13 best pruners
Pruners are essential hand tools used in gardening and landscaping for cutting and trimming plants, branches, and stems. They are specifically designed to make precise cuts, promoting healthy plant growth and maintaining the aesthetic appeal of gardens. Here's what you should know about pruners and their related categories:
Loppers: Loppers are a type of pruner with longer handles and larger cutting blades. They are ideal for cutting thicker branches and stems that regular hand pruners may not be able to handle. Loppers provide extra leverage, making it easier to trim hard-to-reach areas.
Hand Tools: Pruners fall under the category of hand tools, which are essential for various gardening and landscaping tasks. Hand tools also include items like trowels, shears, and spades, each serving a specific purpose in garden maintenance.
Gardening Lawn Care: Pruners are crucial for maintaining the health and appearance of plants in gardens and lawns.Regular pruning helps remove dead or overgrown branches, encourages new growth, and shapes plants for aesthetic purposes.
Patio Lawn Garden: Patio lawn and garden equipment encompass a wide range of tools and accessories used in outdoor spaces. Pruners are among the tools commonly used in these areas to keep plants, trees, and shrubs well-maintained.
Key features and considerations when selecting pruners include:
- Type: Choose between bypass pruners, anvil pruners, or ratchet pruners, each designed for specific cutting tasks.
- Blade Material: High-quality pruners typically have blades made of stainless steel or hardened steel for durability and sharpness.
- Cutting Capacity: Consider the maximum diameter of branches or stems that the pruners can handle.
- Ergonomics: Look for pruners with comfortable grips and ergonomic handles to reduce hand fatigue during extended use.
- Safety Features: Some pruners have safety locks to prevent accidental cuts and injuries when not in use.
- Maintenance: Regularly clean and oil the blades to keep them sharp and prevent rust.
Pruners are versatile tools that cater to a wide range of gardeners, from beginners to experienced professionals. Proper pruning practices not only improve the overall health of plants but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of your garden or outdoor space.

User questions & answers
Question: | I really can't afford 404 for a pruner and I'm extra small in term of hands. Could you pls suggest something else |
Answer: | This pruner is $45.38 which is not inexpensive, but well worth the money. Handle are not too small for a man's hands, yet still fit nicely in a woman's smaller hands. Don't know where you saw 404 price. That must have been a multi-pack price. |
Question: | The product description says that these are adjustable. How so?--I have very small hands, if they open too wide, my hands will be sore |
Answer: | I ordered these pruners recently and I also have very small hands. I just love them. I am a basket maker and use them to cut all my very heavy materials. I don't know about the adjustable part, but they work very well just the way they are. Good Luck! |
Question: | do they rust |
Answer: | Hi! Tiffany...I just went to my pruner drawer and checked all 6 of the Felco pruners that I have and there is NO rust on them. Of course, I DO NOT LEAVE them "lay around" in my garden after use. I do not clean and polish them, so they do accumulate some plant resins on them...but they are just wonderful in spite of my neglect!! I've used some of them for longer than 25 or 30 years! I've tried other brands before Felco and once used a Felco NEVER bought any other pruners. I've had 73 David Austin English Shrub Roses in my garden in the past...so the pruners have been USED A LOT! Happy Gardening! J.R. |
Question: | Are they OK and comfortable for men's hands also |
Answer: | Hello! Amazonhappy....The Swiss do an excellent job in designing for utility. Unless you have extremely large hands (basketball player?), you will probably find these pruners comfortable for even an extended session of pruning in your garden. I have just compared the handles on my Felco F-6 Classic pruners and my Felco F-2 Classic Pruners...and the handles are the same. The only difference is in the weight of the pruner itself. The F-6 is for lighter pruning, roses, vines, shaping shrubs whereas the F-2 is for larger canes and branches before getting to required "lopper" dimensions. Since I respect my pruners...if I get to a cane or branch too large, I use the F-2 pruner and when I get to the "lopper" sized branch...I stop and get one of my loppers...and I've benefited from that habit, as my pruners continue to serve me well after all these years. There's an old Chinese Proverb: IF YOU WOULD BE HAPPY ALL YOUR LIFE, PLANT A GARDEN." Happy Gardening!! "P.S. I love you "name"...I too, am very happy with the retailing miracle of Amazon!!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the F-8 now made in China |
Answer: | No. I just looked on the new F-8 I bought and it is marked Swiss made. Have been using it and it works great. It was a replacement for one I had for over 25 years. |
Question: | Where are these shears made? Thank you |
Answer: | A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON FELCO- From the Felco Store WebsiteLocated in the heart of the Swiss Jura, between Neuchâtel and La Chaux-de-Fonds, Felco SA is in a region that is famous for its prestigious watch manufacturers - synonymous with quality and manufacturing knowledge. It all began in 1945 when Felix Flisch, using his own drawing board, designed his first forged aluminum pruning shear and manufactured a high-quality and exceptionally durable tool adapted to its user. Time has gone by, but the same spirit and objectives remain.Designed and manufactured in Switzerland, Felco tools are made from the finest materials in accordance with rigorous manufacturing procedures. These tools are appreciated daily by millions of users all over the world. |
Question: | Just received my new pruners. Had to go to Utube to find out how to unlock. The thumb lock for blade is tight. is it ok to oil |
Answer: | Felco is one of the finest pruner made. I have been a professional gardener for 42 years. You may need to slightly loosen the locking screw on the thumb lock. You should have received a tool for doing this with your Felco pruner. You can oil any part of the pruner. If you prune shrubs or trees with a lot of sap, you should clean the sap build on the blades every few hours with a light sand paper and sharpen the blade with a Felco blade sharpener. If you sharpen on a regular basis it will only take a few seconds. Sometimes, like every few months, the pruner should be takin apart and sanded in between moving parts and oiled. I use WD40. |
Question: | I do a lot of gardening but am a med/sm woman. should i get the f6 instead? i have smaller pruning shears but need something for larger cuts |
Answer: | Th Felco F-8 is perfect for my small hands as the leverage it delivers is far better than the typical shears. My Corona are disposed of after receiving the Felco as the Corona has far inferior steel in the blade where it counts the most. The Corona also uses far to many delrin or plastic parts that fall apart in modest use. As mentioned by others, using a Felco lopper for the larger stems is a wise decision. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these be used to comfortably cut through 1/4 inch woody stems |
Answer: | For trimming yes they're amazing. But if your trying to cut a 2-3inch stock then I would suggest a stronger pair |
Question: | How long are the blades |
Answer: | About 2 1/8 inches with the shears closed. When open the tips are 1 1/4 inch apart and 1 11/16 inch from inside where the blades cross to to the tip of each blade. Tip of blades are about 1/32" and where they cross they are 3/8" wide. I like these even better than the Fiscars. |
Question: | What is the difference between straight and curve blade |
Answer: | It gives u a curve so u can trim the flowers better I think because the flowers I trim are curved. I use the straight to clip leaves off in the flower but I think it’s just a preference hope this helps. 🤘🏼 |
Question: | Where are these manufactured |
Answer: | P.R.C When people stopped buying products marked "Made in China" the Products started being marked"P.R.C". (This means Peoples Republic of China) So you now have ANOTHER example of why NOT to buy products from China or disreputable US manufacturers. Shame on you VIVOSUN !!! How to choose the right garden pruner, Bypass or Anvil?
- With a bypass cutting tool, you draw a curved or straight blade past another blade — this creates a scissor-like motion that works well for cutting live green plants. The spongy, firm outer wall surrounding the stem yields easily to that bypass motion.Such as our product GPPS-1002 and GPPS-1003.
- With an anvil cutting tool, you bring down a straight blade against a wide anvil usually made of steel or hard rubber. Anvil pruners are better suited for dead and dried-out plants — the crushing motion causes the brittle stem to kind of explode and separate.Such as our product GPPS-1001.
Attention Please:
We offer the lifetime warranty, if there are any quality problem, please contact us with our Customer Care E-mail [email protected],, send your order number and take some photos of the product to us, we will provide a replacement to you ASAP.

User questions & answers
Question: | country of origen |
Answer: | Country of origin is Korea. |
Question: | Are these made in the US |
Answer: | If you read the description the company that makes these clippers was founded in the U.S. in the 20's and these carry a lifetime warranty. I owned my last pair for over 30 years and last year the screw that holds these shears together finally loosened up and rather than send them in under the warranty, because they still cut fine, I decided to get a second pair. They are worth the money and I highly recommend them! |
Question: | How well does spring stay on? (I had different brand in past in which spring popped off one side or other after most cuts when handles were released |
Answer: | The spring only holds the shears in the closed position. You squeeze them together and pull the catch away fro the clip. It stays free until you are done and then you squeeze the handles together and pull the catch to the clip to keep it closed. |
Question: | Are these made in USA |
Answer: | This is my Grandfather’s old company. They are from Corona, California, my home town. They used to be drop forged and made 100% in the USA, but they have changed the general operations of the company and make their tools in Mexico. While I have family reasons to have multiple opinions, these are amazing tools that work well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you buy a replacement locking tab (red plastic piece |
Answer: | Short answer: Currently, no. ..I have gone thru 2 pair of these. 1st pair lasted 3 years. Second only 3 months. Both had the plastic lock part fail. Outside of that these are great pruners and I use them hard to cut my way thru the thick Southeastern woods. Seems like it'd be such a simple thing to make the part from metal or at least offer replacements. ..Also, while I didn't inquire about a warranty replacement for the first set cause I was satisfied with the use I got from them, I did on the second and they are shipping a replacement. The representative told me "lifetime" in Corona-speak means "for the life of the tool". FWIW.. d:^) |
Question: | have they improved the locking mechanism |
Answer: | As of the last pair I received, they replaced a pair because of the latching mechanism, it still looks exactly the same. I’ve used it a couple times and all seems well but my yard has changed (moved homes) and new yard has not needed as much care. I also formerly used mine in a National Park where I volunteered but this Spring the park has been closed due to the pandemic so again they have not had the usage I would normally give them. |
Question: | How many inches wide will the handles (not the blades) open up to when pruner is unlocked |
Answer: | I’m really not sure. I have been SO disappointed in these pruners. The blades are now rusted shut and they weren’t even in the damp - they were in my garage. |
Question: | Lots of comments about locking mechanism--has the problem been fixed |
Answer: | No. Have four pairs with two different locking mechanisms and neither is what I would call “good”. Bypass pruners seem to offer cleaner cuts than the anvil type but the locking part can be frustrating. |
- The ergonomic handle design is heavy-duty, comfortable, and lightweight. It can reduce stress on your wrist and fits for the small or big hands to ensure maximum cutting comfort and no-slip grip.
- The handle part of the pruning shears made by high-purity PP+TPR plastic, especially the handgrip is very comfortable but also has strong toughness and strength.
- The blade has been sanded to deter tarnish and rust, it's all matched easy-to-use safety lock. The buckle of the bypass pruning shears would also help adjust the blades angle too.
- Those pruning shears could satisfy the need for planting, harvesting, floral, indoor and outdoor planting, greenhouse pruning.
- US-based customer support, 30 days full satisfaction no question asked return period.
User questions & answers
Question: | How do you open the bypass |
Answer: | I'm not sure what you received because mine are like most every other gardening hand tool I have. There's a black plastic part that pivots into a notch at the top of the handle by your thumb. It pivots away from the housing to allow the blades to open and into the housing to lock it. If yours isn;t like that, post a picture of both sides. |
Question: | What kind of warranty is offered on these |
Answer: | Hello, the order will be handled and fulfilled by Amazon, we offer warranty under Amazon's rules, thank you. |
Question: | Where are these tools made |
Answer: | They are made in Taiwan |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are they all metal, even the handles |
Answer: | The handles are metal with a plastic coating. |
Question: | Does the rubber band lock stay on the handle when using? Or does it come off completely |
Answer: | It stays on one side of the handle, which is very useful when you want to store it in the "closed" position by reattaching the other end of the band. It's more of a strong leather-type band rather than a rubber band. |
Question: | Whats the difference between 300l-dx and hp 300 l-dx |
Answer: | I have no idea, but love my pruners, great for small jobs, roses etc.. |
Question: | Is this model made in japan? i know it says origin is japan but i've seen some of those and were just in transit from japan, made else where. thanks |
Answer: | I bought these in August 2019 on Amazon and the tool is not marked where it is made but the box clearly says "Made in Vietnam". I do like the tool but would prefer that ARS would make all of their tools in Japan of the best materials possible which I believe would produce a even better tool instead of cutting corners and having other countries make them to save money. Quality and performance is most important and ARS Japanese made tools are one of the best. |
Product description
The first time you try Fiskars PowerGear Super Pruner/Lopper, you’ll be amazed — but it’s not magic, it’s gears. Fiskars patented gear technology multiplies your leverage to give you up to three times more power on every cut. This means you can power through thick branches that you wouldn’t be able to cut with traditional pruners and loppers. It also means that Fiskars Super Pruner can be smaller and lighter than other loppers, reducing strain on your hands, wrists and muscles when you’re reaching to cut a branch or have a lot of branches to cut. Like many of Fiskars PowerGear tools, our Super Pruner has won the Ease-of-Use Commendation from the Arthritis Foundation. But it’s not just for people with arthritis — it’s for anyone who appreciates tools that make work easier
The small and lightweight Fiskars 15-inch PowerGear anvil lopper provides plenty of leverage and strength for most small shrub and tree pruning jobs around the yard. The tool has a 1-1/4-inch cutting capacity and a unique PowerGear design that maximizes leverage for easier cutting. The handles are made of strong reinforced nylon, and the blade features rust-resistant stainless steel, ensuring a long life of service. Weighing only 13-ounces, the lopper is an ideal choice for the weekend gardener who wants to conserve strength for other pursuits. The unit comes with a limited 10-year warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have pair of loppers but the blade needs to be sharpened, how does one sharpen |
Answer: | Can be done with a dremmel tool with a small grinding wheel. A small sharp flat file, a hand knife sharpening stone, or other similar tools |
Question: | What country is this made |
Answer: | Taiwan. We have our original one, it was made in Finland. Looks the same but time will tell if it is as good. Original one is more than 15 yes old. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How heavy are these loppers |
Answer: | Not really heavy at all |
Question: | Where can one get replacement blades assuming that blades are replaceable |
Answer: | I just got a brand new replacement set after going to the Fiskars website product page and clicking on Warranty Claim. Sent a picture with my claim of the broken blade about 2 weeks ago and forgot about it and was surprised to find some new loppers in my box. I think it would be cool if I could just have 2 or 3 blades on hand, but I guess you can't complain when they do no questions asked replacement. Here's the link to the page as of 10/12/15: http://www2.fiskars.com/Products/Gardening-and-Yard-Care/Loppers/PowerGear-Super-Pruner-Lopper-7972 |
