Types of Ground Cover Plants:
- Perennial Ground Covers: These are plants that return year after year, providing consistent ground coverage. Examples include creeping thyme, sedum, and ajuga.
- Evergreen Ground Covers: These maintain their foliage throughout the year, offering green coverage even in winter.Examples include English ivy, pachysandra, and vinca.
- Flowering Ground Covers: These ground covers produce colorful blooms, adding beauty to your landscape. Examples include creeping phlox, creeping Jenny, and sweet alyssum.
- Native Ground Covers: Native plants are well-suited to local conditions and can be excellent choices for ground cover. They often require less maintenance and water. Examples include native grasses and wildflowers.
Benefits of Ground Cover Plants:
- Weed Suppression: Ground cover plants create a dense mat that helps prevent weeds from taking root and competing with desirable plants.
- Erosion Control: Their root systems help stabilize soil, reducing erosion on slopes and banks.
- Moisture Retention: Ground covers can help retain soil moisture and reduce the need for frequent watering.
- Aesthetics: Many ground cover plants offer attractive foliage and flowers, enhancing the overall appearance of your garden.
- Low Maintenance: Ground cover plants often require less maintenance than traditional lawns, making them a practical choice for busy gardeners.
Planting and Care:
- Before planting, prepare the soil by removing weeds and improving its fertility.
- Follow planting instructions for the specific ground cover plant you choose.
- Water newly planted ground covers regularly until they establish themselves.
- Mulching can help conserve moisture and further suppress weeds.
- Pruning or trimming may be necessary to keep ground covers tidy and prevent them from becoming too invasive.

- Herniaria glabra green carpet rupturewort grows as a low growing perennial in USDA Zones 6 - 10.
- This mat forming carpet only reaches approximately 3 inches in height making it a perfect lawn alternative or ground cover plant.
- Not only can this be used as a lawn alternative, Herniaria gets a tap root on it instead of surface roots so it is very drought tolerant.
- It doesn't need to be mowed and hardly needs watered. Green carpet doesn’t really flower either so it doesn’t attract bees and there is no dead flowers to worry about it.
- Sow 3 - 5 seeds per cell or approximately 5000 seeds covers 100 square feet for lawn alternative or groundcover.
User questions & answers
Question: | What type of sun does this plant prefer |
Answer: | Full sun to partial shade. But in my experience partial shade is favorable for insects like caterpillars, pill bugs and ants and all of them damage the plant badly. However the plant's growth is fast so it helps a lot in this case. And full sun helps it very much. |
Question: | What is the duffrence between ornamental peanut plant and herniaria glabra |
Answer: | This is so good I am about to order about five more packs because it did it's sealed up the yard where I put the first part nicely |
Question: | How winter hardy is this ground cover and how much foot traffic can it withstand |
Answer: | Herniaria is described as being able to withstand light foot traffic. Some of mine are still establishing but I've walked (carefully) on them and even the younger ones weren't damaged. They seem like a fairly resilient plant once established. I've read that this plant is native to mountain areas of Europe where I'd expect it to get pretty cold in the winter. I've planted these for the first time this year in So. CA and haven't see them yet in the winter. Our winters are quite mild. You'll have to research the max limit of their hardiness yourself. Check out what will be an update to my reviewon Amazon for these seeds. Good luck. - Terry |
Question: | How will this hold up to dogs |
Answer: | A couple of things. These seeds did NOT end up growing the plant I previously knew as Herniaria Glabra (based on several labeled H. Glabra plants I bought at my local nursery). Having said that, I actually really love whatever plant this is. It's held up to dog pee MUCH better than the plants I purchased labeled H. Glabra (no yellowing despite multiple daily pees). It also held up beautifully over this winter with lots of snow and ice, as well as during our drought last summer. I'll be planting more this year. |

Lush green carpet
Herniaria Glabra is a lovely bright green creeper which spreads effortlessly in all directions filling up to two feet per plant! It is not fussy about soil and will happily grow in poor soil and gravel. This low growing ground cover plant of about 3 inches has one long tap root (as opposed to many surface roots like a Creeping Thyme) which makes it extremely drought tolerant. Green Carpet Herniaria Glabra can grow in full sun or shady locations. Known to be nearly indestructible, Green Carpet Herniaria is an excellent choice for growing between flagstones, growing as a lawn substitute, or a ground cover. The tiny leaves of Herniaria Glabra create a dense evergreen carpet, becoming bronze or red colored in winter adding even more interest.

Vinca minor (Periwinkle) is a popular flowering groundcover for zones 4-9. It loves shade or partial sun and grows well in most soils and works well for erosion control. It grows to reach approximately 4-6" tall (and will spread up to 18" at maturity) with small, glossy green leaves periwinkle blue flowers mostly. It flowers predominately in the spring/early summer although I've seen the occasional flowers during colder weather months. You will receive 50 bare root plants which will contain approximately 2-6 branches per plant. This is an average; the total number will depend on the time of year and the particular bed that is being dug the week of your purchase. Since it grows a bit differently in every bed and some plants are more established than others, it will vary. You may see some plants with only two branches but if you do, rest assured that I have included extra to make up for the difference. Sometimes, you may get a clump that counts as one just because that's the way it was dug and wants to stay. I recommend spacing them 6" apart in a zigzag pattern but you can choose to adjust that depending on how fast you want it to fill in. I recommend giving the roots a good watering upon arrival and planting them immediately. Water well for the first few weeks.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this type of vinca work in window boxes along with other plants |
Answer: | It might. I guess my only concern might be due to it's extensive root system, it may tend to choke out any other plants/flowers you might have in the window box. It sure would look nice though if all could coexist. |
Question: | We have a large area to cover that will be in full sun (in the seattle area). should i wait and plant these in september or can i plant them now |
Answer: | Hi - I checked your average temps and they seem to be mild (mid 70's to low 80's with evening temps in the 50's) for late July to August. As long as the area is located where you can handle watering until the plants establish their new roots, you should be good to plant at this time. If the area is beyond supplemental watering, it would be better to wait for a period when there will be more/frequent rainfall. Also, putting a light layer of straw (not hay) over the plants after planting will work to keep the plants safe and limit moisture evaporation until the root system establishes a stronghold. Hard rainfall, harsh winds, wild animals and pets are notorious for uprooting freshly planted plants and the straw helps to protect them. |
Question: | How will these do in Texas? 55% sun. When would be the best time to plant |
Answer: | 55% sun I think is good. I live in West Virginia zone 6. I think Vinca is much better than Ivy maybe Google to check the zone hardiness for Texas. This supplier is reasonable and plants have been very healthy. I have ordered 3 times. I have planted in August. September and in May. You WILL need yo water well u till established a bit. They will give you directions. |
Question: | Do I need to unwrap each bundled plant somehow (i.e., cut the shoot wrapped around it)? Or can I leave them with the loop wrapped around |
Answer: | You need to unwrap/untwist each bundle to separate the individual plants. Undo the shoot wrapped around the bunch and then gently pull them all apart. There will be multiple plants in each bundle. |
- Creeping thyme is a beautiful, dwarf, ground cover plant which blooms with dense red flowers for many months.
- When looking for the perfect ground cover seed, look no further than red creeping thyme. This variety is known as Magic Carpet and grows in USDA zones 4 - 8.
- Thymus serpyllum seeds are ready for planting. Keep seeds continually moist until germination which may mean watering several times a day for short intervals to keep seed continually moist. This perennial groundcover plant will give you years of color.
- The most common error in germination failure is planting the seeds too deep or not watering enough. Seeds need to stay moist continually until germination!
- Many people consider this to be an elfin thyme since it is so dwarf only growing around 2 inches in height. Sow 500 seeds for every 10 SF of ground cover you want to plant.

Question: | I live in Fresno CA where it gets very hot and dry in summer; will this thrive |
Answer: | I doubt it! I couldn't even get mine to ever do much beyond barely sprout and then promptly die. |
Question: | sun or shade |
Answer: | partial sun....and partial shade. Ours is on the south side of the house....where it gets afternoon sun....but shade for the rest of the day |
Question: | In fl panhandle area, i have acidic soil. will this thrive in mostly shade with my heat and soil condition |
Answer: | No, it's zoned 4-8 so you're way above that and too hot. And it's not a shade plant, so it won't even survive in your shaded areas. I wish I could copy a link on here but Amazon would remove it. You might try doing an internet search for shade plants for Florida. There's a good list on the University of Florida gardening site. The only one i know for sure that will survive in mostly shade is Mondo grass, but there's a seed shortage this year and we weren't able to find any. |
Question: | can i kill my grass with it i want the grass dead and this stuff growing in the whole yard i hate cutting grass lol |
Answer: | It won't kill the grass and weeds will grow up through it (dandelions, clover, etc.). Once it is established it does keep new grass from starting to grow in it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could the seeds be spread now in fall (Kentucky) for spring growth |
Answer: | Not sure about that, I planted the seeds in DC in the late spring and followed watering instructions, but the seeds never sprouted or grew moss. |
Question: | will it grow in sandy soil |
Answer: | These seeds didn't work for me. They may work for you, but after planting these teeny, tiny seeds, none of which came up, I bought the plants in a greenhouse and put them in before a rain. Moss doesn't need specially prepared soil My soil is more clay-based, and it does take off and come back from year to year for me. But also, grass tends to grow in between. You have to keep up with it. But I do like the tiny flowers that come up on each mound. |
Question: | Will this take over the are it is planted in? Can it be in full sun |
Answer: | My seeds only sprouted with in crevasses in areas that get no sun at all. I tried to plant a blanket area but moss grows where it wants. |
Question: | If i decide to sow my whole yard with these seeds how often will we have to mow it? Or will it need mowing? And will it come back yearly |
Answer: | No need to mow. It only grows a couple of inches high. Yes it will come back year after year. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I live in Vegas. Is this clover a option for the heat here |
Answer: | It grows fine for me in central Virginia, where it gets pretty hot, but our heat is much more humid. I think plants like it much better at 90F with a dew point of 80 than at 105 with a dew point of 45. |
Question: | I live in north Georgia when should I plant this |
Answer: | I live in west central FL. Planted last year for our bees after the frost was gone, came up fast but never flowered so I let the chickens eat it up. |
Question: | Is this a medium or mammoth variety |
Answer: | This is a medium variety. It didn't do well last year because of the late season planting, but is coming up beautifully this spring. |
Question: | How tall does this grow? I live in Northern Utah, is this a good environment for this type of clover? Does it spread out on it's own, pervasive |
Answer: | It isn't very invasive and grows to the height of lawn grass, but in some areas it can become leggy. According to your growing area, it may be considered a perennial or an annual. In the southern United States, it is considered a winter annual. Our home was built upon old quarry land and the lawns are nutrient poor. I purchased this as a fix for areas where we had taken down trees and areas with poor soil. I like the color interest in the yard and the bees and butterflies love it. I plan to put more down next spring. |

Question: | Do these look like grass at first? The seeds I planted looked like grass and what has grown so far also looks like grass |
Answer: | The seed is tiny and looks nothing like grass seed. If the seed looked like grass you need to check your label and make sure you received the right product. We package the seeds in house and it's packaged in a completely separate location with these only being sold in small packets, packaged by hand, whereas grass seed is done in a giant hopper by the pound in large bags. If your package says dichondra silver falls, then that's definitely what you got. That being said, yes at first it can look like grass. |
Question: | How many Dichondra - Silver Falls would you put in a hanging basket?thank you, Jane |
Answer: | It depends on the growing conditions. In warm, bright weather it may grow 6" per week. The trailing nature of the plant allows you to bury its branches in the growing media and those will readily sprout also. Over the course of a growing season on Zone 7 a single plant could easily cover 50-100 square feet if you spread it around. Within or pruning it can be kept in check. It works great in hanging pots where it can trail several feet over the rim of the container. If you are frugal, a single plant can do the job in a few weeks. If you are in a hurry or growing in less tha optimum conditions you might want to put a few if using a 14" or larger pot. |
