10 best compost tea makers

Compost tea makers are devices used in gardening and composting to create a nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer known as compost tea. Compost tea is made by steeping compost or compostable materials in water to extract the beneficial microorganisms, nutrients, and beneficial compounds. Here's what you need to know about compost tea makers:

  1. Purpose: Compost tea makers are designed to harness the benefits of compost in a liquid form.Compost tea is a natural and organic liquid fertilizer that can enhance soil health, promote plant growth, and improve the overall vitality of your garden.

  2. Components: A typical compost tea maker consists of a container or brewing vessel, an aeration system, and a method for straining out solid particles. Some models also have a pump for circulation and a timer for automated brewing.

  3. Brewing Process: To make compost tea, you start by placing compost or compostable materials in the brewing vessel. Water is added to create a mixture, and the aeration system continuously agitates the mixture. This aeration promotes the growth of beneficial microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, which break down organic matter and release nutrients into the water.

  4. Aeration: Aeration is a critical component of compost tea making. It ensures that the water remains oxygenated, creating a favorable environment for beneficial microorganisms. Aeration can be achieved using air stones, bubblers, or a pump and diffuser system.

  5. Brewing Time: The brewing time for compost tea can vary depending on the specific recipe and desired strength. It can range from a few hours to several days. Some compost tea makers have timers to automate the brewing process.

  6. Straining: After the brewing period, the liquid is strained to remove any remaining solid particles and compost material. This results in a liquid fertilizer that is ready to be applied to plants or soil.

  7. Application: Compost tea can be applied to plants and soil using a watering can, hose-end sprayer, or specialized spray equipment. It can be used as a soil drench or foliar spray, delivering nutrients and beneficial microorganisms directly to plants.

  8. Benefits: Compost tea enriches the soil with essential nutrients, helps improve soil structure, increases microbial activity, and can enhance plant resistance to diseases and pests. It is particularly beneficial for organic and sustainable gardening practices.

  9. Customization: Compost tea recipes can be customized based on the specific needs of your garden. You can adjust the ingredients and brewing time to create a tea tailored to your plants and soil conditions.

  10. Storage: Compost tea is best used shortly after brewing to maximize its effectiveness. However, it can be stored for a short period if necessary. Keep it in a well-ventilated container, away from direct sunlight.

In summary, compost tea makers are valuable tools for gardeners and compost enthusiasts who want to harness the benefits of compost in a liquid form. These devices facilitate the creation of nutrient-rich compost tea, which can improve soil health, enhance plant growth, and contribute to the overall success of your garden.

User questions & answers

Question: This system comes with your "mircobial inoculant." is that like bioag's vam fungi
Answer: Our Microbial Inoculant #1 is different from BioAg's Vam in that our MI#1 contains several bacteria, fungi, and a Trichoderma species. VAM has seven species of Fungi, our MI#1 has 8. The bacteria in the TeaLAB mix are diverse and promote the uptake Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium, plus the micronutrients. The Bacillus mycoides in our blend is unique to the industry and promotes the uptake of Silica, which is shown to make plant tissues stronger and more disease resistant. B. myocides also has been shown to stimulate the Systemic Acquired Response, which is a plants natural immune defense system. I am sure that BioAg's VAM is a good product, though our MI#1 has a bit more diversity, leading to a more robust and healthy soil environment. Also, studies have shown that having Trichoderma along with Glomus (fungal species) is the most beneficial in the way of plant growth. I hope this helped. Feel free to ask follow up questions. TeaLAB
Question: What size is the tubing
Answer: 3/8 inch id looks like 1/2 od
Question: Does this come ready to use with all I need to get started or do I need to purchase the bucket and hoses
Answer: Hello, the kit does have the hose and hose-clamp, though you will need your own vucket. We wanted this kit to be simple and light, saving people shipping costs. We know that some people want a bucket, so we have another full kit that does come with a bucket, along with some compost and other microbial products to get brewing with. Look for our 5 Gallon Complete Kit. OK, I hope this helps. Let us know if you have brew questions as well.TeaLAB
Question: So you don't need air stones with this kit
Answer: I bought the kit with the 951GPH Elemental Air Pump. I had to tie a weight to the bubble snake to keep it on the bottom.

User questions & answers

Question: When bubbling my Compost Tea, should it foam up or not
Answer: Hello Michelle! Foam usually occurs, but if it doesn't don't worry. Foam does not indicate microbial activity. I have bubbled fish powder alone and have gotten huge heads of foam. Depending on your ingredients, water temperature & pH, and seeming randomness, you may or may not get a good head of foam. Foam is created by the organic matter degrading into soap like materials that lessen surface tension. This happens with water, which is good organic solvent, and it happens via microbes. If there is no foam, there is something occurring that is keeping the soap-like compounds from forming. This does not indicate that there is a problem, rather that the path that the brew took, based on ingredients and conditions, did not set up the water to be able to create foam. Take home message: No foam no problem. I hope this helped. Let me know if you need any clarification. LAB
Question: I used my kit for the first time and I got what looks like wear marks on the bubble snake and the bucket . is that normal
Answer: There will be normal wear marks or scratches that might occur during use. Feel free to contact us if you think there might be a problem. Thanks!
Question: Does this allow you to use your homemade worm castings as the compost (worm tea), or do you have to use the special cube provided for success
Answer: Yes, it does. You just have to put the castings in the mesh bag. The cube has a really good blend of everything you really need only if you don't make your own tea blend which provides the essential nutrients, fertilizers minerals, etc. Up to you and your set-up, really.
Question: I just purchased this from you, but it lacks any directions. How can I get directions on use from you. Thank you
Answer: Hi Shelley! Sorry for the lack of instructions, TeaLAB is experiencing an exciting flush of growth and that is but one detail left undone. I will make an instructional video to make this even easier, until then below are some decent instructions. Please ask any questions, we are here to help. Instructions:1. Connect BubbleSnake neck to bubble-tail. 2. Dump contents of one LiFeCuBe (compost mixture) into the Brew Bag.3. Clip Brew Bag to BubbleSnake compost cobra ring.4. Set BubbleSnake and Brew Bag aside and fill bucket (2" to brim) with de-chlorinated water (bubble 2 hours or let sit 24). 5. Set BubbleSnake and Brew Bag into bucket of water.6. Plug in air pump (should have arrived attached to BubbleSnake with tubing). 7. If the BubbleSnake attempts to escape the bucket by bubbling out, just rotate the neck position to ensure a tame BubbleSnake. Dry compost will soak up water and hold the snake directly down after about 30 minutes. 8. Open cellophane package and toss FishBall into water. The baggy dissolves in about 1 minute.9. Bubble water for 16-36 hours (cooler water = longer brew time).10. Remove BubbleSnake & Brew Bag from bucket and apply tea to garden. You can use full strength, or dilute one gallon into up to 20 gallons of water. 11. Clean the Brew Bag and bubble by spraying off with a garden hose. Dump the spent compost in your garden beds or compost pile. The durable Brew Bag makes a good scrubber for the bucket. Soak the BubbleSnake & Bag in a 10% bleach solution every month or so. I hope that helps! PS. keep your air pump higher than the bucket, just in case the power fails, tea will not siphon back through the pump.

The Hungry Bin does not have a tap that can block or need replacing. The liquid drains through a filter straight into a tray.
  • ✔️ECO-FRIENDLY: You will be saving food scraps from going into the land fill. Also, the Hungry Bin is manufactured from food grade polypropylene with organic colourants and comes in a food grade stability package. • ✔️LIFETIME GUARANTEE: Hungry Bin has been designed to last, its durable components and exceptional design means we standby our product and will guarantee it and its parts for life. All parts of the Hungry Bin are fully recyclable.

User questions & answers

Question: How much compost do you get and how often
Answer: Each tray is 17"x17"x5". The volume is the same as the ones in the market such as the worm factory and the original VermiHut. When all 5 trays are stacked, it is about 33" including the base. We make the VermiHut Plus tray wider and little bit shorter so that it has less pressure and more area for air-flow. The VermiHut Plus design is an improvement compared to the original VermiHut and the Worm Factory.
Question: If I transfer my old compost - with earthworms - into this and add red Wigglers, will they coexist? Or will it be wormy genocide
Answer: Hi Agustin, Sorry, I do not have the 1979 F-150 in all red. Cyberzingo LLC
Question: How does the Hungry Bin keep everything from falling out of the bottom when you take off the tray
Answer: Yes
Question: Does anyone know how this hungry bin compares to the worm inn made from breathable fabric
Answer: No, front wheels do not rotate. It is actually difficult to even reach the steering wheel through the open driver’s door. This truck is really just suitable for display only and not meant as a young child’s toy.

Answer: Dear Andy D.,On behalf of Envirocycle, I deeply apologize for not getting back to you sooner. This model is currently discontinued however we have recently released two new models that are now available at Amazon.com: The Most Beautiful Composter in the World,Envirocycle Composter Composteamaker,35 Gallon Compost TumblerHere is the link to Amazon.com to see the composter: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0121G9ZJW ORThe Cutest Composter in the World,Envirocycle Mini Composter Composteamaker,17 Gallon Compost TumblerHere is the link to Amazon.com to see the composter: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0121B5474 You can definitely add worms into Envirocycle composters (both the discontinued and new models), but they are not necessary. If you add worms, you should not turn the composter. The worms may be injured or killed by the turning action. Keep the composter in a shaded area. The worms will aerate the compost pile themselves by digging holes in it. They eat about their body weight worth of food every day, and quickly multiply, so it is important to add enough food to the pile.Is there anything we can help you with? Compost Tea Aerator -Barrel Sized Aerator - The BubbleSnake

TeaLAB

Based on 43 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The BubbleSnake evolved from the need to be able to clean things easier, while still doing a great job making tea. Over several years of heavy R&D, TeaLAB came up with a design that solves a number of problems, while also looking pretty cool. The BubbleSnake is a simple, easy, durable tool used to brew high quality compost tea. Here's one of our favorite reviews: We recommend using a 1268GPH (or greater) air pump with the barrel sized BubbleSnake.

Customer Reviews:

"Best Value on the Market for Large Scale Compost Tea! I LOVE the Bubble Snake and am so glad I found it before I had purchased or built something else! The concept is so simple it's brilliant! So easy to setup, use and clean too! I bought the large size because it is not that much more that the small size but it makes up to 10x more! Mine also came with a very nice laminated tea recipe and reference sheet that was a great extra. I have used mine three times and it has worked perfectly. I found a video on You-tube from TeaLAB that reviews the use and it covers some small tips that make the system even easier! I purchased the aerator, pump and bag and had not realized that the bag clips onto the aerator ring to hold into down in the water. So many quality details built into the product that I feel it will last for years. I use mine with my 45 gal Rain Barrel and it makes a GREAT system that is easy to brew and dispense the tea. I am hoping to figure out a way to pump the tea through a hose and then it will be perfect! Right now I can use the hose with my barrel but it is very slow. I usually just use the spigot to fill watering cans and apply it that way. Best design on the market for sure!" from Brenda C. on 8/26/15

User questions & answers

Question: I've been using a small Roughneck garbage can to make 7-8 gallon batches. It's about 15" diameter by 23" tall. Which size aerator do you recommend
Answer: I have both the large and small Bubble Snake. Love them both! Great products! The small is intended for 5 gallon pails and sized that way. The larger is for 30 gallon trash cans. For batches of 7-8 gallons in the container size you are using I would use the larger size Bubble Snake. This will also give you added flexibility. Be sure to size with larger air source.
Question: Shouldn't the holes be in the top to force the unit into the container rather than on the bottom forcing it out of the container
Answer: This tea brewer is perfect and the holes are in the correct position, I sell hundreds of these units and growers really enjoy them as they make a high quality tea! I use one myself on my farm. One grower wanted to return the unit, because he says it did not work, when I would not pay for the return on the shipping that forced the bad review. and thats the bottom line. Just check out all the other online reviews for this product. Ron
Question: Would a 950 GPH air pump work
Answer: Yes, I use an Eco air 1 that only outputs 793 GPH and it works great!
Question: Does this come with a pump? What else is needed besides the 30 to 50 gallon barrel? If not, which pump would I purchase
Answer: The BubbleSnake does not come with an air pump. Besides an air pump, you will also need a mesh tea bag to hold the compost material. We recommend the 1268 gallon per hour pump (or something similar). They are about $60 online, or try and find one at your local garden shop, you will likely save on shipping. The pumps are commercial grade and last a very long time. A good air pump is the most important investment in your tea brewing set up. You can see a video of how the system works here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdCE0jB3N8YAnd here is the amazon link to the proper air pump: http://www.amazon.com/Commercial-Pump-5-37psi-Aquarium-Hydroponics/dp/B00BVLT8G4/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1405091075&sr=8-12&keywords=tealabI hope this helped. Happy Brewing!
Question: would this work well for a 30 gallon AACT
Answer: Couldn't see it being used for 30 gallons. Works great when I do 5gl at time.
Question: does this make small or large bubbles? Don't you need small bubbles to dissolve oxygen in the water
Answer: Hello, the BubbleSnake makes larger bubbles, which absolutely oxygenate the water. Any time the surface tension of water is broken, oxygen is able to dissolve into the water. So, big bubbles do this plenty good. They also makes for mixing currents in the vessel, keeping any sedimentation to a minimum. Hope this helps! LAB
Question: Are the bubblesnake, bag, & tubing made from bpa free and food safe
Answer: Yes it is
Question: What size diameter tubing do I need for the 5 gallon snake? It is larger then standard aquarium airline and I've read it's 3/8" and
Answer: The 5 Gallon BubbleSnake comes with a fitting for 1/4" Inside Diameter tubing. Standard aquarium tubing is too small for the air pump we recommend. If you would like a fitting for 3/8" tubing, just let us know in the comment section on your order. We are more than happy to make it work for you.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this fit my 23 oz frieling french press
Answer: I suggest you measure your current filter. If it is approximate 4 - 4 1/4 inches in circumference, then yes it will fit.
Question: How often should I change filter
Answer: I use my French press every day, and have never had need to change the filters. I kind of wondered why they sent the additional filters since I don't think I'll ever really need them. It's still the nicest French press I've ever owned, though. It's the perfect size for one good mug of coffee, and the triple filters ensure that no grounds get through.
Question: What is the diameter on these filters
Answer: diameter is approx. 3-1/4".
Question: Will these work for the sterlingpro french coffee press
Answer: Hello, these French press 34 oz filters will absolutely fit the SterlingPro french coffee press.

Product description

The All Seasons Indoor Composter kit is a unique, in-house system used to recycle kitchen scraps into an organic compost soil conditioner. The most effective method of fermenting is through anaerobic (without oxygen) fermentation. This process prepares the scraps for burial in less than half the time of conventional composting methods without any unpleasant odors. This system ferments and pickles your food waste in less than half the time of conventional composting methods without odors. The All Seasons Indoor Composter includes two unique features, the strainer and spigot, allowing the moisture released by the scraps of food waste to be drained out to prevent spoilage. This liquid can be used as a fertilizer for household plants (1:100 dilutions) or to clean your kitchen and bathroom drains (undiluted). The air-tight lid, which ensures anaerobic fermentation, must be pressed down firmly after each use. The lid is made of high quality plastic that is also flexible and may not lie flat. This warping will not affect the efficacy of the air tight lid. The All Seasons Indoor Composter kit can be easily implemented in an indoor environment making it useful for apartment, school, household, restaurant, business or wilderness use. Each composting kit comes with complete instructions and a bag of All Seasons Bokashi. The All Seasons Indoor Composter, used in conjunction with All Seasons Bokashi, provides the ideal conditions to activate anaerobic fermentation that accelerates the composting process, while eliminating odors and deterring pests.

  • EASILY LOWER YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT. Recycling would-be food waste into compost is a clear action you can take for a healthier planet. With both a 5-gallon compost container and Bokashi compost starter, our simple kit is ready-to-use and all you need to start composting in your kitchen or even on your countertop: no assembly required.
  • KICKSTART COMPOSTING. Unlike other kitchen countertop compost bins, the All Seasons Indoor Composter is more than a food scrap container: start the composting process immediately using the microbial power of All Seasons Bokashi to ferment your food waste after every meal, before transferring to your outdoor compost bin, garden soil, or curbside pick-up.
  • LOW ODOR INDOOR COMPOST BIN. This all-in-one Bokashi composting kit uses beneficial microbes to ferment your food waste without stinky putrefaction or flies. Our compost bucket’s kitchen-friendly design features a lid that locks tightly for easy, airtight fermentation. The compost bucket is made from high-quality, recycled plastic that won’t weaken during the decomposing process or leach harmful chemicals into your compost.
  • REDUCE YOUR TRIPS TO THE OUTDOOR COMPOSTER. Trudging out to your outdoor compost bin after every meal in the dead of winter isn’t fun—plus decomposition slows down naturally outside in freezing cold weather so there’s no guarantee you’ll have compost ready for spring planting. By fermenting your food scraps inside using our compost container, you stay warm, save time and energy, and speed up your composting process. It truly makes it easy to compost.
  • NURTURE YOUR PLANT BABIES WITH EASY-TO-ACCESS COMPOST TEA. Compost tea is a powerful plant fertilizer, but making it outdoors is a messy, time-intensive process. Our compost bin’s design features a built-in spigot that makes accessing nutrient-rich compost tea quick and easy. Simply drain, dilute, and use to nurture your house plants. Plus bokashi composting loses fewer nutrients than traditional composting methods, making both your compost and compost tea an even richer source of garden gold.

User questions & answers

Question: how much bokashi is included
Answer: It included two bags, and we use it very sparingly and I'm still in the first amazing. AMAZING flower growth when used with 1 TBS. Bokashi team to one gallon of water.
Question: Anyone have a recipe for the mix
Answer: Type "How to Make Bokashi" in a youtube search. "Podchef" Neil Foley has a good demonstration.
Question: can i put worms in it
Answer: I have worms in my compost barrel but I never put worms in my K100 bucket since the food only stays in there 30 days then I transfer to my compost barrel and it really gets hot in there and worms do not like it too hot- will kill them but hey, I never tried it.
Question: Is burying the compost in a yard to fully decompose really necessary? We do not have a yard. I was going to give it away or sprinkle it on some common green areas by our apartment
Answer: I have done 3 buckets of comt using SCD probiotics K100 and all I got was mold. I reverting back to using my compost barrel...no mold in there and breaks down better. I really do not think the probiotics breaks down the meat/cheese so I am no longer using them and trust me I set up my system by the book. waste of money

Perfect Indoor Composter for the Eco-Minded

COMPOST ANYTHING INDOORS. Unlike other kitchen countertop compost bins, the All Seasons Indoor Composter is more than a container to collect food scraps: you can compost directly in our kitchen compost bucket using the microbial power of All Seasons Bokashi to ferment your food waste after every meal. It’s easy to recycle any kind of food—even small bones, meat, dairy, and paper.

NURTURE YOUR PLANT BABIES WITH EASY-TO-ACCESS COMPOST TEA. Compost tea is a powerful plant fertilizer, but making it outdoors is a messy, time-intensive process. Our compost bucket’s design features a built-in spigot that makes accessing nutrient-rich compost tea quick and easy. Simply drain, dilute, and use to nurture your house plants.

QUALITY MATERIALS AND PARTS. Our compost buckets and components are made with the highest quality, BPA-free plastic. And the black compost bin is made from 75% recycled soda bottles. We provide replacement parts to keep your bucket working for as long as possible.

Step 1

To get started, you will need the All Seasons Indoor Composting Kit. Place it under your sink, or a convenient location in your kitchen.

Step 2

Before you add food scraps, chop everything into small pieces. This allows for greater surface area for the microbes to feast on. You can add (small) bones, cheese, coffee grounds and meat as well as all fruits and vegetables. Add food scraps to the bucket, in layer (up to 3").

Step 3

Dust each layer with a generous handful of Bokashi. When putting in meat, bones, cheese, coffee grounds or other hard to compost materials, use more All Seasons Bokashi than

normal.

Step 4

Close lid tighly. Repeat steps 2 - 3 each time food scraps are added and All Seasons Indoor Composter is full.

Step 5

Drain the compost 'tea' every 2-3 days or as needed.Dilute the 'tea' (one Tbsp / gallon of water). Use immediately on indoor plants or outside in the garden.

Your Compost Bin is Full, Now What?

Dig-in Method. Transfer the material directly into your garden for complete break-down. Dig a trench or hole approximately 6"-12” deep. Mix the food scraps with soil as you add it to the trench. Cover the compost completely with soil to assure further decomposition and to prevent unwanted critters. Wait two weeks before planting to avoid root burn.

Container Planter Method. Transfer material directly into a planter or container. Fill 1/3 of container with potting soil. Add compost and lightly mix with soil. Finally, fill the remaining 1/3 of the container with potting soil. (Optional: cover with a plastic bag to maintain anaerobic conditions.) Wait two weeks before planting.

Outdoor Compost Bin. Add the food scraps from your All Seasons Indoor Composter directly into the compost pile in your backyard or community garden. Turn as normal and apply a heavy dose of All Seasons Bokashi, if needed.

Compost Pickup Program. Check for local organizations who offer compost pickup.
