12 best fencing for goats
Fencing for goats is crucial for managing and containing these animals on farms and ranches. Proper goat fencing helps ensure their safety, keeps them from wandering, and protects your property. Here's what you need to know about fencing for goats:
Fencing Materials:
- Woven Wire Fencing: This type of fencing is a popular choice for goat enclosures. It consists of sturdy wire mesh woven to form small squares. Goat-specific woven wire fencing is available, with smaller openings at the bottom to prevent kids from escaping.
- Electric Fencing: Electric fencing can be an effective option, especially for temporary enclosures. It delivers a mild shock to deter goats from pushing against or attempting to breach the fence.
- High Tensile Wire Fencing: High tensile wire fences are durable and can withstand goat pressure. They are tensioned tightly to prevent sagging.
- Wooden Fencing: Wooden fences, such as split rail or board fences, can work well for goats, but they should be supplemented with wire or mesh to prevent goats from getting through or under them.
- Chain Link Fencing: Chain link fencing can be used for goat enclosures, but it's more expensive than some other options and may need additional measures to prevent goats from climbing or squeezing through.
Height and Spacing:
- Fences for goats should typically be at least 4 to 5 feet tall to prevent them from jumping or climbing over.
- The spacing between wires or slats should be narrow enough to prevent goats from sticking their heads through or escaping.
Post Placement:
- Secure fence posts firmly in the ground to withstand the pressure of goats pushing on the fence.
- Use treated wood or other materials that resist rot and decay for long-term durability.
Gates:
- Install sturdy gates that are easy to open and close. Ensure that they are goat-proof, as goats are notorious for testing boundaries and attempting to escape through gates.
Ground Clearance:
- Make sure the fence extends into the ground or has a secure footing to prevent goats from digging underneath.
Maintenance:
- Regularly inspect the fence for damage or wear and tear. Goats can be hard on fences, so prompt repairs are essential to maintain containment.
Electric Fencing Tips:
- Proper grounding is crucial for the effectiveness of electric fencing.
- Ensure that the electric charge is appropriate for deterring goats but not causing harm.
- Train goats to respect electric fences by using temporary flags or ribbons to make the fence more visible.
Considerations for Different Goat Types:
- Pygmy goats and smaller breeds may require smaller openings in the fencing to prevent escapes.
- Horned goats can get their horns stuck in fencing, so take precautions to prevent this.
Local Regulations:
- Check local regulations and zoning codes regarding fencing requirements for goats, as they may vary by location.
Proper goat fencing is essential for the safety and well-being of your goats and the protection of your property. Tailoring your fence to your specific goat breeds and property conditions is important for effective containment and management.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to buy anything else to install this |
Answer: | Yes this is the wire fence alone and no mounting hardware. What you need depends how and onto what you want to install it onto I put 4x4 x6 post in ground |
Question: | Im trying to buy this but i dont know how thick it is |
Answer: | I believe it’s 14 gauge. My friend who’s built cat enclosures for me of 1x1” welded wire on redwood frames at several locations remarked that this was even better at 16 gauge used before. I have photos that might help. |
Question: | I am looking for some inexpensive fencing to make a play yard for my tiny shihtzu. He's not a jumper or a digger. Would this work |
Answer: | We bought this specifically for our dogs and it works great for that. Put posts in the ground and used a come along to stretch it tight. Looks very nice and is more than enough for our sogs. |
Question: | Can this be used to build an electric fence |
Answer: | The answers you received were conflicting/confusing. I'm looking for a fence to be electrified using a solar powered controller... |

Poultry Netting Electric Fence (48" H x 164' L)
- 🐓 Keeps predators and unwanted animals out (Stray Dogs, Fox, Raccoons, Bears, Wolves, Rabbits , Skunks etc.) and keeps your Poultry safe and enclosed (Chickens, Peafowl, Ducks, Geese, etc. )
- 🐓 Energizer is not included - DOES NOT WORK WITHOUT AN ENERGIZER - We recommend 1/4 Joules of Energy Per Every 164' Roll - Use only low or wide impedance intermittent pulse energizers. Warning! Do NOT use continuous current energizers with electric netting.
- 🐓 Very easy to set up - Posts are pre-fastened to fence making setup less than 15 minutes - Stakes are placed every 12 Feet (Any less is unnecessary because this kit includes four guy-lines which prevent fence from sagging) Watch video to see the crisp lines of the fence
- 🐓 Double spiked posts provide extra support - Trimming grass and vegetation along the line of the fence is a must. When vegetation touches the horizontal wires of the fence, the current is lowered. If enough vegetation is touching the fence, it will render the fence useless. We recommend purchasing a fence tester and keeping your fence above 3000 Volts to prevent predators
User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have to make a square for this to work? Or would it work in a L shape |
Answer: | An L shape or any shape for that matter is just fine. You don't need to connect the 2 ends together in order for the fence to produce a strong charge. An L or a Square produce the same charge. The RentACoop Team |
Question: | What keeps predators from digging under |
Answer: | Nothing, they will likely get hit by the power 1st trying to go through the fence but if they are persistent enough (dogs most likely) they will dig under. I have not had an issue with a dog digging under but many have been zapped by the fence and ran away. |
Question: | Are you able to connect more than one roll together |
Answer: | Yes, you can connect many rolls together. The more rolls you connect the more powerful your box will need to be. The RentACoop Team |
Question: | Would this be effective in keeping squirrels out by surrounding my fruit trees |
Answer: | I would doubt it. In order to get the shock, an animal has to be in contact with the ground and fence at the same time. If the squirrels jump on the fence, they won’t get shocked. |

Question: | What is the energizer shock required |
Answer: | I run my fence with a .07 joule energizer, I think the running voltage of something like that is around 3,000-5,000 volts. |
Question: | Can this be connected to a motorcycle battery with a timer |
Answer: | Unless you have a voltage booster, no. This net runs off of a energizer which pumps out ~3,000-5,000 V. You can buy a cheap one like I've got for $30 |
Question: | What is the wire gage |
Answer: | actual wire that holds the current is very small, 22-24 ..it's wrapped around a nylon cord |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this ground out easily? I plan to use this across a pasture with the grass trimmed |
Answer: | I have had no issues with the fence and being charged or grounded out. Unfortunately my Nigerian goats have learned they can jump the fence much to the downfall of my fig tree |
Question: | Do you think this will work to keep dogs in? i have two 70lb +/- olde english bulldogges (athletic build). they can jump a regular 4ft fence |
Answer: | It may, as electric net is meant to be a psychological/pain barrier rather than a physical barrier. The key will be to make sure the fence is properly energized and then train the dogs to the fence by baiting it so they will touch it and receive a few experiences. This can be done placing some type of food on or next to the fence, such as peanut butter, honey, etc., so they will touch it and receive a shock. Once they have received a few shocks, they usually are much less likely to wish to challenge it. After erecting and charging the fence, you will need to test your fence with a fence tester to verify that it has adequate charge. You want it to test at a minimum of 3,000 volts at the point on the fence that is furthest from the fence energizer. We do also have 48" PoultryNet and Chicken Net, if you wish to try a taller net. |
Question: | does this come with the post needed |
Answer: | The posts are already inserted into the net, but we do recommend using additional non-conductive support posts, such as the 42" FiberTuff posts (item 208054), in the fence where additional support may be needed, such as the ends, corners or major directional changes. |
Question: | Will this work as a pig pen |
Answer: | It will work for pigs, but we recommend that you train them to the fence by initially setting up the fence inside of a permanent enclosure and allow them to receive a few experiences from the fence. Pigs occasionally will charge forward when receiving a shock, so it is best that they experience it inside a permanent enclosure first so they learn to respect the fence. While this fence is more versatile for more types of animal species, our Pig QuikFence (Item 208062) is designed specifically for pigs and would be a better choice if pigs are the only type of animal being contained. |
Product description
A highly conductive prefabricated 164 ft fence with 10 horizontal twines (9 conductive); is 42" tall installed and has large white plastic vertical struts every 12 inches. Plastic strut verticals promote less fence sagging versus string verticals and are less likely to tangle and bunch when installing and removing the fence. The black and white colors provide 24/7 visibility to both humans and animals against light and dark backgrounds. ElectroStop includes a tinned copper conductor, which makes the fence 10 times more conductive than fences with only stainless steel conductors. It has 38 ohms of resistance per 1,000 feet, as compared to 380 ohms of resistance on fences with only stainless steel conductors. This allows multiple rolls of netting to be connected together and electrified effectively. Important to perform routine vegetation maintenance to minimize grass/weed load on the fence and PVC posts(.60" diameter)are built into the mesh every 12.5' with 6" double spike at the bottom that insert into the ground. Used to keep sheep, goats, guard dogs in while keeping out stray dogs and coyotes. Also used to keep bear away from bee hives. Suitable for cattle. Not designed for use with poultry. Recommend using additional support posts at ends and corners, such as Premier's 42" FiberTuff posts (Item 208054) found on Amazon. Acceptable levels of electric conductivity on the fence can be difficult when low soil moisture conditions are present. If dry soil conditions occur frequently, a Pos/Neg (P/N) version of netting fence is strongly advised. FENCE MUST BE PROPERLY ENERGIZED TO BE EFFECTIVE. Energizer is not included. Recommend approximately .25 joule of energizer per roll of fence. Use only low or wide impedance intermittent pulse energizers. Warning! Do NOT use continuous current energizers with electric netting. For optimum results, we recommend using a Premier Solar or AC/DC energizer that fits your specific needs. Premier's energizers are found on Amazon.
- Netting is 164' per roll. Vertical plastic struts reduce fence sagging between fence posts. Multiple rolls of netting may be connected together.
- Works well in containing sheep, goats and guard dogs, while repelling coyotes, stray dogs and bears.
- Recommend using additional support posts at ends and corners, such as Premier's 42" FiberTuff posts (Item 208054) found on Amazon. We prefer using support posts versus guy-lines at the fence corners, as they do not require removal when mowing and trimming around the fence. Important to perform routine vegetation maintenance to minimize grass/weed load on the fence and reduce energy drain.
- Very easy to setup and move. Takes approximately 10 minutes to setup a roll of netting.
- FENCE MUST BE PROPERLY ENERGIZED TO BE EFFECTIVE.
User questions & answers
Question: | Will it contain horses |
Answer: | It will contain horses, but was designed for sheep & goats. However, our item 208022 - Horse QuikFence was designed specifically for horses. All electric nets and fences must be properly energized to be effective. |
Question: | If I already have electric fence, can I just connect this to that current without buying whole new energy source |
Answer: | You may be able to, but it will depend if your energizer is large enough to handle the additional fencing and also be sure that it is an intermittent pulse energizer and not a one with continuous current. |
Question: | Has anyone had their kid accidentally touch the fence when electrified? Is it just like a shock from a 9 volt battery |
Answer: | I jumper mine off a wire from my cattle pastier with a 100 mi fencer. It hurts but the sheep are smart. If you fall behind on moving it so they need to start looking for taller grass, they will test it or sometimes push each other into it and knock it down. I have 2 and hook them together. For the most part it has worked great for me as long as I have hay for them when I am running short on time. I recommend the thick corner post and use twine to tie them to a T-post on the out side to keep it tight, tie in 2 places on each corner post top and middle or if it is hot out the poles will bow. |
Question: | Is this negativity effected by rain |
Answer: | Rain should not affect the fence. |

Color
The black and white colors provide 24/7 visibility to both humans and animals against light and dark backgrounds. It's low electrical resistance (only 38 Ω/1000 ft) is an important benefit for longer fences and/or fences with high weed contact.
Common Uses
Used to keep sheep, goats, guard dogs in while keeping out stray dogs and coyotes. Also used to keep bear away from bee hives. Suitable for cattle.
With proper care, netting should last 5-7 years.
Benefits
Very easy to move. Secure for adults, lambs and kids. Extra height is better for large and/or flighty animals. Visible for animals against all back grounds. End posts act as built in gates. Multiple nets hook to each other quickly via a clip on each end. Double spike posts are more stable in soft soils. Plastic strut verticals are more rigid than string verticals. Nets with vertical struts bunch less than string verticals when the net is being rolled up or unrolled.
Precautions
Electric fence is a pain barrier, not a physical barrier. A common mistake is not electrifying it. Animals may escape or become entangled (and may die). On a % basis, entanglement is very rare, but it can and does occur. If animals are scared or starved it will not keep them in. The first time you put the animals in the net, you should be available to watch them for a while. That way if one were to get into the fence and get caught, you can turn the power off and get them loose.
Electrify Your Fence
Electrifying the fence with an energizer is essential. For the fence to be effective at keeping out predators, it must be electrified to deter them from the flock.
Energizers sold separately.
- ElectroNet is an electrifiable, prefabricated portable mesh that arrives at your door as a complete fence. Posts are preinstalled at set intervals. Strong plastic struts reduce sagging between posts. Multiple rolls may be connected together.
- Used to keep sheep, goats, guard dogs in while keeping out stray dogs and coyotes. Can also be used for cattle and domestic hogs. Not recommended for use with poultry or other small animals.
- Features 9 horizontal strands (8 electrified). Lowest horizontal strand is not electrified to prevent fence grounding. Must perform routine maintenance to minimize grass/weed load, as it will drain the energy from the fence if touching the live strands.
- PVC posts with 6" single metal spikes are built into the mesh every 12.5 ft. Recommend 35" FiberTuff support posts at ends and corners to reduce sag. We prefer using support posts versus guy-lines at the fence corners, as they do not require removal when mowing and trimming around the fence..
- MUST BE PROPERLY ENERGIZED TO BE EFFECTIVE! Energizer is not included. Recommend approximately .25 joule of energizer per roll of fence. Use only low or wide impedance intermittent pulse energizers. Warning! Do NOT use continuous output energizers with electric netting. For optimum results, we recommend using a Premier Solar or AC/DC energizer that fits your specific needs.
User questions & answers
Question: | Need a bear repellant around bird sanctuary. Would this work? Usual electric fence isn't stopping them |
Answer: | Yes, this net can be used to repel bears, but it is important to have it adequately energized. We recommend using a fence tester on the fence after it is energized to measure the voltage on the fence. We recommend that the fence be carrying a minimum of 3,000 volts at the end of the fence that is furthest from the energizer to be effective. |
Question: | does it work for chickens |
Answer: | The 35" ElectroNet net is not designed to be used with chickens, as the openings at the bottom of the net are large enough for them to get through. We recommend using our PoultryNet or Chicken Net that is listed on Amazon for chickens. Our item 207015 and 201825 are a couple of our top selling 48" poultry nets. They have smaller, 2" x 3", openings at the bottom of the net, so the chickens can not slip through them. Thank you. |
Question: | Does the electronetting fence come with a jumper lead to connect to existing electric fence |
Answer: | We have 3 of them connected. |
Question: | Does this "ground out" easily |
Answer: | I have never had a problem with it grounding out since the bottom line is not electrified |

Common Uses
- Contain sheep, goats and cattle and keep out predators such as coyotes, dogs and bears.
- Enclose rams and buck goats.
- Make small pastures for animals that need special attention (ewes/does/nannies with triplets; injured or stressed animals).
- Effective for beehive protection to keep out livestock and bears.
- Strip grazing pastures, orchards, vineyards and stockpiled forages.
- As an interim fence until a more permanent fence can be built.
- Installing water gaps that work.
- Making lanes for moving animals.
Benefits
Because it’s so easy to install and remove, many move ElectroNet weekly—fencing the flock or herd instead of an entire pasture. Even for new users, it takes less than 10 minutes to go from out-of-the-box netting to installed fence.
No extra gates needed. Just turn off the energizer and pull the first post to create an opening.
Quick Ground
Quick Ground is a special use netting developed by Premier. Metal filaments in the bottom horizontal strand serve as the ground rod to complete the electrical circuit. It’s designed for those that move netting very frequently. There is a risk with this design; if vegetation touches both the bottom strand and the first positive strand (only 3" away) an electrical short is likely. We recommend using a larger (in output) energizer.

User questions & answers
Question: | This is working great for deer but the squirrels are coming over the top. I can fix that but does anyone know if they fit between the squares |
Answer: | I have no experience of trying to keep squirrels out. I suspect young, smaller squirrels can go right through the squares – maybe the adults, too! They might be able to chew a hole or dig under, as well. Certainly the sellers nor the manufacturer make any claims about squirrels, just lots of success keeping deer out. |
Question: | If this is a 'second generation' of fencing, does that mean it is better than the Tenax Heavy Duty UV-Resistant Polypropylene Mesh Deer Fencing |
Answer: | From the specs they look the same. However the C Flex fence is the newer product and is the one that Tenax is supplying its distributors with now. If you want a fence that is more heavy duty I would suggest the C Flex P or the C Flex HD over the standard. |
Question: | I want to cover a 65'x35' pond to keep leaves out. will the c flex tenax deer fence work |
Answer: | Interesting idea. The mesh is 2" x 1.75", so it would do well with a larger leaf, but this stuff is strong and heavy enough to withstand a running deer strike. I would think it would overkill for leaves. I'm not even sure the net would float. It certainly would be strong enough to tension over a flat surface, like a pond. It doesn't stretch, but it would sag some. You'd have to join several lengths together to get the width you need. This would be a total bear to handle as a 65' x 35' sheet. You could roll it up, but it's too stiff to fold easily. There are bird nets for fruit crops that might be more suited to your use. |
Question: | Is this similar to the fencing used by pet playground |
Answer: | Tenax Deer Fence Select and Tenax Pet Fence Select is the same product. 7.5' is for deer protection and 4' & 5' are recommend for pet containment. |
Question: | Does it come with battery for night time use |
Answer: | Yes, there is a 12V 12Ah sealed lead acid battery in the energizer that will energize the fence at night or during an extended period of cloudy days. If the solar panel is unable to keep the battery recharged during extended cloudy periods, there is also a 110V battery recharger included to allow you to recharge the battery. |
Question: | What is the package dimensions and weight |
Answer: | This will ship in 2 packages. The energizer package weighs 19 lbs. and measures 18" x 9" x 11". The package containing the net fence and posts weighs 27 lbs. and measures 50" x 8" x 8". |
Question: | Could you add more of your fencing to this to make the area bigger or would the battery not be strong enough to handle it |
Answer: | Yes, the Solar IntelliShock 60 Fence Energizer that comes with the starter kit is large enough that it should allow you to add more rolls of netting to your fence line. We generally say that it is large enough to energize 3-5 rolls of electric netting depending on soil conditions and vegetation. |
Question: | will this work with hogs |
Answer: | Yes, the ElectroStop will work with hogs. We do recommend training the hogs to the fence by initially setting it up 1 -2 feet inside of a permanent fence that the pigs are unable to get through. This will allow them to receive a few experiences prior to setting the netting in your preferred location. Hogs will occasionally charge forward when they receive the initial shock and training them in this manner allows them to learn to respect the fence. If you are wishing to contain only hogs, you may also wish to consider Premier's item 208062 - Pig QuikFence . While the ElectroStop is more versatile and works with more animal types, the Pig QuikFence is designed specifically for domestic pigs. |
Question: | Will this work for deer |
Answer: | if they want something they can just jump it |
Question: | Can a 1.4 solar Low impedence charger be used for this or with the higher joules effect the longevity of the fence |
Answer: | While we wouldn't want to place a large energizer, such as a 12 joule unit, on a roll of net, 1.4 joules will be fine on a roll of ElectroStop. We recommend a minimum of .25 joules per roll of net, so this energizer would allow you to add additional rolls to your fence in the future, if you wished. |
Question: | I got this all set up and charged. The voltmeter was reading btw 4000 and 6000. My goats just pushed it right down and walked out. Advice |
Answer: | Good Afternoon, Depending on where you measured at, what energizer you are using, what your ground field is like and how well your goats are trained to the fencing will determine how well your entire fence system works. You might want to give us a call at 800-282-6631 to discuss your issue. Thanks |

What's a deformed Bottom Selvage? It's the piece of fence that comes off the machine that is untrimmed. Technically called the selvage edge it is the weak point of the un-stretched product that becomes brittle and falls off if left on the fence. It looks like two to three deformed stands and Tenax uses cutting blades to remove this deformed section of fence so you have a clean sleek look.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the panel require a day of sunlight in order to hold a charge |
Answer: | I never got mine to work, so I called the manufacturer and they told me that they knew there was a lot of problems with this model and the seller was less than helpful. I would buy another one. I tried charging for 3 days too. |
Question: | Can you use this charger on a tape fence |
Answer: | Yes, this energizer will work with tape fence. |
Question: | Will this fence work with poly rope?does this work with poly rope |
Answer: | Yes, that is what I'm using. The poly rope has wire woven in the rope itself along with the poly. |
Question: | Can I connect a wire from this to my actual fence to make the whole fence shockable if touched? I need my huskies not to ruin my fence & the wild out |
Answer: | I believe the answer to be NO - the reason being that your fence is most likely grounded in which case hooking the charger to the fence would cause the charger to short out. Should your fence be built with wooden posts, then using standoff insulators you can install wires at whatever height you need and then hook the charger to them. I hope this helps. |
