13 best celery seed for planting

Celery seed for planting is a key component of growing celery, a popular vegetable known for its crisp texture and distinct flavor. Here's what you need to know about celery seeds for planting:

  1. Seed Varieties: Celery seeds come in various varieties, each with its unique characteristics. Some popular celery varieties include Tall Utah, Golden Self-Blanching, and Tango.

  2. Starting from Seed: Celery is typically grown from seeds indoors, as it requires a long growing season. You can start seeds indoors about 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. Use seed trays or pots filled with seed starting mix.

  3. Germination: Celery seeds can be slow to germinate, often taking up to 2-3 weeks. They require consistent moisture and warmth, with an ideal germination temperature of around 70°F (21°C). Using a seed heating mat can help speed up germination.

  4. Transplanting: Once the celery seedlings have developed a couple of true leaves, they can be transplanted into the garden or larger containers. Space them 8-10 inches apart in rows, as celery plants need room to grow.

  5. Soil Requirements: Celery prefers well-draining soil rich in organic matter. It thrives in slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0.

  6. Watering: Celery is a moisture-loving plant. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use mulch to help retain moisture and keep the soil cool.

  7. Fertilization: Celery benefits from regular fertilization. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or add compost to the soil before planting. Side-dress with additional fertilizer throughout the growing season.

  8. Blanching: Some celery varieties require blanching to improve their flavor and reduce bitterness. This is done by wrapping the stalks in paper or using cylindrical cardboard collars to block sunlight from reaching the stalks. Blanching can be done a few weeks before harvesting.

  9. Harvesting: Celery is typically ready for harvest in 3-4 months after transplanting. Harvest stalks when they reach the desired size, usually around 8-12 inches in length.Use a sharp knife to cut the stalks at the base.

  10. Pest and Disease Control: Celery can be susceptible to pests like aphids and diseases like celery leaf spot. Use appropriate organic or chemical control methods as needed.

  11. Storage: Celery can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks. Wrap it in plastic or foil to keep it crisp.

Remember to follow specific instructions provided on the seed packets for the celery variety you choose, as there may be slight variations in growing requirements. With proper care and attention, you can enjoy homegrown, fresh celery straight from your garden.

User questions & answers

Question: How many do you plant at one time (in one hole
Answer: No storage unfortunately. Rethink this product. I loved how perfectly sized it was for my office and how versatile the chaise piece was, Being able to move it from one side to the other but it’s very flimsy and day 2 there were nails coming out of the sides and the zipper cushions ripping, I was bummed and had to return. 1000+ Kintsai Chinese Dark Green Celery Seeds Heirloom Non-GMO Non-Bitter, Crisp, Juicy, Delicious and Flavorful, from USA

Harley Seeds

Based on 36 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Good variety for people tired of fussy celery plants. Great to grow for Asian cooking and microgreens. The plants are more heat and cold tolerant than standard varieties. The stalks and leaves are pencil thin, dark green and qualify for superfood status. 30 days/microgreens, 60-90 days/full-size. Chinese celery is a smaller version of the celery in Western markets, but its flavor is quite a bit stronger. The crisp, hollow stems of some varieties are light green, while others can be dark green or white. The leaves are typically jagged on the edges. Indispensable to many Asian soups or stews, Chinese celery is one of the most commonly grown vegetables in China. The entire plant is used, either fresh or dried. Add leaves and stalks to flavor vegetable or meat soups, or use them in a stir-fry. In China, celery is sometimes served as a dish by itself, stir-fried with a little soy sauce and sugar. HOW TO GROW: Sow seeds indoors 1/8" deep. Plant out just before the last frost. Celery plants need a lot of moisture and thrive in the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Seeds need light to germinate so cover with a thin layer of soil. Sow in spring/summer after last frost or in late summer/early fall in mild areas. Optimum growing temperatures are 60-70F. Grow in partial shade in hot areas. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Harvest leaves and young stems when plant is at any stage. Maturity, adaptability and disease tolerance may differ under your specific climate and/or growing conditions. Keep moist, not letting the seeds dry out between watering. *** **SOIL Temperature for Germination: 65-70F **Spacing: 8-10" apart **Hardiness: Zones 4-10 **Sun Requirement: Full Sun/Partial Shade **Days to Germination: 14-20 **Germination Rate: 95%

  • Keep moist, not letting the seeds dry out between watering. **SOIL Temperature for Germination: 65-70F.
  • Perfect for weight loosing diet! Celery is mostly water, which helps keep you full and hydrated when losing weight. Celery contains about 2 grams of fiber per cup. Fiber is a beneficial component of a weight-loss diet because it's indigestible and provides bulk in your digestive system. Your cholesterol level, blood sugar control and overall digestive health may also improve by eating more fiber.
