User questions & answers
Question: | How smooth is this one for writing? Is it rigid when you do write notes ? I like very smooth pens and use Japanese pens for smoothness |
Answer: | I've been using this pen for a couple of months and have taken plenty of notes. It is very smooth. |
Question: | Does the pen itself have a microphone on it, like the echo pen does? or does it only use your phone or tablet to record |
Answer: | TraductorHola solo usa el microfono del Smartphone o la Tablet. La Lapicera no tiene Microfono como el Modelo ECO Pen. Saludos. Hi just use the microphone Smartphone or Tablet. The pen does not have MICROPHONE as the Model ECO Pen. Greetings. |
Question: | Can you upload the information later to you device or does your device have to be on and near the pen when writing |
Answer: | The reply from "rawbert" is correct. When not connected via Bluetooth to a mobile device, the Livescribe 3 will record handwritting (no audio). In order to record, and synchronize, audio to your handwritten notes it is necessary to have the mobile device in-range, turned on and with the Livescribe+ application in the foreground. There is no microphone built into the Livescribe 3; the application employs the microphone in your device. ** Note: The Livescribe Echo DOES INCLUDE a built-in microphone. For this reason it can operate autonomously (all you need is the smartpen and dot-paper, not other device). The Echo, however, syncs into data via a USB cable to a PC (Windows or Mac, English or French). If you have any other questions, you may contact us anytime. Question: | What's the difference between the standard edition and the black edition of the Livescribe |
Answer: | Good morning. Thanks for your inquiry. The very short answer is that the new "Black" edition is a straightforward replacement for the "Standard" edition. The Standard edition has been discontinued (and we are, ourselves, out of stock with no intentions to acquire more... and Livescribe themselves no longer make them). The interaction of the Black with the mobile Livescribe+ app is identical, no change there. Livescribe emphasizes that the new model has an improved look-and-feel, better balance and a better writing experience. The battery capacity is a little larger but overall there is no important technical difference, so just consider it the "2016 model of the Standard". Hope this helps. User questions & answers
Question: | Can i translate some word |
Answer: | The USB charging doc is enough, you don't need to purchase another one. |
Question: | if you record something would it write it down |
Answer: | There are start and stop recording buttons on the bottom of each page. I rarely record audio - you can turn on or off as needed. |
Question: | Can the pen run out of ink |
Answer: | It comes with the notebook to write on and use. |
Question: | This pen comes with a usb charging doc. Will that substitute for the charging doc or do i have to purchase the doc as well |
Answer: | Hi there! We've stopped hardware and firmware support for the Livescribe Pulse smartpen since 2016. Echo Desktop might recognize the smartpen but we cannot guarantee that it works on the Windows 10 platform. |
Question: | can the audio recording function be turned off |
Answer: | Theoretically you could, but you would probably need cut out the entire page, to make sure the door pattern is complete. I would recommend looking at the other available notebooks, or printing out a page from the PDFs they provide. |
Question: | Does it come with the paper |
Answer: | The Livescribe Aegir smartpen uses a standard D1 style ink cartridge from Zebra. Ink cartridges that meet the same size specifications (67 mm x 2.35 mm diameter) and contain carbon-free ink may also be used, though Livescribe does not guarantee the performance of other brand replacement ink cartridges. |
Question: | Is there any difference in the livescribe 1 gb and 2 gb other than the amount of storage? also, does the livescribe 1 and 2 gb work with windows |
Answer: | The pen needs the Livescribe app. There is an Android version of the app available on the Google Play Store. If it isn't in the Amazon app store, then you will have to "sideload" it on your device, which is a little more difficult. The pen will not provide all the features without the app, so this is important. |

Question: | Will this work with the Echo pen |
Answer: | The rechargeable battery capacity is 10000mAh. |
Question: | Will this fit the Echo pen |

User questions & answers
Question: | can you convert voice to text |

Question: | Does this pen work with OneNote 2013? Can you tap any part of the notes that you wrote and recorded, and it will play back the specific recorded part |
Answer: | I work on a Mac, so I'm not sure what OneNote 2013 is. Yes, you can tap anywhere on the notes and it will play back exactly that part. I love this pen--it's my second one. (The display got very dim on the first one after five years.) Between the pen and screen shots, I never miss a thing on on-line classes and webinars. Once the notes are downloaded to your computer, you just click on them your mouse and the recorder will play on your computer. |

Question: | what age group is this pen suitable for |
Answer: | Adult Age Group-10-99 |
Question: | Is the microphone built in the Livescribe 3 pen too or just in the Echo |
Answer: | Yes it is built in |
Question: | I have a child w/a learning disability. , is this something that can really help him? He has very bad spelling as well |
Answer: | There is a dictionary app you can add to the pen that may help. I believe it's most useful in recording a lecture or class and allowing the student to take more limited notes. This allows the child to focus on what is being taught instead of using their brain to worry about processing spelling or words. When they review and study, they can add any notes to the sections if needed. I feel this is best for 6th grade and above. |
Question: | My pen display has gone dark. Evidently I'm not alone with this problem. Does anyone else have the same problem |
Answer: | My pen dislay has gone dark too. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have to use the special notebook in order to record |
Answer: | To record writing and audio in sync yes, but you may record the audio only with just the pen (long press on the power button starts audio recording) |
Question: | Has anyone had issues with getting these approved in a school setting? My Dyslexic son would benefit from it but Cannot get approved for use |
Answer: | Whereas the ADA does "provide" for reasonable accomodations, it doesn't impose upon schools, employers, public places just how those the "functional limitations" are accomodated for. Your best advocate is the diagnosing doctor, most likely a mental health practitioner with experience with determining "recommended" accomodations based on their assessment and evaluation. But still, the school can opt to meet the needs of those with disabilities via other accomodations. My university doesn't provide for much personal assistive technology as the have a strong assistive tech lab. Remember, "reasonable" refers to the accomodations not placing "undue hardship" on the accommodating organization. That includes excessive financial hardship as well. If the school can't budget for Smartpen for everyone who would benefit for them then they can be facing "undue hardship". The schools in my area, K-12, community colleges, universities can't afford to purchase Smartpen for all. So they use note takers, personal scribes, etc. I know, possibly more expensive than a $200 pen but it can be "reasonable" as the cost of accomodations can be allocated to several students' needs. Self-advocacy is your strongest Allie. But sometimes your self-advocacy is to provide for yourself. You may have to pony up the cost of the pen yourself, backed by a doctor's written recommendaction. OR look to your healthcare provider, local support groups or charities supporting the population of those with dyslexia for assistance. The government isn't the only source for services. Look at your state health and disability departments. Every state has them. Best of luck. Source: personal experience, academic training in vocational rehabilitation. |
Question: | My pen keeps writing in Spanish how do I change it to English |
Answer: | Sounds like a set up issue with the software. Check your setting in the set up page and if not there you could check product support at Livescribe.com |
Question: | could you tell me what happen when the ink runs out |
Answer: | You replace the ink. The livescribe comes with extra ink cartridges, so you can replace the ink when that happens. The starter note book is a 5 subject notebook so is rather large. You can even print your own pages IF you have a laser printer. you can also find extra cartridges I believe at livescribe.com. There is also a small 3x5 notebook which can also come in handy for quick notes or lists. it's a pocket version of the larger notebook. Save the page that has the commands on it, that comes in handy also. The microphone is a good idea too, it helps reduce the scratching noise from writing on the page. |
