | SPORTOURO tailgate bike pads for 5 bikes are 54" wide - quick research suggested that the 2021 Ram Rebel tailgate is about 60" wide so it should fit and still have extra room (uncovered tailgate surface). We strongly recommend you check the width of your truck's tailgate before purchasing. In any case, if you find issues after purchasing just get in touch and we will happily look after you! |
Question: | is the outlet presure adjustable |
Answer: | You may find you don’t necessarily need to do anything to secure the rear wheel. Unless you are shuttling up super rough mountain roads the bikes don't move much! The way the bike’s fork angles over the tailgate does a surprisingly good job of limiting any movement on its own. Combined with the strap for the downtube and the small bumper pads just adding another layer of security. There should be grooves in the bed of the truck that you can set the rear wheel into to limit movement too. If you are really concerned about it, you can simply run a ratchet strap or a bungee from the rear cargo hooks over the top tube of the bikes or thru the frame, or even over the rear wheel itself. Just a few ideas to help out Any other questions just let us know, the SPORTOURO team is always here to help. Enjoy your rides! |
Question: | How does the tank level indicator work? Is it a color code or is there a graduated gauge or what |
Answer: | Yes, tailgates can accommodate children's bikes. However, the tube of the bike must be at least 4 inches in diameter. |
Question: | Can you use this with a 32,000 btu 40 gal Raheem water heater |
Answer: | Hello, The width of the tailgate pad is 54 inches. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What size propane tank does it use |
Answer: | You can use the little green bottles as is and if you get the double make ended hoses that go to the big 20lb tanks you can use them too! It’s very versitle. I use it on the big tank when camping I have both the little buddy and the mister heater big buddy. |
Question: | Would this be safe in a truck camper shell |
Answer: | Probably not, because it could ignite gas tank fumes. There's also a carbon monoxide worry-otherwise, it does mount on the wall and radiates heat out, although I had to deal with heat directly above the unit where you wouldn't suspect it. In my case a little aluminum foil protects those combustibles above the unit. In other words, in an emergency maybe, but be careful! |
Question: | How many hours does the heater work on a single propane tank |
Answer: | It depends on how cold it is and how much the heater is running Johnat4197065064 |
Question: | Does the hose come with regulator and connectors in this combo kit |
Answer: | I bought the heater & carry case, the regulator & connectors for the 20lb. propane have to be ordered separately. The heater is set up for the small bottle. The hose for the 20lb. is a very specific item. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can everything be drained enough (after use) that it doesn't get damaged by freezing temperatures during storage between uses |
Answer: | Yes. I hold the 2 hoses vertical to drain them, but the one with the pump I shake (the pump) to get every last drop. The main heater unit has a drain screw underneath, I believe, but I just tilt the unit without hoses attached to drain what little water is inside. BTW, I found another use... my grand daughters plastic kiddy pool holds 70 gallons of frigid 53F hose water. One little tank of propane more than heats it into the 90's! |
Question: | I want to replace the lead acid battery in this thing with a 12v lithium motorcycle starter battery. For that, I need to know the amp hours and size |
Answer: | The internal charger is not built with the stringent safety circuits for lithium-ion chemistry. Sealed lead-acid chargers are not interchangeable with Li-ion and is dangerous to do so. A 12 volt lead acid can safely receive upwards toward 14 volts, but 3 li-ion cells max out at 12.6v (3 times 4.2v cells). If the unit runs on the charger, then take a small yet powerful automotive Li-ion jump starter pack, and power it externally. Not as convenient as built-in, but Li-ion cells & chargers have much safety circuitry. |
Question: | Can you plug this into |
Answer: | I plug into 110 to charge the unit, but have not tried to operate it while plugged in |
Question: | since the xcw20 is rechargeable from a car battery, can it be attached to a 12 volt source for continuous operation |
Answer: | Fromt he manual: DC: Connect the 12V DC adapter to the appliance then connect to a suitable outlet with the cigarette lighter (FIG. 5) •To charge the unit using the DC connector the car must be running, due to the 12V direct link to the battery system it will not show on the LED indicator. •The unit will run directly from the 12V cigarette lighter but will not charge unless vehicle is running. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work to connect a propane tank to a heater |
Answer: | The opening of the tailgate flap starts approximately 3 inches down from the top of the tailgate. The flap is approximately 10 inches tall X 13 inches wide. So the bottom of the opening would be 13 inches from the top of the tailgate. |
Question: | Is the smaller fitting 3/8 flare |
Answer: | Should be fine. I have it on a 03 silverado. Its made for all full size trucks |
Question: | I have a large 420lb propane tank. Can this line be used to connect the tank to the first stage regulator |
Answer: | SPORTOURO tailgate bike pads for 5 bikes are 54" wide - should fit most tailgates in the market. We recommend you check the width of your truck's tailgate before purchasing. In any case, if you find issues after purchasing just get in touch and we will happily look after you! |
Question: | can i use this on a 100# tank and is the tank end pol or left hand thred |
Answer: | I’ve only had this product for abt a month, have only used it a couple of times & the velcro has continued to work |
