13 best garden composters
Garden composters, also known as composting bins or composting yard waste bins, are essential tools for recycling organic materials and creating nutrient-rich compost for your garden. These bins are designed to facilitate the decomposition of organic matter through natural processes, turning kitchen scraps and yard waste into valuable compost that can enrich your soil and promote healthy plant growth. Here are some key points about garden composters:
Types of Composters:
- Tumbler Composters: These have a drum or barrel that can be rotated, making it easy to turn and aerate the compost.
- Stationary Compost Bins: These are fixed in place and typically have open bottoms to allow for better contact with the ground.
- Vermicompost Bins: These are designed for indoor use and utilize worms (vermiculture) to break down organic matter into compost.
Materials for Composting:
- Composters accept a wide range of organic materials, including kitchen scraps (fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, eggshells), yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, small branches), and even paper products (newspaper, cardboard) in limited quantities.
Composting Process:
- Composting is a natural process that involves the decomposition of organic matter by microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and insects.
- Proper aeration and moisture levels are essential for efficient decomposition.
- Turning the compost regularly helps mix materials and provide oxygen to microbes, speeding up the process.
Benefits of Using Garden Composters:
- Produces nutrient-rich compost that improves soil structure and fertility.
- Reduces the amount of organic waste sent to landfills, helping the environment.
- Saves money on commercial fertilizers and soil amendments.
- Enhances water retention and drainage in soil, reducing the need for irrigation.
Maintenance:
- Regularly check the moisture levels to ensure the compost pile remains damp but not waterlogged.
- Avoid adding diseased or pest-infested plant material to the composter.
- Monitor the temperature within the compost to ensure it stays within the ideal range for decomposition (around 140°F or 60°C).
Harvesting Compost:
- Compost is typically ready for use in 3 to 12 months, depending on factors like temperature, aeration, and the types of materials used.
- Finished compost should be dark, crumbly, and have a earthy smell.
- You can then use the compost to enrich your garden soil or as a top dressing for your plants.
In summary, garden composters are valuable tools for recycling organic waste and creating nutrient-rich compost that can benefit your garden. By following best practices for composting, you can reduce waste, improve soil quality, and support a more sustainable and productive garden.

User questions & answers
Question: | How much do these things smell? Want to put composter inside a small area behind our shed if the smell won't nauseate the kiddos |
Answer: | We have one in our backyard and I almost never smell it. The only time I have noticed a smell has been when the lid is open and I am dumping more kitchen scraps in it and even then it's not that often. All the compost books say if it does smell bad that means you need more greens or browns depending on the smell. |
Question: | What is the capacity |
Answer: | According to the calculator, 12 cubic feet equals almost 90 gallons--if you're mixing your nitrogen to carbon ratios using 5 gallon buckets. This looks like an excellent explanation for how to fill your composter: https://savvygardening.com/compost-how-to-guide-based-on-science/ |
Question: | Since it doesn't have a bottom, will that work on our patio? We live in a condo and only have a large patio area that is concrete |
Answer: | I wouldn't use this in your situation. It would definitely stain the patio. I'd find a different design. Also you'll need to make sure you have enough dry material in the composter or it will stink if your compost is mostly kitchen scraps. In your situation I'd probably go for worm composting. My daughter made a vermicompost kit out of a couple of inexpensive storage bins at a camp a number of years ago. One has holes drilled into it and the other is solid so any worms or leakage will go into the outer bin. Here is an article on the subject: http://compost.css.cornell.edu/worms/basics.html You need to get red worms or red wigglers from a bait store, not common earth worms from the soil for best results. |
Question: | How do the top doors open? Easy enough to do one handed? Do they keep out the raccoons |
Answer: | I have not had any problems with raccoons or rodents at all. The top locks tightly. And yes, I can open it one handed to throw in a small amount of scraps but otherwise, two hands work better to take the entire top off when adding large amounts, leaves or twigs and grass clippings. Remember to turn it at least once a week - I use a pitchfork to do that task. Good luck! |

Composting: Help Yourself and the Environment at the Same Time
The composting trend is growing and the most recent research shows that In 2012 the U.S recycled and composted almost 87 million tons of municipal solid waste. This saves more than 1.1 quadrillion Btu of energy; that's the same amount of energy used by 10 million households in one year.
Over 19 million tons of yard trimmings were composted in 2012, which is 5 times more than in 1990.
Food waste is the single largest type of item thrown away making up 21 percent of everything we throw out. We might as well use this food waste to fertilize our gardens rather than paying to have it sent to a landfill! The Soil Savers extra large capacity make it perfect for accommodating a good deal of food scraps.
Access Your Compost Easily
Dual hatch doors allow you convenient access to your compost whenever needed.
The Advantage of SoilSaver Bin Composting
The items you put in first will be at the bottom and should be the first out. This is a big benefit because you can use a little compost at a time if you need to. This is an advantage compared to most tumbling composters. With many tumbling composters, all the old scraps are mixed with the new waste which means all of the compost in the bin needs to be ready before you can use any of it.
More Advantages of the Best Compost Bin
The slots and louvers throughout the compost bin let air in and out for aeration which helps food waste break down quickly into rich compost.
The 0.200" thick resin walls provide excellent strength and durability.
The extra large 12 cubic foot capacity means you will have plenty of space for your compost waste
Lid is easy to open and lock making it convenient to add to your composter while keeping animals out
A Sense of Humus goes Well with Compost
A simple to follow yet comprehensive guide helps you put the right food waste and yard trimmings into your composter.

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the best mixture of scraps to put in the composter to start the first batch in a brand new yimby tumbler composter |
Answer: | Yes it does. It does not come with a mat. |
Question: | Any tips for winter usage, once temperatures cause the compost to freeze |
Answer: | Yes, if you print a cake on a shirt and make decorations for it then you could use it for cake decorating purposes |
Question: | do you have to put it together and is it difficult we are not good at assembly |
Answer: | I use a teflon sheet and no you don't have to press too hard. I used to use my iron and this thing is AAAAAmazing!!! Time and heat control... no more guessing or over heating. |
Question: | Is it bear proof |
Answer: | Your iron may be greatly superior to mine...But the advantages that this heat press has over my iron are these: 1) I'm able set the exact temperature I need. (I didn't realize what a difference this would make!) 2) The heat press is HEAVY. I want a lightweight iron for ironing clothes, but want pressure (which weight provides) for heat transfer designs. 3) This heat press has a timer. I've been amazed how much better my work turns out when I'm a little more careful about the timing. These are the three major advantages I've found in using a heat press over my iron. To be truthful, any heat press probably delivers these. But the smaller, more compact size (even with the largest, the 12 x 10--which I purchased), and hence, easier storage when not in use...is what tipped the scales for me when choosing the Cricut over the other brands of heat presses. Hope this helps your decision-making! |

Question: | How do you turn the pile? How do you mix |
Answer: | The coffee brews while the milk is being stirred & frothed. As it brews, it flows into the carafe with the milk that is being stirred & frothed. Once the process is complete, the 'coffee flavored' froth separates to the top and the coffee to the bottom of the carafe. As the coffee is poured, you get a mixture of coffee & froth but the froth will settle to the top. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How sturdy is this item? Will it fall over in a strong wind? I live where the winds blow fairly hard at times |
Answer: | I actually toss a little bit (maybe 6 cups) of soil from my garden in my compost when starting it out and it seems to give it a good kick. Just add 50/50 green and brown material with it and it will take off. Make sure to check it often if it gets sunny outside. Compost seems to dry out fast when it's hot, due to bacteria and fungus using a lot more water when it gets hot. |
Question: | where is it made |
Answer: | I keep adding to my compost all winter. I just don't turn it over as often, maybe once every 2 weeks or so. While nothing will "cook" during the winter, you'll have fresh material on standby for when it does start to warm up. I suppose my only tip would be to make sure you add material to it during the daytime and make sure your composter stays in a sunny spot. The door can freeze "shut" at night due to the lower temperatures and any moisture along the track.I've already been through one winter with it and I sincerely had no issues and didn't have to make any changes to the way I used the tumbler. |
Question: | at what point do I stop putting waste in and stop so it fully composts? There seems to be a lack of info about the transition |
Answer: | You have to assemble it. I brought it about a year ago and put off trying to put it together until yesterday, because of all the reviews saying it was difficult. I didn't find it hard to figure out how to do it , and thought the instructions that came with it did a good job of showing you how to do it . It was time consuming because you have to put in 57 small screws with the nuts. I'm a woman, 76 years old with no especial insight on assembling things. It looks like it will do a good job for me. |
Question: | can we get compost tea |
Answer: | NO, NOT AT ALL. Compared to actual bear-proof stuff, this lightweight plastic thing is like playdough. It's not pretending to be otherwise. Bears require heavy metal and tricky locking mechanisms--and, even so, they still break open car doors and trunks. If you have bear issues, maybe keep this in an area enclosed by a tall, strong fence, or in a garage/shed/barn, if you have one big enough for that to work and not overwhelm you with stink. |
- TWIN CHAMBER-Designed with 2 chamber benefits Batch composting, which is the most efficient way to produce high-quality compost; Let one side "cook" while you add fresh materials to the other, continuously swapping sides creates an uninterrupted flow of rich, healthy compost
- CREATIVE TUMBLING DESIGN-The rotating design lets your hands-free, avoiding digging and mixing your compost pile by hands, making the mixing more easy and efficient; Just fill it up with garden refuse and kitchen scraps, slide the door closed and give it a turn every couple days
- OUTSTANDING AERATION-Adjustable air vents and deep fins strengthen the air circulation, help decompose the clumps in the chamber and combine lots of oxygen into the compost, easily produce finished compost in weeks
- STURDY & DURABLE CONSTRUCTION-Made of galvanized steel and high-quality PP plastic, this VIVOSUN Tumbling Composter is corrosion-resistant, degrade resistant, sturdy and durable for long-lasting service life
- GARDEN GLOVES INCLUDED-Comes with 4 durable ABS plastic claws, no other tools required, convenient to excavate and plant in horticultural work; Latex rubber material not only protects your hands from cuts and broken nails but also makes it easy to clean as its waterproof function
User questions & answers
Question: | Is this composter black bear resistant. If not - do you know of one that is |
Answer: | Don’t really know because it was bought for my wife who has two other compost containers. She has transferred some material to the new one. She does love her new composter. States that it is exactly what she wasted. |
Question: | Can I leave this outside in the winter or will it wear out faster? I could put it in my garage but worried it would smell |
Answer: | I have no idea. The description doesn't mention that it is BPA free. I would think this is a question for the seller/manufacturer. |
Question: | Can it be assembled as a single chamber |
Answer: | 43 gallons is about 0.2 cubic yards. |
Question: | Is the plastic of the compost bin BPA free |
Answer: | Yes, you can use it as a single chamber tumbler. but if so, the design of 2 doors would be redundant. |

The tumbling design makes mixing easy and efficient. Just close the door and turn it 5-6 times every 2-3 days. In hot sunny conditions and with a proper balance of ingredients the compost can finish in as little as 2 weeks. Two separate sides allow the first side to finish while leaving the second side available to add fresh scraps/clippings. Continuously swapping sides after finishing will create an uninterrupted flow of rich, healthy compost. Both composter bodies spin independently from each other making tumbling this composter twice as easy as composters of similar size. Constructed from BPA free, UV inhibited, recycled polyethylene the plastic is contact safe and will not degrade under direct sunlight. The painted galvanized steel frame is corrosion resistant and will look great for years. The total volume of both chambers is approximately 37 gallons (5 cu ft. ).

User questions & answers
Question: | We are city dwellers and there are rat issues in the neighborhood. Would the composted provide them with another attraction |
Answer: | dont buy this build a home made one instead |
Question: | Is the frame sturdy enough to support two full bins |
Answer: | Very little because of you fill it too full then the plastic breaks. It is a horrible composted. Don't waste your money! |
Question: | How is this put together? Are the tumblers one piece or do you join two or more pieces to put together each tumbler? How many screws? Thanks |
Answer: | The instructions to assemble should be with the tumbler, together with a list of all the parts. |
Question: | Can you tell me the assembled dimensions |
Answer: | Tracy, push the open/close slide in to the open position, then turn the lid counter clockwise. It seems like it is stuck but muscle it, and it will open. After that file down the small round little nibs in each of the four 'L' shaped air vents and that will make the lid easier to turn. Do the same thing on the other side of the barrel. It is not hard to file the plastic and it is worth the effort because my tumbler is working well and it really does cook compost efficiently. |
