13 best cowboy lump charcoals

Cowboy lump charcoal is a type of charcoal that is commonly used for grilling and outdoor cooking. Here are some key points about cowboy lump charcoal:

  1. Natural Hardwood: Cowboy lump charcoal is typically made from natural hardwood, such as oak, hickory, or mesquite. It is considered a more natural and traditional option compared to briquettes, which may contain additives.

  2. No Binders or Fillers: One of the advantages of lump charcoal is that it usually contains no binders or fillers. This means that you're getting pure hardwood, which can enhance the flavor of the food being grilled.

  3. Quick Ignition: Lump charcoal is known for its quick ignition. It lights faster than briquettes, making it convenient for those who want to start grilling quickly.

  4. High Heat: Cowboy lump charcoal tends to burn at a higher temperature than briquettes. This high heat can be beneficial for achieving a good sear on meats and providing an authentic grilling experience.

  5. Distinct Flavor: The type of hardwood used in cowboy lump charcoal can impart a distinct flavor to the food being cooked. For example, mesquite charcoal may give a smoky and robust flavor to the grilled items.

  6. Minimal Ash Production: Lump charcoal generally produces less ash compared to briquettes. This can be advantageous for those who want to minimize cleanup after grilling.

  7. Natural Variability: Since cowboy lump charcoal is made from natural hardwood, there can be some variability in the size and shape of the charcoal pieces. Some users appreciate the uniqueness of each batch, while others may prefer more uniformity.

  8. Versatility: Cowboy lump charcoal is suitable for various grilling applications, including direct grilling, indirect grilling, and smoking. Its versatility makes it a popular choice among outdoor cooking enthusiasts.

  9. Wood Species Variations: Different brands or batches of cowboy lump charcoal may use different hardwood species or combinations, leading to variations in flavor profiles.Users may experiment with different brands to find the flavor they prefer.

  10. Storage Considerations: It's essential to store lump charcoal in a dry place to prevent it from absorbing moisture, which can affect its performance. Airtight containers or sealed bags are commonly used for storage.

Remember, the choice between lump charcoal and briquettes often comes down to personal preference and the specific requirements of the grilling or smoking process. Some people appreciate the natural and robust flavor that lump charcoal imparts to their grilled dishes, while others may prefer the convenience and consistency of briquettes.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you light lump charcoal
Answer: Do not use lighter fluid. I used solid fire starters. Found it takes two in different locations to get the charcoal hot quicker. I recently started using the Bison-Airlighter to get it lighted faster.
Question: Can this be used in a portable grill for tailgating
Answer: Yes, as long as it’s a charcoal grill. This charcoal burns hotter & longer than Kingsford brickett charcoal.
Question: What type of wood is in this
Answer: I really don't know but I can say that I did not like it - it burns very rapidly. I prefer briquettes because they produce a controlled heat with a steady burn. I tried the stuff two or three times then used the remaining wood as kindling to start my wood stove. Waste of money in my opinion .

Kamado Joe KJ-Char Big Block XL Lump Charcoal, 20-Pound, Black

Kamado Joe

Based on 1 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal is made from real trees so it burns clean and gives you a robust wood-fire flavor. Some other brands are made from scrap furniture or processed wood. This means less wood-fire flavor. Burns hotter for moister meats!

Because Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal is made from hardwood, it burns hotter. This allows you to achieve steak- searing temperatures. Used in conjunction with a ceramic grill which insulates well, you’ll use less total heat to cook your food which means moister meats. Burns longer for better slow cooking!

Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal burns longer thanks to the hardwood used to make it. Also, you’ll get the right mix of fast-starting small pieces and long-burning large pieces that will allow you to cook low and slow for extended periods of time. Other lump charcoals offer too many cheaper small pieces and not enough larger pieces.

Costs less per use. Kamado Joe 100% Natural Lump Charcoal costs less per use because the hardwood charcoal burns hotter and the larger pieces burn longer. If you close the vents in your grill when done, you’ll also be able to re-use partially burned charcoal pieces.

User questions & answers

Question: So is this a 20lbs bag
Answer: Yes it is a 20lb bag shipped in a box
Question: Can you use this with other grills
Answer: I don't see why not, assuming you are talking about a charcoal grill. You don't need to use quite as much, as this burns longer, hotter and with less ash then traditional charcoal.
Question: Is this charcoal sustainably sourced or from virgin forest? I've read their website and packaging and it doesn't say
Answer: I am unsure but it is not from virgin timber as I doubt there is any virgin wood to produce this charcoal
Question: Why so expensive
Answer: They have to take into account shipping a large box that weighs 20lbs. If you have a Costco account you can find 30lbs for same price but convenience vs price at this point.

User questions & answers

Question: Why is this twice as expensive then buying it in the store? It is normally $21.00 for a 20 lbs bag. Am I reading this correct
Answer: If you can buy 20 lbs. for $21.00, Buy It!!
Question: How large are the lumps of charcoal
Answer: Due to the high carbonization, Rockwood is brittle and breaks down with agitation. Just like potato chips, it is all screened at the plant, so any small pieces and dust occur after bagging. So, it varies depending on the carrier's handling. Contrary to other brands' advertising, huge and dense chunks of "charcoal" are not a good thing. The reason they are huge and dense is because they are still full of wood fiber and water. Anything charcoal that is properly carbonized should be able to be broken apart by hand. If you have to use a hammer, you're paying for wood and water in a CHARCOAL product sold by weight. Buying local is going to be your best bet if you're looking for a highly carbonized charcoal that has the largest chunks possible.
Question: Why is this more than twice the cost of other retailers of this product
Answer: Shipping.....it's large and heavy. Half of that goes to UPS or Fedex. Stores buy multiple pallets at a time, much more economical to ship that way vs. by the bag.
Question: How many lbs are each bag
Answer: Each bag is 20-lbs.
