14 best lump charcoals

Lump charcoal is a type of fuel commonly used in grilling and outdoor cooking. It is a popular choice among grilling enthusiasts due to its distinct characteristics and benefits. Here is some information about lump charcoal:

  1. Natural and Pure: Lump charcoal is made from chunks of hardwood that have been heated in the absence of oxygen until they carbonize. Unlike briquettes, which are typically composed of compressed charcoal dust and other additives, lump charcoal is a natural and pure form of charcoal. It contains no binders, chemicals, or fillers.

  2. High Heat: Lump charcoal is known for its ability to generate high heat quickly. It reaches higher temperatures than briquettes, making it an excellent choice for searing steaks and achieving that coveted grill marks.

  3. Quick Ignition: Lump charcoal ignites faster than briquettes, which means you can start cooking sooner after lighting your grill. This quick ignition is one reason why many grillers prefer lump charcoal for their barbecues.

  4. Distinct Flavor: Lump charcoal imparts a unique and natural smoky flavor to grilled foods. The type of hardwood used in the production of lump charcoal can influence the flavor profile of your grilled dishes. For example, oak, hickory, mesquite, and fruitwoods like apple or cherry can all be used to make lump charcoal, each imparting its own distinct taste.

  5. Less Ash Production: Lump charcoal tends to produce less ash compared to briquettes. This results in easier cleanup after grilling sessions.

  6. Variable Sizes: Lump charcoal comes in various sizes and shapes, ranging from small pieces to larger chunks. This diversity allows you to arrange the charcoal to control heat zones on your grill easily.

  7. Environmental Considerations: Many environmentally conscious grillers prefer lump charcoal because it is made from natural hardwood without additives or fillers. It is often considered a more eco-friendly option compared to briquettes containing binders and other non-wood materials.

  8. Consistency and Quality: While lump charcoal offers many advantages, it can vary in quality and consistency depending on the manufacturer and the type of wood used. It's a good idea to try different brands and wood types to find the lump charcoal that suits your grilling preferences.

  9. Storage: To keep your lump charcoal dry and ready for use, it's essential to store it in a cool, dry place, preferably in an airtight container or a resealable bag.

In summary, lump charcoal is a favored choice among grilling enthusiasts for its natural composition, high heat output, quick ignition, and the unique smoky flavor it imparts to grilled foods. It provides a versatile and flavorful option for outdoor cooking, enhancing the overall grilling experience.

User questions & answers

Question: Novice smoker here (webber smokey mountain 18" smoker) - what's the most efficient way to light this stuff? how much should i use for my small smoker
Answer: I use two to four natural charcoal fire starter squares. There are a number of brands on Amazon.
Question: Can you use it in a pizza oven
Answer: I assume that it is a wood fire pizza box. I use this in my Big Green Egg and it can generate temperature in excess of 600 degrees. I have to use vents to manage temperature. If the oven has air vent controls, than it should work.
Question: Is this additive free? If not, what is added? My husband is auto immune so he cant have most if not all additives
Answer: The front of the bag states “All Natural” and “Large Chunks Only / One Ingredient / Oak Hardwood / Hand Picked Pieces” so no mention of any additives.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: The bag says “Made In Mexico” but it is not specifically stated whether that is the source of the oak wood or the location of charcoal production or both.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it release carbon monoxide
Answer: Only if you burn it
Question: how long does this charcoal burn
Answer: Vague question, but it does last longer than most NLC I’ve utilized in my big green egg... if you’re cooking at 700 degrees, don’t expect it to last long (none will). If you’re cooking a brisket at 200 for 26 hours, you’ll have fuel left over. This is all I use now!

User questions & answers

Question: Why is this twice as expensive then buying it in the store? It is normally $21.00 for a 20 lbs bag. Am I reading this correct
Answer: If you can buy 20 lbs. for $21.00, Buy It!!
Question: How large are the lumps of charcoal
Answer: Due to the high carbonization, Rockwood is brittle and breaks down with agitation. Just like potato chips, it is all screened at the plant, so any small pieces and dust occur after bagging. So, it varies depending on the carrier's handling. Contrary to other brands' advertising, huge and dense chunks of "charcoal" are not a good thing. The reason they are huge and dense is because they are still full of wood fiber and water. Anything charcoal that is properly carbonized should be able to be broken apart by hand. If you have to use a hammer, you're paying for wood and water in a CHARCOAL product sold by weight. Buying local is going to be your best bet if you're looking for a highly carbonized charcoal that has the largest chunks possible.
Question: Why is this more than twice the cost of other retailers of this product
Answer: Shipping.....it's large and heavy. Half of that goes to UPS or Fedex. Stores buy multiple pallets at a time, much more economical to ship that way vs. by the bag.
Question: How many lbs are each bag
Answer: Each bag is 20-lbs.

Cowboy 24220 Lump Charcoal, 20-Pound

Cowboy

Based on 672 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Grilling over an open fire is the oldest method of cooking known to man. on the western frontier food was prepared over glowing wood embers and was characterized by its hearty flavor and inviting aroma. it was over those traditional fires that cowboy cuisine was born. the tradition continues with cowboy charcoal, a blend of oak, hickory and maple hardwoods. the high heat quickly seals in flavor and retains the foods' moisture, while imparting a distinct charcoal flavor. cowboy charcoal is an all natural charcoal product, it burns cleaner, lights easier and cooks better than briquettes. you'll use less charcoal and cook quicker.

  • All natural, 100-percent hardwood lump charcoal
  • Burns hot and fast to sear in foods' Flavor
  • Lights without using lighter fluid
  • No off tastes or flavors from additives used in briquettes
  • Environmentally sustainable, made from renewable resources

User questions & answers

Question: How do you light lump charcoal
Answer: Do not use lighter fluid. I used solid fire starters. Found it takes two in different locations to get the charcoal hot quicker. I recently started using the Bison-Airlighter to get it lighted faster.
Question: Can this be used in a portable grill for tailgating
Answer: Yes, as long as it’s a charcoal grill. This charcoal burns hotter & longer than Kingsford brickett charcoal.
Question: What type of wood is in this
Answer: I really don't know but I can say that I did not like it - it burns very rapidly. I prefer briquettes because they produce a controlled heat with a steady burn. I tried the stuff two or three times then used the remaining wood as kindling to start my wood stove. Waste of money in my opinion .

Kamado Joe KJ-Char Big Block XL Lump Charcoal, 20-Pound, Black

Kamado Joe

Based on 1 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal is made from real trees so it burns clean and gives you a robust wood-fire flavor. Some other brands are made from scrap furniture or processed wood. This means less wood-fire flavor. Burns hotter for moister meats!

Because Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal is made from hardwood, it burns hotter. This allows you to achieve steak- searing temperatures. Used in conjunction with a ceramic grill which insulates well, you’ll use less total heat to cook your food which means moister meats. Burns longer for better slow cooking!

Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal burns longer thanks to the hardwood used to make it. Also, you’ll get the right mix of fast-starting small pieces and long-burning large pieces that will allow you to cook low and slow for extended periods of time. Other lump charcoals offer too many cheaper small pieces and not enough larger pieces.

Costs less per use. Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal costs less per use because the hardwood charcoal burns hotter and the larger pieces burn longer. If you close the vents in your grill when done, you’ll also be able to re-use partially burned charcoal pieces.

  • 20 pounds of 100 percent natural lump charcoal
  • Can burn up to 18 hours
  • Reusable up to three times
  • Made from a blend of hardwood - Guayacan, Guayaibi, Mistal, and White Quebracho

User questions & answers

Question: So is this a 20lbs bag
Answer: Yes it is a 20lb bag shipped in a box
Question: Can you use this with other grills
Answer: I don't see why not, assuming you are talking about a charcoal grill. You don't need to use quite as much, as this burns longer, hotter and with less ash then traditional charcoal.
Question: Is this charcoal sustainably sourced or from virgin forest? I've read their website and packaging and it doesn't say
Answer: I am unsure but it is not from virgin timber as I doubt there is any virgin wood to produce this charcoal
Question: Why so expensive
Answer: They have to take into account shipping a large box that weighs 20lbs. If you have a Costco account you can find 30lbs for same price but convenience vs price at this point.
