User questions & answers
Question: | Leather or nylon sheath? Reviews and product description were conflicting |
Answer: | It only comes with the fabric. Cheapest way to make hoops is to buy a roll of heavy gauge wire from a farm supply store and cut your own. Orschelens has a roll for about 12.00. One circle cut off the roll will make a row hoop about 3' wide or so and a fabric that's 7ft wide should cover it. Buy the wider fabric and you can also cut it too size if you want to. Just be sure you have enough to pile dirt or something heavy along the sides of the rows so the wind wont blow it away. |
Question: | Where was this product manufactured |
Answer: | I don’t. I live in New York and it stays on all winter. Water goes through it so no need to water. I use it mainly to prevent deer from eating the branches. |
Question: | I just received the machete and it looks and feel great. Does anyone know the type of metal its made from |
Answer: | Not sure. We live in the desert in West Texas, it dropped into the 20’s and my plants were fine, but not sure about colder temperatures |
Question: | Can it kill a walker |
Answer: | I put one around a large hanging fern and one around a spider plant. Both were in 16”diameter moss lined hanging baskets- hope that reference helps. I would measure but they’re still packed away |

Question: | how thick is the actual blade/s |
Answer: | it just explains how to use it, i would recommend to just youtube it, |
Question: | Is the saw functional or just decoration like most saw back machetes |
Answer: | I think so. 1000 isn't the most course grit I have and 3000 isn't the finest, but unless your blades are seriously nicked up you don't need any courser. And 3000 grit properly used will leave a sharper edge than most chisels have new. |
Question: | what type of metal is used for the blade |
Answer: | Mine were shipped in a box arrived in good shape but I ordered 3 maybe shipped different. |
Question: | what kinds of materials have you cut with the blade/s |
Answer: | Of course, you'll get a new lover for your knife. So don't let your knife longly. Next time I will post a new 3000/8000 grit product,So maybe you'll like it.I need some people to test it at that time. Why not contact me?May be you'll get a free one. And maybe the #10000 will see you soon. It's an option depending on the experience and skills of the individual using the stones to hone or sharpen their knives. There are simple introductions up on my page. All you need is just buy it and use it frequently or you will get the skill quickly. Thank you for your question, have a nice day. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Whats the difference between model 6144 and model 6165 of this machete |
Answer: | I believe there is no 6165. They may have mis-typed it because I don't find it on Ontario's website. I have owned the 6144 for a couple years and have been very happy with it. It doesn't deflect because of blade flex and keeps an edge for a long time. |
Question: | How does it compare to the tramontina machete from Brazil |
Answer: | Both are good in their own way. Tramontina in my opinion is more versatile for cutting a little bit of everything. But this Ontario is definitely a beater that will handle heavier jobs of chopping without having to sharpen the edge often. For lighter work of clearing , get a Tramontina. For heavy duty chopping power get this Ontario. |
Question: | Is this machete actually full tang? Does it feel sturdy or not |
Answer: | yes it is. Very sturdy. I personally have had a few Ontario Knife products over the years and have never been disappointed, especially in their machete department. I would definately recommend this blade. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this actually chip through heavy brush? for as thats what i will use it for |
Answer: | The blade is 18 inches, however, 15 and 3/8 inches is the sharpened length. |
Question: | We live on a lake and cut the cattails down each spring. Will this do the job |
Answer: | Yes. Full Tang. 1095 Carbon Steel. Made In USA. Sincerely, Jacob SurvivalGeek (YouTube) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfRsUPToBXp4ZIre__dJg4A |
Question: | how long is the blade |
Answer: | Gerber used to be a good company, but sadly these days they make a lot of shoddy products that have a history of failure during hard use. This otoh is a quality tool, very good, and certainly worth the money. |
Question: | Is this machete full tang |
Answer: | I have many sharp edged tools for which I care. For those with inward facing or recurved edges I've found rod type sharpeners to work well. For large recurve edged tools such as a sickle, sythe or Yoki I use a large rod such as the Arkansas Sharpeners Superstick Ceramic Rod AC4. Best not to let tool get to dull as it's not an aggressive grit but touch it up after every couple of uses. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why does amazon say its made it china |
Answer: | Unknown, the ones we sell are made right here in Olean, NY. |
Question: | How well is this made ,how durable is it |
Answer: | This is a top quality knife, easy to keep sharp and very durable |
Question: | Why is it so much cheaper here than on the kbar site |
Answer: | You must have saw incorrectly or you were looking at a different knife. These are genuine Ka-bars through Amazon. Very good quality knife. Highly recommend. |
Question: | Is this legal to carry |
Answer: | Obviously state laws are different. In California it would be illegal if it is concealed, but to my understanding if it is holstered in plain view, it is legal. |
Question: | Is there a sheath that you would suggest I buy for this Machete |
Answer: | You can buy all kinds, cheap to ridiculously expensive. If you are concerned about, there are many simple nylon sheaths that you can find on Amazon, sometimes hardware stores carry them, or just Google “machetes” and there are several businesses that sell machetes and machete sheaths, that all they do. Personally, I bought a “Marbles” 18 inch machete sheath here on amazon. I feel kinda dumb, I forgot how much it costs! It’s was very reasonably priced. I say this with absolute sincerity, wouldn’t trade it for kydex, leather, whatever. It’s a well made sewn, and riveted job. Two pouches sewn quite firmly on the front. Its made to take a beating. I’ve a,ready drug mine through a local forest area nearby, where drifters, nutters, lol... all the misfits stealth camp there. You have to walk through about 20 feet of dense thorn vibes before it opens up. It took a beating, but it’s going strong. |
Question: | Does this come with a sheath |
Answer: | It does not come with a sheath , but the great quality of this machete is worth the low price alone. |
Question: | What is the best sharpener for this blade |
Answer: | A flat file, belt sander, or grinder for heavy sharpening (full blade or repairing nicks). A whetstone is fine for a quick touch up in the field. The machetespecialists website has a good tutorial. |
Question: | Is it made in Brazil or elsewhere, like china |
Answer: | Yes it is made in Brazil, not China. Also the steel is of good quality and holds an edge well.... A good quality machete for the $$$ |
