14 best killers for lawns
Killers for lawns, also known as weed killers or herbicides, are chemical substances used to control or eliminate unwanted vegetation in lawns and gardens. These products are commonly used by gardeners and homeowners to maintain the health and appearance of their lawns. There are different types of weed killers available, and they work in various ways to target and kill weeds, moss, and other unwanted plants.
Here are some key points about killers for lawns:
Types of Weed Killers:
- Selective Herbicides: These weed killers are designed to target specific types of weeds while leaving desirable plants, like grass, unharmed. They are commonly used in lawns to control broadleaf weeds without harming the grass.
- Non-Selective Herbicides: These herbicides kill all plants they come into contact with. They are often used to clear areas of all vegetation, such as preparing a new garden bed or eliminating all plant growth in a paved area.
Modes of Action:
- Contact Herbicides: These herbicides kill plants on contact, typically by damaging the foliage. They are effective for annual weeds but may require multiple applications for perennial weeds.
- Systemic Herbicides: Systemic herbicides are absorbed by the plant and then translocated throughout the plant, killing it from the inside. This type of herbicide is often more effective against perennial weeds.
Common Active Ingredients:
- Glyphosate: A widely used non-selective herbicide that is effective against a broad range of weeds.
- 2,4-D: A selective herbicide used to control broadleaf weeds in lawns.
- Dicamba: Another selective herbicide effective against broadleaf weeds.
- Sulfonylureas: A group of herbicides that inhibit weed growth by affecting the plant's metabolism.
Application Methods:
- Weed killers can be applied in various forms, including liquid sprays, granules, or concentrated solutions that need to be diluted with water. The choice of application method depends on the type of product and the target weeds.
Safety Precautions:
- It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions when using weed killers to ensure safety for both people and the environment.
- Protective clothing, such as gloves and eye protection, should be worn when handling herbicides.
- Keep pets and children away from treated areas until it's safe.
Environmental Impact:
- The use of herbicides should be done responsibly to minimize their impact on the environment, including water sources and non-target plants.
Alternatives:
- Some gardeners opt for organic or natural weed control methods, such as manual weeding, mulching, or using vinegar-based herbicides, to avoid the use of chemical herbicides.
In summary, killers for lawns, or weed killers, are a range of products designed to control unwanted plants in lawns and gardens. They come in various types, with different modes of action and safety considerations, and their choice depends on the specific needs of the user and the type of weeds they need to control.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this product kill wild onions?, if not what does |
Answer: | There is no residual for GroundClear Weed and Grass Killer, so once the weeds have died you should be able to replant. |
Question: | Does this product gave any fertilizer in it? I recently applied weed and feed and had an unexpected thunderstorm wash it away and need an alternative |
Answer: | I couldn’t get it to kill anything |
Question: | will it kill quackgrass |
Answer: | as long as the grass is established, it should in no way affect it. if you lay down a barrier of pre-emergent and then sow grass seed, it would then prevent the grass from germinating properly, if at all. |
Question: | will it kill bind weed |
Answer: | What does the label say? For southern lawns (I live in Orlando, FL), during the summer months only, I use Celsius WG. Very expensive, but a little goes a long way. Mixes at 1 tsp per gallon of water at the standard rate. And this stuff really, really, really, works. It is the only thing I have found that will kill crab grass. |

Step 1:
Shake container well before using. Connect a garden hose to the sprayer nozzle. Make sure switch is fully forward in the "off" position.

User questions & answers
Question: | How long before you see results? I used it on an end of hose sprayer, and not seen a change in 2+ weeks. Thx |
Answer: | You will need to spot treat the weeds as well before seeing results. Use a one gallon hand pump sprayer with a few glugs of the chemical, then fill the rest with water. Good luck! |
Question: | can I use it in an area behind my garage that has poison ivy |
Answer: | This will work well with most broadleaf weeds, including poison ivy. Watch in a few months: Poison ivy has a strong root system that might survive first application of herbicide. Glyphosphate will do the job too. It will kill anything green. |
Question: | I understand that this product is also recognized as being "Agent Orange |
Answer: | It was half of the concoction. The other was 2,4,5-t which is now a restricted use product and can only be bought with a license. |
Question: | Is this product safe for use on St. Augustine lawns |
Answer: | 2, 4-D is a generic broad leaf weed killer found in almost all broadleaf herbicides. Since St. Augustine is a grass (and not a broadleaf), 2,4-D will not kill it. However, if used again and again in a particular location, it will eventually kill the St. Augustine which is what I experienced in a small patch which had oxalis (yellow sorrel) weed. I later found out from Texas A&M that oxalis, albeit a broadleaf, is very, very hard to kill since it has underground rhizomes which regenerate the weed even if it appears to have been killed. Their recommendation for a broadleaf weedkiller a homeowner could use (i.e., you don't have to have a applicator's license) was $64.99 for 2 ozs, so I passed. Think I'll try to hand dig my oxalis. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I want to put this in a small, hand held sprayer to hit small spots and not have to drag a hose around. What is the desired concentration in water |
Answer: | 3200 sq ft. Active ingredient is Triclopyr, trimethylamine salt 8% 5.74% Triclopyr acid equivalent (0.49 lb / gal) |
Question: | This or Sedgehammer for Bermuda |
Answer: | Not recommended. Many grass seedlings are very sensitive to herbicides depending upon the variety. In my experiencethat herbicide will kill mature red fescu in the recommended concentration and make perennial rye grass look sickly. Establishedbluegrass other grasses will tolerate it. Seedlings of most any grass will be more sensitive to herbicides and fertilizers. Wait untilthe seedlings are a couple of months old before applying herbicide for the clover. |
Question: | How quickly can you see results for the nutsedge |
Answer: | I am not a Vine reviewer and cannot answer your question. Sorry |
Question: | How long should I wait until a second application? Wait until the nut grass starts turning yellow or just wait six weeks |
Answer: | Yes, this stuff works great on a large variety of weeds. It is the only thing I have found that kills wild violet. It was easy to use but it didn't cover as much area as the bottle says it will cover. That was probably because I was overspraying. Some weeds are so resistant that I had to spray them a second time 2 weeks later. Now I have a weed-free lawn and that is saying a lot. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this biodegradable |
Answer: | I question your competency. Yes it is biodegradable |
Question: | How often is reapplication needed |
Answer: | Here in Western PA we have been having some serious rain issues. I don't doubt the manufacturers specs on the package about using the product every ninety days. However, in my case? About three days after application we had RAIN. The resulting plethora of gnats, skeeter's, flies, no-see-ums" leads me to doubt the product was invented by Noah and could survive a flood. So, if the rain is scheduled to leave for at least a week. I will re-apply. I have had great success with Ortho products in the past. |
Question: | Can pets be in the yard |
Answer: | I put it out in my yard and let my dogs loose in the yard couple of hours later and they were fine. I also have a few stray cats that were go though my yard and lay around in my yard and they were fine also. |
Question: | Does this kill millipedes? We figured in we got infested outside after buying garden plants at one of the big box garden stores |
Answer: | More than likely, centipedes are listed on the bag among what it kills so i would imagine it does. |
Product features
Ants
Ants are common pests throughout the world. They are a nuisance, largely because of the annoyance caused by their presence - constructing mounds in the lawn or invading the home from the yard in search of food.
Fleas
Adult fleas are no larger than 1/8 inch long. They are reddish-brown, wingless insects that are laterally compressed, so they look as if they are walking on edge.
Ticks
Although ticks are commonly thought of as insects, they are actually arachnids like spiders and mites. They have 4 pairs of legs and no antennae. They lie in wait for a passing deer, pet, or person to walk near the shrub or grass they are perched on.
Spiders
Spiders can be found throughout the country. If you have the occasional fly or gnat in the house, chances are you’ll also have spiders in the house. Spiders live on bugs, but not enough to be considered for pest control.
Chinch Bugs
Adult chinch bugs are about one-fifth of an inch long and black with white wings folded over their backs. Chinch bugs feed on many kinds of lawn grasses, but St. Augustine grass and Zoysia grass are favorites.
Cutworms
If you see spots of brown grass and birds pecking at your lawn, you could be facing a cutworm infestation.
Mole Crickets
Mole crickets can be twice as long as their singing cousins - and their tunneling can ruin your lawn.
Sod Webworms
Sod webworms are the larvae of lawn moths. They live in the root level of your lawn and munch up the grass leaves. At root level, you’ll see small white tubes made of silky web. At dusk, you might even see the worms themselves.

Question: | Can you refill the sprayer with the concentrate |
Answer: | About two weeks to total kill, turns brown after just a few days. Worked well, no more nutsedge in my yard. I did have to go back over a few spots since you do have to be sure to spray the individual plants for it to work. Nothing else would work. Would get it again if needed. |

Question: | How well does this work on poison ivy |
Answer: | a stronger solution works well |
Question: | How well does this work on poison ivy |
Answer: | Surprisingly, this worked on most of my simple weeds, I do not have poison ivy to kill but my first thought is this is not strong enough to eliminate that tuff invasive weed. I believe one of the popular brands actually makes a poison ivy killer. I googled "can vinegar kill poison ivy" and the answer is yes, white vinegar will kill poison ivy, though it might take a few days to notice. Fill your garden sprayer with straight, undiluted white vinegar and take aim at the poison ivy leaves and crowns. Other sites say to heat the solution with salt and add dish soap. All the articles mention it will take time, possibly a week and you might need to reapply. So maybe this would work but probably not as quick as you would like and not in one application. I would buy something better that works faster. |
Question: | Can you use this on artificial turf |
Answer: | Hello, Thank you for your question. Eco Garden Pro is non selective, and will work to eliminate all weeds, grass, and moss varieties. It should be perfectly safe for your synthetic astroturf. If you are concerned, apply to a smaller area first to spot test the product. |
