14 best blue grass seeds

Bluegrass seeds, also known as Kentucky bluegrass seeds, are a popular choice for homeowners and landscapers looking to establish lush, green lawns. Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) is a cool-season grass native to Europe and Asia. It is widely grown in North America for its attractive appearance and ability to form a dense, fine-textured turf.

Here are some key characteristics and information about bluegrass seeds:

  1. Appearance: Kentucky bluegrass is known for its vibrant green color and fine, narrow blades. It forms a dense, carpet-like turf when properly maintained.

  2. Cool-Season Grass: Bluegrass is a cool-season grass variety, which means it thrives in cooler climates and is most active during the spring and fall months. It can withstand cold winters and goes dormant during hot summer periods.

  3. Growth Habit: Kentucky bluegrass has a rhizomatous growth habit, which allows it to spread and fill in bare spots in the lawn. It can also be seeded or sodded to establish a new lawn.

  4. Soil Requirements: Bluegrass prefers well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It does well in loamy soils but can adapt to various soil types.

  5. Sunlight: It prefers full sun to partial shade, although it can tolerate some shade. In areas with hot summers, providing some shade during the hottest part of the day can help maintain its health.

  6. Maintenance: Bluegrass lawns require regular maintenance, including mowing, watering, and fertilizing.Mowing height should be around 2.5 to 3.5 inches, and it should be watered deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth.

  7. Seed Blends: Kentucky bluegrass is often included in seed blends for lawns, along with other cool-season grasses like fescue and ryegrass. These blends are designed to provide a more resilient and adaptable lawn.

  8. Traffic Tolerance: Bluegrass has moderate tolerance to foot traffic and is suitable for lawns, parks, and golf course fairways.

  9. Disease Resistance: While bluegrass is generally resistant to many diseases, it can be susceptible to certain fungal issues in humid conditions. Proper lawn care practices can help mitigate these problems.

  10. Seeding Rate: When overseeding an existing lawn, a recommended seeding rate is around 2 to 3 pounds of bluegrass seed per 1,000 square feet. For establishing a new lawn, higher rates may be required.

  11. Establishment: To establish a bluegrass lawn from seed, prepare the soil, spread the seed evenly, and lightly rake it into the soil. Water thoroughly and keep the soil consistently moist until the grass is established.

Kentucky bluegrass is known for its aesthetic appeal, making it a popular choice for homeowners who want a visually pleasing lawn. However, it may require more maintenance than warm-season grasses in regions with hot, dry summers. Proper care and management are key to maintaining a healthy and attractive bluegrass lawn.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the coverage ratio for this seed
Answer: Sorry, I cannot remember as it's been 4 summers ago that I sowed this onto my new lawn in mid-Missouri where the heat is usually very intense in summer and winters are quite cold. My lawn is the envy of the entire neighborhood and I am very pleased with this seed. We broadcast this seed like we would have any other kind of grass seed and then spread a fairly thick blanket of straw over the entire lawn. We have an automatic sprinkler system and kept it watered twice daily at first. The color of our lawn is just beautiful and remains mostly green even in the winter.
Question: What is the tested date and expiration date for the seed
Answer: Test date is when they actually tested the seed to confirm the germination rates. Expiration date is the date that the expected germination rate will significantly drop off compared to the label claim. Off course this varies significantly based on environmental conditions. that's why northern states have a longer shelf life than hotter sates. Bags stored in sealed, cool and dry areas will last longer than a bag with a small hole that sat on an outdoor shelf exposed to heat, sun and humidity at a big box store.
Question: what is the mixn this seed
Answer: Scotts Turf Builder, Heat Tolerant Blue Mix, 16.57% Endeavor II Tall Fescue, 14.62% Gazelle II Tall Fescue, 13,65% Dynamic II Tall Fescue, 3.9% Tharmal Blue Kentucky Bluegrass. Other ingredients - Water Smart Plus Fertilizer Coating. We've tried tons of diff grass seeds for diff projects at diff properties - this is absolutely #1 in our book. Whenever we have another project - this is what we will be buying!!!
Question: Is this a wide blade grass? how does it look compared to kbg
Answer: This is a mix of Tall fescue and KBG (about 30-40% of the seed is a form of KBG called hybrid KBG i.e kBG crossed with Texas blue grass. The kbg blades on here are a medium width blade (essentially looks like normal kbg) . The tall fescue varieties in here are also medium bladed - will blend really well with the kbg. The caveat is though, like any tall fescue, if the turf stand is thin, the tall fescue blades will widen significantly to fill the space. Once the space thickens, the tall fescue blades width will come back down to normal. The trick is to to keep your stand thick via good cultural practices and this will be a good looking turf. What's nice about the kbg in here (the cultivar is called Thermal blue) , is that its aggressive and will rapidly fill in any voids to keep the stand thick. Thermal Blue is known for having very good heat and drought tolerance, it will be able to hold up to the same conditions as tall fescue. It's only draw back is that it's not quite as dark as some of the more elite kbgs and has a bit of a dull look. The tall fescue counters it very nicely and as a mix, it's a very attractive and hardy stand overall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?

A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.

It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out–even if you miss a day of watering.

It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.

It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.

Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?

A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.

Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?

A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.

Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?

A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.

Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?

A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.

Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?

A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass + Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.

All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.

Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?

A: The Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns contains specially selected seed varieties.

Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture, and aggressively spreading roots, giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.

Tall Fescue: Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps. It was chosen for this mix because it thrives in high traffic areas and has low water requirements. Tall fescue has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade.

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of grass is this? Would like to see the back of the bag to see
Answer: How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass.
Question: What variety of grass seed is in this mix (i.e. %s
Answer: Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark
Question: Is this grass okay for Arizona,s dry climate
Answer: No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate.

User questions & answers

Question: Is Ultra a perennial grass seed? If partially, what percentage
Answer: According to the the instructions, the top and bottom rails should ideally be mounted to studs, 16" on center. The center vertical bracket should be also attached to the center stud. The outside brackets are mounted not to studs, but 18" OC using wall anchors. The outside brackets could be mounted wider—the wire shelving should have no more than 6" overhang outside the brackets—but you'll have to watch the spacing of the wires in the shelves. 18" OC allows for the shelf supports to line up with the gaps between the wires so that the shelves will lock in place.
Question: Would this grass be good in Missouri
Answer: We used a sawsall. Wire cutters did not work.
Question: can the black beauty seed be put down over an existing lawn
Answer: yes. The ledge keeps shoes, etc from sliding off.
Question: I can't seem to find a chart describing the mixture of the various grass seeds in Black Beauty Ultra Mix and their percentages
Answer: The included shelves are 4 ft long. I cut them to fit. I had less than 3.5 ft (width) to work in. Fairly easy to cut with a hacksaw. Works absolutely fine.

User questions & answers

Question: How does this do in a climate as dry and hot as New Mexico
Answer: I'm in Albuquerque and I think it came up nicely. I did use germination blankets to help my new lawn but with a sprinkler system i dont think they were needed. The sqft on the description is for over seeding. New lawn is 1500 I think. So I'm having to get another bag because it's a little thin in some places but where it got good coverage is growing beautifully.
Question: Is it good for Denver, Colorado area
Answer: It is. TTTF with Bluegrass. Stays green with 1- 1 1/2 inches a week. I’m in 80015 Great cool season grass
Question: Will this survive Minnesota's harsh winters
Answer: Yes, as long as its planted it the right season and has a chance to establish itself.
Question: How to plan the seed—walk around my land and throw it on the land by hand? Pour the seed into the machine letting the machine disperse the seed
Answer: You could use either method. The seed needs contact with the soil. The best approach is to aerate, dethatch, than overseed. This will looses the soil the most for seed to soil contact. If you have any dry hard dirt areas use a metal rake first to scratch the surface so there's some loose soil. Than its all about water!!!!! The seed needs to stay moist but not soaked. And it needs to stay moist until it germinates or it will go dormant. Watch out for birds. They eat seed. If you see them all over your lawn, either turn your sprinklers on(i control mine from my cell) or let the dogs out If you dont have dogs buy some! Or all your seed will be eaten

Product description

A traditional ornamental grass, Festuca cinerea glauca varna, or Blue Fescue, is a perennial that can often be seen spaced in landscaped beds where it complements flowering plants nicely. It can also be grown with wildflower mixes and as a turf grass as well. Where a low-maintenance turf is desired, Blue Fescue is well-adapted, and it can be used for lawns, gold course roughs, roadsides and commercial sites. It can be mowed, or not at all. It only reaches 10 inches in height and is one of the shortest ornamental grasses. Where it is stressed, the blue-green color intensifies. It requires little care and is cold hardy providing winter color. It is also very drought and shade tolerant as well. Start the seed indoors 4 – 6 weeks before the end of frost season, or directly sow seed outdoors after frosts have passed. Press the seed into the soil and do not cover it. Germination is usually in 21 days with temperature of 68F.

  • Blue Fescue grows as a perennial in USDA Zones: 4 - 7 and are very shade tolerant but can also be planted in full sun.
  • Festuca Glauca will grow to a height of 10 inches and has a blue-green color. It is very cold hardy and drought tolerant.
  • This ornamental grass is low-maintenance and can be used in flower borders, landscape beds, or mixed with wildflowers.
  • Sow these heirloom seeds at 3 seeds per plant in well-drained soil and keep moist until germination occurs in 2 - 3 weeks.
  • Our seeds are always Non-GMO and packaged for the current year.

  • KEY FEATURES: Grass seed mix contains 100% Kentucky Bluegrass. Various low mow Kentucky Bluegrasses specialty selected to provide peak performance in heat, drought, and humidity while providing shade tolerance with a quick spring green-up. Kentucky Bluegrass is great for wear tolerance, vigorous recuperative ability, and broad-based disease resistance while maintaining high summer density.
  • APPLICATION RATE: 2.5 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft. (ex. if you have 10,000 sq ft to seed, purchase a 25 lb bag) When seeding new lawn and/or overseeding existing lawn, use with starter fertilizer. (We suggest: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085ZKTCD9?ref=myi_title_dp)
  • WHEN TO APPLY: Spring and fall (60°F and 80°F) are the best times to seed, but can be used anytime during the growing season applicable to your region. Grass seed germinates when soil temperatures are consistently above 50°F. This roughly corresponds to daytime air temperatures between 60°F to 75°F. If grass seed is applied in fall, any ungerminated grass seeds will remain dormant throughout winter, then germinate when soil temperatures reach 50°F in spring.
  • WHAT TO EXPECT: Kentucky Bluegrass will germinate between 14-21 days. Grass seed will continue to thicken throughout growing season.

User questions & answers

Question: For a new lawn in 10,000 sq how many lbs should I buy.? (Not overseeding
Answer: Yes, blue fescue is ornamental grass, like what’s in your lawn. It has shallow roots, and it’s not invasive.
Question: What is the best time to oversee spring or fall or both? Also what is the application rate for overseeding
Answer: In my experience, they will mature into a pouf shape like the photo in about a year. I start multiple seeds in a pod and transfer outdoors around April. I live in zone 7. You do not need to cut back and relatively low maintenance. Nice color and texture in the garden all year round!
Question: what is the overseed application rate
Answer: It is as truly blue as any other blue fescue. There are no plants that have a "true" blue color. I found it to be a vigorous plant.
Question: What is the germination
Answer: I have it growing between rocks, more accidental that on purpose.

Outsidepride SPF-30 Heat & Drought Tolerant Hybrid Bluegrass Lawn Grass Seed - 10 LBS

Outsidepride

Product description

SPF 30 Heat Tolerant Hybrid Bluegrass - Now Professional Turf managers can add genetic diversity with a high-performance Texas Bluegrass x Kentucky Bluegrass cross! Expanding the area of adaptation for bluegrasses, TX x KBG types have been successful farther south than traditional Kentucky bluegrasses, and are adding heat tolerance and summer performance to northern zone turf. SPF 30 produces a high percentage of living ground cover throughout the summer, recovers quickly from drought, and is resistant to brown patch. With its aggressive rhizomes, SPF 30 improves the ability of tall fescue turf to recover when combined in a mixture. SPF 30 is an elite and medium-bladed bluegrass for landscape contractors, sports turf managers, and golf course superintendents who are battling the stress of summer heat. SPF 30 (HB 128) is a sister to HB 129 TX x KBG. Use SPF 30 hybrid bluegrass in Sod, Sports, Golf Roughs and Lawns. Hybrid bluegrasses germinate from seed slightly faster than Kentucky bluegrass, but the differences in overall establishment rate have not been significant. Hybrid bluegrass germinates and establishes slower than tall fescue. Hybrid bluegrass survive prolonged heat and drought periods. Another noteworthy feature is the disease tolerance of hybrid bluegrass. SPF 30 has shown increased tolerance to many diseases compared to regular Kentucky bluegrass including Rhizoctonia blight.

  • Heat and drought tolerant blue grass seed for USDA Zones 4 - 10

Product description

Turf Blue Pro is a 4-variety blend of high performing Kentucky bluegrass varieties designed to deliver on all desirable traits. This blend is quick to germinate with fast establishment, excels in traffic tolerance and recovery, and is very disease resistant. With early spring green up and strong summer performance, Turf Blue Pro can be counter on to provide year-round bluegrass quality. Seeding and establishment may be done in spring or fall, but be weary of summer or winter annuals. For better early weed control, consider an application of Mesotrione in the seeding process. Plant seeds to a depth of no more than 0.25-0.50” below the soil surface to ensure good seed to soil contact. Thatch layers will only slow or impede germination success. Product description

Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass Seed. Plant Rate of 2 - 3 lbs per 1,000 Sq. ft. Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass is very dark green and, although they dont usually resume growth until late spring, tolerate high temperatures. Kentucky bluegrass, a widely used perennial turfgrass in temperate and sub-arctic climates, is probably the most recognizable species in the U.S. Kentucky bluegrass is native to northern Asia; the mountains of Algeria and Morocco; and cool, open sites in Europe. The species gets its name from the origin of the early, commercially produced seed and its blue-green color. Leaf blades are V-shaped or flat and have a keel- or boat-shaped tip. A light line can often be seen on each side of the central vein of the leaf blade. Plants grow best in fertile, well-drained soils in full sun or light, open shade. Kentucky bluegrass establishes slowly from seed compared to perennial ryegrass and tall fescue. A relatively high water requirement; lack of establishment vigor; shallow root system; and limited shade, wear and soil acidity tolerance restrict the use of Kentucky bluegrass in Tennessee. Many sod producers plant a 90:10 (by weight) tall fescue: Kentucky bluegrass seed mixture. Kentucky bluegrass is darker green than many varieties of improved, turf-type tall fescues. The strong rhizomes of Kentucky bluegrass can improve the tensile strength of sod. When weather is favorable, one Kentucky bluegrass plant can produce from 20 to 50 or more feet of rhizomes in five months.

  • Plant 20 Lbs. per 6,000 Sq.Ft.
  • Amazing Deep Green/Blue Color.
  • Certified Seeds for Maximum Results
  • Great Choice for Mixing With Fescue Grass
  • Adds Exceptional Character To Any Cool Climate Lawn.

Product description

Blue grama demonstrates good drought, fair salinity, and moderate alkalinity tolerances. In its dormant state, it will also tolerate burning. Blue grama will not tolerate dense shade, flooding, a high water table, or acid soils. This native grass is a densely tufted, perennial, warm-season, native short grass distributed throughout the Great Plains and Southwest. It is found on open plains and rocky slopes. It is best adapted to medium and fine textured, relatively deep soils of rolling uplands. Blue grama is suitable for mixtures of grasses used in erosion control, low maintenance turf plantings, and surface mine revegetation. Establishment, as with all native grasses, proper ground preparation is one of the most important considerations. The seedbed should be firm but not solid; cultivation to kill the roots of cool-season grasses is essential. Planting may be done by either drilling or broadcasting, with the seed being sown no more than 1/4 inch. Blue Grama may be confused with buffalograss, with which it grows, but blue grama lacks the creeping stolons of buffalograss. In short grass sod, it frequently is the primary dominant. Reproduction of blue grama is primarily by seed and short rhizomes. It spreads outward slowly from parent plants by tillering, frequently creating a sod appearance. Bad River ecotype does not differ significantly from the general taxonomic description of blue grama. Its leaf blades are 1 to 6 inches long, light to medium green, curled, with prominent veins (above and below) and rolled at emergence. Most of the curly leaves are at the base of the plant. The inflorescence is a panicle with 1 to 3 spicate primary branches. This is a very popular native grass used in both lawns and pastures.

  • It demonstrates good drought, fair salinity, and moderate alkalinity tolerances. In its dormant state, it will also tolerate burning.

User questions & answers

Question: How Tall Is It
Answer: In general late summer/early fall will be your best bet in establishing cool season grasses. We're fast approaching the seeding window. When temperatures look to be consistently below the 90's would be a great time to go for it.
Question: how much water does it require? would it do well on an unirrigated field
Answer: This doesn't have Barvette included, however it is the dominant cultivar in our other product Turf Blue HGT.
Question: How hight will this grow withouy mowing
Answer: Does your local forecast show daytime high temperatures still in the high 70's or 80's? If those temperatures remain and your overnight lows remain above 45 or so, you may have a chance. Also keep an eye on soil temperatures, if they're able to maintain above 55-60 degrees F, then there might be some time. It does seem like the window is closing though. Spring planting is still an option if you prefer not risking lawn establishment issues this fall.
