User questions & answers
Question: | Can this grass get too much sun? Some parts of my lawn get full sun while others very little and I'd like to use one type for overseeding |
Answer: | I have a small area (about 12x15) that gets very little sun due to trees and shrubbery. I tried this grass seed twice with no luck. However, to be fair, even other shade grass seeds didn't do well there either so it may work fine somewhere else. |
Question: | Does it contain Kentucky Blue Grass |
Answer: | It's tall fescue & kentucky mostly tall fescue |
Question: | Is this suitable for Seattle washington area |
Answer: | I used it in Anchorage Alaska and though it took a little longer to initially sprout (probably due to temps) it has done really well and is now the most dense patch and green area of of grass in my lawn even though it is in the shade and so far year 1 seems to be winning against the chick-weed. So I plan on spreading some across my entire lawn next year hoping to thicken it up. |
Question: | What type of grass seed is this? Centipede, st augustine |
Answer: | Mixture of perennial rye,fescue. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?
A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.
It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out – even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.
Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?
A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.
Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?
A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass + Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.
All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.
Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns ?
A: The Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns contains specially selected seed varieties.
Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps, has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade. Tall fescue thrives in high-traffic areas and has low water requirements.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the overseeding rate |
Answer: | Generally 7 setting for overseeing and 14 setting for a new lawn installation |
Question: | How tall would it grow |
Answer: | Perennial Ryegrass grows 1 - 2ft as a pure strand but is often mixed with other fescue grasses, which may compete with its growth. Since it is a cool season grass, it will stop growing in mid-May. Several environmental factors, such as seedbed preparation, frequent fertilization, water management, disease control, sun/shade duration and foot traffic (people & pets) will ultimately determine its growth rate. |
Question: | Can I use this grass for year round use even in the California heat? Or will it only work in winter time |
Answer: | Perennial ryegrass is usually mixed with other more permanent turf grass seeds for its quick germination. Plant in early Fall and Spring season. Since it is a cool season grass, it will stop growing in mid-May and/or when daytime temperatures reach the 80's, consistently. Wilt, heat and diseases will cause a rapid decline/death in the CA months beginning in late June through September. |
Question: | How long does it take grass to drop new seed |
Answer: | it depends on the weather, the heat, and a million other variables. we buy the seed, we drop the seed and either water or it rains. it takes about two weeks for grass to start growing and after the spring, it might start seeding itself. we start in february, even though it's below the recommended temperature and we seed every two weeks. we also fertilise. |

Our Quality Defines Us
Perennial ryegrass seed is one of the quickest growing types of grass. This species is often included in lawn mixes with other species because it germinates so quickly. In these mixes, newly germinated seeds “nurse” the slower establishing species, compete with common weeds and slow topsoil erosion caused by wind and sprinkler irrigation. Perennial ryegrass can also be used to overseed existing lawns in need of a beautifying "touch-up."
Nature's Seed follows strict quality standards to qualify the seed that makes it into our blends and mixes. We do this because quality is so important in every step of a grass seed's life cycle. For best performance, mow your perennial ryegrass lawn to a height of approximately 1½ -2” to prevent “stemmy” growth.
Perennial Ryegrass Seed
Our Perennial Ryegrass Seed Blend is the fastest establishing mix available. This blend contains two types of 100% premium perennial ryegrass seed, providing uniform color, growth and texture. By combining two types of premium seed you also get a grass highly resistant to disease and very tolerant of salt. This makes perennial ryegrass ideal for use along roads, sidewalks and driveways where salt accumulates from winter ice removal. Lawns grown from perennial ryegrass are also used in areas such as athletic and sports fields, golf courses, campuses and homes.
Perennial Ryegrass Blend is the fastest way to a quality cool-season lawn in the northern half of the United States. In the southern, half it can be used to overseed warm-season grasses in the autumn, creating a temporary wintertime lawn. Use wherever an attractive, traffic-tolerant turfgrass is needed ASAP.
PREPARE SEEDBED
Rake the area to remove dead plant matter, rocks, and other debris. Use a roller to firm up the soil if needed. You should not be leaving a footprint deeper than one inch.
SPREAD SEED
Use a hand-held or push-style broadcast spreader to sow the seed uniformly over the soil. Consult the manufacturer of your spreader model to determine the correct setting for your spreader.
SEED-TO-SOIL CONTACT
After spreading the seed, use a landscaping rake to lightly work the seed into the soil to a depth of 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. It’s normal for some seed to remain on the soil surface.
CONSTANT MOISTURE
Keep the area constantly moist during the germination period. Soil should remain damp, but not soaked for 15-30 days after planting.

Kentucky bluegrass matures into a beautiful, sod-forming turf with a fine texture and blue-green blades that form dense, spreading mats. Regular mowing will help bluegrass become thick, lush and uniform lawns. Kentucky bluegrass seed is better adapted to high foot-traffic and compacted soil. This makes the grass ideal for yards with children and dogs, park areas and sports fields. Bluegrasses have the ability to recover from injury and disturbance due to its spreading rhizomes.
This species has excellent winter hardiness. When properly watered during its growing seasons, bluegrass will grow back and fill-in after freezing, drought and periods of high-traffic. Kentucky bluegrass seeds will tolerate limited shade but grow best in full-sun. This species prefers fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture for optimal health and beauty.

Product description
Rising costs of water and energy are inspiring many people to seek environmentally sustainable alternatives to their thirsty, work-intensive lawns. Consequently, clover lawns have gained popularity in recent years. A clover lawn can be a low-cost, low-maintenance alternative to traditional turf lawns-especially in shady or problem areas of your yard. There are two types of clover lawns: pure clover - for low to moderate foot-traffic mixed grass/clover - for moderate to high foot-traffic Of the two, the best choice for most people and situations is the mixed grass/clover lawn. You can either overseed clover into your existing lawn or begin one from scratch. If a clover lawn is right for you, there are many advantages over traditional bluegrass or Bermuda grass lawns: Never needs fertilizer Little watering Spring green-up/winter color Little mowing No herbicides/out-competes weeds Grows in poor soil Terrific texture/smell No more dog spots A clover lawn may not be for everyone. When deciding if a clover lawn is right for you, first consider the following: Traditional grass lawns handle heavy foot-traffic (sports, kids, dogs, etc.) better than clover lawns. Clover will stain clothing easier than a grass lawn and can be difficult to launder. Clover is an excellent pollinator species, attracting honeybees, bumblebees and other beneficial insects. Gardeners may appreciate the bee activity, but it may concern those allergic to beestings. Reduce these concerns by mowing more frequently during the growing season to remove blooms. Florida Tropics Region, Great Lakes/New England Region, Great Plains Region, Intermountain West Region, Mid-West/Mid-Atlantic Region, Pacific Northwest Region, Pacific Southwest Region, South-Atlantic Transitional Region, Southern Subtropics Region, Southwest Desert Region, Southwest Semi-Arid Steppe Region, Southwest Transitional Region.
- Never needs fertilizer. Clover is a nitrogen-fixer, which means it takes nitrogen from the air, via bacteria living in nodules on the roots
- Little watering. In many regions clover is fairly drought-tolerant when added to a traditional lawn
- Spring green-up/winter color. Clover greens-up in early spring and remains green until winter
- Made in United States

When used properly, it provides a natural fertilizer for your soil, and can even help you grow something in areas that stay extra shady or don’t have the best drainage. It can also attract pollinators, which further helps your lawn and garden.
There are two types of clover lawns:
pure clover - for low to moderate foot-traffic
mixed grass/clover - for moderate to high foot-traffic
The best choice for most people and situations is the mixed grass/clover lawn. You can either overseed clover into your existing lawn or begin one from scratch. If a clover lawn is right for you, there are many advantages over traditional bluegrass or bermuda grass lawns.
Dutch White Clover
Clover lawns have gained popularity in recent years. A clover lawn can be a low-cost, low-maintenance alternative to traditional turf lawns—especially in shady or problem areas of your yard.
Never needs fertilizer - Grass intermixed with clover is healthier and greener
Little watering - In many regions clover is fairly drought-tolerant when added to a traditional lawn.
Spring green-up/winter color - Clover greens-up in early spring and remains green until winter.
Little mowing - Clover grows 2-8” tall and requires little mowing to keep it manicured.
No herbicides/out-competes weeds - Once established clover can be persistent to the point of out-competing most other weeds.
Grows in poor soil - Clover tolerates a wide variety of soil conditions.
Terrific texture/smell - Soft and cool, clover feels great on bare feet. Clover also has a mild, pleasing aroma and attractive blooms.
No more dog spots - The urine of female dogs discolors lawn grasses; clover is unaffected.

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone planted this seed in Denver, Colorado? When and was it successful |
Answer: | Complete failure. Nothing grew out of this bag. |
Question: | How long did it take to see grass from seed |
Answer: | Put down in bare, shady area with no straw, watered daily, the grass began to come up sporadically in 14-18 days. Put down in the same conditions with straw put down over it, watered daily, grass began to come up well within a few days. No fertilizer. 2 months later, grass still looks great. |
Question: | I ordered Pennington smart seed for sun and shade. I also ordered scotts turf builder fertilizer with weed and feed. can i use them together |
Answer: | No. You should only use starter seed fertilizer with new grass seed. |
Question: | is this seed for fall in new jersey |
Answer: | Yes, this is a good seed, but it takes work. I used Scott’s thicker lawn and added a ton of seed to it. The soil conditioners in it plus more seed, plus dethatching/ roughing up soil and covering with weed free straw on bare areas yielded very good results. With that being said, perrenial rye dies off in summer, and I used for bare areas, and bare again. But I have a 80lb dog that is a force to contend with. I try to add a lot of Kentucky Blue in the fall, as its the best time to grow, and spreads, but seems more susceptible to disease. I am in Monmouth County, NJ, and we had a lot of rain this year, and last fall..fall was great to grow grass, as was the mild tempuratures thru November. I had problems with moss and fungus due to so much rain this spring/summer. I dumped a ton of pertenial rye for erosion control, and it grew far taller than creeping fescues and Kentucky Blue on a weekly basis, then died. I have determined growing grass is a losing battle as every weed seems to thrive and grass dies. I am ready to hardscape front lawn and put artificial turf in backyard and give up. If neighbors have weeds, and/or unkept sidewalk strips of grass turn to weed, it is a yearly event, and after 7 years of regrowing lawn to watch die and become full of weeds...I am certain that grass seed/ maintenance is as painful as buying $60 ink cartridges for a $150 printer, endless expense. Printer just costs money, grass requires hard labor tons of chemicals, and expensive lawn service, none that works with keeping my dog healthy. So, I am killing off grass with lymphoma causing round-up and throwing in the towel and hope that no grass = next year only killing weeds in shrub beds. Artificial turf hopefully with hose and cleaner will be conducive to dog’s bathroom and since my front lawn slopes, I am taking advantage of it and building retaining walls with shrub beds, and then on perimeter adding mulch beds with Skip Laurels and a few more trees and bingo, good-bye grass seed, fertilizers, weed killers, lime, etc. I have had sod installed three times in 7 years, and overseed, etc.. I hate lawns now, I yanked out a lot if lawn and replaced with river rock, looks pretty but trees like mulch better, so rock in backyard so my dog is not running through daily and mulch and will weed front, the weeds are much more hearty than the barriers put down to prevent them. But yes this is a fall or spring season grass. I do not blame seed, I blame the soil, prep work, maintenance, mother nature (insects/weather) and surrounding weeds spreading like a herpes virus for grass failure. Hope you have better luck than me! |

PLANTING INSTUCTIONS AND CARE:
Seeding Your New Lawn - March and April are the best planting months, but quicker germination will occur during May, June and July when the soil is warmer.
🌱 No Gemination of early plantings can be expected until soil temperatures become 70° F or Higher and the soil is kept consistently moist for 2-3 weeks.
🌱 Since cold will kill young seedlings, planting should be done no later than the end of August in Florida and coastal areas, early August in the mid-south and early July in the upper South.
🌱 Mix Centipede Grass Seed with dry sand at approximately one pound Centipede Grass Seed to 25 pounds of sand and hand scatter.
🌱 Mix into the upper one-half inch of soil by vigorous but light raking with a regular steel-tooth rake. Little germination can be expected from seed left on top of the soil, and seed buried more than one-half inch deep will not germinate. A roller will not embed the seed sufficiently for good germination.
🌱 On sloping areas where there is potential for serious water erosion, you may wish to mulch lightly with straw, distributed thinly to allow the seedling to emerge from the cover.
BUY NOW for a lawn you can be proud of year round!

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you recommend fertilizing before/after adding the seeds? if so, how much fertilizer (n/p/k |
Answer: | We typically stay away from the fertilizer until the centipede is fully established. You risk the possibility of burning the fragile seedlings. If anything you can use some lime to balance your PH levels before planting. The seeds are also coated with a moisture absorbing coating and a fungicide which will help protect the seeds as they germinate. Once established, which will take around 3-6 months, you will need to do soil tests regularly and supplement as needed. I generally use 10-10-10, 13-13-13, or something higher in nitrogen. Centipede will usually deplete nutrients faster than other varieties, so it's important to test your soil regularly to see what it needs. |
Question: | how much seed in actually in this MIX |
Answer: | It is one pound of coated seed. We also sell raw seed, but the coating has benefits of a fungicide, moisture retainage, etc. The coated seed is protected and does help increase germination and storage longevity. We use this same mix on our farms, and we feel it gives us and our customers the best chance to grow centipede. |
Question: | How much would it take to cover 400 sqft. in Mississippi |
Answer: | A one pound bag will cover up to 4000 square feet. |
Question: | can this see be sown without tilling the soil first? i want to broadcast it in my existing yard that is currently a mix of grsses |
Answer: | No, for this seed to take root you need to till the soil before planting. |

Southern Subtropics Horse Pasture Blends
Our Southern Subtropics horse pasture blend is designed to thrive in the hot, humid summers and mild winters of the Deep South. The grasses and legumes selected for this blend are nutrient-dense, palatable and aggressive enough to withstand heavy grazing. This blend will perform best in the areas of eastern Texas, Louisiana, central and southern Mississippi, central and southern Alabama, central and southern Georgia, northern and central Florida, central and eastern South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina.
This blend produces a pasture that will contain approximately:
• 50% Bermudagrass • 20% Tall Fescue (endophyte free) • 20% Perennial Ryegrass • 10% White Dutch Clover
PLANTING THE SEED
Sowing the seed with a broadcast spreader is the preferred method, especially for blends with differing seed sizes. Drill seeding can also be very successful but works best with seeds of the same size.
SOIL CONTACT
After broadcasting the seed, drag a harrow, roller, or some other type of equipment to work the seed into the soil to a depth of 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. If you used a seed drill to plant the seed this step can be skipped. It’s normal to see some seed remain on the soil surface.
CONSTANT MOISTURE
Keep the area constantly moist during the germination period, approximately 15-30 days. If irrigation is unavailable, try to coordinate your planting time with your rainiest season.
WHEN TO GRAZE
Grab a handful of the new forage and pull up quickly. If the forage rips, it's ready for regular grazing. If it pulls out by the roots it needs more time to establish.
