13 best grass seed for maryland
When selecting grass seed for Maryland, it's important to consider the region's climate, soil conditions, and the specific needs of your lawn. Here's what you need to know about grass seed options for Maryland:
Climate in Maryland: Maryland experiences a humid subtropical climate in the southern part of the state and a humid continental climate in the northern regions. This means that the state has hot, humid summers and cold winters with occasional snowfall. It's important to choose grass varieties that can thrive in these conditions.
Cool-Season Grasses: Cool-season grasses are well-suited to Maryland's climate. Common cool-season grasses for Maryland lawns include:
Tall Fescue: Tall fescue is a popular choice due to its ability to withstand both hot summers and cold winters. It's drought-tolerant and has good disease resistance.
Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass produces a lush, green lawn but requires more maintenance, including regular watering and fertilizing.
Perennial Ryegrass: Perennial ryegrass is often used in seed mixtures for quick establishment and a fine-textured appearance.
Soil Type: Consider the soil type in your specific location within Maryland. The state has a variety of soil types, including sandy, clay, and loamy soils. Conduct a soil test to determine the pH and nutrient levels in your soil, as this can help you select the most appropriate grass seed.
Sunlight and Shade: Maryland lawns may have varying levels of sunlight and shade. Some grass varieties are better suited to full sun, while others are more shade-tolerant.Choose a grass seed blend that matches the sunlight conditions in your lawn.
Disease Resistance: Some grass varieties are more resistant to common lawn diseases like brown patch and dollar spot. Check for disease-resistant varieties to maintain a healthy lawn.
Seeding Time: The best time to seed a lawn in Maryland is typically in the early fall (late August to mid-September) when soil temperatures are warm, and there's still enough time for grass to establish before winter. Spring seeding is also an option but may require more maintenance.
Maintenance: Regular lawn maintenance, including watering, fertilizing, mowing, and proper lawn care practices, is essential to keep your Maryland lawn healthy and lush.
Local Recommendations: Local nurseries and gardening centers often carry grass seed blends specifically formulated for Maryland's climate and conditions. These blends may include a mix of cool-season grass varieties to ensure resilience.
In summary, selecting the right grass seed for Maryland involves considering the climate, soil type, sunlight/shade conditions, and disease resistance. Cool-season grasses like tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass are commonly used and can provide a lush and healthy lawn when properly maintained. Conducting a soil test and following local recommendations can help you make the best choice for your Maryland lawn.

User questions & answers
Question: | Seed mix for Northeast not nearly as high rated? Will this seed work in Massachusetts |
Answer: | I believe you would have to ultimately ask Scotts. I planted it last week and already have seedlings following their directions. The seed is a combination of Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and fine fescue. If those types of grasses are hearty up north, it will work. |
Question: | Where do I find the percentage of each type of grass |
Answer: | I believe the percentages are listed on the bag. |
Question: | Can use this seed in New Mexico at 7,000 feet above sea level |
Answer: | Well, considering this particular seed blend is for Pennsylvania (located in the northeastern U.S.), I would not recommend it. You'd likely do better with one of the other Scotts seed mixtures. Better yet, give Scotts a call and ask them! |
Question: | What grass exactly is this mix made of |
Answer: | According to Scotts, the mixture is: Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass and Fine Fescue, plus a coating of starter fertilizer and fungicide. It's good stuff that worked for me. I over seeded my lawn last year at the 150% rate, and this year I have a very thick, green lawn. Hope that help. |
Question: | I live in North Carolina do you think it will work here |
Answer: | Scotts will grow almost anywhere grass will grow. Yes, even North Carolina with one caveat - expect failures. The soil in NC is almost all sand in and around Pinehurst and it is still growing. An earlier adventure with the eastern coastal areas grass growing produced similar positive results. Now, Roanoke has an abundance of red clay and rocks competing with Scotts. Scotts is winning but with lots of assistance. The biggest difference is we hire grass fixers to do what we previously did alone. Suggestion: Contact your local Farm Bureau and utilize his or her vast growing resources. Also, consider reading Jerry Baker's 'all things growing' and you'll be surprised at his in depth coverage. When all else fails, Good Luck! John |
Question: | how many sq feet does this cover |
Answer: | reseeding 2800 sq ft.new lawn 933 sq ft.thanks |
Question: | Anyone having success with this in Virginia |
Answer: | I live in Virginia and it is actually growing. I seeded my lawn at the end of May and as of today it has taken root. I do not have a green thumb but can say for now that this seed and grass do grow in Virginia. |
Question: | What is the grass type % breakdown |
Answer: | the label on my bag states: `14.62% Abbey Kentucky Bluegrass, 14.62% Appalachian bluegrass, 12.19% Right Kentucky bluegrass, 7.31% jump start Kentucky bluegrass, the rest was water smart fertilizer and misc stuff |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?
A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.
It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out–even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Pennsylvania State Mix will begin to grow in 5-10 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Pennsylvania State Mix?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.
Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?
A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.
Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?
A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass Plus Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.
All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.
Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Pennsylvania State Mix?
A: The Pennsylvania State Mix contains specially selected seed varieties.
Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture and the ability to spread aggressively through its roots giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.
Perennial Ryegrass: Perennial ryegrass is fine textured and provides a rich green color. It germinates fast to get your lawn up and running quickly, while also helping to block out weeds. It does best in full sun, but will also tolerate partial shade.
Fine Fescue: Fine fescue is included in this mix for many reasons. It grows densely, germinates quickly, and has a soft texture. It also does well in tough conditions including shady areas, cold climates and high elevations.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the coverage ratio for this seed |
Answer: | Sorry, I cannot remember as it's been 4 summers ago that I sowed this onto my new lawn in mid-Missouri where the heat is usually very intense in summer and winters are quite cold. My lawn is the envy of the entire neighborhood and I am very pleased with this seed. We broadcast this seed like we would have any other kind of grass seed and then spread a fairly thick blanket of straw over the entire lawn. We have an automatic sprinkler system and kept it watered twice daily at first. The color of our lawn is just beautiful and remains mostly green even in the winter. |
Question: | What is the tested date and expiration date for the seed |
Answer: | Test date is when they actually tested the seed to confirm the germination rates. Expiration date is the date that the expected germination rate will significantly drop off compared to the label claim. Off course this varies significantly based on environmental conditions. that's why northern states have a longer shelf life than hotter sates. Bags stored in sealed, cool and dry areas will last longer than a bag with a small hole that sat on an outdoor shelf exposed to heat, sun and humidity at a big box store. |
Question: | what is the mixn this seed |
Answer: | Scotts Turf Builder, Heat Tolerant Blue Mix, 16.57% Endeavor II Tall Fescue, 14.62% Gazelle II Tall Fescue, 13,65% Dynamic II Tall Fescue, 3.9% Tharmal Blue Kentucky Bluegrass. Other ingredients - Water Smart Plus Fertilizer Coating. We've tried tons of diff grass seeds for diff projects at diff properties - this is absolutely #1 in our book. Whenever we have another project - this is what we will be buying!!! |
Question: | Is this a wide blade grass? how does it look compared to kbg |
Answer: | This is a mix of Tall fescue and KBG (about 30-40% of the seed is a form of KBG called hybrid KBG i.e kBG crossed with Texas blue grass. The kbg blades on here are a medium width blade (essentially looks like normal kbg) . The tall fescue varieties in here are also medium bladed - will blend really well with the kbg. The caveat is though, like any tall fescue, if the turf stand is thin, the tall fescue blades will widen significantly to fill the space. Once the space thickens, the tall fescue blades width will come back down to normal. The trick is to to keep your stand thick via good cultural practices and this will be a good looking turf. What's nice about the kbg in here (the cultivar is called Thermal blue) , is that its aggressive and will rapidly fill in any voids to keep the stand thick. Thermal Blue is known for having very good heat and drought tolerance, it will be able to hold up to the same conditions as tall fescue. It's only draw back is that it's not quite as dark as some of the more elite kbgs and has a bit of a dull look. The tall fescue counters it very nicely and as a mix, it's a very attractive and hardy stand overall. |

- KENTUCKY BLUEGRASS is great for wear tolerance, vigorous recuperative ability, and broad-based disease resistance while maintaining high summer density.
- PERENNIAL RYEGRASS provides rapid germination, wear resistance, recuperative ability, as well as winter hardiness and transition zone adaption.
- USE ON: residential lawns, athletic fields, municipal and community parks, golf course roughs, and other high-traffic areas.
- APPLICATION RATE: 2.5 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft. (ex. if you have 10,000 sq ft to seed, purchase a 25 lb bag) When seeding new lawn and/or overseeding existing lawn, use with starter fertilizer. (We suggest: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085ZKTCD9?ref=myi_title_dp)
- WHEN TO APPLY: Spring and fall, between 60°F and 80°F, are the best times to seed but can be used anytime during the growing season, applicable to your region. If grass seed is applied in fall, any ungerminated grass seeds will remain dormant throughout winter, then germinate when soil temperatures reach 50°F in spring.
- GERMINATION TIME: Perennial Ryegrass will germinate between 5-7 days and Kentucky Bluegrass will germinate between 14-21 days. Grass seed will continue to thicken throughout growing season.
User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be suitable in Florida |
Answer: | This grass seed mixture isn't the best for Florida when compared to southern grasses (Bermudagrass and St. Augustine). This grass seed mixture is made up of cool season grasses so it is meant for northern zone and transition zone (see pictures on the listing). |
Question: | What are the grass cultivars in this blend |
Answer: | Our current lot is Impact Kentucky Bluegrass (29.71%), Everest Kentucky Bluegrass (27.18%), Bluechip Kentucky Bluegrass (27.00%), and Top Gun II Perennial Ryegrass (14.95%). |
Question: | Is this mixture pet friendly |
Answer: | We used this seed and have two dogs. |
Question: | Would this grow in the northern states (minnesota)? could i seed my pasture around mid october |
Answer: | I live in Saint Paul, MN and had great success planting this mix. It came in thick with no weeds, which might be owing to the starter fert I used, Scotts® Turf Builder® Starter® Food For New Grass Plus Weed Preventer. I also did a number of other things owing to it being 85% KBG. I planted early (Aug 18) because I read KBG should be planted 8 weeks ahead of first frost, which around here is historically Oct 8, and I layered 1/4" of peat moss over it and kept that wet for weeks. The Ryegrass germinated in about 6 days and the KBG in about 9, but it was in the high 80s during that time and like I said, I kept it wet. Because of the high percentage of KBG, I wouldn't put this down in Oct in MN. And unless it's irrigated, I don't think you could plant this in a pasture and just walk away at any time of year. Good luck with whatever you do. |

Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass Seed. Plant Rate of 2 - 3 lbs per 1,000 Sq. ft. Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass is very dark green and, although they dont usually resume growth until late spring, tolerate high temperatures. Kentucky bluegrass, a widely used perennial turfgrass in temperate and sub-arctic climates, is probably the most recognizable species in the U.S. Kentucky bluegrass is native to northern Asia; the mountains of Algeria and Morocco; and cool, open sites in Europe. The species gets its name from the origin of the early, commercially produced seed and its blue-green color. Leaf blades are V-shaped or flat and have a keel- or boat-shaped tip. A light line can often be seen on each side of the central vein of the leaf blade. Plants grow best in fertile, well-drained soils in full sun or light, open shade. Kentucky bluegrass establishes slowly from seed compared to perennial ryegrass and tall fescue. A relatively high water requirement; lack of establishment vigor; shallow root system; and limited shade, wear and soil acidity tolerance restrict the use of Kentucky bluegrass in Tennessee. Many sod producers plant a 90:10 (by weight) tall fescue: Kentucky bluegrass seed mixture. Kentucky bluegrass is darker green than many varieties of improved, turf-type tall fescues. The strong rhizomes of Kentucky bluegrass can improve the tensile strength of sod. When weather is favorable, one Kentucky bluegrass plant can produce from 20 to 50 or more feet of rhizomes in five months.
- Plant 10 Lbs. per 3,000 Sq.Ft.
- Amazing Deep Green/Blue Color.
- Certified Seeds for Maximum Results
- Great Choice for Mixing With Fescue Grass
- Adds Exceptional Character To Any Cool Climate Lawn.
User questions & answers
Question: | What does the ‘certified’ designation mean? I’m looking for non-gmo seed |

Kentucky 32 tall fescue is the New Choice in tall fescue for forage and turf. Starting with a base of Kentucky 31 maternal plants, these were topcrossed with three superior tall fescues and three cycles of selection were performed to bring forth Kentucky 32. Tested around the country for both forage and turf applications, Kentucky 32 is unique in that it has the persistence of Kentucky 31 without the endophyte fungus, and will produce high yields of forage as well as give great performance as a turf grass in those regions where both summer and winter can be especially tough on turf. Kentucky 32 withstands heat and drought and its vigorous growth outcompetes weeds, diseases, and insect infestations. With proper management as either a forage or a turf, the growth habit of Kentucky 32 makes for strong plants with deep roots and large, vigorous crowns. Kentucky 32 doesn't need endophytes, whether they are livestock friendly or not, to be persistent. Kentucky 32 relies on superior genetics for plant strength and vigor. Seeding rate: drill 25-30 lbs./acre, no deeper than 1/2 inch.

Question: | How will this work in the deep south? does it grow well in hotter climates? it's a shaded area just hot climate |
Answer: | Here in Pleasanton CA it gets up to 95 F. in the summer, and can hit 25 F. in the winter. Not humid. The shadow of a 100 ft tree crosses my lawn from 10am to 6pm. I bought $46 of this stuff and broadcast it over the lawn with a whirlybird. I kept it damp for 3 weeks. At 4 weeks, my lawn looked like the White House lawn - great. |
Question: | ARE these seeds free of chemicals and fertilizers? Planning to use to feed my finch birds |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this seed grow in sandy soil |
Answer: | Most grasses will struggle in sandy soils due to the fact that water and nutrient retention is low, I wouldn't recommend this grass for that type of soil. |
Question: | Who makes this seed? Is a devision of Scotts or Miracle gro |
Answer: | We do it ourselves, the main difference in our treatment is that it does not add any weight, therefore you get a true measure when it comes to pounds in the bag. |
Question: | what kind of seed is this? Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue? In the title, it says 100% Kentucky bluegrass blend |
Answer: | 100% Certified Kentucky Bluegrass |
Question: | why do you hide how many square feet the bag is good for ? don't you want us to buy it? or just like making it hard for customers to fid pertinent inf |
Answer: | We don't hide that information and we certainly have no intention of making it difficult for you to find the information. We don't offer coverage information primarily because the application rate is so variable and dependent on the soil and unique situation in each customer's yard. For example, if you are renovating and starting from bare ground the rate will range between 8-10 lbs./1,000 sq. ft. If over-seeding on an established lawn the rate is generally 4-6 lbs./1,000 square feet. And if you're simply repairing small bare areas or where you feel more turf is required..... we'll it's very difficult to offer application rates since in most instances the seed is being sown by hand. I hope this answer helps. Thank you for reaching out. |

Nature’s Seed sources its seed from an extensive network of trusted wildland seed collectors and growers, as well as our own production fields.
The Best Seed For The Best Grass
Kentucky bluegrass seed is better adapted to high foot-traffic and compacted soil. This makes the grass ideal for yards with children and dogs, park areas and sports fields. Bluegrasses have the ability to recover from injury and disturbance due to its spreading rhizomes. Ryizomes are stems that grow horizontally under the soil and then send up another plant. This species has excellent winter hardiness. When properly watered during its growing seasons, bluegrass will grow back and fill-in after freezing, drought and periods of high-traffic.
