14 best composting tools
Composting tools are essential implements that aid in the process of composting, helping you manage your compost pile effectively. These tools are designed to turn, aerate, and maintain your compost, ensuring it decomposes efficiently and produces high-quality compost for your garden. Here are some common composting tools:
Compost Fork: A compost fork is a hand tool with multiple sharp tines used for turning and aerating the compost pile. It allows you to break up clumps, mix materials, and introduce oxygen to accelerate decomposition.
Compost Shovel: A compost shovel is a sturdy, flat-bladed shovel designed for moving compost materials. It's useful for transferring compost from one location to another, such as from a bin to a garden bed.
Compost Turner: Compost turners are specialized tools designed for easily and efficiently mixing and turning the compost pile. They often have a long handle and a set of rotating blades or paddles.
Compost Thermometer: A compost thermometer is a tool used to measure the temperature inside the compost pile. Monitoring the temperature can help you gauge the progress of decomposition. Ideally, compost should reach temperatures between 130°F to 160°F (54°C to 71°C) during the active composting phase.
Compost Sifter: A compost sifter or screen is used to separate finished compost from larger, uncomposted materials. It ensures that you get a fine, consistent product to use in your garden.
Compost Aerator: A compost aerator is a handheld tool with a spiral or corkscrew-shaped design. It's used to create holes or channels in the compost pile to improve aeration. This helps prevent compaction and ensures oxygen reaches all parts of the pile.
Kitchen Compost Pail: While not a traditional garden tool, a kitchen compost pail is a container designed for collecting food scraps and other compostable materials indoors. It has a lid to seal in odors and can be easily emptied into your outdoor compost bin or pile.
Gloves: Good-quality gardening gloves protect your hands from dirt, moisture, and potential pests when handling compost materials.
Wheelbarrow or Cart: A wheelbarrow or garden cart is helpful for transporting compost materials, especially when you're moving them from one area of your yard to another.
Pitchfork: A pitchfork can also be used for turning and aerating the compost pile, although it has fewer tines than a dedicated compost fork.
These composting tools make the composting process more manageable and efficient, allowing you to create nutrient-rich compost for your garden while minimizing effort and mess. Proper tools can also help maintain a well-balanced compost pile and promote decomposition, ultimately leading to better soil health and improved plant growth in your garden.

Product description
Shouldn't you enjoy everything in your garden? The Compost Crank is built to last. It's an easy, highly effective, and enjoyable way to tend your compost bin. It penetrates any material like an auger. Simply grasp the free-spinning handles, and crank clockwise into your pile. Lift without turning and the corkscrew pulls compost up from the bottom to thoroughly mix and aerate. Depending on how heavy your compost is, you may need to repeat this step layer by layer because it could be too heavy to lift. Once you've loosened the material you can go deeper. The tool is long enough to reach every corner of the bin, and light so you are lifting the compost and not the tool.

Question: | Has anyone used this in a pile that has a lot of compacted leaves? My pile is really big and has compacted down a lot making it hard to turn |
Answer: | The glue dries super quickly and you only need a very small amount so it doesn’t seep through the clothing other wise the glue shows a little bit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the size openings on the doors at the bottom |
Answer: | The FG20P Backyard Compost Thermometer is made in China. We do offer US made thermometers, search for Reotemp Heavy Duty Compost Thermometer. -Peter Reotemp |
Question: | So how do you turn the pile with a bin like this |
Answer: | Yes! The dial is hermetically sealed (waterproof). |
Question: | it obviously has an open bottom for easy access for the worms.... right |
Answer: | Yes. that is what I use them for and they work really well. I locate the bales that are the hottest and leave the REOTEMP in the bale and look at it daily. My last hay was not as dry as I would have liked and I put the REOTEMP in when it read 120F three days after baling. It went to 140F and then came back to 120 when I removed it yesterday. |
Question: | Can you anchor it to the ground? Can animals easily take the top off |
Answer: | The sensitive portion is the last 2 inches at the tip of the probe. So you don't have to necessarily put the entire stem into the compost pile. |

Introducing a new way to "crank" up your compost heap from Lotech Products, the inventors of the original corkscrew compost aerator, the Compost Crank.
The Compost Crank Twist is a fast, easy, highly effective, and enjoyable way to tend your compost bin. Modeled after our original Compost Crank, the corkscrew aerator design easily works its way into any sort of compost, whether it's just light leaves or dense sticks and vines. It can be comfortably used with one or two hands. Simply grasp the curled handle, and twist the tool clockwise down into your pile. Lift straight up without turning, and the corkscrew pulls compost up from the bottom to thoroughly mix and aerate. Twist in, and twist back out to create air holes. Twist in the center, lift out and shake compost to the side to dig a hole and bury fresh material. The Compost Crank Twist is a complete, high quality composting tool.
The aerator never clogs. Simply lay the spiral on top of your compost or on the edge of your bin, and "unscrew" the stuck on material. Built to last for as long as you compost, you can rest assured the Twist will be there ready to mix your pile whenever you are.
Lotech Products is committed to making it as easy and effective as possible for people to compost.

User questions & answers
Question: | can i use this crank on a pile of horse manure |
Answer: | The Compost Crank Compost Aerator has been outside in rain, sleet, snow, -30F degree temps and 100+F degree heat since 2015 and still works incredibly well. If you are referring to the $28 "umbrella" style handle versus the offset "crank handle" In my opinion, the design of this handle would work easier and faster to screw in to the compost than the less expensive "umbrella" type handle which would take more effort to screw down into the compost. In my opinion, it is a well made product and well worth the cost. |
Question: | Can it be left outside? Any problems with rust? Thanks |
Answer: | Roughly about 40-45 inches long, total length. The auger portion is around 6 inches long. I didn't actually measure as it was out near the compost pile ready to do its great jobchurning up and oxygenating the pile. |
Question: | has the handle coming off issue been resolved with the design |
Answer: | My compost pile is pretty compacted too. I just start by not turning the compost turner all the way down into the pile. Just start with a shallow layer near the top and once that is broken up, go through again turning deeper into the pile. I am not too strong either so this worked for me. |
Question: | Is it tedious to continually drill down with this model, which doesn't have the 2-handed crook mechanism of the more-expensive model |
Answer: | Absolutely. I am an active 70 year old woman and I can manage it. It turns into the compost like one of those old hand drills our dads and grandpas used to use. You can drill down deep or only 6 - 8 inches depending on the amount of strength you want to exert to pull it back up. If you go deeper than you can pull, just turn it out backwards. I am pretty sure you will like it. There are two models...get the more expensive one...it is worth the money. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is a shelf life of this product |
Answer: | I have bought it in bulk and kept over a year and it still seems to work. Keep it dry. |
Question: | Anyone have a homemade recipe for this mix |
Answer: | I have, I tried several times slightly tweaking the process in an attempt to be successful. It was challenging, stinky and I failed every time. I've no idea why! I'm thinking it would be far easier to use this as a starter and grow more by feeding this. That's my plan. I do the same with my EM. I purchased a bottle and then feed the microbes. It's expensive to keep purchasing! To answer your situation tho, Google bokashi recipe and follow the instructions precisely. Good luck! I hope you succeed! Failure is super smelly lol. |
Question: | Is this product safe for earthworms? Have any of you used it in a composting worm bin |
Answer: | Bokashi is a wonderful product. I use it in a kitchen waste composting bin. I have never used it in a composting worm bin. The Bokashi website has a lot of information regarding all sorts of composting techniques. Because worms love kitchen waste, I would imagine that Bokashi is safe for them. I don't think you will be disappointed. |
Question: | How many batches does a 2.2 lb bag compost |
Answer: | Thank you for your message. Using a healthy handful of bokashi for every layer of food scraps that you put into the bucket (up to 3"), a 1 gallon bag can be used to compost one to two buckets of food scraps. The amount of bokashi required varies from person to person and bucket to bucket due to the moisture content of your food scraps, ambient temperature and humidity, and food type. Remember if you are composting meat, bones or dairy extra bokashi may be necessary; better too much than too little to ensure complete fermentation and good smelling compost. It may take a little experimentation to find the perfect amount of bokashi to use with your kitchen composter. If your bucket starts to putrify (smell bad) or grow green mold (white mold is beneficial), then it’s time to toss that bucket out and use more bokashi in the next one. Good luck and thanks for posting this question! Best, SCD Probiotics |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will it kill the worms in my compost |
Answer: | It's 3 ft square at the bottom and has four lift doors which are about 12 inches. It seems to be a good size. I'm just beginning to compost, so I don't know if that will be sufficient when the compost is ready to harvest -- but it appears to be good. The only thing I wish it had was an attached top to make the disposal of scraps and yard waste in there a bit easier. |
Question: | Does this work in cold weather? Have recently purchased but debating whether to apply it to large leave piles this cold fall or wait until spring |
Answer: | I just lift the whole bin off the pile. It’s tapered and it pulls off easily. Then I use a pitchfork to put the contents back in the bin. It takes 5 to 10 minutes. |
Question: | Does this have any animal maure in it |
Answer: | Yes, it is open bottomed. Just place over the soil so worm can get in. We love these bins! |
Question: | Does it really break down your compost faster/better (I live in a cool climate)? How much do you use |
Answer: | I thought the tabs on the bottom were too short to securely anchor it, so instead of placing rocks on top, I use 6-inch long garden pins and they work perfectly. I was able to simply press them into the sodded ground hooking them over the bin's ledge under the four doors. I recommend anyone who buys this composter to buy a bag of garden pins at -- https://www.amazon.com/GardenMate-100-Pack-ANTI-RUST-Heavy-Duty-Galvanized/dp/B00PQL7JJ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478179098&sr=8-1&keywords=garden+pins+rust+proof --If this link isn't clickable, just copy and paste it into your browser's address line. |

Our mission is simple and straightforward: Enjoy your coffee once, but use the coffee grinds twice. Coffee pods contain a great organic resource that we now throw away after one use, taking up landfill space. The coffee grinds within, however, can help our gardens and plants thrive! Coffee grinds are great for: a natural plant fertilizer, when mixed with soil; composting; a natural insect repellent; an odor neutralizer; a natural cleaning scrub; a skin exfoliator; or a natural dye. The Coffee Pod Cutter is an innovative kitchen tool that easily removes lids from coffee pods in seconds, so you can quickly process them for composting or recycling. Designed to be used either handheld or with a wide-mouth canning jar already found in most kitchens, process your pods in 3 easy steps: 1. Insert pod into your Coffee Pod Cutter; 2. Apply light pressure and then fully turn either the Coffee Pod Cutter or the pod to pierce foil lid; and 3. Remove pod from Coffee Pod Cutter and peel back lid. The Coffee Pod Cutter is made in America from high-quality stainless steel components that will last, with no plastic materials that create more waste. Patent Pending. Veteran Owned. Made in USA. Compatible with K-cup single serve pods. Wide-mouth jar and lid not included. CAUTION: DO NOT PROCESS HOT COFFEE PODS. Let coffee pods cool completely before use. - Love the convenience of coffee pods but still want to reduce, reuse, and recycle? Then try the Coffee Pod Cutter today to remove coffee pod lids in seconds, so you can easily process pods for composting.
- Is multi-functional: use with a wide-mouth canning jar OR handheld in 3 easy steps: insert pod into your Coffee Pod Cutter; apply light pressure and then fully turn either the Coffee Pod Cutter or the pod to pierce foil lid; and remove pod from Coffee Pod Cutter and peel back lid.
- Is a safe alternative to manually breaking apart pods or using sharp tools or razors that dull over time to remove the foil top.
- Made in America and built to last, with high quality stainless steel components. Patent Pending
- Compatible with K-cup single serve pods. Please Note -This product does not remove the filter nor is it designed to cut the plastic pod for recycling. Please check locally if you wish to recycle the plastic cup.
User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work with Keurig K-cups |
Answer: | Sure you good unless the pile is very hard then it would be troublesome. I'm not impressed w/ the tool currently. I bought one to use with the GEO BIN composting bin thinking if I had the crank I would not need to unwrap the GEO BIN and turn it. It turns out if you have a very deep filling of GEO BIN it becomes very hard to pull material back out of the pile if you screw in the crank very far. So I don't use it and instead just unbutton the GEO BIN and move it and reassemble it next to the adjacent pile of compost then fork it back in thereby aerating etc. The crank is useful, just not as useful as I thought it would be. |
Question: | It looks like this items works with standard "canning-jar." What size jar is this made for |
Answer: | Mine has been outside for as long as I've had it (almost a year, I'm guessing), subject to rain and sun, and there's no sign of rust or any other kind of wear. |
Question: | Is the plastic part recyclable |
Answer: | I haven't had any problems with the design or construction. it works great. |
Question: | Does this cutter also cut the coffee filter inside the pod so the pod can be completely clean |
Answer: | I am not familiar with the 2-handed crook, but what I can say, is that this crank works very well, is lightweight and turns the compost quickly. I am thrilled to see that my scraps are finally turning into usable compost. |

Question: | Does this disl fog up |
Answer: | Not in my experience. I use it to maintain mash temperature of 150-160F and there is some condensation buildup on the outside but never fogs inside the thermometer. |
Question: | How long does it take to get a accurate reading with this thermometer |
Answer: | When I've used it the thermometer typically reads within 30 seconds or so - I don't use it in soil, I insert it into a large quantity of cacao beans that are fermenting in order to see how hot the ferment is - I have found it to be very accurate |
Question: | Will this work as a compost thermometer |
Answer: | I would think so ..... |
Question: | Can this be left outside permanently |
Answer: | Mine has been left outdoors for roughly 9 months. Glad this question came up . First hard freeze in the South coming in 2 days. Reminded me to go get before it freezes and cracks |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this capacity large enough? Because I want to use it to decorate the leaves of the garden, and my garden is big |
Answer: | being that it is organic and uses organic microbes, they should not kill the earthworms or red worms in your compost since they create similar microbes and live in the same dirt. I would test it out with only a small bit if you are concerned and see if they are still living after a week of using it. i usu it for only starting a fresh batch without microbes or worms. |
Question: | Can I take this garbage bag for fertilizer |
Answer: | It will work in cold. It is helpful to pour hot water on it to help activate it. Plus at start of winter you eant to make sure your pile is hot to keep working through winter. |
Question: | Is this good for food waste composting, too? And is there a smell |
Answer: | If you want something all natural, there are going to be animal parts in it. No way around it. |
Question: | What kind of material is this garbage bag? Is it environmentally friendly |
Answer: | I use a minimum of two cups in my home made 55 gal composter, and it speeds up the heat even in cooler temperatures. Make sure you use plenty of green matter to add nitrogen and if moisture levels are low, add some water. This compost starter also adds micro organisms that help your plants absorb the N-P-K and minerals after you use the compost, improving health and resistance to disease. I even add this as an organic fertilizer when setting out transplants. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the blade length |
Answer: | This device does not remove the filter. Most pods have a filter made of synthetic materials that cannot be composted. Also, if you are trying to recycle the plastic, we found in our early research that recycling facilities do not generally accept the plastic pods – they’re too small for their processing machines and end up being trashed. So, this device was created to safely cut the foil top so you can easily access the grinds, which we know are great for composting or a variety of other uses. |
