In order to record, and synchronize, audio to your handwritten notes it is necessary to have the mobile device in-range, turned on and with the Livescribe+ application in the foreground. There is no microphone built into the Livescribe 3; the application employs the microphone in your device. ** Note: The Livescribe Echo DOES INCLUDE a built-in microphone. For this reason it can operate autonomously (all you need is the smartpen and dot-paper, not other device). Answer:	Good morning. Thanks for your inquiry. The very short answer is that the new "Black" edition is a straightforward replacement for the "Standard" edition. The Standard edition has been discontinued (and we are, ourselves, out of stock with no intentions to acquire more... and Livescribe themselves no longer make them). The interaction of the Black with the mobile Livescribe+ app is identical, no change there. Livescribe emphasizes that the new model has an improved look-and-feel, better balance and a better writing experience. Answer:	No. Voice to (accurate) text still requires manual transcription. Google "transcribe web app" for link to excellent app for doing transcription. Pen is good for hard of hearing because it allows you to make notes and go back and listen to exact recording. Fidelity is surprisingly good

Answer:	I work on a Mac, so I'm not sure what OneNote 2013 is. Yes, you can tap anywhere on the notes and it will play back exactly that part. I love this pen--it's my second one. (The display got very dim on the first one after five years.) Between the pen and screen shots, I never miss a thing on on-line classes and webinars. Once the notes are downloaded to your computer, you just click on them your mouse and the recorder will play on your computer.

Livescribe Dot Paper

Livescribe dot paper uses regular paper printed with a unique pattern of tiny microdots. This tiny pattern works a lot like a GPS system for your smartpen. It allows a smartpen to capture everything it writes or draws on dot paper.

Livescribe smartpens only work with Livescribe Dot Paper, so there's a variety of dot paper sizes and types available: College-ruled Notebooks, Lined Journals, Blank Journals, Mini Journals, A5-sized Notebooks, Grid Notebooks, Flip Notepads, and Sticky Notes. You can even print your own dot paper for free from within Livescribe Desktop on many printers.

Question:	I have a child w/a learning disability. , is this something that can really help him? He has very bad spelling as well
Answer:	There is a dictionary app you can add to the pen that may help. I believe it's most useful in recording a lecture or class and allowing the student to take more limited notes. This allows the child to focus on what is being taught instead of using their brain to worry about processing spelling or words. When they review and study, they can add any notes to the sections if needed. I feel this is best for 6th grade and above.
Question:	My pen display has gone dark. Evidently I'm not alone with this problem. Does anyone else have the same problem

Question:	Do you have to use the special notebook in order to record
Answer:	To record writing and audio in sync yes, but you may record the audio only with just the pen (long press on the power button starts audio recording)
Question:	Has anyone had issues with getting these approved in a school setting? My Dyslexic son would benefit from it but Cannot get approved for use
Answer:	Whereas the ADA does "provide" for reasonable accomodations, it doesn't impose upon schools, employers, public places just how those the "functional limitations" are accomodated for. Your best advocate is the diagnosing doctor, most likely a mental health practitioner with experience with determining "recommended" accomodations based on their assessment and evaluation. But still, the school can opt to meet the needs of those with disabilities via other accomodations. My university doesn't provide for much personal assistive technology as the have a strong assistive tech lab. Remember, "reasonable" refers to the accomodations not placing "undue hardship" on the accommodating organization. That includes excessive financial hardship as well. If the school can't budget for Smartpen for everyone who would benefit for them then they can be facing "undue hardship". The schools in my area, K-12, community colleges, universities can't afford to purchase Smartpen for all. So they use note takers, personal scribes, etc. I know, possibly more expensive than a $200 pen but it can be "reasonable" as the cost of accomodations can be allocated to several students' needs. Self-advocacy is your strongest Allie. But sometimes your self-advocacy is to provide for yourself. You may have to pony up the cost of the pen yourself, backed by a doctor's written recommendaction. OR look to your healthcare provider, local support groups or charities supporting the population of those with dyslexia for assistance. The government isn't the only source for services. Answer:	Sounds like a set up issue with the software. Check your setting in the set up page and if not there you could check product support at Livescribe.com
Question:	could you tell me what happen when the ink runs out
Answer:	You replace the ink. The livescribe comes with extra ink cartridges, so you can replace the ink when that happens. The starter note book is a 5 subject notebook so is rather large. You can even print your own pages IF you have a laser printer. you can also find extra cartridges I believe at livescribe.com. There is also a small 3x5 notebook which can also come in handy for quick notes or lists. it's a pocket version of the larger notebook. Save the page that has the commands on it, that comes in handy also. The microphone is a good idea too, it helps reduce the scratching noise from writing on the page.
