12 best grass seeds
Grass seeds are essential elements in gardening, lawn care, and landscaping. They are commonly used to grow and maintain lush green lawns, as well as for various other landscaping purposes. Here are some key points about grass seeds:
Types of Grass Seeds: There are several types of grass seeds available, and the choice depends on your specific needs and the climate of your region. Common grass types include Kentucky Bluegrass, Bermuda grass, Fescue grass, and Ryegrass.
Climate Considerations: It's crucial to select grass seeds that are well-suited to your local climate. Some grasses are better suited for cool-season regions, while others thrive in warm-season areas.
Grass Seed Mixtures: Many lawn and landscaping projects use grass seed mixtures that blend different types of grass to achieve specific characteristics. For example, some mixes are designed to create a durable, high-traffic lawn, while others focus on shade tolerance or drought resistance.
Seeding Process: Proper preparation of the soil is essential before seeding. This typically involves removing debris, weeds, and rocks, as well as tilling and fertilizing the soil. Grass seeds can then be sown by hand or using a seed spreader. Adequate watering and care are necessary for germination.
Watering and Maintenance: Adequate watering is crucial during the germination and establishment phases. Grass seedlings require consistent moisture until they become established. Regular mowing, fertilizing, and pest control are also part of lawn maintenance.
Germination Time: The time it takes for grass seeds to germinate varies depending on the type of grass and environmental conditions. Typically, it can take anywhere from 5 to 30 days for grass seedlings to emerge.
Lawn Care: Once your grass has established itself, ongoing lawn care is necessary. This includes mowing, fertilizing, and weed control. The specific care requirements may vary based on the type of grass you've chosen.
Overseeding: Over time, lawns may become thin or develop bare patches. Overseeding involves adding grass seed to existing lawns to promote thickness and improve overall appearance.
Disease and Pest Management: Grasses can be susceptible to various diseases and pests. Keeping an eye on your lawn's health and taking appropriate measures to address any issues is crucial for maintaining a healthy lawn.
Lawn Aesthetics: Grass seeds come in different varieties and shades of green. Depending on your preferences, you can choose grass seeds that offer a specific aesthetic for your lawn.
Remember that successful lawn care and landscaping involving grass seeds require proper research, preparation, and ongoing maintenance to achieve the desired results. Additionally, local gardening centers and experts can provide valuable advice tailored to your specific location and needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of grass is this? Would like to see the back of the bag to see |
Answer: | How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass. |
Question: | What variety of grass seed is in this mix (i.e. %s |
Answer: | Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark |
Question: | Is this grass okay for Arizona,s dry climate |
Answer: | No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can this be used in hydroseeder |
Answer: | Not familiar with a hydro seeder so I cannot answer that. |
Question: | How long it can grow after plant |
Answer: | WwR, it will take up to 21 days for all the grass seeds in the Scotts EZ Seed Patch and Repair Sun and Shade to germinate. |
Question: | Can this be spread in the fall |
Answer: | What Zone you are in. If you are in the North, probably not but better wait till late Winter or early Spring. However I had bad experience with Scott on this Bermuda Seed package. If you read carefully, the 10 lb package actually has less than one lb of seeds. Small percentage is fertilizer. 99% are mulch which you can purchase it much less price. It also depends how many sq. ft to plan to cover. This 10 lbs package covers less than 200 sq.ft. It also stated gauantee to germinate in any temperature, even exreme heat, it did not happened that way. |
Question: | Does this grass reproduce or spread |
Answer: | No, Tall fescue is a "bunch grass" and does not spread. Over the years a healthy "bunch" will get a bit bigger to help fill in, but not really spread |

Prep, Apply, Water
Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!
*Subject to proper care.
Prep
Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.
Apply
Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. The seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.
Water
A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these phytosanitary certified |
Answer: | The Turf Builder Bermudagrass watersmart plus coating is not phytosanitary certified. |
Question: | will it grow in shade in ok |
Answer: | No. Go with fescue seeds for shade. Besides, Bermuda seeds have very low germination rate. |
Question: | Can I use it up north |
Answer: | Bermuda grass needs full sun and wont really take off growing rhizomes until temps reach 80+ for a week or more. Also, night time temps should stay fairly warm. If you live in an area where this is not the case purchase fescue. I live in central NC and it grows well but just an hour or so west from here it is too cool to be a good performer. |
Question: | How many square feet will this cover |
Answer: | A five LB bag will cover 5,000 square feet -- so they say. But, it depends on how you spread it. DO NOT attempt to spread it if your SOIL TEMPERATURE is less than 70 degrees. Get a soil temp gauge. And even then, you still have to water it with a light spray every hour. I tried it at 64 degrees, and it just didn't do ANYTHING until it got up to 70 degrees. Good luck with that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does this do in a climate as dry and hot as New Mexico |
Answer: | I'm in Albuquerque and I think it came up nicely. I did use germination blankets to help my new lawn but with a sprinkler system i dont think they were needed. The sqft on the description is for over seeding. New lawn is 1500 I think. So I'm having to get another bag because it's a little thin in some places but where it got good coverage is growing beautifully. |
Question: | Is it good for Denver, Colorado area |
Answer: | It is. TTTF with Bluegrass. Stays green with 1- 1 1/2 inches a week. I’m in 80015 Great cool season grass |
Question: | Will this survive Minnesota's harsh winters |
Answer: | Yes, as long as its planted it the right season and has a chance to establish itself. |
Question: | How to plan the seed—walk around my land and throw it on the land by hand? Pour the seed into the machine letting the machine disperse the seed |
Answer: | You could use either method. The seed needs contact with the soil. The best approach is to aerate, dethatch, than overseed. This will looses the soil the most for seed to soil contact. If you have any dry hard dirt areas use a metal rake first to scratch the surface so there's some loose soil. Than its all about water!!!!! The seed needs to stay moist but not soaked. And it needs to stay moist until it germinates or it will go dormant. Watch out for birds. They eat seed. If you see them all over your lawn, either turn your sprinklers on(i control mine from my cell) or let the dogs out If you dont have dogs buy some! Or all your seed will be eaten |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the exact composition of the seed mixture would be a basic query of any reasonable customer |
Answer: | I am not being sarcastic in my response. I know nothing about growing crops, plants, fruit except to "stick in the ground and water it and let it get sunlight." I had a friend who I thought gave me sage advice: the plants don't read the books. So, as far as planting, I just grab some seed, chop the ground a bit, throw the seed in and VOILA! up come grass, thick, beautiful grass. Wish I could show pics. I have neighbors who told me that the grass wouldn't grow because the water would run off, so I needed to build some kind of thingy mcbeanie or whatever. I paid no attention to that mumbo jumbo, did what I described above and now their all like, "WOW! The grass is beautiful!!!" |
Question: | Will this mix work at higher elevation (9800 feet |
Answer: | At higher elevation there is more moisture and dew so most probably it will work. I spread the seeds on my lawn. It's been a month and I only see few grass strands. I'm new at this and will do further research. |
Question: | Can I just spread the seed or do I also need to buy compost or fertilizer |
Answer: | I think you should add some compost to cover the seed to generate heat to get the seed to germinate and grow a lot quicker. Birds will eat the seed if it is not covered, and you need to water. |
Question: | Is this a good starter seed for an area with no grass at all? Thank you |
Answer: | The question you should have really asked yourself is why is nothing growing in this area? If even weeds will not grow, then you may have pH problems or other issues that would make growing a desirable turf more difficult. This would be a good option if you need quick coverage assuming the soil is in good enough condition to grow grass, but as other said, this is an annual seed. If you plant it in the fall, it will over-winter and persist through the following season. If you plant it in the spring, it will die off at the end of the year if I understand correctly. If you want seed that persists season to season, get a perennial type seed. I strongly suggest researching grass types and seeing what will grow there based off of the amount of sun and shade you get. Also, if possible, I suggest looking at turf types that spread via stolons and/or rhizomes so they will self-heal without the need to reseed dead patches. This way when you have a weed in the lawn and kill it, the desirable lawn will spread into the area where the weed was and take that space over. The #1 defense against weeds is a thick and healthy lawn, and self-healing types of turf are great at this and help to reduce future weeds. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?
A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.
It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out–even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.
Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?
A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.
Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?
A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass + Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.
All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.
Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: The Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns contains specially selected seed varieties.
Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture, and aggressively spreading roots, giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.
Tall Fescue: Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps. It was chosen for this mix because it thrives in high traffic areas and has low water requirements. Tall fescue has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this grass perennial and grows back yearly |
Answer: | This works fine in the midwest. I would recommend you plant it in an area that gets alot of sun. You will also want to water it at least twice a day for the first couple of weeks until you see growth and then once a day for another couple weeks. |
Question: | Will this grass grow in the northern part of South Carolina? Will it do good on sun and shade areas too |
Answer: | Zoysa or any grass as long there water (grass is a weed) |
Question: | This doesn't seem to show Florida on the map.. i live in central florida and am looking for something to grow in a fairly shady spot in the yard. This |
Answer: | Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix should grow well in most areas, as long as it's not in the deep southern regions. |
Question: | Can scotts turf builder starter food for new grass + weed preventer be applied to scotts turf builder grass seed - tall fescue mix at the same time |
Answer: | This is a mix of Tall fescue and KBG (about 30-40% of the seed is a form of KBG called hybrid KBG i.e kBG crossed with Texas blue grass. The kbg blades on here are a medium width blade (essentially looks like normal kbg) . The tall fescue varieties in here are also medium bladed - will blend really well with the kbg. The caveat is though, like any tall fescue, if the turf stand is thin, the tall fescue blades will widen significantly to fill the space. Once the space thickens, the tall fescue blades width will come back down to normal. The trick is to to keep your stand thick via good cultural practices and this will be a good looking turf. What's nice about the kbg in here (the cultivar is called Thermal blue) , is that its aggressive and will rapidly fill in any voids to keep the stand thick. Thermal Blue is known for having very good heat and drought tolerance, it will be able to hold up to the same conditions as tall fescue. It's only draw back is that it's not quite as dark as some of the more elite kbgs and has a bit of a dull look. The tall fescue counters it very nicely and as a mix, it's a very attractive and hardy stand overall. |

Question: | can this be grown without soil--only water |
Answer: | This grass grows fast I did overseed and it grew nicely in about a week or 2 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?
A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.
It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out – even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns ?
A: The Dense Shade Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns contains specially selected seed varieties.
Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps, has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade. Tall fescue thrives in high-traffic areas and has low water requirements.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone know what causes the bright blue color and strong chemical sell? What is the fungicide? Sounds injurious |
Answer: | It definitely grows well in shade. I don’t know how tolerant it would be of constant wetness |
Question: | How many square feet coverage |
Answer: | Be careful.. Do not use new seed if there is any pre emergent or weed killer in the soil. Some of those products stay in the soil for months and will stifle growth . Got this info from Scott's. |
Question: | What type of grass seeds does this contain? I can't find the information anywhere. And what ratio |
Answer: | Grass seed did well in such conditions- but only in areas with good drainage. Grass returns - but only sparingly the following year so be prepared to reseed. Grass will take month plus to fill out. I needed to seed twice in one season - and with more seed then the recommendations on the bag to get desired lawn. For my yard -The blades did not grow in thick and hardy the first year. But the seed does take and appear as fine blades That being said- this seed brought my yard the best results considering shade conditions. It really was the only shade seed that took. Good luck. |

Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Northeast Mix?
A: The Northeast Mix contains specially selected seed varieties.
Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture and the ability to spread aggressively through its roots giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.
Perennial Ryegrass: Perennial ryegrass is fine textured and provides a rich green color. It germinates fast to get your lawn up and running quickly, while also helping to block out weeds. It does best in full sun, but will also tolerate partial shade.
Fine Fescue: Fine fescue is included in this mix for many reasons. It grows densely, germinates quickly and has a soft texture. It also does well in tough conditions including shady areas, cold climates and high elevations.
