Question: How would you compare the performance between 14.5 an 18.5? same amount of charcoal? same amount of time to cook? any diff in temp control
Answer: Have used the 14.5 a few times now (tri-tip, meatloaf, two hot-n-fast cooks with pork butts)...It's a pretty cool little cooker. Have several years experience cooking with a tamale steamer converted smokey joe. Thus far, I'd have to say it cooks similarly to those (with the added bonus of a water pan and door). It holds less charcoal than the 18.5, for sure. For the hot-n-fast pork butt cooks I had to lift off top/center sections and refuel...not too difficult, but something I don't have to do with the 18.5. Haven't really tried a true low-n-slow cook yet...can't say how long cook time might be under those conditions (have had good 6 hour plus burn times on the converted smokey joes). When I cook hot-n-fast, to be honest, I just let 'er rip...this little guy gets plenty hot, plenty fast. Obviously, there's less space in the 14.5, you can get a butt on each grate and that's about it. I don't use water when cooking hot-n-fast either, but the water pan is much smaller than the 18.5. I think I'm going to enjoy cooking on this, but If I had to choose one...I might choose the 18.5 (increased charcoal/cooking capacity). Lucky me, I've got both and a couple of 22.5's!! Hope this helps.

Answer: I have owned the 22.5" for a year and I can tell you that it is worth the purchase. It can hold any piece of meat that you can think of putting on it and it stays fired up for all smoke jobs. I have smoked whole turkeys, briskets, pork butts, chicken, and burgers/brats/dogs. I would say I've put roughly 25 smokes on it and I have never had any issues with it. I also smoke for 4 people generally. The 18.5" is going to be exactly the same thing except in a smaller form. It may not have the room you are looking for if you get a large cut. I have seen a lot of comments saying that the 22.5" uses more fuel and while that is correct it doesn't have to be filled to the brim for a smoke. I normally use a half ring and if I need a few more coals I just throw them on. Never had an issue with it. I would rather have the size and not need it than regret not getting the extra room. If this is well taken care of it could last for several decades so what is the big deal with spending an extra $100. Just my 2 cents.

Answer: NO, it does not fit ALL Masterbuilt 40" electric smokers. My newly delivered MES-140S is a prime example. Made the mistake of believing what it said ON THE FREAKIN' BOX, "Fits all Masterbuilt 30-inch and 40-inch Digital electric smokers" Took the leg kit and smoker out of their boxes, tried to put them together, and the didn't fit. Thought I might have missed something in the pictograph instructions, so I called Masterbuilt. Gave them the model # off my new smoker and from the instructions for the leg kit. CS rep spends 5 minutes looking it up and comes back with, "I'm sorry sir, that leg kit isn't compatible with that smoker." So Buyer beware

Question: Can you change the chips out without opening the door and losing all your heat and smoke
Answer: There is a small door for the chip pan to go in and out of. Since the chip-pan-door is at the bottom of the unit, you lose very little heat/smoke even if you were to leave it open while loading chips. The chip-pan-door will not stay open unless you hold it open.
Question: How often do I need to change the wood chips? It seems like mine quit smoking after about 20 minutes
Answer: The chops will smoke heavily for about 30 minutes but leave them in until all you gave is ash product. Fill completely again.

Answer: It's the wrong kind of smoker for smoking cheese. You are looking for a cold smoker. This is a hot smoker that is made to cook and smoke meat at the same time and will have a temp. of 160 to 180 degrees F. Cold smokers have a temperature of 70 to 80 degrees F. They are used for things like cheese, nuts, bacon, ham. Meats for a cold smoker have to be cured first. Often the fire box will be completely separate from the cold smoker to give the smoke time to cool down and cold smoking is done during cooler times of the year to keep the temperature down.

Answer: Well it's a 250 watt element. So for 24 hours that's 6 kilowatt hours(kWh). So look on your electric bill for your kWh pricing. Multiply your kWh price by 6 and you've got the answer. Answer: No. The smoke and other invisible fumes (carbon monoxide) are not safe to breathe. This needs to be used outdoors. If the seal around the door was improved, you could maybe justify using it in a garage with some duct work attached to the vent in the back and routed safely outside. Do not use this in an area intended for continuous occupancy. Do not use it near anything flammable or combustible.

The smoking process is different from grilling.

Smoking uses a low heat and a longer cooking cycle, usually in the 200℉ to 275℉ range. Grilling requires higher temperatures, perhaps 400℉ and above.

Answer: I have done 10 pounds easy. If it didn't fit, a slight trim is justified. Mine is 18 inches in diameter so no problem.

Answer: I ordered a briggs for my tiller. What I got was a Briggs from china. Fuel tank was dinged and paid was chipping away right out the box. I sent it back the same day. It was exactly what you'd get at harbor freight only black with Briggs logo on it. I believe Briggs has a cheap china line and a better us line. Make sure you get the us line. Make sure its plastic fuel tank so the tank doesn't rust over winter. Or do like I did and buy a Honda. There is a Co. That sells open box new tested motors. My honda is a bit smaller then the briggs I was going to get but has all the power to run my tiller and one pull start. If you do get a honda or Briggs. Make sure it has the throttle for rpm adjustment unless you dont need that. As far as what particular models you need. I cant help you.

Question: can you grill with this smoker
Answer: Although there are some offset smokers that are designed to allow grilling on the offset box directly over the coals, this one is not that way, smoker only.
Question: need exact dimensions. width - just smoker and wood box - no legs / height of vertical smoker and wood box
Answer: Smoker is 36"X16". Wood box is 14"X12.5". Both are 15" deep. This smoker did an amazing job on a batch of fish I recently did. No lack of smoke from this one.

Answer: My opinion is just turned around from these others, in that once meat reaches a certain temp, usually within about two hours, it will not add any more smoke flavor. Depending on what type of wood your using, hickory being one, you will give your meat a bitter taste. So after using your favorite wood initially then I will switch over to only charcoal if I'm using my Weber or a white oak wood that is very mild to finish it up. Nothing like smoking meat for 8-10 hours and have it taste bitter and over powering. Perfect smoked meat every time for me is charcoal on the Weber with the soak wood chunks for the first two hours and nothing but just plain charcoal the rest. I buy the Kingsford charcoal on memorial and labor day when there two for one. Generally a 5lb bag of chunks will last me nearly a year. So these guys spending $100 to smoke what only cost me about $10 per session. Get the pork butt to 190 degrees, wrap it in heavy duty foil and let it go another 30-45 minutes wrapped, pulled pork every time. Follow these instructions and I'd put your meat against anybody's taste wise... and enjoy the compliments!

Answer: What? No. These are for pellet grill cookers for mostly slow cooking. Far as I know they are all natural . Thanks
Question: Is humidity a factor with these pellets? Should the 40 lb bag be broken down into smaller bags, which will prevent them from drying out
Answer: They're already pretty much dried out. they have the same hardness and "dryness" as wood burning pellets. I live in Appalachia, and had them in an open container all summer, no issues with them getting too "wet" from humidity. I would definitely not let them get saturated though (ie, out in the rain, in a puddle etc), they will swell and then turn into sawdust. They definitely don't like to get wet.

Answer: It depends on how much you cook on the smoker. I bout a 40 lb bag in the beginning of summer and cooked every weekend for 4-6 hours. I just purchased a new 40 lb bag in September. The pellets burned slow and lasted me all summer. Now the bag I just bought will last me thru fall and winter until spring.
Question: can i use as rabbit litter
Answer: Not sure but I would suggest finding something cheaper unless rabbit litter is very expensive.
