12 best thick grass seed
Thick grass seed, often referred to as "thickening grass seed," is a type of grass seed blend specifically designed to promote the growth of a lush and dense lawn. These seeds are typically a mixture of various grass species that are known for their ability to produce thick, healthy, and attractive lawns. Here are some key points about thick grass seed:
Grass Species: Thick grass seed blends usually consist of cool-season grass species such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, fine fescue, and tall fescue. These grasses have characteristics that promote thick growth.
Drought Resistance: Many thick grass seed varieties are bred to be drought-resistant, helping to maintain a thick lawn even during periods of limited water availability.
Shade Tolerance: Some thick grass seed mixes include shade-tolerant grass species, which can thrive in areas with partial or full shade. This is essential for maintaining a thick lawn in areas with trees or buildings that cast shadows.
Quick Establishment: Thick grass seed blends often contain fast-establishing grass varieties, allowing your lawn to fill in quickly and achieve a thick appearance within a relatively short time.
Disease Resistance: Some grass varieties in these blends are chosen for their resistance to common lawn diseases, ensuring the continued health and thickness of the lawn.
Maintenance: To achieve and maintain a thick lawn with thick grass seed, proper lawn care practices are essential. This includes regular mowing, watering, fertilizing, and addressing any weed issues.
Soil Preparation: Before sowing thick grass seed, it's advisable to prepare the soil properly by removing debris, leveling the surface, and ensuring good soil aeration. This creates an optimal environment for seed germination and growth.
Seeding Rate: Follow the recommended seeding rate for the specific thick grass seed blend you choose. Using the right amount of seed ensures even coverage and a thick lawn.
Overseeding: Thick grass seed blends are often used for overseeding existing lawns to improve thickness and overall appearance. This can be done in the fall or spring when the grass is actively growing.
Sunlight and Watering: Adequate sunlight and proper watering are crucial for thick grass growth. Ensure that your lawn receives the right amount of sunlight based on the grass species in your blend and maintain a consistent watering schedule.
Lawn Aeration: Periodically aerating your lawn can help improve soil compaction and allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the root zone, promoting a thick and healthy lawn.
Pest Control: Keep an eye out for pests and take appropriate measures to control them to prevent damage to your thick grass lawn.
By choosing the right thick grass seed blend and following proper lawn care practices, you can achieve a lush and dense lawn that enhances the beauty of your outdoor space.

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of grass is this? Would like to see the back of the bag to see |
Answer: | How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass. |
Question: | What variety of grass seed is in this mix (i.e. %s |
Answer: | Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark |
Question: | Is this grass okay for Arizona,s dry climate |
Answer: | No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone tried growing this in southern Idaho |
Answer: | Not sure, but you may ask golf courses there... |
Question: | Would I be able to get a Phytosanitary certification on this product |
Answer: | It's not an import, and you'll only need it if you're exporting to another country. |
Question: | What type of zoysia is it? That question was not answered |
Answer: | Zoysia grass. The kind Scott sells. |
Question: | Is scotts zoysia grass ok for central il? neighbors appear to have it (telltale yellow in winter). i plan to seed into fescue/ bluegrass w/ 5-6hr sun |
Answer: | It will be probably be ok in Illinois. I have it in PA and it does fine. But it does turn white in early winter and stays that way till May till all of the dead grass disappears. The advantages in my opinion far out way the that. They are, when it fully takes hold, the thickness, slow growing, drought resistance, and it chokes out weeds because it is so thick. However I did not have good luck with this seed and planting plugs are a pain in the but. Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these phytosanitary certified |
Answer: | The Turf Builder Bermudagrass watersmart plus coating is not phytosanitary certified. |
Question: | will it grow in shade in ok |
Answer: | No. Go with fescue seeds for shade. Besides, Bermuda seeds have very low germination rate. |
Question: | Can I use it up north |
Answer: | Bermuda grass needs full sun and wont really take off growing rhizomes until temps reach 80+ for a week or more. Also, night time temps should stay fairly warm. If you live in an area where this is not the case purchase fescue. I live in central NC and it grows well but just an hour or so west from here it is too cool to be a good performer. |
Question: | How many square feet will this cover |
Answer: | A five LB bag will cover 5,000 square feet -- so they say. But, it depends on how you spread it. DO NOT attempt to spread it if your SOIL TEMPERATURE is less than 70 degrees. Get a soil temp gauge. And even then, you still have to water it with a light spray every hour. I tried it at 64 degrees, and it just didn't do ANYTHING until it got up to 70 degrees. Good luck with that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can this be used in hydroseeder |
Answer: | Not familiar with a hydro seeder so I cannot answer that. |
Question: | How long it can grow after plant |
Answer: | WwR, it will take up to 21 days for all the grass seeds in the Scotts EZ Seed Patch and Repair Sun and Shade to germinate. |
Question: | Can this be spread in the fall |
Answer: | What Zone you are in. If you are in the North, probably not but better wait till late Winter or early Spring. However I had bad experience with Scott on this Bermuda Seed package. If you read carefully, the 10 lb package actually has less than one lb of seeds. Small percentage is fertilizer. 99% are mulch which you can purchase it much less price. It also depends how many sq. ft to plan to cover. This 10 lbs package covers less than 200 sq.ft. It also stated gauantee to germinate in any temperature, even exreme heat, it did not happened that way. |
Question: | Does this grass reproduce or spread |
Answer: | No, Tall fescue is a "bunch grass" and does not spread. Over the years a healthy "bunch" will get a bit bigger to help fill in, but not really spread |

Prep, Apply, Water
Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!
*Subject to proper care.
Prep
Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.
Apply
Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. The seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.
Water
A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

It PROTECTS with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Perennial Ryegrass Mix will begin to grow in 5-10 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.

Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Perennial Ryegrass Mix?

A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.
Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?

All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.

Question: | I live in AK,zone 3B-4A & need to repair/re-seed an area in my front yard due to storm damage. Will this seed work for my weather zone |

Question: | can this seed be used to patch bare spots in the summer months in zones |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the coverage ratio for this seed |
Answer: | Sorry, I cannot remember as it's been 4 summers ago that I sowed this onto my new lawn in mid-Missouri where the heat is usually very intense in summer and winters are quite cold. My lawn is the envy of the entire neighborhood and I am very pleased with this seed. We broadcast this seed like we would have any other kind of grass seed and then spread a fairly thick blanket of straw over the entire lawn. We have an automatic sprinkler system and kept it watered twice daily at first. The color of our lawn is just beautiful and remains mostly green even in the winter. |
Question: | What is the tested date and expiration date for the seed |
Answer: | Test date is when they actually tested the seed to confirm the germination rates. Expiration date is the date that the expected germination rate will significantly drop off compared to the label claim. Off course this varies significantly based on environmental conditions. that's why northern states have a longer shelf life than hotter sates. Bags stored in sealed, cool and dry areas will last longer than a bag with a small hole that sat on an outdoor shelf exposed to heat, sun and humidity at a big box store. |
Question: | what is the mixn this seed |
Answer: | Scotts Turf Builder, Heat Tolerant Blue Mix, 16.57% Endeavor II Tall Fescue, 14.62% Gazelle II Tall Fescue, 13,65% Dynamic II Tall Fescue, 3.9% Tharmal Blue Kentucky Bluegrass. Other ingredients - Water Smart Plus Fertilizer Coating. We've tried tons of diff grass seeds for diff projects at diff properties - this is absolutely #1 in our book. Whenever we have another project - this is what we will be buying!!! |
Question: | Is this a wide blade grass? how does it look compared to kbg |
Answer: | This is a mix of Tall fescue and KBG (about 30-40% of the seed is a form of KBG called hybrid KBG i.e kBG crossed with Texas blue grass. The kbg blades on here are a medium width blade (essentially looks like normal kbg) . The tall fescue varieties in here are also medium bladed - will blend really well with the kbg. The caveat is though, like any tall fescue, if the turf stand is thin, the tall fescue blades will widen significantly to fill the space. Once the space thickens, the tall fescue blades width will come back down to normal. The trick is to to keep your stand thick via good cultural practices and this will be a good looking turf. What's nice about the kbg in here (the cultivar is called Thermal blue) , is that its aggressive and will rapidly fill in any voids to keep the stand thick. Thermal Blue is known for having very good heat and drought tolerance, it will be able to hold up to the same conditions as tall fescue. It's only draw back is that it's not quite as dark as some of the more elite kbgs and has a bit of a dull look. The tall fescue counters it very nicely and as a mix, it's a very attractive and hardy stand overall. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?
A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.
It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out–even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.
Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?
A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.
Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?
A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass + Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.
All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.
Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: The Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns contains specially selected seed varieties.
Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture, and aggressively spreading roots, giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.
Tall Fescue: Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps. It was chosen for this mix because it thrives in high traffic areas and has low water requirements. Tall fescue has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade.

Answer: | I havent put it down yet. I found this on their website. http://sod.com/html/marathon_ii.htmlSeed Establishment:Seed Rate: 10 to 12 Lbs. per 1000 Sq. Ft. |
Question: | Can you plant this in the midwest (Ohio |
Answer: | This is really specialized for the US Southwest, with hot summers and mild winters. In Ohio you need a cool season grass that can withstand frost during the winter. While Marathon is incredibly hardy, I think it would be a poor choice for your climate zone. |

Frequently Asked Questions
What month is best to apply bare spot repair mix?
The best time to repair bare spots in your lawn will depend on the type of grass and climate in which it is being planted. Most warm-season grasses should be planted in late spring to early summer, while cool-season grasses are better repaired in the fall. However, before repairing your bare spots, we recommend that you ensure that soil is healthy. Patchy spots are sometimes indicative of unhealthy soil. A frequent cause of this can be from pet urination.
How do I fix bare spots caused by dog urine?
If the bare spot was caused by dog urine, water thoroughly prior to planting. Flushing the area will dilute the concentrated salts and help the seed fully establish.
Are One Step Complete products harmful to pets?
We have no reason to believe that our One Step Complete products are harmful to pets. It includes fertilizer so we recommend that the product is watered in and has thoroughly dried before allowing pets to re-enter the area.
Step 1: Prepare
Remove debris, then rake the soil to loosen and smooth the top layer.
Step 2: Apply
Spread seeding mix approximately 1 cup per sq. ft. everywhere thick, beautiful grass is desired.
Step 3: Water
This is the most important step! Keep the soil moist by watering daily (twice a day if you have to) until grass sprouts and reaches about 3" tall.

User questions & answers
Question: | can purchase now, store, and plant in spring |
Answer: | I would check he expiration date on the package. If it's "good" until the spring of 2023, I'm certain that it's OK to purchase it now.....especially if it's on sale. By the way, the product is fantastic. The new grass blended in perfectly with the old grass. It's doing super well. I highly recommend the product. |
Question: | Live in central fl. can i plant now? we do get a freeze here and there |
Answer: | I'm positive that you can plant the seeds now. Colder weather will only slow the germination process. It may take a few more days before you see the seedlings. By the way, the product is excellent. I used it to repair my grass because of major new landscaping. It turned out beautifully, completely covering the planted area. Once fully grown, it blended perfectly with the "old" grass. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this the same st augustine as grown in south Florida |
Answer: | The product listed is "Tall Fescue" which is a cool-season grass, not meant for south Florida. |
Question: | Grass seeds is not growing |
Answer: | Don't overwater, just mist it daily to keep the seeds moist. Also you should put a little soil over the seed or scratch them into the soil otherwise they wont grow if just laying on top of the soil. |
Question: | Will this grow in the fall |
Answer: | I am not sure but I am planning to toss some more out over the few bare batches I have remaining within the next couple of weeks. I don't know where you live so I guess it depends on the weather. I live in Clovis, CA and it is supposed to be 87 degrees today with the temperature in the next week or so being 89, 92, 85, 83, and then mid to upper 70's for a while. If you live in a similar area, you are probably safe to plant. I think with temps in the 70's and good watering, the grass should get off to a good start. As far as growing in the Fall, our lawn stayed green all Winter. We had very few freezes last year and none of the grass died. Good luck. |
Question: | Is this grass perennial and grows back yearly |
Answer: | If you're using perennial grass Stop! Also I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as perennial grass anyway. I mean who's gonna buy grass that dies every year and also disappears? |
