User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used to charge lipo battery bank . I need to set the bulk and float at 14 volts
Answer: Morningstar controllers are manufactured in a fully automated world-class ISO 9001 facility in Taiwan.
Question: Can this be program battery type without a meter/screen
Answer: I am using a 100watt panel made by Global ICP. Is your panel 12volt output? It must be for this charger. The actual output will be higher but not over 24, which is the next stage up. My panel puts out 19.5 volts directly. If you have a muilti meter, check the output voltage if you do not know.Best to look around and get a book on solar. Plenty available. Learning first will help prevent mishaps or damage to your expensive equipment.
Question: Will this control work with reliable 4000w solar power inverter 12vdc to 120v ac off grid pure sine wave inverter with 5-160 watt panels (800w total
Answer: Well its a 10 amp controller at 12 volts so if you use ohms law, Volts Times Amps, says about 120 Watts. I have got 2 60 watt panels connected to mine and it works fine.
Question: What is the difference beween this controller and the $541 morningstar ts-mppt
Answer: I'm afraid several have misunderstood the question. Without a low-voltage disconnect, the load connections on the controller are provided merely for connection convenience. It should be the same as connecting your load directly to the battery. There is no low-voltage protection either way. Unless you purchase the unit that contains the LVD

User questions & answers

Question: Can I add a 12v 10amp charger to my load? Should I connect it to the solar terminal, the battery or load
Answer: You can charge 12, 24, 48 volt battery banks with this charge controller. Refer to the manual for the dip switch settings. The voltage of your panels does not matter when configuring your array. What matters is either the aggregate amperage or Volts over circuit (Voc). This depends on whether you have your panels connected in series or parallel (pos to neg or pos to pos and neg to neg). For example: for an array in series you connect pos to neg and add the Voc until you have a string under the limit of the charge controller. In parallel you connect pos to pos and neg to neg and add the max rated amps per panel until you get a string under the limit. Refer to the label on your panel to calculate your Voc or amps. Use the Maximum amperage setting to add your amps together to make sure that you stay under the limit. The max amps is based on the max amount of amperage produced per panel on a perfectly sunny, cold day (Heat effects efficiency of the panel). I'm running a combination of parallel/series strings on two charge controllers in parallel (yes you can put your controllers in parallel also, this just means you have two controllers connected to your battery bank. Make sure they have the same dip switches set.). I have panels with 44 Voc and 5 amps. The most panels I can run per charge controller are 2 strings of 3 series parallel. Hope this helps.
Question: Is this a photo of a different model? Your description says that the item for sale has an lcd monitor on it. Thanks for all your help, guys
Answer: Yes that is fine as long as you don't put more than 150VDC into each controller. Thanks, ML SOLAR
Question: Does it provide a trickle charge
Answer: Maybe... An appropriately sized power supply that has an AC input (from grid or genny), with a DC output (to charge controller) could be used instead of solar panels, so long as the power supply is within the operating parameters of the charge controller (50V to 150V) DC.
Question: Made in
Answer: Yes that is no problem. Thanks ML SOLAR

User questions & answers

Question: Made in
Answer: This controller stopped working after 2 months with 40w panel. I replaced it with a $7 unit that looked very similar that I found on ebay.Does not have Delphi connectors, which I consider a useless expense.
Question: I'm a novice. How would this item be used in conjunction with an ALEKO® 90W 90-Watt Monocrystalline Solar Panel? Thanks
Answer: In my application I put a fuse between the BATTERY and the load, not between the panel and the controller. Solar panels are limited in their current output and will generally not be damaged by a short circuit, but a battery can output a very high current level if shorted.
Question: What's the maximum size panel I can use with this controller
Answer: As long as your dual batteries are wired to produce 12 volts, the controller will work. The controller is only rated to handle 4.5 amps from the solar panel, so you are limited in the size of the panel you can use. My SG-4 has worked well with a 50 watt panel for over a year maintaining the 12 volt battery in a pop-up camper used in Colorado mountains.
Question: Do I need to run my load through the controller, or can it go directly to battery? What are the advantages of running through the controller
Answer: Do you have a lithium cell? or a Lithium Battery?(a battery is two or more cells)the difference is important. To get 12v equivalent, you need multiple lithium cells. This could work with four (4ea) lithium CELLS, specifically lithium-iron-phosphate cells(for instance), which have a nominal voltage around 3.6v, which you would need to balance well before-hand; this is assuming you are not loading heavily or discharging to a low SOC. (4ea cells x 3.6v)=14.4v, considered fully-charged for sla. So you would connect your four cells (each beginning at

User questions & answers

Question: can I use a 24 volt panel to charge a 12 volt system
Answer: No the display is not back lit but is very legible.
Question: An I use 2 of these to charge 12 155a hr. batteries with 11 solar panels in 24v system
Answer: Yes.
Question: Can I use this unit to charge my four 225 Ah batteries with grid power or when thats down my 5 KW jenny, no panels for now just battery charging
Answer: I thought I had seen a recommended input wattage but I didn't retrieve it. But, the idea of the controller is to limit the charge to protect the battery and keep things safe. The rated wattage, eg: mine is 30amps, has to do with the load side. I have 5 100w panels feeding the controller. They are not aimed ideally and typically I currently only see a charge voltage of between 6 and 10 amps. If I had more sun or fewer trees in the way I shouldn't need as many panels to collect the same ampere value. So, install enough batteries to cover your daily use, get a heavy enough controller to cover how much you draw at a time, and add enough panels to replace the amount you use. The controller will limit the charge to protect your battery and stop the flow when it is fully charged. I use 4 /12v deep cycle batteries and run lights (the 7w screw in bulbs in an ordinary fixture works perfectly on the ceiling) task lighting over the counters, laptop and USB, plus a 1000w inverter for the stove ignition. Oh, and a waterpump. Of course the short to your question is. However many it takes.
Question: The specification on the manual says max of 3200w for a 48v system. Can I put 1000w and efficiently charge my 48v battery bank and later upgrade. Tx
Answer: Yes, it would work. This solar controller supports Sealed, Gel, Flooded, LiFePO4, Li(NiCoMn)O2 battery.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this unit offer a low voltage shut off? If it does, is it adjustable
Answer: You would want to match your fuse rating to the wire you are using to make that connection.
Question: Should I put a 20 amp fuse between controller and battery
Answer: No. this one does not equalize
Question: Does it equalize the battery
Answer: I believe your panel is actually a 24-Volt panel! I believe that you MUST have the 24-Volt Morningstar model to use this voltage! I believe the panel you want is "SL-20-24v". There's a couple models of this Morningstar product, to be triply sure, contact Morningstar OR download the user manual of the sl-20-24v
Question: Will the ss-20L work with a 1soltech reflection series -60 cell blk 245w 60- cell Monocrystaline modules
Answer: Amazing that Lithium Batteries are not mentioned in the description (shame on the seller) but if you google the manufacturer website it does say "Lithium support provided" in regards to this product. I am assuming this is LiFePO4 support NOT classic Lithium ION support. The charging requirements are different.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it has the Delphi connector. Is it look like the RA-9 used for Powerfilm
Answer: No, You can not add another charge controller to the load side of the Prostar. You need to connect directly to the battery.
Question: Do you fuse the input side from the solar panel? 5A mini fuse
Answer: The ps 30 in this photo does not have the lcd display. the one with the display cost about $60.00 more.
Question: Will this controller work with dual battery setup? Any potential problems
Answer: Terry; The ProStar 30 accepts voltage in from only solar panel(s); so ifyour question is "does this plug in to 115 volts to trickle charge?"then the answer is "No." However, this unit has a microprocessorbased control circuitry that senses your battery bank's status and1.) charges full-blast (using all available solar input) providing a maximum voltageUP to the point where no over-voltage damage occurs to your batteries.(It uses pulse-width-modulation to keep the voltage going to batteries underthe max).then 2.) When the batteries reach a full-charge, this solar controller cranks down toprovide a "float" voltage. This, I think, is what you probably wondering about.
Question: Will this work on all batteries? I have a lithium phosphate battery
Answer: I just received the ProStar-30, and it's Assembled in Taiwan.

Question: Is the remote display available alone?. My one doesn’t work anymore
Answer: I run five 300 watt panels with mine, works great here in central america....my inverter is just 1500 watts but the controller just cares for the battery bank. It equalizes at 15.7, and has been pulled down to 11 volts..never a hickup. I had to put rf chokes on my ham radio power leads...got a bit of noise. RF chokes are cheap...buy a box and put them on your power cords if needed.
Question: I'd like to see a PICTURE! The picture is of a cable that appears completely unrelated to this item
Answer: This one uses a regulation technique called Pulse Width Modulation while the MPPT-60 is basically a D.C.-to-D.C. Voltage converter. The MPPT-60 supports a wider range of PV array Voltages and alllows the PV array Voltage to operate at its optimum Voltage of a slight improvement in power output. How much? Usually about 3 to 8%. However, if the PV array voltage is reasonably close to the inverter and or battery array voltage, PWM is more efficient method than D.C.-D.C. conversion. Why? Because PWM cuts through power to the output like a switch, while a D.C.-to-D.C. converter converts electricity to magnetism and then back to electricity again. I was using an MPPT charge controller on my 5,000W PV system. The MPPT charge controller at full load was consuming 550 Watts and was quite hit to the touch. The advantage I was getting by letting the PV array operate at its MPPT optimum Voltage was only an increase in output 230 Wattts. I switched to two Tristar 60 PWM charge controllers that together cost a lot less than The MPPT charge controller I was using. Both of my Tristar 60s consume less than 45 Watts at full load. The cooling fins are always at room temperature. So for me, the Tristar 60s were the most efficient and cost effective solution. My MPPT charge controller kept failing ( brand other than Morningstar). After the third time, I gave up and ended up with a solution that is better in every way including reliability. I operate my TS-60 in 48V mode. My PV array open circuit Voltage is 72 Volts. The TS-60 supports open circuit Voltages as high as 108V.
