User questions & answers
Question: | Does the handle have a coating or varnish on it? Or is it just finished with linseed oil or barewood |
Answer: | Mine came with a high quality sanded finish. No coating. YMMV though, as I've seen conflicting reviews on some details like how sharp the axe was when shipped. The quality of the axe overall seems to be consistent: high quality steel, high quality hickory handle. Just minor variations in some of the details. Personally I wouldn't consider any of them deal breakers considering the price. |
Question: | where can I get a sheathe for this |
Answer: | Look for the "Helko" hatchet sheath with 12 inch strap (I think) the shorter one (I think they have a "hatchet" sheath with 12 and 16 inch strap..) do not get the premium sheath, mine came with oil for the leather and in 5 minutes my normal (not premium) sheath looked AWSOME and was just as good for a few bucks less. The helko hatchet sheath fit like a glove , has two buckle holes left, and looks very nice. |
Question: | are grains orientated correctly on the handles?are they bi-colored like the one shown? can you get one had picked or is it just luck of the draw |
Answer: | I think it is luck of the draw. The one I received had poor grain orientation so I am deciding whether to return it or keep it and replace the handle when/if it breaks. The Marbles Camp Axe is a SMKW brand but they were not yet able to find a replacement handle for me when I spoke to them. I called Condor (the maker in El Salvador) but the last known phone number was changed. The axe head appears to be of very good quality and it is well put together except for the wood grain. The handle is unusual as it is very thick near the head and then diminishes in circumference and is quite skinny which might be fine with gloves. Ed |
Question: | where was it made |
Answer: | These marble axes are made in El Salvador |

User questions & answers
Question: | What country is the blade made in? And what does the packaging look like |
Answer: | Comes packed in a nice, branded cardboard box. The steel is 1045 carbon. Forged in El Salvador by I believe the same outfit forging axes for Condor. I believe that’s the first level in the high carbon category. It sharpens fairly easily but holds a good edge if you care for it. Comes with a decent edge but I like to improve the taper profile to fit my needs. |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | In the item info |
Question: | Does the handle have any kind of varnish or wax? I want a raw handle to apply my own finish |
Answer: | SORRY I DON'T RECALL IF IT DID OR NOT. BUT IF IT DID AS I ALWAYS DO I USE A WOODWORKING SCRAPER AND SAND PAPER TO REMOVE EVERYTHING. THEN FINISH WITH BOILED LINDSEED OIL, HAND RUBBED. I WAS A FIRE ENGINEER FOE 25 YEARS, 13 ON ONE OF OUR ARIEL LADDER TRUCKS AND CARE AND FEEDING OF ALL THE HAND TOOLS. THAT IS HOW WE FINISHED ALL OUR SHOVEL, AXE AND HAMMER HANDLES. WE USE PIECES OF BROKEN GLASS TO SCRAP THEM. HOPE THIS IS OF SOME HELP AND THE SCRAPPING AND SANDING ONLY TAKE ABOUT 30 MIN. |
Question: | Where is the axe made |
Answer: | I believe it's made in El Salvador. It's a well made axe. The handle was about 45 degrees off center, but not a big deal. I thinned up the edge and it cuts pretty well and keeps a decent edge. Well worth the money! |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this made in the USA |
Answer: | There are no replacement heads sold for this item. I change the direction just by carefully adjusting the head. |
Question: | how does the shovel head get locked into various positions |
Answer: | You could cut the hoses and add new ends, but i don't think there is any option for this product. I'd just stick with the standard hoses. They're really just fine. |
Question: | Is any part of shovel made of plastic |
Answer: | Yes you can, you can also add hoses to this setup. |
Question: | Can it be attached to molle webbing? Thanks |
Answer: | I connected the lead hose to a regular size hose on my faucet. I have been unable to get the full spray effect out of either sprinkler. It's more like a max 2 foot spray. or a bubbler type.It may be because my regular hose is too long or this set-up needs to be closer to a faucet or we do not have enough water pressure to produce full spray. I've been using it as a bubbler for my shrubs and I guess that's all it'll do. For the time being this will work for me. Perhaps if you have great water pressure you can have a larger coverage area. |

Answer: | Overall length is 27”, don’t have a weight |
Question: | Can this be used to fell a medium sized tree? what about large |
Answer: | Good for a small or medium size tree, but I don’t think it would be good for a large tree, but I’ve never tried either. The steal head did loosen while I was using it so I had to tighten it a few times and it didn’t even come with an Alan wrench to do so. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the head of the axe painted |
Answer: | The distance all depends on the visibility. In poor visibility, the light may only shine 10ft or less. In good visibility, the light will shine almost as far as visibility will allow. |
Question: | Is this axe 100% made in USA |
Answer: | Hello,Thank you for contacting us. Yes, we can ship without batteries if you prefer. After placing your order, simply email us and ask us to ship without the batteries. Thank you,House of Scuba |
Question: | Amazon stock shows there are four (4) of these axes left. Can you verify or the seller verify they are the new all American made ones please |
Answer: | Not sure I understand your question.. if by modes you mean number of light intensity levels, then it has two. On and off. |
Question: | Is this axe head being made in the USA now as some have posted or is it still made in China |
Answer: | We bought this light almost a year ago after a dive light failed. Used it last night for the first time since purchase and it failed about 30 minutes into dive. Depth was no deeper than 50 feet. Postmortem the light was completely flooded with water. Lens was on tight and o-ring intact. Very disappointed in this expensive but poorly made product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Just curious, but are you free swinging it or use another hammer and whacking the back of it |
Answer: | Technically, this is a maul not a splitting wedge so it’s meant to be used by “free swinging”. In reality, Estwing tools have legendary durability and you could pound away on it like a splitting wedge. That said, a splitting wedge is typically hammered with a sledge hammer. I’ve used sledges and I’ve used the back of a maul to hammer wedges. A splitting maul is essentially a sledge hammer with one end sharpened into an axe blade. Still, I’d probably use another log or a mallet to hammer this tool. I wouldn’t bash on it with a sledge hammer. Remember eye protection! |
Question: | What is the black finish? paint? powdercoat? black oxide |
Answer: | I don't believe it's paint; would only be guessing about powdercoat or black oxide; it seems durable and it's a nice tool I can tell you that. The extra weight splits wood with ease and it looks nice. |
Question: | If this is for splitting, can anyone recommend a similar quality axe for chopping wood & for felling a tree |
Answer: | Boy, this is really a tricky question. I have and use many axes, all for different tasks.... But my go to for everything is a 2 1/4 lb axe head with a ~3 foot handle. It is a smallish head (Abit more than a hatchet head) on a standard haft. If I was chopping down lots of trees, I would take a larger felling axe. If I were splitting logs, I wouldswing something far heavier. But if I am going on a hike, a paddle, or any adventure, I would grab this pack axe. It is little more than a hatchet head on an axe halft, but it can do almost anything. I have fell trees with it, and I have split kindeling with it. If I could only take one axe, it would be this one. I think I got it at an ace hardware....or some other crap store, and I think this is the 3rd haft I have put on it (2 of them I made myself, and even the stock haft was OK'ish, but I wanted to make my own). I will say, I would not get an Eswing axe for general use. That steel haft will not be good for general work. It is heavy, transmits shock and vibration to your hands, and does not let you choke up on the axe for fine work. Really, take an honest look at how much of what kind of work you are going to do.... or.... Do what I have done. Embrace the beauty of the axe, start a collection, and find ways to use them all :-) |
Question: | Tried to use the axe. Blue paint from the handle painted my palm amost instantly . Any idea how to make the pant to stay on the handle |
Answer: | Aside from the snide answers (from right wing trolls) to your question, the best way to protect the blue paint is to spray the painted areas with polyurethane. The paint Estwing uses is not a durable paint at all and is only for cosmetic purposes. |

Fireside Friend Splitting Tool
Estwing's Fireside Friend Splitting Tool is forged in one piece. The length and weight give leverage and power for easy wood splitting. If you need firewood for staying warm during the winter season ahead, you're going to need a good wood splitting tool. Splitting tools are designed to create smaller chunks by splitting wood fibers apart.
Easy To Use
The original maul resembles an axe but with a broader head, for splitting wood. It also causes nearly no part of the wood to go to waste. More wood means less splitting and enjoying that wood in your fireplace for a longer time.
Built For Power
The best splitting maul will have a large, heavy wedge-shaped head. Swinging the large heavy head will produce a great force focused into the blunt V-shaped head. The dull blade is still thin enough to find its way in between the wood fibers and with the thick head of the maul.
Comes With Comfort
The handle length and weight give leverage and power for easy wood splitting. The grip is a beautiful genuine leather. Maul handles are normally straight and closer to round with a elongated oval axe handle, built for maximum control and comfort.
Durability
Estwing sheaths are built with durable ballistic nylon construction with reinforced stitching, offers safety and protection for your Estwing tool. Its button fastening and belt compatible design makes for easy carry around item.

Mankind been using the axe to shape, split, and cut wood for millennia. The Kershaw Deschutes camp ax is an update on that trusty tool. With its angular handle lines and cutouts in the ax head and knob, it has a decidedly contemporary look - but form meets function in this survival tool. The full tang - an extension of the blade steel through the handle - capitalizes on the strength of the 3Cr13 stainless steel to make this one efficient splitter. No thrown ax heads here. The blade's extended bearded design helps the user accomplish carving tasks, such as cutting kindling, without sacrificing the heft and swing needed to split logs. And although it's a solid piece of equipment, it's lightweight, featuring angular cutouts that double as carrying aids. The Kershaw Deschutes was made to be essential equipment for the modern camper - and we're confident that it will fulfill that important role.
- Made of tough 3Cr13 stainless steel, the wedge blade of the Kershaw Deschutes hatchet axe is full tang for extraordinary strength and durability.
- A tan, glass-filled nylon handle with rubberized inserts provides a comfortable, secure grip for camping and backpacking.
- A molded sheath and nylon straps attach for secure storage and easy carry. Cutouts in the ax head and knob relieve weight, provide space for wrist-strap and sheath attachment, and make for a versatile design.
- Chopping, splitting, or light forestry - from boy scout to professional hunter - the Deschutes is the ultimate bushcraft tool.
- The Deschutes measures 14 inches long with a 3.5-inch blade; it weighs just 1 lb. 9 ounches unsheathed, and 1 lb. 12 ounces sheathed.
- Included Components: Camping Axe

Question: | Why are even the high-end hatchet and knives now made out of stainless? That is not a good alloy for maintaining an edge |

Answer: | The bits are symmetrical. This tool is not adequate for log splitting or felling. It's slightly larger than an average size hatchet. |
Question: | Does the axe ship having already been sharpened or will I need to sharpen it when it arrives |
Answer: | It does indeed come with a poly-fabric-weave type sheath. There are 4 snap closures as well to ensure a secure fit. |
Question: | Is the head wide enough for splitting or narrow for chopping |
Answer: | It can be thrown, but I don't recommend it. The riveted steel pommel came loose the first time the butt hit the target instead of the blade. The head really needs a bit more weight to be thrown well. When my friends and I tried we noticed it took considerably more force to make it stick than any traditional hatchet or axe due to it being heavier on the handle end (we are all fairly proficient at throwing). All in all though, if you can heave it hard enough to make up for the lack of weight in the head, it will land. |
Question: | Is there a particular reason this is made from carbon steel instead of stainless? Won't this axe rust once the powder coat wears off |
Answer: | hobbits should stick with tiny elven blades. axes are more for dwarfs, as noted by chad. the more important question is what is more deadly to orcs, the black one, the blue one, or the black with the leather handle? |
