13 best small garden tillers
Small garden tillers, also known as cultivators or tillers, are essential gardening tools designed to prepare soil for planting and cultivation. They are commonly used in gardening, landscaping, and farming to break up compacted soil, remove weeds, and create a suitable environment for plants to grow. Here are some key points about small garden tillers:
Types of Tillers:
- Front-Tine Tillers: These tillers have tines (blades) located at the front of the machine. They are suitable for small to medium-sized gardens and are easy to maneuver.
- Rear-Tine Tillers: Rear-tine tillers have tines at the back of the machine. They are more powerful and are suitable for larger gardens and tougher soil conditions.
- Cultivators: Cultivators are smaller and lighter than tillers, designed for mixing soil in established gardens and flower beds. They are perfect for maintaining soil texture and aeration.
Features:
- Adjustable Tilling Depth: Most tillers allow you to adjust the tilling depth, enabling you to prepare the soil at the desired depth for different types of plants.
- Width Adjustment: The width between the tines can often be adjusted. Wider widths are suitable for open areas, while narrower settings are useful for tight spaces and between rows of plants.
- Engine Type: Tillers can be powered by electric motors, gas engines, or batteries. Gas-powered tillers provide more power and are suitable for extensive tilling tasks.
Benefits:
- Time and Labor Saving: Tillers significantly reduce the time and effort required to prepare the soil manually, especially in large gardening areas.
- Weed Control: By breaking up the soil, tillers help control weeds by uprooting them and preventing their growth.
- Improved Soil Aeration: Tilling helps improve soil aeration, allowing plant roots to access nutrients and water more effectively.
- Better Seedbed Preparation: Tillers create a fine, crumbly soil texture, providing an ideal seedbed for planting.
Usage Tips:
- Safety First: Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and goggles, when operating a tiller.
- Moist Soil: Tilling is most effective when the soil is slightly moist but not too wet. Avoid tilling in extremely dry or overly wet conditions.
- Proper Technique: Move the tiller in straight, overlapping lines to ensure thorough coverage. Take your time and don't rush the process for the best results.
- Maintenance: Regularly clean and maintain the tiller, including the tines, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
When choosing a small garden tiller, consider the size of your garden, the type of soil you have, and your specific gardening needs. Different tillers are designed for different tasks, so selecting the right one will make your gardening experience more efficient and enjoyable.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can tines be removed for narrower tilling area |
Answer: | yes, but...the tines are an assembly of 3 held to the shaft with a through bolt. If you removed one assembly you could till with just one side, but the tiller is still over a foot wide and the empty shaft is still sticking out even without the tines. this is a powerful machine, I would look at a lighter, narrower tiller if you want to do a more narrow area. |
Question: | Is 13.5 amps too much for a 15 amp circuit |
Answer: | You will be fine on a 15A circuit. Recommendations from the manufacturer are 14/3 (14gauge 3conductor) extension cord for up to 50ft and 12/3 extension cord for up to 100ft. Total length should not exceed 100ft however I'm sure a 10/3 extension cord would be fine for more than 100ft but a 10/3 extension cord would be very expensive. Please be aware that the tiller pulls the most current with the tines are digging deep in the soil and the motor is bogging down and under extreme strain it's possible it might pop the breaker on a 15A circuit. |
Question: | has anyone compared the 12 amp model to the 13.5 amp one? is it worth spending the extra money to get the 13.5 amp tiller |
Answer: | depends on what type soil you have. My 13.5 amp will till our Missouri soil.after a rain, sun baked like concrete |
Question: | what is horse power rating of motor |
Answer: | There's an easy way to calculate the power of an electrical motor. First you multiply the volts times the amps to find the total power in watts, in this case 120 volts times 13.5 amps equals 1,620 watts. Next, you figure in an average 85% efficiency for electric motors to get 1,377 watts. (It's fair to assume this low-cost AC appliance uses a typical AC induction motor which is probably more like 80% efficiency, and the manufacturer doesn't claim anything better, but let's give them the benefit of the doubt since there are some electric motors that exceed 95% efficiency.) Then, you consider that you'll always be using this while plugged into an extension cord. Let's say it's the typical $30 14 gauge, 50 foot cord that's common (but be aware that longer or shorter cords, or higher or lower wire gauge, will change this) and factor in another 3% drop in power, so you have 1,335 watts at the machine. Now, 1335 watts is about 1.8 horsepower. If you're comparing this to the popular Mantis 16 inch tiller, with a 4-stroke Honda GX35 gas engine, that has 1.3HP at 7,000rpm. So on paper, this is 38% more powerful, but there are lots of other differences. It has a very different tine shape, but of course caring for a gas engine and getting virtually unlimited portability, vs. a maintenance-free electrical motor while tied to a power cord, are also big differences. TL,DR: This is more powerful in most cases than its gas competitors, and that's important but it's not the only consideration. |

Question: | What is the hight and width of the clawed part |

User questions & answers
Question: | does anyone have any idea on what gauage cord i should use 16 or 14 i need 100 ft cord thanks |
Answer: | DO NOT use just any cord as others have stated. Using a cord that is too light reduces the amperage supplied to the motor which can harm it. From website https://www.askthebuilder.com/extension-cords-size-chart/ Any 16-gauge cord between 0 and 100 feet long will adequately handle tool loads up to 10 amps. Any 14-gauge cord between 0 and 50 feet long will adequately handle loads between 10 and 15 amps. If your tool load is between 10 and 15 amps and the length of the cord is 50 to 100 feet, you need a 12-gauge cord to safely power any tool. There is a whole lot of other good info on that site about extension cords that is worth reading. |
Question: | How easy/hard is it to hold lever down? I have bad hands |
Answer: | It is not hard at all... |
Question: | where can i buy replacement tines for this tiller |
Answer: | I have been using mine for almost 2 years, I called the 800 number the replacement tine cost $5.00 plus shipping. They ship very quickly and their people are very friendly and helpful. Compare this price with other tillers. You'll be glad you bought this one, I have used a Mantis and this works as well for a third the price... |
Question: | We have a lot of clay mixed in with our soil and can get pretty hard. Anyone use this tiller to break up clay |
Answer: | I've done a lot of gardening. I have clay soil so I either amend it or replace it with a mushroom soil mix and everything loves it. Pertaining to the clay soil which I was faced with the challenge of removing in the beds before replacing it and I mean to tell you trying to get through it dry you may as well be trying to dig up cement. (hyperbole) I learned the hard way about the easy way to do it. Use a sprinkler many hours before you dig or rototill it and deeply moisten the ground. After the water settles in and you now have soft soil, not wet, and not dry hard you can use this roto tiller to dig through it. The more moisture, the easier it is to dig, but if it is wet working in it is a mess. It won't take you long experimenting to see just what the right degree of moisture is and how long it takes to apply and let set up. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Other than the motors how are the tc70001 and the tc&0065 different |
Answer: | The blade has teeth and very sharp point but really only good for piercing and cutting through drywall. Cutting through wood would certainly dull or damage the blade quickly. |
Question: | I am a 84 yr old lady in good heath. Wondering if I would be able to control this is soft soil |
Answer: | The blade labelled "metal" is like a standard hacksaw blade, it will cut though small nails with enough effort. |
Question: | Can the outer set of tines be removed to provide a narrower cut |
Answer: | There are no instructions. You simply slide the blade back a little and apply pressure to the side of the blade back where the handle is to make the blade pop out of the notch. Then you rotate the blade out of the holder. There are YouTube videos that demonstrate the process. |
Question: | Can this cut through short grass or will I need to prep my yard more |
Answer: | Yes, these are bi-directional blades. They cut on the push and pull stroke. There is one coarse-pitch blade labeled "wood" and the other fine-pitch blade is labeled "metal". I use the wood blade for both wood and sheetrock cutting. The "metal" blade is similar to a standard hacksaw blade. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the wheels go up or do they stay down |
Answer: | The wheels are adjustable. This allows the height for range of tilling depth of up to 5" for even cultivating. |
Question: | What is the difference between the 27072 model and the 27012 model. Is one just a newer version |
Answer: | i called Greenworks directly on this exact question, I owned the previous model 27012 and while it dug up my lawn for fescue reseeding in 2012, it wasn't that effective with kick backs at time and generally harder to use.New Model 27072 is significantly improved, no more curved V bar, staight for better stability, the back wheel positioning is better, the RPM's have increased still being a 8 amp motor and the weight decresed by 4 lbs 26 now not 30 as before. Tines the previous model tines were more cultivating vs tilling, 6-8, new model more till spike 10-12. |
Question: | Will this work in rocky soil |
Answer: | Yes - it works well in rocky soil. The garden bed I bought it for had a lots of small rocks, some broken pottery, pieces of brick!, trash and a bunch of roots from some dead shrubs. I found that the tiller will freeze up whenever I hit something it couldn't handle. I would just let go of the bar, clear the tines if needed, and continue tilling. It even helped me clear the roots of the dead shrubs so I could finally get it out of my flower bed! |
Question: | I am notoriously poor at following instructions. What am I up against if I buy this tiller |
Answer: | Some instructions from the manual are wrong. The manual tells you to do something and the diagram showing you how to do it is showing you something different. I was very confused, so I called the help number in the manual, and they confirmed that this was wrong, and told me how to do it correctly. The procedure was actually very simple, and the people helping me were patient and explained clearly how to put it together. It was all done in a few minutes. The tiller works well, I have used it many times, and it is strong and durable. It does a good job. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does this work on weed sprouts |
Answer: | It can shave it at best, seeing as though the teeth can cut wood. I’d suggest either a jig saw or a coping saw for something like that. |
Question: | How long is the handle? I'm 6'3 and get tired of bending over |
Answer: | Sorry, don't know what a rip saw is. All I know is that it effectively cuts all that I need it for. |
Question: | I can't bend over to weed anymore. Does the garden weasel work pretty good for weeds |
Answer: | The FatMax does not come with a sheath. |
Question: | is it made of plastic |
Answer: | If you want a clean cut, score a groove with a utility blade, then cut approximately 1/4" inside that score line. |

Discovering Garden Weasel
The Garden Weasel was 'discovered' in 1974 at the Cologne Hardware Show in Germany, as it was being demonstrated by its inventor, Gerhardt Guetschow. The tool, and even its unusual name, Garden Weasel, caught the eye of Gordon T. Beaham III, who was president of Faultless Starch Company at the time. It was a serendipitous moment, as Beaham was 'in the market' for new products and ways to diversify his company; noting that 'people may not be starching their own shirts in the not-too-distant future.'
What struck Beaham was just how revolutionary the Garden Weasel really was. Not only was it new and different, it literally revolved–there was absolutely nothing like on the US market. Beaham and Mr. Guetschow struck up an instant friendship, and Beaham ordered a container of Garden Weasels on the spot. The deal was solidified with a handshake.
Mr. Guetschow communicated the news of the sale to his boss, Mr. Hans vom Braucke, whose family company owned Garden Weasel, and the Beaham family befriended the vom Braucke family. The handshake relationship remains between the two family companies to this day.
Garden Weasel Goes To America
Back in the U.S., the arrival of a container load of German garden tools caused quite a commotion at the staid laundry starch company, whose expertise was selling ironing aids to grocery stores. Beaham, and Alfred Kohler, the Faultless International Director, struggled for several years to find the correct way to take the Garden Weasel to market. They tried mail order, and several other sales channels, with only minimal success.
The Garden Weasel then caught the eye of Joe Pedott, the owner of an advertising agency, who convinced Beaham that the way to market the Garden Weasel was through the use of television. Pedott would later be known as the marketer of the Chia Pet, The Clapper, the Chimney Sweeping Log, and other products seen on TV. After using TV in several local markets to promote Garden Weasel in drug stores, grocery stores, and other stores, it was apparent that the TV formula was the correct marketing method for the tool.
In 1976, Beaham hired Web Thompson, a sales person with close ties to the hardware industry, to help expand the sales and distribution of Garden Weasel. The rest, as they say, is history. Garden Weasel went on to sell millions of units in drug, food, hardware, mass-merchandise, home centers, and other outlets; eventually spawning a whole team of successful garden tool products, including: WeedPopper, Garden Claw and the Edger among others.

User questions & answers
Question: | I am cutting through the roots of some really thick grass roots on a large property to make a garden will this be powerful enough to get the job done |
Answer: | I live in Central Florida and it can handle At Augustine grass roots easy. If you have that or anything easier you will be fine. It is tougher than it looks! |
Question: | Just opened my new tiller and there is oil that leaked out of the gear box. Is that normal during shipping and do I need to add more |
Answer: | I received my tiller last night and when I unpacked, the lower part of the box was drenched with oil. I'm afraid to start it now... Will let it sit for a day before starting and see if it leaks more. If it does, I'm sending it back for replacement... |
Question: | will this break the sprinklers pvc pipe and sprinklers heads |
Answer: | Some of the plastic heads will break and I would imagine some of the metal heads could be damaged. This machine is powerful but very easy to handle. I really like mine and it is easy to handle in tight places. Plastic pipes will be severely damaged if you hit them. |
Question: | does it have variable speed or just on/off |
Answer: | One speed - and don't lug it down to slow the rotation or you'll most likely destroy the electric motor. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How wide is the strip cultivated with this tool in a single pass |
Answer: | Width cultivated is approximately 8 to 9 inches |
Question: | I want to essentially plow 1 x 8' space will this do it |
Answer: | I found this to be very helpful with turning over the mulch in my flower gardens. If your garden had been previously plowed it would be great to turn it over in the Spring, but I do not believe it would be able to turn over an unplowed space if it were grass-covered. It could if just dirt |
Question: | Why is a 2 pack $153 if one is |
Answer: | Idk. Good question. What’s the shipping cost difference and tax difference? Only thing I can think of? |
Question: | how do you stop it from collapsing ? as soon as I push on it when fully stretched, the handle just collapses and I cant find way to keep it stretched |
Answer: | I had the same problem with it collapsing. No amount of twisting to lock it into place ever worked.. garbage! |
