Marigolds are a popular and colorful flowering plant commonly associated with gardening and outdoor landscaping. Here is some information about marigolds:
Botanical Information: Marigolds belong to the genus Tagetes and are part of the Asteraceae family. They are annual or perennial plants, depending on the species, and are known for their vibrant and distinctive flowers.
Varieties: There are several different species and varieties of marigolds, but the two most common types are African marigolds (Tagetes erecta) and French marigolds (Tagetes patula).African marigolds typically have larger flowers and grow taller, while French marigolds have smaller, more delicate blooms and are generally shorter in height.
Appearance: Marigold flowers are known for their bright and cheerful colors, including shades of yellow, orange, and red. They often have a pom-pom-like appearance and a distinct, slightly pungent fragrance.
Gardening Use: Marigolds are popular in gardens and landscaping for their ornamental value. They are commonly used in flower beds, borders, and containers to add vibrant colors and beauty to outdoor spaces.
Companion Plants: Marigolds are also valued in gardening for their ability to repel certain pests, such as aphids and nematodes, due to the natural chemicals they produce. Some gardeners plant marigolds alongside vegetables to protect them from insect damage.
Cultural Significance: Marigolds hold cultural significance in various parts of the world. In Mexico, they are often associated with Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and are used to create colorful altars and decorations.
Growing Conditions: Marigolds are relatively easy to grow and are adaptable to different soil types. They thrive in full sun and well-drained soil. They are typically grown from seeds, which can be sown directly in the garden or started indoors and later transplanted.
Maintenance: Marigolds are low-maintenance plants. Regular watering and deadheading (removing spent flowers) can encourage continuous blooming throughout the growing season.
Uses Beyond Ornamental: While primarily grown for their ornamental value, marigolds have also been used in traditional medicine for their potential anti-inflammatory and healing properties.
In summary, marigolds are popular flowering plants known for their vibrant colors, use in gardening and landscaping, and their ability to deter certain garden pests. They are a versatile and attractive addition to outdoor spaces, making them a favorite among gardeners and flower enthusiasts.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these be planted a in a pot? When is a good time to plant the seeds in a pot |
Answer: | Yes, they can. I've grown marigolds from seed in pots as well as in the ground. They're pretty hardy and animals don't bother them; they don't like the scent. |
Question: | Are these an annual or perennial variety |
Answer: | Marigolds are annuals, returning to seed at the end of the growing season when temperatures begin to dip. Often, the seeds left behind will begin to grow again the next season, making the flower appear to be perennial, but there is no guarantee this will happen. |
Question: | When u should plant them |
Answer: | Spring if outside in the ground |
Question: | Are these ones that fight nematodes |
Answer: | I never received the seeds. |

User questions & answers
Question: | One review stated there was rat feces in her bag of calendula. Has the issue been resolved |
Answer: | Yes there was |
Question: | Is this organic? The bag that I received it does not say organic like the picture |
Answer: | I’m not sure what to tell you? The bag I received looks just like the picture and says organic on it. |
Question: | Is this processed in the same facility as gluten or dairy |
Answer: | I have no idea, it's dried flowers, so I doubt it |
Question: | The bag i received also has the sticker with the ca prop 65 statement. can you please advise what chemicals contained in this product are toxic |
Answer: | Hello. No known chemicals are in the product, however, unfortunately these labels are now something that must be put on all products shipping from California whether conventional or certified organic. Basically the situation is that California passed a law which likely had the best of intentions, however the wording is such that it is nearly impossible for any company to comply with. Prop 65 contains a list of about 800 different compounds and chemicals (some of which are naturally occurring). The law is stated in a way that the labels must be present unless companies selling food product within California prove the absence of all 800 of these compounds by conducting tests. Unfortunately testing all of products for all 800 compounds would absolutely sky rocket costs and therefore the prices for customers. If these very expensive tests are not done, the company then must add the label that you have seen on your herbs. Here is a direct link to the CA law: http://www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65/background/p65plain.html |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can marigolds repel bees and wasps |
Answer: | Uhmmm sorry, “The plants do not repel honeybees, Marigolds and honeybees go together like beans and rice. So increase your marigolds and honeybees will come flocking.” And although they don’t attract wasp they don’t repel them either. |
Question: | How many days until they flower |
Answer: | I assume you’ve never grown them? From planting indoors, 2 months before the last frost. Plant outside. So from planting about 2 1/2 months! But planting like this they turn into very large plants, nothing like the store bought ones, I had a couple that were huge last summer. They bloom all summer, needing dead headed. |
Question: | can plant this anytime in cool season period? Oct. - Mar? or when is best and why? what if wait till late winter |
Answer: | Wild types of marigold are perennial plants (live more than 2 years). Cultivated marigold is an annual plant (it completes its life cycle in one year). I am not aware if this is cultivated or wild picked seeds. But depending on which, I would assume one type can withstand colder temps and possibly sprout / grow late winter. I have sprouted with success 100% of the seeds I used, say 30 - 50 during this month. I plan on growing them indoors. as it will drop below freezing here. I used potting mix with a well draining container. (They sprout within 2-5 days for me, 2-3 inches in soil) the temps here atm are 70F during the day 49F at night. I'm growing these in my garage so lets say 65F day - 55F night. I have a light on them constantly but its well below full sun range, so I'm doing a 24/7 test. |
Question: | If I plant them in a bed will they have seeds that will come up next year |
Answer: | No do not buy these! I had to go to the store and buy packets of marigolds because ONE came up out of 50 or more seeds planted! So once again my marigolds are late because these didn’t germinate! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you verify the height of this specific flower |
Answer: | They'll vary depending on soil and climate, (sun, water). Uneducated estimation about 20 to 40 inches. |
Question: | Can you verify the height of this specific flower |
Answer: | Ours are 3 feet and still haven’t bloomed. No where near the listed 6-18 inches. They are covering up all my other flowers and I’m going to have to pull them. Very disappointing. |
Question: | I keep my plants watered/fed, & they have grown to a healthy-looking 2 ft..but nary a blossom. Is there something else I'm supposed 2 do to get flwrs |
Answer: | Sow marigold seed directly in the ground and cover with a thin layer of soil (about 1/8 inch deep). Water thoroughly. Thin to 8-18 inches apart after seedlings have sprouted. Marigolds have a long blooming period, but they can bloom from early summer until frost if the expired blossoms are deadheaded regular to prevent the plant from going to seed. |
Question: | Is it too late to plant in August |
Answer: | If you live in a warm climate or greenhouse it’s not to late. |

MEXICAN MARIGOLD COOL MIX
An annual flower with powerful stems that grows 20" tall. Large, yellow, orange, and cream-colored double flowers with diameter 3 to 4". Blooms from June until frost. Used for flower beds and cuttings.
Planting instructions: Marigolds thrive in full sunshine and can often withstand very hot summers. Though they grow in almost any soil, marigolds do best in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging down about 6 inches to loosen it. Remove stones. Sow seeds directly into the garden once the soil is warm in the spring. You can start seeds indoors but they germinate so easily outside that there’s really no advantage. Marigolds sprout within days in warm weather and plants bloom in about 8 weeks. Moisten the soil, then sow seeds 1 inch apart and no more than 1 inch deep. Germination from large, easily handled seeds is rapid, and blooms should appear within a few weeks of sowing. Once the marigolds have established themselves, pinch off the tops of the plants to encourage them to grow bushier. This will keep the plants from becoming leggy and will encourage more blooming. Marigolds don’t require deadheading, but if dying blossoms are regularly removed, it will encourage the plant to continue blooming profusely. Do not water marigolds from overhead. Water at the base of the plant.

OTHER: The Desert Marigold is an heirloom flower that is native to the Southwest US & Mexico. These desert plants love sun & heat, & are completely at home in soil that is rocky, sandy, heavy clay, nutritionally poor, or dry. Their brightly colored yellow petals & can bring a lot of cheer to a dusty dry landscape, or are perfect for any bed, border, rock garden, or container.
This Marigold¡¯s fuzzy silvery foliage grows in a neat clumping / mounding habit with its large 1 ¨C 2¡± flowers held on stalks above. Its bright yellow blooms can begin to open as early as March, continuing all season long into the fall. The nectar riche blossoms will attract bees & butterflies to your garden, & birds will flock to nibble the seeds in the winter months. The Desert Marigold is also a larval host for the Desert Marigold Moth. Their double-petaled ¡°paper daisy¡± flowers are long-lasting on the plants, as fresh cut flowers for a vase, or dried for arrangements.
I did read that the Desert Marigold is likely poisonous to sheep, although supposedly horses & cattle are not affected. This plant does have traditional medicinal uses for humans.
