14 best bermuda grass seeds

Bermuda grass seeds are popular choices for lawn and sports turf in warm climates due to their excellent heat tolerance and durability. Here's what you need to know about Bermuda grass seeds in the context of gardening, lawn care, and landscaping:

1. Varieties: Bermuda grass comes in several varieties, each with its unique features. Common types include Tifway 419, Celebration, and Princess 77, among others. The choice of variety depends on factors like climate, soil type, and intended use.

2. Heat Tolerance: Bermuda grass is highly heat-tolerant, making it suitable for regions with hot summers. It remains green and lush even during periods of high temperatures.

3. Drought Resistance: Bermuda grass is known for its ability to withstand drought conditions. It has deep root systems that allow it to access water from deeper soil layers.

4. Growth Habit: Bermuda grass has a fine texture and forms a dense, carpet-like lawn when properly maintained. It spreads through both stolons (above-ground runners) and rhizomes (below-ground runners), creating a thick turf.

5. Sun Requirements: Bermuda grass requires full sun to thrive. It does not do well in shaded areas and needs at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

6. Maintenance: Bermuda grass requires regular mowing, especially during the growing season, to maintain its desired height. It also benefits from periodic fertilization and proper watering practices.

7. Resilience: Bermuda grass is resilient and recovers quickly from damage, such as foot traffic or sports activities. It is often used on golf courses, sports fields, and high-traffic areas in parks and public spaces.

8. Planting: Bermuda grass seeds can be planted directly into prepared soil. It's essential to follow the specific planting guidelines for the chosen variety, ensuring proper soil preparation, adequate watering, and correct seeding rates.

9. Overseeding: Some lawn owners overseed their existing grass with Bermuda grass to enhance the lawn's appearance and improve its heat tolerance. This process involves spreading Bermuda grass seeds over an existing lawn.

10. Winter Dormancy: Bermuda grass enters dormancy in cooler months and may turn brown. However, it greens up again when warmer weather returns in spring.

In summary, Bermuda grass seeds are favored for their heat tolerance, drought resistance, and resilience. They are ideal for sunny locations in warm climates, providing a lush, green lawn when properly cared for. Understanding the specific variety and its requirements is crucial for successful Bermuda grass cultivation and maintenance in gardens, lawns, and landscaped areas.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these phytosanitary certified
Answer: The Turf Builder Bermudagrass watersmart plus coating is not phytosanitary certified.
Question: will it grow in shade in ok
Answer: No. Go with fescue seeds for shade. Besides, Bermuda seeds have very low germination rate.
Question: Can I use it up north
Answer: Bermuda grass needs full sun and wont really take off growing rhizomes until temps reach 80+ for a week or more. Also, night time temps should stay fairly warm. If you live in an area where this is not the case purchase fescue. I live in central NC and it grows well but just an hour or so west from here it is too cool to be a good performer.
Question: How many square feet will this cover
Answer: A five LB bag will cover 5,000 square feet -- so they say. But, it depends on how you spread it. DO NOT attempt to spread it if your SOIL TEMPERATURE is less than 70 degrees. Get a soil temp gauge. And even then, you still have to water it with a light spray every hour. I tried it at 64 degrees, and it just didn't do ANYTHING until it got up to 70 degrees. Good luck with that.

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of grass is this? Would like to see the back of the bag to see
Answer: How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass.
Question: What variety of grass seed is in this mix (i.e. %s
Answer: Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark
Question: Is this grass okay for Arizona,s dry climate
Answer: No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate.

Outsidepride Arden 15 Hybrid Bermuda Grass Seed - 5 LBS

Outsidepride

Based on 71 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Certified Arden 15 hybrid bermuda grass seed is Pennington Seed's latest upgrade to Princess 77. Good quality turfgrass with excellent color and superior early spring green up! A two clone intraspecific hybrid that provides a more uniform turf compared to other seeded cultivars! Arden 15 has an improved cold tolerance which makes it an ideal solution for planting in transitional markets as far north as Tulsa, Louisville and Richmond. This variety has a faster grow-in versus Princess 77. This Bermuda Grass seed is suitable for planting on home golf greens, a first for seeded Bermuda grasses. It will not give you the same quality as hybrid Tif Bermudas that are used on golf courses, but for the average home putting green it will do well. Arden 15 bermuda grass seed can be used on golf course fairways and tees - manicured home lawns - well maintained sports turf and parks. It has several advantages over traditional Bermuda grasses: Arden 15, just has a higher overall turf quality than all commercial seeded varieties in U.S. and international tests. This bermuda grass variety has a beautiful dark green color, medium fine leaf texture. Just as its predecessor Princess 77 had, Arden 15 has a high leaf density as well as a moderate spring greenup and fall color retention, and it is easily established from grass seed. Coated seeds are easier to spread and retain moisture better which improves germination.

  • Establishment Time: Under ideal conditions, full coverage may be attained between 4 to 6 weeks. If planting the putting green seed occurs early or late in the season, more time may be needed for establishment.
  • Days to Germinate: After planting Arden 15 bermuda seed, with ideal conditions, germination may begin within 7 days. Allow 10 to 14 days for completion for bermudagrass seed.
  • Where to Plant: In full sun on well drained soil. Proper drainage is essential for successful establishment and the development of a mature, healthy putting green.
  • Time to Plant: Plant Bermuda Grass seed when soil temperatures are consistently above 65° F
  • Arden 15 Bermuda Grass Seeding Rate: 2 - 3 pounds of coated seed per 1000 square feet of certified seed, hulled, coated form

User questions & answers

Question: I have common bermude grass will arden take over the yard are will they just coexist
Answer: I have hybrid bermuda. it took in most spots but I had to put quit a bit of it, and of course I live in a dry climate so watered near every day. once I saw the grass every other day then regular. but it should coexist. there were some spots that wouldn't take at all. but I would say yes it would !! hope that helps :o)
Question: Do you use a spreader to plant this seed? If not, what is recommended
Answer: Hi - no we did not use a seed spreader as we were just filling in a small patch - we just hand spread the seed for the small patch.

Product features

High quality Bermuda grass

Golf course fairways and tees, manicured home lawns and well maintained areas of sports turf and parks.

  • Arden 15 Bermuda Grass Seeding Rate: 2 - 3 pounds of coated seed per 1000 square feet of certified seed, hulled, coated form. Coated seeds are easier to spread and retain moisture better which improves germination.
  • Time to Plant: Plant Bermuda Grass seed when soil temperatures are consistently above 65° F
  • Where to Plant: In full sun on well drained soil. Proper drainage is essential for successful establishment and the development of a mature, healthy putting green.
  • Planting Method: Do not cover the bermuda seed with too much soil - no more than 1/16 inch.
  • Water: Soil moisture for this putting green seed must be maintained for about 1-2 weeks or until germination.
  • Days to Germinate: After planting Arden 15 bermuda seed, with ideal conditions, germination may begin within 7 days. Allow 10 to 14 days for completion for bermudagrass seed.
  • Establishment Time: Under ideal conditions, full coverage may be attained between 4 to 6 weeks. If planting the putting green seed occurs early or late in the season, more time may be needed for establishment.
  • First Mowing: When grass is 3 inches tall. It is recommended that no more than 1/3 of the leaf blade be removed per mowing.
  • Mower/Mowing Height/Frequency: For a Arden 15 putting green the reel mower recommended/minimum height is manageable at 3/16 inch (5mm). It maintains good leaf density at mowing heights under 1.25 inch when mowed with reel mowers. Can be mowed at higher heights for general purpose home lawns (1.25 up to 3 inches) - Rotary mowers are fine for heights above 1.25 inches. Most home / commercial lawns are best maintained at 1.5 to 2.5 inches for a good overall look. Rotary mowers can usually be used at heights above 1.5 inches.
  • Winter Over-seeding: May be done for year round green color, but not generally recommended on Bermudagrass less than 6 to 8 months of age. Immature turf may be damaged by the verticutting and scalping procedures, leaving it unable to compete with the over-seeded species during the spring transition.
  • Maintenance: This hybrid is dense. Periodic verticutting may be required under high maintenance conditions.

New turf: 2 - 3 pounds of Arden 15 grass seed per 1,000 square feet. Plant the home golf green seed when soil temperature reaches 65 degrees in spring up until a minimum of 6 weeks before frost in fall.

Question: I live in NJ, and I want to use this for both sun and shade, will it grow well
Answer: I live in Southern California between LA and Palm Springs. The Pennington Complete Tall Fescue has done well in complete sun, 100+ degree temperatures, as well as in the shaded areas under trees. It has stayed green year round. We do have winter with temperatures in the 40's but I'm aware this is no comparison to NJ.

Frequently Asked Questions

What month is best to apply bare spot repair mix?

The best time to repair bare spots in your lawn will depend on the type of grass and climate in which it is being planted. Most warm-season grasses should be planted in late spring to early summer, while cool-season grasses are better repaired in the fall. However, before repairing your bare spots, we recommend that you ensure that soil is healthy. Patchy spots are sometimes indicative of unhealthy soil. A frequent cause of this can be from pet urination.

How do I fix bare spots caused by dog urine?

If the bare spot was caused by dog urine, water thoroughly prior to planting. Flushing the area will dilute the concentrated salts and help the seed fully establish.

Are One Step Complete products harmful to pets?

We have no reason to believe that our One Step Complete products are harmful to pets. It includes fertilizer so we recommend that the product is watered in and has thoroughly dried before allowing pets to re-enter the area.

Step 1: Prepare

Remove debris, then rake the soil to loosen and smooth the top layer.

Step 2: Apply

Spread seeding mix approximately 3/4 cup per sq. ft. everywhere thick, beautiful grass is desired.

Step 3: Water

This is the most important step! Keep the soil moist by watering daily (twice a day if you have to) until grass sprouts and reaches about 1” - 1 1/2" tall.

Princess 77 Hybrid Bermuda Grass Seeds 2 Lbs (Bulk)

Pennington Seed

Based on 49 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Princess 77 Bermuda grass is the first dense, fine textured F1 hybrid Bermuda grass variety to be available in seeded form. Princess 77 seed is produced much like hybrid seed corn, but instead of two inbred parent lines, two self-incompatible but cross-fertile parent clones are planted in alternating rows. The specific combining ability of these two elite parent clones is what makes Princess 77 the first seeded Bermuda grass that is competitive with the vegetative hybrid Bermuda grasses for turf grass quality, leaf texture, color, and density. Higher overall turf quality than all commercial seeded varieties in U.S. and International tests Establishing Princess 77 Princess 77 should be planted when soil temperatures are consistently above 65º F (18º C). For best results, take a soil sample and follow fertility recommendations prior to planting. Care must be taken not to cover the seed with too much soil; no more than 1/8 inches (3 mm) covering over the seed is advised. After seeding, soil moisture in the root zone must be maintained for about 1 to 2 weeks, germination may begin within 7 to 10 days. After the new turf is established, less frequent, deep watering is desirable. Maintaining Princess 77 No more than 1/3 of the leaf blade should be removed per mowing. Recommended mowing height is 3/16 to 1 inch (5 to 25 mm). Full coverage may be attained in 4 to 6 weeks with proper management. Fertilize with ½ to 1 lb/1,000 sq ft actual N (0.25 to 0.5 kg /100 sq m) per month of growing season for optimum performance, fertilization may be reduced by ½ if clippings are returned. This is a dense hybrid - verticut at least once per growing season during periods of active growth. Winter overseeding may be done for year round green color, but is generally not recommended on turf less than 6 months old.

  • High tolerance to sun, drought and traffic
  • Outstanding drought tolerance
  • Dark green color, medium fine leaf texture
  • High leaf density
  • Good fall color retention

User questions & answers

Question: Is this certified seed? I don't see that reference in the description. Thank you
Answer: I don't remember, I threw away all the packaging over a month ago. What I can tell you is that the Princess 77 started growing in 7-10 days and it is noticeably different from the old Bermuda that I still have growing around the house. Hope that helps. Sorry
Question: Whats the prep for this? we have 250 sq ft dirt yard, the soil is clean but pretty hard- can i loosen it and seed/water? live in socal
Answer: I live in South Texas. I tilled the soil, evened it out, spread the seeds by hand, raked them lightly into the dirt and watered. Watered twice a day until the grass was about 2" in height, then reduced to wastering once a day for about a week, and then less frequently until I got to the point where I water it only when the dirt was absolutely dry and the grass started to turn brown. When it reached 2 inches I cut the grass down to about 1 inch and kept doing that for several weeks. Also fertilized twice after I stated cutting it (No fertilizer with weed killer - it will kill the grass). Most weeds I pull manually, the remainder I spot treat with liquid weed killer for lawns. I have a nice lush lawn now!
Question: Is the Princess 77 Bermuda grass good for shaded areas
Answer: Generally speaking, Bermuda isn’t a good choice for shade but it depends how much shade you have. It really requires a good 4 hours of direct sun to do well, although a longer cutting height in shady areas can help.
Question: What is the coverage per lb ? I saw that the 25lb bag noted 25k sq ft. So the math notes 1lb= 1000 sq ft. Do the smaller bags note same ratio
Answer: Maybe for a pro 1lb = 1k sq ft but I found that I needed around 1.5 - 2 lbs for my ~1.2k sq ft yard. If you can get a good even consistency, I think you could pull it off.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this grow in central Florida
Answer: SHOULD GROW IN CENTRAL FLORIDA.
Question: Does the bag say covers 50,000 square feet
Answer: Not sure what the bag says but you can probably get that coverage if you do a good job
Question: Most grass seed manufactures list the sq ft coverage per bag. At $300.00 a bag, how much does it cover? I have an 8,000 lawn I need seed
Answer: Should cover 10,000-25,000 sq. ft very nicely. You should have no problem. Be sure to prep soil and water adequately to germinate. I have heard you should cover with straw to keep moist and protect from wind till germination. I never did this and got a good stand. I did, however, lime, airiate and fertilize before seeding.
Question: Is this considered a hybrid or common bermuda grass seed
Answer: I believe its a hybrid

User questions & answers

Question: How does this do in a climate as dry and hot as New Mexico
Answer: I'm in Albuquerque and I think it came up nicely. I did use germination blankets to help my new lawn but with a sprinkler system i dont think they were needed. The sqft on the description is for over seeding. New lawn is 1500 I think. So I'm having to get another bag because it's a little thin in some places but where it got good coverage is growing beautifully.
Question: Is it good for Denver, Colorado area
Answer: It is. TTTF with Bluegrass. Stays green with 1- 1 1/2 inches a week. I’m in 80015 Great cool season grass
Question: Will this survive Minnesota's harsh winters
Answer: Yes, as long as its planted it the right season and has a chance to establish itself.
Question: How to plan the seed—walk around my land and throw it on the land by hand? Pour the seed into the machine letting the machine disperse the seed
Answer: You could use either method. The seed needs contact with the soil. The best approach is to aerate, dethatch, than overseed. This will looses the soil the most for seed to soil contact. If you have any dry hard dirt areas use a metal rake first to scratch the surface so there's some loose soil. Than its all about water!!!!! The seed needs to stay moist but not soaked. And it needs to stay moist until it germinates or it will go dormant. Watch out for birds. They eat seed. If you see them all over your lawn, either turn your sprinklers on(i control mine from my cell) or let the dogs out If you dont have dogs buy some! Or all your seed will be eaten

User questions & answers

Question: Is this grass annual or semiannual
Answer: I just spread it on soil that was very sandy and watered it in. I think it will do well in any soil as long as it is covered lightly with dirt and kept moist.
Question: is fescue a perennial seed
Answer: It really depends on how thick you sow it. I did an area about 12'x4' plus a smaller area 6'x3'. It came up fairly thick and did ok until late summer. The next spring it was pretty thin. This was the only seed I've had any luck with under 50 year old trees, but it took a lot of watering to get it started. I just decided it wasn't worth the cost and effort after planting it two years in a row.
Question: Will it grow well in sandy soil? I live in florida. Zip code
Answer: It work ok for me but still not great my area has very limited sun. Less than the 3 hours a day limit that that use as a guide. So I am still looking for a good seed in full shade my self. Were you have zero sun i would say it wont work maybe someone else has had better success than I ?
Question: Has anyone used this in Texas? Any luck with it
Answer: The one I got from Amazon was 14.64% Endeavor II Tall Fescue, 14.63% Faith Tall Fescue, 14.62% Gazelle II Tall Fescue, along with 4.85 Wendy Jean Creeping Red Fescue. 0.01% were weed seeds with no noxious weeds found. 50% of the ingredients were the coating, 1% inert, and 0.25% was other crop. The batch I got in a 3-lb bag from my local Ace Hardware was 17.06% Endeavor II Tall Fescue, 17.05% Duration Tall Fescue, and 14.63% Gazelle II Tall Fescue. The 7-lb bag there was 17.06% Gazelle II Tall Fescue, 17.05% Endeavor II Tall Fescue, 9.74% Faith Tall Fescue, and 4.89% Dynamic II Tall Fescue. I'm undecided as to how I feel about that bit of creeping red in there, but I'm a little happier with the locally bought mixes versus the one from Amazon.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the label say what VARIETY of Bermuda Grass this is? Thank you
Answer: Yes it does. The variety of Bermuda Grass is Sunbird Bermuda Grass
Question: How do you bird-proof
Answer: I seed in the late fall. After seeding spread a thick layer of straw over the seeded area. This will keep the birds away and keep the ground moister without the worry of mold or fungus growth on the seeds. I plant in the fall so the seed is in place as soon as the spring rains start so the grass gets an early start.
Question: when can i overseed after using Weed Preventer
Answer: since plants require spacing for height & fruiting reqmnts, that is why is says that on it.You do not want to put too many plants too close to each other so there not'choked' on each others roots, grow space....happy gardening if you want to over seed a lawn.. do a simple soil test and give to the local ag dept to test for the concentration of weed killer in soil..as long as.not eaten by ponies but lawn and lawnseed, does contain some weed seeds in it contac the mfg directly for the answer too or chk the MSDS sheet
Question: Is this a good grass for under a tree and dry soil
Answer: From Japan For white coating of seeds, it is easy to understand when you sow. Germinated in the 5th humidity of 60%, in 30 degree heat. It was a good amount to just 30 square meters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?

A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.

It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out–even if you miss a day of watering.

It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.

It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.

Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?

A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.

Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?

A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.

Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?

A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.

Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?

A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.

Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?

A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass + Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.

All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.

Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?

A: The Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns contains specially selected seed varieties.

Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture, and aggressively spreading roots, giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.

Tall Fescue: Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps. It was chosen for this mix because it thrives in high traffic areas and has low water requirements. Tall fescue has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade.
