12 best citrus plant foods

Citrus plant foods are specialized fertilizers designed to meet the specific nutritional needs of citrus trees and plants. These fertilizers are formulated to provide essential nutrients that citrus plants require for healthy growth and fruit production. Here's what you need to know about citrus plant foods:

  1. Nutrient Requirements: Citrus trees have distinct nutrient requirements compared to other plants. They need a balanced supply of macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) as well as micronutrients (such as iron, magnesium, and zinc) to thrive.

  2. N-P-K Ratio: Citrus fertilizers typically have a specific N-P-K (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) ratio, such as 6-4-6 or 8-3-9. These ratios are designed to provide the right balance of nutrients for healthy foliage and fruit development.

  3. Micronutrients: In addition to the major N-P-K nutrients, citrus plant foods often contain micronutrients like iron and manganese. These trace elements are crucial for preventing nutrient deficiencies and ensuring proper chlorophyll production.

  4. Slow-Release Formulas: Some citrus fertilizers come in slow-release formulations. These gradually release nutrients over an extended period, reducing the risk of over-fertilizing and providing a consistent supply of nutrients to the plants.

  5. Application Timing: Citrus plant foods should be applied at specific times during the growing season. It's common to feed citrus trees in late winter or early spring to support new growth and again in late spring or early summer to promote fruit development.

  6. Soil pH: Citrus trees prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil pH levels. Some citrus fertilizers are formulated to help maintain or adjust the soil pH if necessary.

  7. Organic vs. Synthetic: Citrus plant foods are available in both organic and synthetic forms. Organic options are derived from natural sources, while synthetic ones are manufactured chemically. The choice between organic and synthetic depends on your gardening preferences and environmental concerns.

  8. Container Gardening: If you're growing citrus trees in containers, it's essential to use a citrus-specific fertilizer that addresses the unique nutrient requirements of potted plants.

  9. Dosing Instructions: Always follow the dosing instructions provided on the fertilizer label. Over-fertilizing can harm citrus trees, so it's crucial to apply the right amount.

  10. Watering: Proper watering is also essential for citrus plants. Be sure to water consistently and deeply to ensure the nutrients from the fertilizer are absorbed effectively.

  11. Pruning: Regular pruning of citrus trees can help improve air circulation and sunlight exposure, which, combined with proper fertilization, can contribute to healthier and more fruitful trees.

In summary, citrus plant foods are specialized fertilizers designed to provide the specific nutrients that citrus trees and plants require for optimal growth and fruit production. When used correctly in conjunction with proper care and maintenance, they can help you grow healthy, productive citrus trees in your garden or patio.

Delivers long-term benefits without chemicals. Jobe's Biozome is a unique & proprietary blend of beneficial microorganisms Archaea, mycorrhizal fungi & healthy bacteria. Archaea is a recently identified microorganism found in some of the planet's most extreme environments, such as hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. In garden applications, scientists have discovered that these microbes actually clean the soil, returning it to a healthier, more natural state. Jobe's Biozome contains a proprietary species of Archaea that quickly breaks down complex hydrocarbons & minerals into basic nutrients & trace elements that plants readily absorb. Mycorrhizal fungi expands the surface-absorbing area of the roots by 100 to 1, 000 times, sending out filaments that act as extensions of the plant's root system, helping plants absorb more water & nutrients. In return, the fungi receive essential sugars & other compounds from the plant roots, fueling their own growth. Finally, the healthy bacterial strain in Biozome improves the soil structure & quality, keeping nutrients near the roots. Jobe's Organics Fruit & Citrus Granular Fertilizer is OMRI listed & may be used in certified organic food production according to the USDA national organic program. User questions & answers

Question: What is the solution (NPK) on this
Answer: There is no such listing as "NPK" on the ingredient percentages
Question: For a potted meyer lemon tree, how much should I use
Answer: My lemon tree is only about 2 ft. tall and has been inside all winter. I added 1 3/4C. Jobe's fertilizer and watered it well. that was two days ago and it appears to be doing very well. Because my tree has been inside I have been misting the leaves every day.It had about 50 blossoms on it and is very healthy. I hope to plant it in the ground in April or May.,
Question: What is the percentage of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium in the fertilizer
Answer: This fertilizer is 4-4-4. The first number indicates 4% nitrogen, second 4% phosphorus and the third 4% potassium. The best way is to incorporate 4 pounds of 4-4-4 per 100 sq.ft. prior to planting. This kind of fertilizer is called "all purpose" fertilizer. My recommendation is that you analyze your soil with an inexpensive test kit (Amazon has them). Then decide what you want to grow and research on-line what the optimum fertilization ranges are for your specific plants or vegetables. Then, if you incorporate the all purpose fertilizer into you soil before planting you can spot supplement with specific fertilizers as needed. There are many organic solutions available to you. The great thing about Jobe's -09526 is that it is organic so you will be starting off the right way. Lots of luck with your plants.
Question: what are the actual ingredients
Answer: Protein Hydrolysate from feather meal, bone meal, composted poultry manure, sulfate of potash and various bacteria, endomycorrhizae, ectomycorrhzae and archaea.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used for pomegranate plants
Answer: Pomegranate plants or trees can use this fertilizer, since their needs are similar, but I read that a 8-8-8 formula would be better formulation. This fertilizer ,Miracle Grow Shake'n'feed for citrus is 13-7-13.
Question: Has anyone used this product on avocado trees
Answer: I am a science teacher and have grown many Avocados from a pit, and have only used this product. Many of my trees are 1-4 years old and doing better than expected.
Question: What is the NPK ratio for this fertilizer
Answer: The NPK is 8-2-12
Question: What is the n-p-k ratio of this product? why are we having to ask this, this is basic
Answer: A 12-4-8 NPK ratio is not a good formula for tomato fruit production. It's OK to give it this when the plant is small, but you will not get a good tomato crop if you continue with this ratio. Fruit production requires more phosphorus than this fertilizer can provide. I always have excellent fruit production with 10-10-10.

Question: Que tan retirado del arbol se deve poner el abono
Answer: Las espigas deben plantarse alrededor de la línea de goteo del árbol, a no menos de 2 pies del tronco del árbol.
Question: Just a couple questions... how do i place these spikes around the trees and shrubs, how far away? one spike each? what type of fertilizer is it? safe
Answer: The pictures and instructions depict placing them at the drip line of the tree, so about where the bulk of the branches extend. It a circular pattern so like 6 for a bigger tree. In my case about 6 ft away from the trunk, I put 2 on each side of my smaller trees 45 degrees apart due to sidewalk and street restraint etc...
Question: Is this a 10-10-10 fertilizer
Answer: It is 15-5-10.
Question: what is the fertilizer (N, P, K) composition of these, e.g

Use Once A Season, Spring & Fall

Trees, shrubs and ornamentals can make low-maintenance and long-lasting additions to your landscape. Providing color, structure, shade and even fruit to your garden, one of their biggest requirements is an occasional feeding, particularly for younger trees and shrubs. They use a lot of energy in the spring, pushing out flowers, leaves and seeds, so they benefit most from plant food during this active period. Feeding your flowering shrubs after they’ve bloomed will encourage more blooms next year.

Miracle-Gro has tree spikes specially formulated for trees, shrubs, evergreens, fruit, citrus, and palm trees. They should be used annually, in the spring and early fall, for a continuous release of nutrients.

Tree & Shrub

Promotes lush, beautiful foilage in trees, shrubs and evergreens.

Fruit & Citrus

Promotes enhanced fruit production versus unfed trees.

Prep Spike

Place enclosed plastic cap on top of spike. If the ground is dry, wet before driving spikes.

Identify Your Tree Drip Line

The drip line is the outermost circumference of the tree branches. For small trees and shrubs with drip line closer than 2 feet, insert spikes 2 feet away from center. Spikes should be at least 3 feet apart.

Drive Spike into Ground

Drive spike into the ground around the tree or shrub following the drip line. Be sure to remove cap and save for future use. Then continue to drive spike at least 2 inches below the surface.

User questions & answers

Question: Would one of these be safe to use in a 4 inch pot
Answer: Probably not. It's meant to fertilize a whole plant or bush. It would be to much fertilizer for too small amount of soil. Unless you wanted to break it into a ver small piece. Otherwise the best fertilizer to use for potted plants is a water soluble fertilizer. You put a small amount in a watering can and add water to it. It's also a faster way to fertilize and safer for a smaller plant.
Question: Is this ok for potted citrus? I've tried some other brands that turned out to be meant for larger trees - either outdoors or in extra large pots
Answer: Yes, this is for use on potted citrus trees. There are directions on the package that indicate how many spikes you should use based on the diameter/drip line of your plant.
Question: Hi, Does this product contain bone meal or blood meal or feather meal? If so could you kindly direct me to a similar product that does not? Thank you
Answer: It is derived from bone meal. I'm sorry but I personally can't direct you to another product. However, I can direct you to either Google it.
Question: Any idea if these work well in 6 inch pots indoors on windowsill, I grow hot peppers in the windows nyc apt. Thanks Al
Answer: Memories (of windowsill pots) are made of this; I'm a NYC girl. The spikes are easy to sink into moist soil, and they're approximately 1-3/4" long. I think they really make a difference - and the fact that they're organic is a big plus! I hope I'm being helpful.

User questions & answers

Question: Second request. Can this product be used on blackberry plants
Answer: Maxine, EcoScraps Berry Plant Food can be used on all types of edible plants.
Question: Has anyone used this for strawberries? How well does it work
Answer: All last year, I used this for strawberries I'm growing inside cinderblocks and it really helped them. I didn't realize at first how poor the soil that I planted them in was, and this kept them alive and well. I will say that it is a bit "slow acting" so it's best to add it before a problem starts and keep adding it every few months or so. Also, it works better when worked into the soil a bit, and not as a top dressing (other eco-scraps products suggested it could be used that way).
Question: What’s the recommended application rate for this product
Answer: Per back of bag: New plants: work 1-2" into top 6" of soil. Existing plants: work 1/4 cup into topsoil. Potted plants: 2 ½ tablespoons for 6" pot. 1 cup for 12" pot.
Question: How does this do for blackberries
Answer: EcoScraps for Organic Gardening Berry Plant Food, when used according to label directions, is perfectly safe and effective on all edible plants, including blackberries!

Question: Does anyone know if this contains magnesium
Answer: i think it dose
Question: Espoma citrus-tone plant food:is this good for potted indoor 7-9 month Meyer Lemon grown from seed (all sprouted different time)? how to use if yes
Answer: I have used the Espoma Cirtus-tone for 4 - 5 years. The first plantI used it on was a persian lime. The tree was very productive for being potted, it would bear 55 - 65 limes per year and the tree was only about 3' X 3' in an approximate 25 gallon planter. I sold the tree when we moved but then we bought a 1 1/2' X 1 1/2' eureka lemon. The plant is young but produced it's first crop of 3 baseball-sized lemons. It now has a crop coming of about a dozen lemons. I have been very pleaded with the Espoma line and use a number of their fertilizers on various plants in my yard. I've used their product Holly-tone for 20 - 25 years on my acid loving plants with great results.
Question: Does it have all the trace elements needed for citrus tree growth
Answer: We have not kept the bag to answer your question. Nevertheless we can share with you the result. We have a lemon tree, an orange tree, and a grapefruit tree. We have an abundance of fruits this year. We will be buying this product again.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i spray this directly on the leaves? What about the fruits? Thanks
Answer: According to the instructions in the package, yes, you can spray it directly on the leaves. This is called "foliar feeding", and for citrus trees you would have to get it on the undersides of the leaves, where it is taken up. The tops of the leaves won't take it up, and there's no use spraying it directly on fruit. As always, follow the instructions in the package.
Question: Can I use these on my tomato plants
Answer: This fertilizer is specifically for citrus plants and would not be the best fertilizer for tomato plants because it would not supply the nutrients needed for tomatoes. See the following article: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/tomato/tomato-fertilizer.htm Jack's is a wonderful fertilizer for citrus plants and mine have done really well with it. I highly recommend it to be used on the plants for which it is designed!
Question: is it organic fertilizer
Answer: no it is not organic
Question: Does this have a strong scent for use indoors

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this on an olive tree
Answer: Olives are considered a fruit but not a citrus fruit. I think it is a stretch to use this fertilizer on an olive tree. My suggestion is to contact the maker of this fertilizer for a definitive answer.
Question: Can I use this product on a Mediterranean olive? Thanks
Answer: Hello, Thanks so much for your inquiry about this product. We would not recommend the Plumeria Food for olive trees, though. It is high in Phosphorous and low in Nitrogen and Potassium, which is ideal for Plumeria, but not for olive trees. If an olive tree is lacking in nutrients, it's likely not to be Phosphorous. Mediterranean Olive Trees grow in pretty rugged conditions. They're very hardy and resilient. Their main needs are water and weed control, not fertilization. If your olive tree is struggling, make sure it is not choked out by weeds and is getting plenty of water. Hope this helps. Thank you, SA Dealz!

User questions & answers

Question: The seller of our meyer lemon tree recommends npk 3-1-1 fertilizer. i do not see this on amazon. what would you recommend? thank you
Answer: Jobe’s Organics Fruit & Citrus Fertilizer with Biozome, 3-5-5 Organic Fast Acting Granular Fertilizer for All Fruit and Citrus Trees, 4…by Jobe's Organics$ 7 99 $13.23
Question: Can this be used for potted citrus tree
Answer: I have used spikes in potted trees but I'm not so sure they don't burn the plants, personally I wouldn't do it again at least not those large spikes, I think you are safer with a time released granular product. Spikes are wonderful for in ground trees where you can place them at the edge of the drip line, but in my opinion they are too close to the trunk in a potted container and will burn the plant.
Question: meyer lemon
Answer: I use this for my apple trees and yes I get bigger and better apples. This formula (9-12-12) is for fruit and citrus. Lower nitrogen for less greenery and higher phosphorous and potassium for improved fruit production. If you want to grow lemons on your "meyer lemon" then this is what you want.
Question: How many spikes do I need for 13 recently planted trees with 1" to 2" trunks
Answer: I would buy 2 packages, or 30 spikes. You will want to use 2 spikes per tree, 1 on each side about 30" from the trunk. We have a rectangular orchard with about 20 trees on 10 foot centers that we put in last year. We used a total of 40 spikes on the east and west sides of each tree. I would also recommend that you purchase a handheld auger (Yard Butler 30 inch Roto Digger) to drill into the ground about 18 inches before dropping in the spike. You want your roots to go down for their nutrients rather than across the surface, and burying the fertilizer stakes helps make that happen. These say right on the package do not use within 30 inches of tree trunk". Take that seriously. Buried or not, they will burn your roots if you stick them right next to the trunk.
