User questions & answers
Question: | Why is there no chimney to exhaust smoke. how does smoke exit |
Answer: | Hello! Based on our extensive research and testing, chimneys create uneven heat, and only have negative effects on the performance of pellet grills. There are a series of vents along the back of the lid which allows the smoke to exit the unit, and provide much more even heat, and better overall cooking results. Thanks! |
Question: | How quickly does it get to 600 degrees |
Answer: | Hello! Our SmokeFire grills reach 600 F in about 15 minutes. Thanks! |
Question: | Can you smoke foods at a set temperature under 200? If so how low |
Answer: | Hello! At launch, SmokeFire units will only be able to go as low as 200 F, but there are plans for a "Smoke Boost" feature, that will be rolled out via an update later, which should alter the low temperature range. Thanks! |
Question: | What is the margin of error in holding temperature? i.e. If I set it at 250 deg. how far above or below will it vary over time |
Answer: | I have to agree with Jeff. The display of the set/actual temperature is displayed only in 5 degree increments and does not change from the set point until the variance is 20 degrees or more. I have gone so far as to mount a second probe within an inch of the control probe, and the difference is anywhere from 0 to 15 degrees (or more) |

Answer: | Hi! These wood chips are for outdoor use only. Thanks! |
Question: | Are these actually chips or are they chunks |
Answer: | They are chips, not chunks. A typical size might be 1/2 inch wide by 1 inches long, and perhaps an eighth to a quarter inch thick. Some are larger, some are smaller. |
Question: | Hey, the same size flavor bagged is $3.99 on the weber site. why is this bag listed so expensive? in fact, three 3x more |
Answer: | Could be an individual seller outside of Weber???? Just my thought. |
Question: | Can these be added to a bonfire for smell |
Answer: | Hello! Technically, yes, you could add them to a bonfire, but the smell given off would likely go unnoticed, as it would be overpowered by the other wood that's burning. These wood chips are meant for adding flavor to food that's being grilled or smoked. Thanks! |

Question: | How would you compare the performance between 14.5 an 18.5? same amount of charcoal? same amount of time to cook? any diff in temp control |
Answer: | Have used the 14.5 a few times now (tri-tip, meatloaf, two hot-n-fast cooks with pork butts)...It's a pretty cool little cooker. Have several years experience cooking with a tamale steamer converted smokey joe. Thus far, I'd have to say it cooks similarly to those (with the added bonus of a water pan and door). It holds less charcoal than the 18.5, for sure. For the hot-n-fast pork butt cooks I had to lift off top/center sections and refuel...not too difficult, but something I don't have to do with the 18.5. Haven't really tried a true low-n-slow cook yet...can't say how long cook time might be under those conditions (have had good 6 hour plus burn times on the converted smokey joes). When I cook hot-n-fast, to be honest, I just let 'er rip...this little guy gets plenty hot, plenty fast. Obviously, there's less space in the 14.5, you can get a butt on each grate and that's about it. I don't use water when cooking hot-n-fast either, but the water pan is much smaller than the 18.5. I think I'm going to enjoy cooking on this, but If I had to choose one...I might choose the 18.5 (increased charcoal/cooking capacity). Lucky me, I've got both and a couple of 22.5's!! Hope this helps. |
Question: | Am struggling with which size Weber Smokey Mountain Cooker to get - 18.5 inch or 22.5 inch. Can you tell me the advantages to both. Thank you |
Answer: | I have owned the 22.5" for a year and I can tell you that it is worth the purchase. It can hold any piece of meat that you can think of putting on it and it stays fired up for all smoke jobs. I have smoked whole turkeys, briskets, pork butts, chicken, and burgers/brats/dogs. I would say I've put roughly 25 smokes on it and I have never had any issues with it. I also smoke for 4 people generally. The 18.5" is going to be exactly the same thing except in a smaller form. It may not have the room you are looking for if you get a large cut. I have seen a lot of comments saying that the 22.5" uses more fuel and while that is correct it doesn't have to be filled to the brim for a smoke. I normally use a half ring and if I need a few more coals I just throw them on. Never had an issue with it. I would rather have the size and not need it than regret not getting the extra room. If this is well taken care of it could last for several decades so what is the big deal with spending an extra $100. Just my 2 cents. |
Question: | What is the country of orgin for this Smoker |
Answer: | 8th best country in the world! The United States. |

User questions & answers
Question: | why can't you use them indoors |
Answer: | We have one and it produces quite a bit of heat. My guess is Weber doesn't want the liability and it has never been approved for indoor use. |
Question: | Is it 110V or 220V |
Answer: | the unit is 120/110 voltP.S. the greatest little grill !!!!!! |
Question: | Lining the bottom with aluminum foil to make cleanup easier? I just got one of these. Any reason not to |
Answer: | I have lined the bottom removable liner with foil. That tends to make things messy. I agree with the idea to just wipe it clean, remove the pan and use soap and water. Also, after reading Weber's suggestions, they do not recommend lining either the drip pan or reflective liner with foil. |
Question: | I am looking at the q2400 and q1400. they both have the same wattage. does the q1400 heat up quicker than the bigger one |
Answer: | Q1400 has 8.25 watts per square inch. Q2400 has 5.5 watts per square inch. Math doesn't lie. 1400 is awesome and will get to and hold sear temperature. 2400 not so much. It is not a matter of which will heat up quicker, but the little guy will hold the heat thru the process. This is a case where smaller is better. Unless you have a large crew, the 1400 is the ticket. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used with a propane weber bbq |
Answer: | This is not designed to take camping. It's a metal box with stone inserts in the oven chamber. In other words it's heavy and not designed for portability. I would be concerned about breaking the stones. |
Question: | Do you need to use the BBQ System Grate with this or can you put it right on top of the regular cooking grill |
Answer: | About 30 min to heat up. |
Question: | What is the diameter with and without the handles |
Answer: | I have a Weber grill and I leave the flavor bars in place. |
Question: | Can you use the stone in the oven |
Answer: | I do. I read the product information as well as a lot of reviews when I bought the box and it seemed to me that the company recommendations against closing the lid where the kind of thing companies recommend given the potential problems from different grill configurations, careless users, etc. It absolutely does work and allows me to get another 100+ degrees in internal temperature. Now that I can get the box to a nose over 800 degrees (approaching Neapolitan pizza range) I have determined that the optimal temperature for charring and elasticity is in the 725-750 degree range. Like anything fueled by fossil fuels you need to be careful and pay attention, but I have done this 8-10 times now with no detrimental impact to the unit itself. Closing the lid was the difference between good and great pizza. BTW I'm using this with a Weber Genesis 4 burner (fourth "sear station" burner between burners 1 and 2) and I turn on all four burners. I had thought the unbalanced burner configuration might cause the left side of the box to get hotter, but according to my infrared thermometer that does not appear to be the case. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use the cedar planks, on an electric smoker grill |
Answer: | Hi, yes! You can absolutely use these cedar planks on an electric, gas, charcoal, or pellet grill model. Thanks! |
Question: | Can you use these in the oven |
Answer: | I've never used in the oven just on the grill but I think it will definetly work, but first you have to soak the planks in water for a full day. |
Question: | Are they single use |
Answer: | Q. Are grilling planks reusable? A. Yes, but we don't recommend it. Technically, if the grilling plank is still in good shape after the initial use it may be reused. Keep in mind that it will take on the flavor of whatever you grilled on it, and some of the essential oils from the wood will be used up from the first round of grilling. If you are grilling something that requires a long cook time, the plank will be too charred to reuse. Tip: If you cook using the "indirect method" your grilling planks will have the best chance of being reusable. For charcoal grills simply set the coals on one side of the grill and the grilling plank on the other side. Likewise, for gas grills light one side, usually the front, and place the plank on the other (back) side. If you are planking in the oven, your plank will be in much better condition after use than if you are planking on the grill. |
Question: | Does this fit a whole side/fillet of salmon |
Answer: | Yes, the larger sized plank does fit most whole sides. Just make sure you check the length & width of the plank before you place your purchase. I, also, have the smaller sized & find them to be perfect for 2 servings. |
