14 best apex lawn fertilizers

there isn't a widely recognized brand or product line specifically known as "Apex" in the context of lawn fertilizers. However, we can provide you with general information about lawn fertilizers and what to consider when choosing a product:

  1. Types of Fertilizers:

    • Nitrogen (N): Promotes leaf and stem growth.
    • Phosphorus (P): Aids in root development and flower/fruit production.
    • Potassium (K): Supports overall plant health, including resistance to diseases.
  2. Granular vs. Liquid:

    • Granular Fertilizers: These come in solid form and are applied by spreading them over the lawn. They release nutrients slowly over time.
    • Liquid Fertilizers: Applied as a liquid using a hose attachment or a sprayer. They are absorbed more quickly but may need more frequent application.
  3. Slow-Release vs. Quick-Release:

    • Slow-Release: Releases nutrients gradually over an extended period, reducing the risk of over-fertilizing and providing a steady supply to the plants.
    • Quick-Release: Provides a rapid nutrient boost but may require more frequent application.
  4. Seasonal Considerations:

    • Different fertilizers are formulated for specific seasons. For example, spring fertilizers may have a higher nitrogen content to promote green growth, while fall fertilizers may focus on root development.
  5. Soil Testing:

    • Conducting a soil test can help determine the specific nutrient needs of your lawn, allowing you to choose a fertilizer that addresses deficiencies.
  6. Organic vs. Synthetic:

    • Organic Fertilizers: Derived from natural sources, they release nutrients slowly and improve soil structure.
    • Synthetic Fertilizers: Manufactured chemically, they provide nutrients in a more concentrated form but may have environmental considerations.
  7. Application Instructions:

    • Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for application rates and frequency to avoid over-fertilizing, which can harm plants and contribute to environmental pollution.

When selecting a lawn fertilizer, it's crucial to consider your specific lawn's needs, the local climate, and soil conditions.Additionally, checking for customer reviews or seeking advice from local gardening experts can provide insights into the performance of specific products in your region.

User questions & answers

Question: It is ok to put Weed and Feed after putting this product but before 30 days are over. Says at the back to wait for 30 days before another application
Answer: You would want to wait the entire time before applying another product with fertilizer. If you have broadleaf weeds now, you can spot treat with Ortho Weed B Gon.
Question: I just applied Crabgrass preventer. How long must i wait to lay down seed to grow grass
Answer: In what I’ve read before, 6-8 weeks. At that point you should wait until fall, which is there ideal grass time in most climates. It gives the grass a chance to start growing on top, then winterize and grow strong roots so that spring will be awesome. About 3 years now I’ve been applying this strategy and find my grass is greener than all the neighbors. There is one neighbor who has a thicker lawn but he has a different slope in his yard and has been at it much longer. I will overtake him!
Question: How soon can I throw down some new seed? I would like more kentucky blue in my lawn
Answer: you have created a force field. only way is to put down new loam 1/2'' thick then seed . late august aerate lawn then seed,& do it like your feeding the chicken & those hens are hungry. next year you will not believe, keep your deck clean & blades sharp. GOOD LUCK
Question: Okay to use in August
Answer: I have Poa Annua and have been doing a lot of research on it. Many websites with information about Poa Annua say for effective control, besides Spring treatment it is good to put pre emergent down in August/September. Here is a quote from the Purdue University Extension website: "Poa annua is a winter annual that germinates in the late summer/early fall once soil temperatures fall below 70o F. Seedlings mature in the fall, overwinter in a vegetative state, and flower and produce seed in late spring and early summer." I just chatted with Scott's website and they said this product can be effective when used in this manner. I plan to apply it then AND next Spring. Most of the lawns in my development have been taken over by Poa Annua but I am still fighting the fight and hope to win or at least keep it to a minimum.

Get An Early Start This Spring

Protect your lawn all season long against listed weeds, including crabgrass, all while feeding for a fast green-up after winter.

When To Apply To Prevent Weeds

Apply in early spring to prevent the germination of crabgrass, chickweed, poa annua, and other common lawn weeds, before they start to spread. Apply before the 3rd or 4th mowing to protect all season long.

Tips For Lawn Care Success

First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stress of weeds, weather and activity. Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn. This allows grass to use water more effectively. Finally water, utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10 am - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.

User questions & answers

Question: Do i add this to water that is already balanced or do i mix it then set pH for my needs. I guess what im asking is is it neutral
Answer: I have to very slightly adjust PH, down, as always, after adding nutes. My tap water has a TDS of 90-ish ppm and a PH of 8 out of tap. When mixed in 5 gallon buckets... I add 20 ml of each ( Micro, Grow, Bloom: in that order) I end up with a TDS of 480 - 500 ppm and a PH of 6.2 ish. Growing hydro lettuce (Kratky and DWC) So I drop 4-5 drops of PH Down in the bucket and things look good, dropping PH into the high 5's.
Question: I dont see how often you apply just the strenght
Answer: On the website it says that if you dump your reservoir once a week then you can top it off with just plain water in between. The table on the bottle is not for any photoperiod plants so please check their website as they do have a feeding schedule for photoperiod plants, such as medical marijuana. They will not answer any questions regarding marijuana so never say or use any term referring to marijuana. So far this may be my favorite hydro fertilizer I have used, it's easy to use, helps stabilize PH and has made my plants grow much faster, not to mention how great the root growth is.
Question: Approximately how many gallons of nutrient solution will this make
Answer: 1 (US) fluid ounce, equals 6 (US) teaspoons. So it's 6 times the amount of ounces in bottle for the total amount of teaspoons telling you how many gallons you can get. With a 32 oz bottle if you use one teaspoon per gallon of water that's 102 gallons of mix. 204 gallons of mix if you only use half a teaspoon.
Question: Is it necessary to mix 2 tonics together? How much tonic do I use if I have a 20 gallon reservoir
Answer: I grow in soil. The soil I use is already rich in nutrition "Happy Frog". I use about 1/2 teaspoon of FloraGro & 1/2 teaspoon FloraMicro per Gallon of water. I water every 3 to 4 days depending on the Moisture of the soil. Every 3rd feeding I flush the plants with pure water and let the soil to dry until I notice stress in the plant and resume feeding. When it's time to induce flowering I quit using FloraGro. And start using 1 teaspoon FloraBloom and 1 teaspoon FloraMicro and follow the same feeding schedule as above. The FloraMicro is very important for overall health and vigor of the plant. About 10 days before harvest I flush with a 1/2 teaspoon FloraBloom and FloraMicro, 5 days before harvest I flush with pure water and let dry out for 5 to 6 days then harvest. Very IMPORTANT! Is the Ph of your water after adding your fertilizer and when you flush with pure water. I keep my Ph @ 6.0 Just a helpful hint. Happy growing!

User questions & answers

Question: Can this product be utilized with the 7-1-2 Innova Organic Fertilizer
Answer: Yes definitely. 7-1-2 is an organic fertilizer which it would not burn your lawn.
Question: I'm working to correct my soil ph. it is very acidic and therefore having trouble taking up nutrients. would you recommend waiting until ph is fixed
Answer: Yes, we would recommend you to wait your pH back to the neutral state first before apply PGF. We would recommend you check out Humic acid and Innova organic fertilizer product.
Question: setting on my Scott's edgeguard for the 18 pound bag only got me coverage of barely 3,000 square feet. I don't see how that would treat 5k sq ft
Answer: Lower your spreader setting or walk faster. Either will thin out the application a bit for a broader coverage. I'm rather OCD and I use a lower setting and do a pass in one direction with half the bag, then put the other half in and go across the lawn at a 90 degree angle for a more even distribution. Also, I recommend buying the larger bag as it is cheaper per pound, then just roll up the top and tape it and stick it in the garage or shed for the next application. I first used this in 2020, and the larger bags were not available, which means I need to probably go ahead and start looking for some now. Look at big box stores over the winter when they are trying to clear shelf space for the holidays and you can find lawn care stuff frequently at reduced rates. This left darker green stripes on my lawn which wasn't the fault of the product, but my lawn was deficient in iron. If you have this happen, adding more iron should help even out the color. Ironite is one popular choice. There are also spray on liquid iron applications if you need a quick fix for a lawn party or something.
Question: Can i safely add this to my normal lawn care treatments? in other words, if i'm putting weed and feed down in may, can i also add this as well
Answer: Two partial answers....the real answer is maybe. Each turf type requires a certain amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which are the 16-4-8, meaning if you had a 100 pound bag of this fertilizer, 16 pounds would be nitrogen, 4 pounds would be phosphorus, and 8 pounds would be potassium. Different turfs require different amounts of these nutrients each year. For example, my Zoysia requires 2-3 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. per year, and the other 4/8 in the bag would be good ranges as well for my turf type. Yours may be different. You want to spread the lawn feedings across the growing season, and not feed the lawn when it is about to go dormant, which is when the weather turns cooler for warm season grasses, and when the weather is getting hottest for cool season grasses. Some people feed their lawns twice a year, some 3-4-5 times a year or more, depending on how evenly you want to spread the nutrients through the growing season. However many times you plan on putting down fertilizer each year, figure out how much you need each year based on your turf type (Google "Lawn Care Academy" and look up your grass type) and divide that by how many times you plan to feed. If the Weed-N-Feed plus this is in the general correct range for that feeding, you can apply both. Generally I apply fertilizer throughout the year and put down some Ironite a few times to deepen the green in my lawn, and some Milorganite (some nitrogen and a lot of organic matter for the soil bacteria to feed on), and with a pre-emergent program (Prodiamine or similar product), that will keep most weeds away. 2, 4D and Quinclorac will take care of most weeds and crabgrass. There is a spectracide product that contains those along with Dicamba and Sulfentrazone. if these are safe on your turf type, I'd use that as a follow up to spot treat remaining weeds. Once the bulk of the weeds are managed, which will be 95% of them, I use an envelope moistener with a sponge and put glyphosate in it with some surfactant and apply directly to any remaining weeds to kill them. Stick with a proper pre-emergent program and that will keep 99% of the future weeds from popping up.

User questions & answers

Question: I want to use this for my tower garden. How much per gallon
Answer: 6 ml per gallon of water every 2 weeks
Question: What would the appropriate diluted ppm be for this product
Answer: Hello John, I am assuming you are asking referencing using this product in an Aerogarden. The answer would be the same for any hydroponic smart garden. Lets use the Aerogarden Sprout as an example. This size container (approximately 6 cups of water at fill up) would require 4 ml of fertilizer. This fertilizer is 4% nitrogen, so the recommended rate of 4 ml is equivalent to 1/3oz per gallon of water. One ounce of this fertilizer in one gallon of water would be approximately100 ppm of nitrogen fertilizer. So, using 4ml at fill up would be the equivalent of 33 ppm. Hopes this helps. And thanks for using our EZ-gro fertilizer
Question: In using this for ebb & flow system, how often would i replenish the EZ-Gro to my reservoir
Answer: the system tell you when to feed however I will feed about twice a month
Question: Is there an expiration date on the container? After opening, how long does the product last? Thank you
Answer: This product does not require an expiration date. After opening it will last indefinitely. Always shake well before use. Thank you for using EZgrow

User questions & answers

Question: would it work well for powdered lime
Answer: Just bought a Classic Drop Spreader for use with pulverized (powdered) lime. Worked great with a 40 lb. bag and a setting of 14. Took a few passes to use up the bag at the recommended application rate found on the bag of lime. Cross (perpendicular) application was recommended by the lime supplier. Tried to apply a bag of lime with a rotary spreader (Scotts 2000) and wound up with clogging due to the insufficient hole size even at a setting of 11. Recommend you use granular lime with the rotary spreader. Seems to work well for me with the Scotts 2000.
Question: can you buy replacement tires
Answer: Replacement wheels are available from Scotts. Please reach us through the "Contact Us" page on scotts.com.
Question: Does it say where this spreader is made
Answer: The spreader is made in California.
Question: How is the spread when used for salt in the winter? Does it have a good spread or does it just trickle to the floor with very little spread
Answer: I bought this 5 years ago and only use for salt in the winter, the metal frame finally gave out in the beginning of the 6th winter. Spreads salt fine as long as the wheels turn. Not great for built up ice pack on driveway. Works great for normal use at home.

User questions & answers

Question: I’m still waiting on my order that was supposed to be here We’d
Answer: It's seasonal use and will state on the back of the bag directions for use.
Question: Can you use this in Florida
Answer: You can use a Scotts Drop Spreaders available thru amazon, that is what most folks do. I hand throw mine, but I have had years of experience and do it well. I'd say, for you, buy a spreader.
Question: is this product good for St Augustine grass for dallas tx, in month of May
Answer: Well, I'm not sure. I had not noticed it. I am a firm believer in Scotts products . I have seen the transformation of my yard from weed forest when we bought our home to luxury lawn. So I use them every year. I do go to the manufacturer site each year to assure I am using the right products at the right time. They may provide the information you want. I then go to Amazon to buy the product.
Question: What is the N-P-K on this product
Answer: Others are wrong.I use this every two months.my scotts mini broadcast at 2.5 setting.my yard is thick and lush.I also have St Augustine grass.st Augustine likes water but not sitting in it for long periods.it also likes fertilizer.I found the starter applied in the spring and the southern after that the rest of the year works fantastic.Do not use bonus s fertilizer.neighbors have had terrible results with that.As Efraim said do not go by recommend settings.go by half recommend setting.I found 2.5 best on broadcast scotts spreader.also use a liquid weed killer for Augustine grass and only treat problem areas.the grass will grow in thick and choke out future weeds.also at least once a year use a fungicide.scotts disease ex works great.all my neighbors have brown spots i do not.remember here in houston we have very sandy soil so fertilizers dissipate into soil quickly.other areas may require less fertilizing intervals as soil retention may be better.

User questions & answers

Question: How many sq ft does one unit cover
Answer: 1 oz. of product per 1000 sq. ft of lawn. Or 1 quart per 32,000 sq. ft of lawn.
Question: What is the mix per gallon of water
Answer: For lawns use 1 oz per 1000 ft square. 1 32 oz bottle will cover 32,000 ft square. The water per thousand is not so measured as the actual product to be applied. Meaning if you apply a little more water or less water per 1000 ft 2 it will not effect the outcome as long as your use 1 oz per 1000 ft 2. Remember you need to water in the first few inches of the soil and each time you irrigate or when water is applied you will improve soil structure and this will work better.
Question: Does it work
Answer: Unlike others surfactants that just makes standing water thinner to seep through cracks in soil. This works on the physical soil structure. When combined with water it surrounds the soil colloid. Slowly surrounding that colloid and it begins to separate its bond with other soil colloids. it adheres a micro film bubble around the colloid keeping it separate. If you apply and find it didn't work up to your expectation. You most likely either have a severe compaction problem or real dry soil. It should work a little each time you irrigate or receive a rainfall. Depending on your soil condition It should improve soil structure for weeks or months to come after application.
Question: What are the ingredients in this product
Answer: The bottle does not show ingredients but does have a Guaranteed Analysis. It is 60% Ammonium Laurel Sulfate, 40% Other Ingredients. You may be able to find the Ammonium Laurel Sulfate and mix it with water. All I can says is the product has made an amazing difference in my yard. As far as I'm concerned its worth the price to get the results I got.

User questions & answers

Question: said usually ships in 2 days please check and expedite this order when will this ship
Answer: Maxine, EcoScraps Berry Plant Food can be used on all types of edible plants.
Question: I have a fresh new lawn(4 weeks). I have cut twice and feel it could use something. Will this product harm my lawn being that its so new
Answer: All last year, I used this for strawberries I'm growing inside cinderblocks and it really helped them. I didn't realize at first how poor the soil that I planted them in was, and this kept them alive and well. I will say that it is a bit "slow acting" so it's best to add it before a problem starts and keep adding it every few months or so. Also, it works better when worked into the soil a bit, and not as a top dressing (other eco-scraps products suggested it could be used that way).
Question: Is this a fast or slow release nitrogen lawn food or a combination of both
Answer: Per back of bag: New plants: work 1-2" into top 6" of soil. Existing plants: work 1/4 cup into topsoil. Potted plants: 2 ½ tablespoons for 6" pot. 1 cup for 12" pot.
Question: What is the N-P-K ratio printed on the 15,000 sq ft bag
Answer: EcoScraps for Organic Gardening Berry Plant Food, when used according to label directions, is perfectly safe and effective on all edible plants, including blackberries!

Unlock Your Best Scotts Lawn Any Season

When you feed with Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Food, you’re building strong roots that can handle the stresses caused by activity and weather.

Help Your Lawn Absorb Water and Nutrients

Regularly fed lawns absorb water and nutrients better than unfed lawns. Use Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Food to help your lawn be more efficient at using available water.

Question: So anderson's innova 7-1-2 (soy meal) contains amino acids but andersons super juice 7-1-2 does not
Answer: Yes, Innova which is SOY based, granular, organic fertilizer has amino acids. Completely different product from the spray Super Juice.
Question: Cancel other service
Answer: Yes
Question: Could you spray this through a backpack sprayer
Answer: You could but we would not recommend.. here is why. 1) There is a good chance you’ll have clogs. They have TINY holes. 2) You’ll be putting down the mix in a very concentrated spray ratio of water / Super Juice. It’s better to use MORE water which will not only cover the blades of grass but also send some to the roots. Example: Many professional lawn chemicals such as pre-emergents give you recommended gallons of water per 1000 sq ft to use when applying. This not only prevents plant damage but helps deliver the chemicals to the correct areas.
Question: Full strength is .0437lb of n per 1k at a 14-2-4;half rate of 7-1-2 is .0219 lb of n per 1k. i need to apply near 1/8 lb of n per 1k is that
Answer: I have a 4500 sqft yard, the product states that it covers 42000 sqft. 42000/4500 means I can apply this to my yard just over 9 times. 9 applications * .14 lbs of nitrogen = 1.3 pounds of nitrogen for my entire yard for 80 dollars... definitely more expensive than, but i guess you're paying for the micros

How much water to use?

It does not matter if you use one gallon of water to apply or three gallons of water to apply.  You will still be applying the same amount of (dry mix) nutrients to the lawn.  The only difference is that you can take your TIME spraying it on and not be running around like a mad man out of breath at the end.

How much dry mix to use?

Most people will apply at a 14-2-4 ratio in the spring and fall, then switch over to the 7-1-2 during the summer months.  If you want to apply at a 14-2-4 ratio, use 1/4 of a bag.  You can also convert to CUPS if you want. 1 CUP of DRY mix will treat approx. 1500 sq ft at a 14-2-4 rate. If mixing at 7-1-2 ratio then one cup will treat roughly 3000 sq ft.

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of grass is this? Would like to see the back of the bag to see
Answer: How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass.
Question: What variety of grass seed is in this mix (i.e. %s
Answer: Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark
Question: Is this grass okay for Arizona,s dry climate
Answer: No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate.
