13 best anvil pruners
Anvil pruners are a type of hand tool commonly used in gardening and lawn care for cutting branches and stems. They are often associated with hedge clippers, shears, and scissors, as they serve a similar purpose in trimming and shaping plants. Anvil pruners are an essential tool for maintaining the health and appearance of various plants in your garden or yard.
Here are some key characteristics and features of anvil pruners:
Cutting Mechanism: Anvil pruners use a specific cutting mechanism that involves a sharp blade pressing against a flat, hard surface (the anvil) to make the cut. This design is effective for cutting thicker branches and stems.
Versatility: Anvil pruners are versatile tools suitable for cutting a wide range of plant material, including deadwood, live branches, and dense shrubs. They are particularly useful for cutting through tough, woody stems.
Durability: Anvil pruners are typically robust and durable, designed to withstand repeated use and exposure to outdoor conditions. They are constructed with high-quality materials, such as stainless steel blades and sturdy handles.
Safety: When using anvil pruners, it's important to exercise caution, as the design can crush plant material rather than delivering a clean, sharp cut. This can potentially damage the plant and make it more susceptible to disease.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as sharpening the blade and oiling the moving parts, is essential to keep anvil pruners in optimal working condition.
Ergonomics: Many modern anvil pruners come with ergonomic handles to reduce strain and fatigue during prolonged use. Comfortable grips and shock-absorbing features can make the pruning process more comfortable.
Types: Anvil pruners come in various sizes and styles to suit different gardening tasks. Some models have long handles for extended reach, while others are designed for precision pruning in tight spaces.
Safety Features: Some anvil pruners have safety locks or mechanisms to keep the blades closed when not in use, preventing accidents.
In summary, anvil pruners are a valuable tool for gardeners and landscapers, particularly when dealing with thicker branches and stems. They are a key component of the hand tool arsenal for maintaining the beauty and health of gardens and outdoor spaces. Proper care and caution should be exercised when using anvil pruners to ensure effective and safe pruning.

User questions & answers
Question: | Which is better. Fiskers soft grip bypass pruner or the hr Fiskers power level anvil pruners |
Answer: | Depends on the purpose and the user. For myself I like the anvil pruners for heavier stuff, but my wife likes the bypass pruners. (We run a seasonal florist business). |
Question: | What is the the overall length and width (at the handles) - the latter so I can judge if my hand will span it easily |
Answer: | Open(ready to cut): handles measure 4.9" to 3" toward the blade. The length of the grip is 4.25". Closed in the cut complete position as pictured, the handles span 2". |
Question: | How to lock/unlock this pruner |
Answer: | It has this latch about where your thumb is (if you are right handed) which you push into a notch on the back of the blade. You need to push it firmly, with your thumb, to engage it. It disengages easily by squeezing the handles and pulling it out by sliding the thumb over the latch. Although not part of your question, a negative I have with the pruner is this notch should be larger as the latch occasionally disengages while in my pocket. |
Question: | Can you buy extra blades for this |
Answer: | i would imagine the blade would be as much as the entire tool. the cutting edge is a solid part of the design but Fiskars would be your go to for answers. I would like to know what the answer may be as well. please repost your findings for us all here who has purchased this pruner. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the difference between the F30/F31 and the F |
Answer: | There isn't a model F30/31. Maybe there was a F30 at one time, but not now, just a F31. Nice pruners. I own two of them. |
Question: | Hi! will these work on branches over 1" in diameter? thanks + happy holidays |
Answer: | Yes. I would say they work as well on thicker branches as any small hand shears I have ever used. That said, it depends entirely on your hand strength and the hardness of the wood--since they are short there is little leverage advantage. I would say I can cut a 1.5" live fir branch pretty easily, but my wife would have some trouble over an inch. And with really hard wood an inch might be about the limit... |
Question: | Which replacement blade fits this pruner? i can't even tell how long the spring should be cuz i lost mine. amazon offers a few but none say for f |
Answer: | Go on gemplers.com i think they might sell replacement parts for these pruners. |

How to choose the right garden pruner, Bypass or Anvil?
- With a bypass cutting tool, you draw a curved or straight blade past another blade — this creates a scissor-like motion that works well for cutting live green plants. The spongy, firm outer wall surrounding the stem yields easily to that bypass motion.Such as our product GPPS-1002, GPPS-1003 and GPPS-1004.
- With an anvil cutting tool, you bring down a straight blade against a wide anvil usually made of steel or hard rubber. Anvil pruners are better suited for dead and dried-out plants — the crushing motion causes the brittle stem to kind of explode and separate.Such as our product GPPS-1001 and GPPS-1005.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the blade sharpened on both sides so it stays centered as it cuts |
Answer: | No, the blade fits into a rubbery grove in the other side, but is very sharp and stays centered fine. |
Question: | Are these made in the USA |
Answer: | There aren't any markings as to where they are made. Seem to be of good quality and make a nice clean cut. |
Question: | are these shears reliable? -- Long term use of the blade will rust or blunt |
Answer: | I bought a cheaper model made by Gonicc 20 years ago. They were the most reliable shears I ever had, I cut many green brier and shrub with them; I still use them. They had a hard plastic handle, it cracked and I reinforced it with metal and continue to use them. They have not rusted but I do not leave them in the weather. I bought the new pair because of the name, they are made of metal. These have the characteristics of the first pair but they are metal and more ergonomic. They are great shears so far but I haven't had them a year yet. I recommend them highly. |
Question: | Damage the little green stems of the roses |
Answer: | Hi l have roses in my garden also , and use the Gonicc 8 pruning shears . I have not had any problem when using them to prune . They are new l recently bought them and so far am impressed with them they are light weight compared to the brand l used to buy. For me that is important as l have a arthritis and it use to really limit my time in the garden with the heavier shears. That Gonicc shears make it so much easier and they kept their edge. I hope this helps answer your question. |

RATCHET PRUNING SHEARS - 5x MORE CUTTING POWER
EFFORT LESS CUTTING
The ratcheting mechanism's settings multiply your hand's power, so that you don't have to do the work - the pruning shears do it for you. They slice through much thicker branches than conventional pruners, and they're very easy on your hands. Because they work like a ratchet, they never get dull. The extra power of the ratchet action makes these pruners ideal for heavy jobs.
HOW RATCHET ANVIL PRUNING SHEARS WORK
Anvil pruners have one sharp blade normally the top blade and a flat, non-cutting blade, or "anvil" at the bottom. When you squeeze the handle, the sharp top cutting blade is brought down on the branch you're cutting, and the anvil holds that branch in place so that the cut can be completed.
RATCHET ACTION - 5 TIMES THE POWER
The ratcheting mechanism's settings multiply your hand's power by up to 5 times, so that you don't have to do the work - the pruning shears do it for you. As you cut through a branch, the ratcheting mechanism clicks and moves to the next setting, providing ever-increasing pressure as you cut.
PERFECT FOR SMALLER HANDS AND WOMEN
Pruning can tire the strongest hands, but if you are already starting out at a disadvantage with carpal tunnel or arthritis, or have smaller hands, you should definitely consider a ratchet pruning shear.
100% CUSTOMER SATISFACTION GUARANTEE
Order with confidence! Backed by the Gardenite 100% customer satisfaction guarantee.
- ★★★★★ EFFORTLESS CUTTING - The ratchet in the pruner is a clever extra mechanism to make light work of tough cuts. As you squeeze ratcheting pruning shears, they latch so you can release and squeeze again, performing the cut in easy steps rather than one go. As you cut through a branch, the ratcheting mechanism clicks and moves to the next setting, providing ever-increasing pressure as you cut.
- ★★★★★ 5 TIMES THE POWER - The ratcheting mechanism's settings multiply your hand's power by up to 5 times, so that you don't have to do the work - the pruning shears do it for you. With
- ★★★★★ HIGH QUALITY HARDENED STEEL BLADES - Heat treated and hardened carbon steel blades are ultra strong, will last longer and are less likely to nick or need frequent sharpening. Coated with non-stick Teflon that resists sap and other sticky materials.
- ★★★★★ ERGONOMIC COMFORTABLE DESIGN - If you intend to prune frequently, you'll appreciate the way that a ratchet pruner will reduce wrist strain, require less pressure to cut, and generally make the pruning experience much more enjoyable. If you do a lot of pruning, this can make a huge difference in hand fatigue. Ideal if you are already starting out at a disadvantage with carpal tunnel or arthritis, or have smaller hands.
- ★★★★★ 100% CUSTOMER SATISFACTION GUARANTEE - Order with confidence! The Gardenite 100% customer satisfaction guarantee means exactly that. We will fix any problems quickly and to your 100% satisfaction every time! We are always available to help our customers. Our customer service record is unmatched!
User questions & answers
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | Contact the manufacture |
Question: | Should they be oiled? They are wonderful for my small arthritic hands |
Answer: | Hi Leon,Yes, they are great for small snips like deadheading flowers. My wife uses them all the time in her flower garden. This is one of the great things about them that if you open the jaws slightly, like the size of a blossom stem, they do not engage the ratchet mechanism. And yet they can cut one inch branches. (That is pushing it a bit but I certainly have done many 1" branches.)The light weight makes them good for more delicate jobs as well. Thanks for asking!Paul Grimm |
Question: | what SIZE branch/ other is it meant to cut ????? safe MAXIMUM ?????? mam |
Answer: | This is a great question! When you open the pruners wide to make a large cut and then squeeze the handles, the pruner makes it about 1/3 of the way through the branch, release and depress again and it goes about 2/3's through and on the final "stage" or "squeeze", the branch is finally cut through. Each of these three squeezes or 'Stages" takes less hand pressure to complete and this is the purpose of the ratchet mechanism, to make pruning easier for each cut. Occasionally it will take four stages or cuts to complete. Bottom line, easier on the hands, and this is the whole purpose of this tool, to make hard cuts easier and reduce pressure and strain on the hands. Check out the pictures in the upper left hand corner to see this process. And thanks for asking! |
Question: | Could not get them to close again. Tried every combination of squeezing and sliding but they would not stay closed. Suggestions |
Answer: | I am left-handed and found no problem. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have been using a lemon picker with basket although when I really have to reach a lemon and "pull" I lose several flowers. Would this work also |
Answer: | I would recommend using BYPASS loppers (such as Corona's WL3351 26" wood handles or SL4150 29" aluminum handles) for a more precise cut if you are trying to avoid flower loss and need the reach of long handles. Corona also manufactures a variety of high quality hand pruners, such as the BP3130, if you want to get even closer to what you are cutting. If you are cutting many lemons off lots of trees, you may also want to consider Corona's Orchard bypass loppers. |
Question: | Where manufactured |
Answer: | In Answer to your question: "After moving from our 6th Street location early in 2000s, we shut down our forging processes due to increasing economic pressures and built our new manufacturing facility in Mexico. Customers still wanted good quality tools from Corona, however we saw the trend beginning to shift away from those willing to spend more on a tool made in the US in favor of lower-priced tools . We felt the shift in our business and like 90% of US manufacturing, had to look at alternative solutions to maintain our distribution partners and still be competitive in the marketplace. Mexico offered tremendous opportunities to control our product manufacturing processes and brand, while other parts of the world filled in our line for competitive market needs and completeness. The simple answer is no. During the changing economy in the early 2000s, Corona merged with our parent company, Bellota, which has been a family-owned business located in Spain, with over a century of experience in the tool business. It was an ideal partnership for us as they share the same core values as Corona. With our partnership, we are able to increase our purchasing power, buying many of the same parts for our tools, as well as utilize the seven manufacturing facilities located across the globe from our parent company. As family-oriented businesses, we source tools from suppliers throughout the world, never losing site of our commitment to quality. We have earned a reputation among overseas suppliers that are too picky on quality and we will not sacrifice the reputation of our brand which has taken a century to build. Any tool that bears the Corona brand must first exceed our expectation of quality and offer the lasting performance that we expect, season after season. It provides a balance of making quality tools, at competitive prices, within the global economy that we live in today. Corona has been supporting the USA in one way or another since we began in the 1920s. This is just another chapter in our history that has changed over time as we continue to support Americans by providing jobs for those in our plants and providing quality tools that exceeds our users expectations from our brand. |
Question: | where is this manufactured |
Answer: | Not quite sure, but it’s supposed to be UK product. So far it’s a very good one. |
Question: | My cutting task involves cutting branches ranging from 1.5" to 1.75" medium hardness. Will this lopper do the job with ease |
Answer: | This anvil lopper is designed to cut branches up to 1.5" in diameter. The anvil blade is best used on dead wood, as the blade and anvil tend to slightly crush the branch as it is cutting. The bypass style blade, or as mentioned in another response, a hand saw, is ideal for cutting larger live branches. My uncle uses this lopper for clearing trails and really likes how easily it cuts. Corona's FL 3460 is the bypass version of this lopper and the SL 4364 is an alternative, that offers a larger cutting capacity. Thanks for the question. |

Answer: | Sorry, there is no replacement blade for this product. |
Question: | What is the limited lifetime warranty? My 8/18/19 pair stopped working |
Answer: | I don't know what the warranty says, but it should last longer than a year I would think, unless you used them extensively during the year. But I would think that with normal wear and tear it should work longer than a year. |
Question: | Country of manufacture |
Answer: | I don't know. It is not written on the tool. It is a very good ratchet pruner though. |
Question: | How do you tighten the rivets? Mine are loose |
Answer: | I would take a nail set and hammer on solid surface will tighten them up in a second |

User questions & answers
Question: | How can i get mine repaired |
Answer: | I would say it will work on some fish. Smaller fish such as bass and trout should work well but large fish with tougher fins might be a struggle. Also, these aren't stainless steel so rust could be a problem. |
Question: | Is it also for cutting for small diameter also, like flowers |
Answer: | You can cut over an inch diameter my rotating the cutter with open jaws around the branch. The sharp cutting blade will slice through the branch. |
Question: | Just exactly what are the "3 Stage Actions"? What does each "stage" do |
Answer: | Amazon's product description (as of 2014/11) now states: "The 9109 Bypass Pruner is made in China." Along with: "Fiskars is a global company with manufacturing locations all over the world, including several places in the US. Many of Fiskars' blades are stainless steel. The blade on the 9109 is a coated, high carbon steel blade." Seems like this model has seen significant cost-cutting over the years, maybe too much... |
Question: | Can left-handed people use these |
Answer: | Bypass loppers or pruners have a stainless steel curved blade that uses a scissors action to pass next to, not on top of, the lower surface, sometimes called the hook, designed to catch and hold the branch while the cutting blade comes down. The cutting blade of anvil-style pruners comes down onto the center of a soft metal or hard plastic lower surface, called the anvil or table. Bypass pruners offer a cleaner cut, as the blade slices all the way through the stem. Source: http://farmerfredrant.blogspot.com/2009/08/anvil-versus-bypass-pruners-some.html |
Product description
The first time you try Fiskars PowerGear Super Pruner/Lopper, you’ll be amazed — but it’s not magic, it’s gears. Fiskars patented gear technology multiplies your leverage to give you up to three times more power on every cut. This means you can power through thick branches that you wouldn’t be able to cut with traditional pruners and loppers. It also means that Fiskars Super Pruner can be smaller and lighter than other loppers, reducing strain on your hands, wrists and muscles when you’re reaching to cut a branch or have a lot of branches to cut. Like many of Fiskars PowerGear tools, our Super Pruner has won the Ease-of-Use Commendation from the Arthritis Foundation. But it’s not just for people with arthritis — it’s for anyone who appreciates tools that make work easier
The small and lightweight Fiskars 15-inch PowerGear anvil lopper provides plenty of leverage and strength for most small shrub and tree pruning jobs around the yard. The tool has a 1-1/4-inch cutting capacity and a unique PowerGear design that maximizes leverage for easier cutting. The handles are made of strong reinforced nylon, and the blade features rust-resistant stainless steel, ensuring a long life of service. Weighing only 13-ounces, the lopper is an ideal choice for the weekend gardener who wants to conserve strength for other pursuits. The unit comes with a limited 10-year warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have pair of loppers but the blade needs to be sharpened, how does one sharpen |
Answer: | Can be done with a dremmel tool with a small grinding wheel. A small sharp flat file, a hand knife sharpening stone, or other similar tools |
Question: | What country is this made |
Answer: | Taiwan. We have our original one, it was made in Finland. Looks the same but time will tell if it is as good. Original one is more than 15 yes old. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How heavy are these loppers |
Answer: | Not really heavy at all |
Question: | Where can one get replacement blades assuming that blades are replaceable |
Answer: | I just got a brand new replacement set after going to the Fiskars website product page and clicking on Warranty Claim. Sent a picture with my claim of the broken blade about 2 weeks ago and forgot about it and was surprised to find some new loppers in my box. I think it would be cool if I could just have 2 or 3 blades on hand, but I guess you can't complain when they do no questions asked replacement.
