11 best electric fence charger for cattle
An electric fence charger for cattle, also known as an electric fence energizer or fencer, is a device used in agricultural fencing to deliver electric pulses to the wires or tapes of an electric fence. These chargers play a crucial role in containing and protecting livestock, such as cattle, by providing an electric shock upon contact, which acts as a deterrent to keep the animals from breaching the fence.
Here are some key points about electric fence chargers for cattle:
Types of Electric Fence Chargers:
Plug-in Chargers: These chargers are connected to a power source, typically 110V or 220V AC. They are suitable for permanent installations and provide a continuous supply of electricity.
Battery-Powered Chargers: Battery-powered chargers are portable and are ideal for temporary or remote fencing. They are often used in areas without access to electricity.
Solar-Powered Chargers: Solar chargers harness energy from the sun to charge a battery, making them eco-friendly and suitable for remote locations without power sources.
Voltage and Joule Ratings: Electric fence chargers are rated in volts and joules. Voltage measures the electric potential, while joules represent the energy delivered in each pulse. The higher the voltage and joule rating, the more powerful the shock delivered to deter cattle.
Fence Type: The choice of charger may depend on the type of fence being used. Electric fences for cattle can be made of wire, tape, or a combination of both. The charger should be compatible with the fence material.
Installation and Grounding: Proper installation and grounding are essential for the effective functioning of an electric fence charger. The charger needs to be grounded correctly to ensure a continuous flow of electricity through the fence.
Safety Features: Modern electric fence chargers often come with safety features, such as lightning protection and surge suppression, to protect the charger from damage during storms or electrical surges.
Zoning and Regulations: Before installing an electric fence for cattle, it's essential to check local zoning laws and regulations regarding the use of electric fences for agricultural purposes. Compliance with these regulations is crucial to avoid potential legal issues.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the charger and the fence itself is necessary to ensure its continued effectiveness. This includes checking for damaged wires or insulators and ensuring that the charger is functioning correctly.
In summary, electric fence chargers for cattle are essential tools for managing and protecting livestock on farms and ranches. They come in various types, with different power sources and features, allowing farmers to choose the most suitable option based on their specific needs and conditions.Proper installation, grounding, and maintenance are key to the successful operation of electric cattle fencing systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need any additional hardware to attach it to a wood fence post |
Answer: | You need 2 large headed wood screws, that most Hardware Stores have. The screw holes are about 2 1/2" apart so it needs to be mounted on a 6" post. It would be best to fasten a piece of 2x4 like a cross on the post, then mount the charger on it. |
Question: | that weight is approximately team |
Answer: | If your asking "the weight of the charger", it's around twenty five pounds. The reason the charger can only be shipped by ground is because it has a battery. Batteries cannot be shipped airfreight. |
Question: | Does this come with a battery? If not, what kind do I get |
Answer: | It does come with a battery. You should plan to have it in the sun for a couple days without turning it on to get battery to full charge. |
Question: | What is the joule output |
Answer: | According to my meter it's about .75 joules, not quite 1 joule, my ground isn't what it should be. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would you please be willing to clarify the warranty? The manufacturer states 2 years. Your description says 1. Thank you |
Answer: | The one I purchased in 2013 had a 1 year warranty. It had to be returned for service twice during the warranty period.. The second time they sent me a new one. So far that one has worked fine. It was painful to be without the fence charger for weeks during each failure though. Hopefully it was just a bad initial unit because it is a great charger and mine was still producing a significant charge even after deer had broken several of the wires. |
Question: | Will this charger work for horses and can i use a poly wire with it |
Answer: | Mine works for bears so I would assume horses would be impressed by this charger. I have had no experience with poly wire but I would think that their website can answer. |
Question: | How many jolts does it put out |
Answer: | I use the fencer to keep critters out of the garden. I run one wire about 3 feet above the ground that is about 500 feet long, The meter reads 15.6 kilovolts. The other wire is 6 inches above the ground with all vegetation below that wire removed. This wire is for raccoon and woodchuck control. When I connect the two wires together, the meter shows 14.5 kilovolts but I know the voltage on the lower wire is much less as indicated by the spark length when shorting the lower wire to ground. This is likely due to capacitance between the lower wire and ground bleeding off the high frequency component of the pulses. The longer the wire and/or lower the wire the greater the drop in voltage along the wire regardless of the fencer make and model. Regardless, garden raids have gone from about one per night to zero. I've got about 60 years experience with electric fencers and this is the best I've ever seen. |
Question: | will this work for a very short fence? I am not using it for the farm. I am using it for the house so no animal will get near the house |
Answer: | I agree with all previous answers. It should work just fine, although it may well be overkill, and it will definitely give you a jolt if you touch it. Be aware of laws in your area pertaining to the use of such fencing. Also, you will want to make sure you have it grounded properly. I have four ground rods attached to mine. Our fence keeps the moose and bears away. Using an electric fence tester, I will pick up the electrical field before I even touch the fence so do not set a metal tool or pail near it. I had my horses' 70 gallon Rubbermade water tank too close to the fence. The horses had stopped drinking. I touched the water and got zapped. The Energizer 5 is a very powerful fencer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the charger come with the battery |
Answer: | Yes the battery is part of the self contained unit. All you have to do is let it sit in the sun for a day or two till the full charge blinking light comes on. While it's charging you can pound your grounding rod into the ground, string your wire & mount the unit. When fully charged just hook up the ground wire & the two ends of the fence wire & your good to go. More detailed instructions come with it. I used this last summer around my garden & it worked great for the deer, ground hogs & rabbits that were ravaging it before I put it up. |
Question: | Will this work with polytape? How much will the use of polytape reduce the distance it will cover |
Answer: | Hi Mark, I only used the rope with this unit and never used the tape. Depending on what you are using it to keep out / in, I am sure the tape works well but I don't know what distance will be lost if any. |
Question: | New to raising poultry. Does this work with netting like http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YTJIVM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKI |
Answer: | I use it on a 42 inch by 100 ft netting and it has worked well. |
Question: | Will this also work to keep deer out of my garden |
Answer: | Yes, it worked for me. We have several game cameras on our property and saw tons of deer, but never had a problem in the garden. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you attach a solar battery maintainer to the 12v battery while this unit is in operation |
Answer: | Never tried it. But do know that the fencer needs to be grounded to work. I use 3 ground rods 10’ apart to achieve maximum shock. |
Question: | Why is this labeled a 15mile charger it the seller says 1 joule per mile so don't use this charger for over a mile of fence? That's pretty deceiving |
Answer: | I am not a manufacturer rep of any sort, but can answer this. The input voltage of the fence charger is critical, it can handle the normal voltage of a fully charged battery,@ 13.5 vdc. Much above this can damage the unit. Many battery chargers both solar powered and standard, have outputs 14.5 to 16 vdc or higher for some of the smart chargers. This will be too high for the fencer and damage it if it is hooked up while the battery is being charged. To make things a bit less tedious, I use deep cycle marine batteries. A fully charged battery like this lasts at least a month with heavy weeds or cold weather in the mix. |
Question: | Can be used to protect the car with shock at touch |
Answer: | The charger will put out roughly 10,900 volts but my experience is you will end up with about 8000 volts on the fence your talking about. |
Question: | Questrion for the manufacturer: Why do you recommend against using an external solar cell for recharging the battery |
Answer: | The depth of the unit is 4.80 inches, the width is 9.40 inches and the height is 11.80 inches. |

Featuring a durable case, this low impedance energizer delivers 0.10 output joules and is best for short-haired animals, including horses, cattle and pigs. This charger features a built-in solar panel that collects the sun’s energy and stores it, allowing you to run a fence for up to 2 weeks without a charge. Mounting on a T-post allows you to rotate the charger so it follows the sun.
Seamless Mounting
The ESP5M-Z has a slotted mounting bracket on the back of the energizer. Install the charger on t-posts, y-posts and round posts and then rotate it on the pole to follow the sun as needed. To mount on flat surfaces and walls, just install a hanging screw.
Easy-Grip Terminals
For easy installation, the ESP5M-Z features easy-grip screw-on terminal knobs that help you connect your ground-rods and your live fence wire. Connect the fence line to the red terminal and the ground line to the green knob.
Track Your Fence Status
Monitor your fence status by checking the simple 'Fence OK' light. If the light is active, then your fence is up and running. This allows you to do quick spot checks on your fence and indicates when solar power is flowing from its internal storage battery.

Answer: | Hi, Isaac. This is a low-impedance energizer. |
Question: | What gauge wire is required |

Answer: | Use or generate? |
Question: | How many miles will this fencer energize |
Answer: | This item has adaptors for either using a 110volt or 12volt battery power source but it does not come with a tester. Those are sold separately. |
Product description
The Zareba 200 Mile AC Powered Electric Fence Charger is built in the USA and can power the large fences on your ranch or farm. This energizer delivers 15 output joules along an electric fence line, enough to handle most livestock and wildlife. For best results, use steel wire and remove vegetation from around your fence lines. Your fence can still operate with weeds or when using poly fencing, but the mile rating is reduced in these conditions. To get your charger ready for operation, mount it in an area protected from severe weather. First, attach the hookup cables to the fence and grounding system, and then plug it in to power your electric fence. Once activated and checked, use it to contain livestock including cattle, horses, exotics, pigs, sheep and goats. A properly designed fence can also keep out wildlife and predators. This Zareba energizer has a simple system-indicator light, which flashes when active. Easy-to-use wingnuts help to secure your hookup wires and the heavy-duty case includes 4 mounting slots. This charger purchase also includes a Zareba Storm Guard unit, which offers lightning protection. Zareba also offers a 3-year limited warranty, so review your instruction booklet to get registration instructions.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this charger be a good purchase to be used with primere electric fence? Just planning on goats chickens and maybe pigs down the road |
Answer: | I'm the same weight and wear and XL shirt and the XXL in these fit me great. Provides moderate compression without being uncomfortable. |
Question: | What is the Storm guard |
Answer: | Padlock and 2 keys are included. Works on both of my setups...20#ers and 30#ers. It will keep the normal person honest. Easy cut for bolt cutters tho. |
Question: | I am interested in deer control . how many wire and what heights do i need? do i need 2 separate fences 3 feet apart, and 3 linelevels as i hav |
Answer: | Yes. What you see in this pic is exactly the same on the other side. |
Question: | Is the power supply electric from the grid. Does it have the ooption to connect to batteries or solar pannels? if so please provide technical details |
Answer: | Depends on your hold-down device. But if it has the bar and the big wing nut I don't see why it wouldn't work. It prevents that wingnut from turning, hence being able to remove the cylinders. |
