13 best lawn seeds
Lawn seeds, often simply referred to as grass seeds, are the fundamental building blocks for establishing and maintaining lush, healthy lawns. They are a critical component of gardening and lawn care, falling under the category of Plants Seeds Bulbs in the context of Patio Lawn Garden. Here's what you need to know about lawn seeds:
Types of Grass Seeds: There are various types of grass seeds available, each with its characteristics, suited to different climate zones and preferences. Some common grass types include Kentucky Bluegrass, Bermuda Grass, Fescue, and Ryegrass.
Cool-Season vs. Warm-Season Grasses: Grasses are categorized into cool-season and warm-season varieties. Cool-season grasses thrive in cooler climates and are typically planted in the fall or early spring. Warm-season grasses are well-suited to hotter regions and are typically planted in late spring or early summer.
Grass Mixtures: Many lawn seed mixtures combine different grass varieties to create a more resilient and attractive lawn. For example, a blend might include a combination of Kentucky Bluegrass, Ryegrass, and Fine Fescue.
Seed Selection: The choice of grass seed depends on factors like your climate, soil type, and intended use. Some grasses are better for high-traffic areas, while others are more shade-tolerant or drought-resistant.
Planting: Proper preparation of the soil is crucial when planting grass seeds. This involves removing debris, tilling the soil, and ensuring proper drainage.Seeds can be sown by hand or using a seed spreader for even distribution.
Watering: Adequate watering is essential for germination and initial growth. It's important to keep the soil consistently moist during this period.
Fertilization: Depending on the soil's nutrient content, you may need to fertilize the lawn periodically to promote healthy growth. Soil testing can help determine the appropriate fertilizer.
Maintenance: Regular mowing, weeding, and aeration are essential for maintaining a healthy lawn. The specific care requirements will vary depending on the type of grass you've planted.
Overseeding: Over time, lawns can become thin or develop bare spots. Overseeding involves spreading grass seed over an existing lawn to rejuvenate it.
Weed Control: Keeping your lawn healthy includes controlling weeds. Pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides can be used to manage unwanted vegetation.
Pests and Diseases: Grasses can be susceptible to pests and diseases. Proper lawn care practices and, if necessary, the use of pesticides can help protect your lawn.
Lawn Aesthetics: Different grass varieties offer various aesthetics. Some have a fine texture and dark green color, while others may have a coarser texture and lighter green color. Choose a grass type that aligns with your desired lawn appearance.
Remember that successful lawn care starts with selecting the right grass seed for your specific conditions and needs. It's essential to follow proper planting and maintenance practices to ensure your lawn remains healthy and vibrant.

Question: | What kind of grass is this? Would like to see the back of the bag to see |
Answer: | How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass. |
Question: | What variety of grass seed is in this mix (i.e. %s |
Answer: | Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark |
Question: | Is this grass okay for Arizona,s dry climate |
Answer: | No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can this be used in hydroseeder |
Answer: | Not familiar with a hydro seeder so I cannot answer that. |
Question: | How long it can grow after plant |
Answer: | WwR, it will take up to 21 days for all the grass seeds in the Scotts EZ Seed Patch and Repair Sun and Shade to germinate. |
Question: | Can this be spread in the fall |
Answer: | What Zone you are in. If you are in the North, probably not but better wait till late Winter or early Spring. However I had bad experience with Scott on this Bermuda Seed package. If you read carefully, the 10 lb package actually has less than one lb of seeds. Small percentage is fertilizer. 99% are mulch which you can purchase it much less price. It also depends how many sq. ft to plan to cover. This 10 lbs package covers less than 200 sq.ft. It also stated gauantee to germinate in any temperature, even exreme heat, it did not happened that way. |
Question: | Does this grass reproduce or spread |
Answer: | No, Tall fescue is a "bunch grass" and does not spread. Over the years a healthy "bunch" will get a bit bigger to help fill in, but not really spread |

Prep, Apply, Water
Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!
*Subject to proper care.
Prep
Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.
Apply
Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. The seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.
Water
A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this the same st augustine as grown in south Florida |
Answer: | The product listed is "Tall Fescue" which is a cool-season grass, not meant for south Florida. |
Question: | Grass seeds is not growing |
Answer: | Don't overwater, just mist it daily to keep the seeds moist. Also you should put a little soil over the seed or scratch them into the soil otherwise they wont grow if just laying on top of the soil. |
Question: | Will this grow in the fall |
Answer: | I am not sure but I am planning to toss some more out over the few bare batches I have remaining within the next couple of weeks. I don't know where you live so I guess it depends on the weather. I live in Clovis, CA and it is supposed to be 87 degrees today with the temperature in the next week or so being 89, 92, 85, 83, and then mid to upper 70's for a while. If you live in a similar area, you are probably safe to plant. I think with temps in the 70's and good watering, the grass should get off to a good start. As far as growing in the Fall, our lawn stayed green all Winter. We had very few freezes last year and none of the grass died. Good luck. |
Question: | Is this grass perennial and grows back yearly |
Answer: | If you're using perennial grass Stop! Also I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as perennial grass anyway. I mean who's gonna buy grass that dies every year and also disappears? |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?
A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.
It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out–even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Fall Mix will begin to grow in 5-10 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Fall Mix?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80 degrees. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.
Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?
A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.
Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?
A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass Plus Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.
All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.
Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Fall Mix?
A: The Fall Mix contains specially selected seed varieties.
Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture and the ability to spread aggressively through its roots giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.
Perennial Ryegrass: Perennial ryegrass is fine textured and provides a rich green color. It germinates fast to get your lawn up and running quickly, while also helping to block out weeds. It does best in full sun, but will also tolerate partial shade.
Fine Fescue: Fine fescue is included in this mix for many reasons. It grows densely, germinates quickly and has a soft texture. It also does well in tough conditions including shady areas, cold climates and high elevations.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these phytosanitary certified |
Answer: | The Turf Builder Bermudagrass watersmart plus coating is not phytosanitary certified. |
Question: | will it grow in shade in ok |
Answer: | No. Go with fescue seeds for shade. Besides, Bermuda seeds have very low germination rate. |
Question: | Can I use it up north |
Answer: | Bermuda grass needs full sun and wont really take off growing rhizomes until temps reach 80+ for a week or more. Also, night time temps should stay fairly warm. If you live in an area where this is not the case purchase fescue. I live in central NC and it grows well but just an hour or so west from here it is too cool to be a good performer. |
Question: | How many square feet will this cover |
Answer: | A five LB bag will cover 5,000 square feet -- so they say. But, it depends on how you spread it. DO NOT attempt to spread it if your SOIL TEMPERATURE is less than 70 degrees. Get a soil temp gauge. And even then, you still have to water it with a light spray every hour. I tried it at 64 degrees, and it just didn't do ANYTHING until it got up to 70 degrees. Good luck with that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will I need fertilizer |
Answer: | No, unless it's a special fertilizer used on new grass seed otherwise it will kill it. I just put it down and keep it well watered, mostly wet all the time to get it to come up. I don't fertilize until it is mature, maybe 4 months. |
Question: | Can this be used in a mostly shaded area |
Answer: | I tried it in shaded areas and it did come up but would make sure the area does get some sun as it tended to not come up in dense shade. |
Question: | how large of an area does three pound cover |
Answer: | The website says that it will cover 750 sq. ft. We were only covering a small bare patch so I can evaluate how accurate that representation is. |
Question: | Can i use this in October/November, or does it need to be warmer outside |
Answer: | Perfect for October |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these seeds need to be covered with soil in order to germinate? Thanks |
Answer: | It is better to be covered with soil |
Question: | Have shady yard in ne ga mountains town of sautee. Will this grass work |
Answer: | In central Wisconsin we planted this in a very shady area where we had mostly moss growing because the grass just could not grow there. It has done very well and filled in everywhere except an area of about a five foot radius directly beneath a large sugar maple tree. The patch there is probably due also to the nutrients and water being consumed by the tree. We were prepared for failure with this but were pleasantly surprised by how well it filled in. We have very extreme temperatures and this has not been a problem. It is also an attractive grass (blade thickness) and germinated well, grew quickly with adequate watering. Took a second summer to fill in to a dense cover after planting in late summer. |
Question: | What is the main difference between this mix vs the "dense shade mix for tall fescue lawns" (model 18341). i'm confused |
Answer: | I think I may have made a mistake and used this. I have cool season grass but I don’t think it is tall fescue. I have more bluegrass than anything. |
Question: | How does it look the second year |
Answer: | Dead, but.... I live in central Florida and this grass came up great and then died during the summer heat. I planted it again in November, again it came up very well, and it looks pretty good now. I'm hoping it will live through March when I sell my house. I know it will not survive the summer heat here in Florida. It is not a southern grass. I have no complaints about the seed. It's just not suited for the deep south. |

Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture and aggressively spreading roots, giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.
Tall Fescue: Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps. It was chosen for this mix because it thrives in high traffic areas and has low water requirements. Tall fescue has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade.
Fine Fescue: Fine fescue is included in this mix for many reasons. It grows densely, germinates quickly and has a soft texture. It also does well in tough conditions including shady areas, cold climates and high elevations.

Question: | Is it perennial |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Is this a mixture of clover and grass or just clover |
Answer: | that's not what I found. The bag contains a mixture of grass seed AND about 10 % clover. Clover seeds are really tiny grey pearls, like Poppy Seeds. So you can SEE the difference. Also a pure clover seed bag costs about 5 times as much. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this grass get too much sun? Some parts of my lawn get full sun while others very little and I'd like to use one type for overseeding |
Answer: | I have a small area (about 12x15) that gets very little sun due to trees and shrubbery. I tried this grass seed twice with no luck. However, to be fair, even other shade grass seeds didn't do well there either so it may work fine somewhere else. |
Question: | Does it contain Kentucky Blue Grass |
Answer: | It's tall fescue & kentucky mostly tall fescue |
Question: | Is this suitable for Seattle washington area |
Answer: | I used it in Anchorage Alaska and though it took a little longer to initially sprout (probably due to temps) it has done really well and is now the most dense patch and green area of of grass in my lawn even though it is in the shade and so far year 1 seems to be winning against the chick-weed. So I plan on spreading some across my entire lawn next year hoping to thicken it up. |
Question: | What type of grass seed is this? Centipede, st augustine |
Answer: | Mixture of perennial rye,fescue. |

It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out – even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F.

All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.
