12 best cool season grass seed

Cool-season grass seed refers to a type of grass seed that is specifically suited for regions with cooler climates, such as those found in the northern United States and parts of Canada. These grasses thrive in temperatures between 60°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C) and are known for their ability to grow actively during the spring and fall seasons, as well as staying green throughout the winter in milder climates. They tend to go dormant during the hot summer months.

Here are some common types of cool-season grasses:

  1. Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis): Kentucky Bluegrass is known for its fine texture and rich green color. It is often used in lawns and golf courses, providing a lush, dense, and uniform appearance when properly cared for.

  2. Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenne): Perennial Ryegrass is prized for its quick germination and establishment, making it a popular choice for overseeding lawns or creating temporary green cover in the fall.

  3. Fine Fescue (Festuca spp.): Fine Fescue encompasses several grass species, including creeping red fescue, chewings fescue, and hard fescue. These grasses are often used in mixtures with other cool-season grasses to improve shade tolerance and disease resistance.

  4. Tall Fescue (Festuca arundinacea): Tall Fescue is a durable grass variety with a coarser texture. It is known for its heat and drought tolerance, making it suitable for lawns in transitional climates.

  5. Bentgrass (Agrostis spp.): Bentgrass is commonly used on golf course greens due to its fine texture and ability to create a smooth putting surface.

When choosing cool-season grass seed for your lawn or garden, it's essential to consider factors such as your local climate, soil type, and intended use. Different grass varieties have varying levels of drought resistance, shade tolerance, and maintenance requirements. It's often recommended to use grass seed blends or mixtures that combine different grass species to enhance overall lawn performance.

Proper lawn care, including regular mowing, watering, and fertilizing, is essential to maintaining a healthy cool-season grass lawn. Additionally, overseeding in the fall and performing periodic lawn aeration can help keep the grass looking its best.

Overall, cool-season grass seed is a valuable choice for areas with cold winters and moderate to cool summers, offering a vibrant and resilient lawn throughout the growing season.

User questions & answers

Question: can this be used in hydroseeder
Answer: How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass.
Question: How long it can grow after plant
Answer: Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark
Question: Can this be spread in the fall
Answer: No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate.

Prep, Apply, Water

Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!

*Subject to proper care.

Prep

Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.

Apply

Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. The seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.

Water

A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

User questions & answers

Question: How does this do in a climate as dry and hot as New Mexico
Answer: I'm in Albuquerque and I think it came up nicely. I did use germination blankets to help my new lawn but with a sprinkler system i dont think they were needed. The sqft on the description is for over seeding. New lawn is 1500 I think. So I'm having to get another bag because it's a little thin in some places but where it got good coverage is growing beautifully.
Question: Is it good for Denver, Colorado area
Answer: It is. TTTF with Bluegrass. Stays green with 1- 1 1/2 inches a week. I’m in 80015 Great cool season grass
Question: Will this survive Minnesota's harsh winters
Answer: Yes, as long as its planted it the right season and has a chance to establish itself.
Question: How to plan the seed—walk around my land and throw it on the land by hand? Pour the seed into the machine letting the machine disperse the seed
Answer: You could use either method. The seed needs contact with the soil. The best approach is to aerate, dethatch, than overseed. This will looses the soil the most for seed to soil contact. If you have any dry hard dirt areas use a metal rake first to scratch the surface so there's some loose soil. Than its all about water!!!!! The seed needs to stay moist but not soaked. And it needs to stay moist until it germinates or it will go dormant. Watch out for birds. They eat seed. If you see them all over your lawn, either turn your sprinklers on(i control mine from my cell) or let the dogs out If you dont have dogs buy some! Or all your seed will be eaten

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?

A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.

It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out–even if you miss a day of watering.

It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.

It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.

Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?

A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.

Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?

A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.

Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?

A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.

Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?

A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.

Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?

A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass + Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.

All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.

Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?

A: The Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns contains specially selected seed varieties.

Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture, and aggressively spreading roots, giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.

Tall Fescue: Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps. It was chosen for this mix because it thrives in high traffic areas and has low water requirements. Tall fescue has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade.

User questions & answers

Question: Is Ultra a perennial grass seed? If partially, what percentage
Answer: According to the the instructions, the top and bottom rails should ideally be mounted to studs, 16" on center. The center vertical bracket should be also attached to the center stud. The outside brackets are mounted not to studs, but 18" OC using wall anchors. The outside brackets could be mounted wider—the wire shelving should have no more than 6" overhang outside the brackets—but you'll have to watch the spacing of the wires in the shelves. 18" OC allows for the shelf supports to line up with the gaps between the wires so that the shelves will lock in place.
Question: Would this grass be good in Missouri
Answer: We used a sawsall. Wire cutters did not work.
Question: can the black beauty seed be put down over an existing lawn
Answer: yes. The ledge keeps shoes, etc from sliding off.
Question: I can't seem to find a chart describing the mixture of the various grass seeds in Black Beauty Ultra Mix and their percentages
Answer: The included shelves are 4 ft long. I cut them to fit. I had less than 3.5 ft (width) to work in. Fairly easy to cut with a hacksaw. Works absolutely fine.

Answer: I am not being sarcastic in my response. I know nothing about growing crops, plants, fruit except to "stick in the ground and water it and let it get sunlight." I had a friend who I thought gave me sage advice: the plants don't read the books. So, as far as planting, I just grab some seed, chop the ground a bit, throw the seed in and VOILA! up come grass, thick, beautiful grass. Wish I could show pics. I have neighbors who told me that the grass wouldn't grow because the water would run off, so I needed to build some kind of thingy mcbeanie or whatever. I paid no attention to that mumbo jumbo, did what I described above and now their all like, "WOW! The grass is beautiful!!!"
Question: Will this mix work at higher elevation (9800 feet
Answer: At higher elevation there is more moisture and dew so most probably it will work. I spread the seeds on my lawn. It's been a month and I only see few grass strands. I'm new at this and will do further research.
Question: Can I just spread the seed or do I also need to buy compost or fertilizer
Answer: I think you should add some compost to cover the seed to generate heat to get the seed to germinate and grow a lot quicker. Birds will eat the seed if it is not covered, and you need to water.
Question: Is this a good starter seed for an area with no grass at all? Thank you
Answer: The question you should have really asked yourself is why is nothing growing in this area? If even weeds will not grow, then you may have pH problems or other issues that would make growing a desirable turf more difficult. This would be a good option if you need quick coverage assuming the soil is in good enough condition to grow grass, but as other said, this is an annual seed. If you plant it in the fall, it will over-winter and persist through the following season. If you plant it in the spring, it will die off at the end of the year if I understand correctly. If you want seed that persists season to season, get a perennial type seed. I strongly suggest researching grass types and seeing what will grow there based off of the amount of sun and shade you get. Also, if possible, I suggest looking at turf types that spread via stolons and/or rhizomes so they will self-heal without the need to reseed dead patches. This way when you have a weed in the lawn and kill it, the desirable lawn will spread into the area where the weed was and take that space over. The #1 defense against weeds is a thick and healthy lawn, and self-healing types of turf are great at this and help to reduce future weeds.

User questions & answers

Question: Why are Oregon and Washington specifically excluded from this product’s geographic application
Answer: No this can not safely store gasoline. This is designed to hold sewage and nothing else.
Question: what would you reccomend for idaho prairie lawns , elevation 3200 ft
Answer: This 3 ft hose connects from the discharge of my travel trailer into my tote. I think maybe you need the longer hose or possibly the adapter. There is an adapter with the 15 ft Rhino Flex hose that I have which connects at dump locations.
Question: can I apply scotts turf builder winter guard fall lawn food and scotts fall mix grass seed on the same day ? if not how many days apart
Answer: Many times the manufacturer will answer questions that are posted. I'm sure that's who they hoped would answer... not us.
Question: Does this mix sustain in the following summer, or does it die-off
Answer: by trial & error, i put a line on a chopstick w permanent marker. i hold that line flush with top of 3/4” hose opening & use it as a dipstick. i watch to see the water rising for when i shut off my dump valve. BE CAREFUL - in some light conditions it’s very hard to see the water. also barker makes a bobber fill gage they sell separately for that hose opening. amazon sells it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007KQY3K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_hs7UCbZRMYZ5Z

A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Fall Mix will begin to grow in 5-10 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.

Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?

A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.

Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Fall Mix?

A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80 degrees.

A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass Plus Weed Preventer.

Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Fall Mix?

A: The Fall Mix contains specially selected seed varieties.

Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture and the ability to spread aggressively through its roots giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.

Perennial Ryegrass: Perennial ryegrass is fine textured and provides a rich green color. It germinates fast to get your lawn up and running quickly, while also helping to block out weeds. It does best in full sun, but will also tolerate partial shade.

Fine Fescue: Fine fescue is included in this mix for many reasons. It grows densely, germinates quickly and has a soft texture. It also does well in tough conditions including shady areas, cold climates and high elevations.

User questions & answers

Question: What Grass it is
Answer: Never said might to check website
Question: Is this perennial
Answer: none of the above
Question: does this seed grow in sun
Answer: That depends on your water quality.
Question: What is in the mix? Specifically what and in what percentages. I wonder why this information isn't given
Answer: These do not filter as well as expected. Have used throughout the summer here in Phoenix, AZ (since June 10th, 2020) for my misting system. Use 1-2 times a week (mostly just once a week). Water is still "hard" and leaves white spots/drips on furniture/tables/chairs/etc. I will try another inline filter next year.
